Advanced talks: Liverpool working on deal to get "quality" player for free

Liverpool are believed to be in advanced talks over completing a free transfer for a “quality” player this summer.

Liverpool’s January transfer window

The Reds were quiet in the winter market in regards to signings, with no new players brought in by FSG to bolster Jurgen Klopp’s squad and a number of players leaving on loan, including Fabio Carvalho, Nat Phillips and Calvin Ramsay. In fact, the biggest news of the month involved Klopp, who revealed he will leave Anfield at the end of the season.

Sporting director Jorg Schmadtke has also left Merseyside after helping Klopp rebuild his midfield with the summer signings of Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo. Speaking about the news, Schmadtke said: “Liverpool is a very special club so to have had the opportunity to work here has been a huge honour for me, even though I knew from the outset that it would only be for a short period.

“I would like to thank everyone – the owners, manager, staff, players and fans – for the support I have been given and offer my best wishes for the rest of this season.”

FSG therefore have no sporting director or manager in place for the start of the 2024/25 season, but it looks as if they are still looking to seal their first summer signing.

Lloyd Kelly in advanced talks with Liverpool

Journalist Seb Ecrivain Foot took to X in the last 48 hours to share an update on the future of Kelly. He said that the defender won’t be penning a new deal on the south coast and is in fact in “advanced” talks with both Liverpool and Premier League rivals Tottenham.

“Lloyd Kelly (25 years old) will refuse to extend his contract with Bournemouth… Free this summer, the defender is in advanced discussions with Liverpool and Tottenham. To be continued.”

Kelly, a left-footed centre-back who can also turn out at left-back, has been with the Cherries since 2019 after leaving Bristol City. During that time, the 25-year-old has made 130 appearances for the club, helping them earn promotion back to the top flight.

He’s made 14 appearances this season under Andoni Iraola but it looks like his days are now numbered at the Vitality Stadium. Kelly has come in for praise during his time on the south coast, including from former Bournemouth boss Scott Parker, who hailed the player’s "quality" ability in 2022.

"I think Lloyd Kelly has got the attributes and the ability to be a top Premier League centre-half. And I think we are blessed and very, very lucky to have someone of his quality, really.

"You take players like Lloyd probably for granted in the sense of he makes things look very effortless and easy. And when you're watching him on the eye, you put someone else in that position of a ball down the side of a defender or one in the channel and getting in a foot race, he makes it look very easy, that you probably never appreciate it.

"The standards he sets are very high as a captain of this team and he's still so young in his age that he's got a lot on him.”

It looks as if a move to Anfield is one to watch, with the Reds and Spurs seemingly battling it out for the versatile defender’s services.

Fifties from Ramdin, Simmons hand Knight Riders a hat-trick of wins

Knight Riders finished their first week of the season with three wins in three matches

The Report Sreshth Shah08-Sep-2019Trinbago Knight Riders cruised to their third straight win in CPL 2019, as their experienced quartet of Lendl Simmons, Denesh Ramdin, Sunil Narine and captain Kieron Pollard set up a comfortable seven-wicket win over St Lucia Zouks on Sunday.Riding on the support of a packed home stadium, Knight Riders overcame an above-par first-innings total of 167 to finish the first week of the season at the top of the points table. In the first innings, Narine’s four-over spell of only 23 runs ensured Zouks didn’t post a higher total, after which Simmons and Ramdin struck smart half-centuries to always keep Knight Riders within touching distance of the required run-rate. And when Simmons fell for his 39-ball 63, Pollard brought up the rear with an unbeaten 26 to bring victory in the 18th over. For Daren Sammy’s Zouks, it’s now two losses in a row. With their next match four days away, Zouks could find themselves in bottom place before they take on Jamaica Tallawahs on September 13.Simmons’ super showChasing 168, Knight Riders had a blazing start on the back of a 29-run first-wicket stand between Narine and Simmons inside three overs. But once Narine fell, Sammy introduced three spinners in a bid to negate Simmons’ threat. There were murmurs that Simmons struggles against spin, but he used his feet well against offspinner Rahkeem Cornwall and legspinner Fawad Ahmed to keep moving at a brisk pace. Fawad, who was CPL 2018’s highest wicket-taker, was brave to flight the ball, but Simmons stayed committed to his shot making, and deposited two sixes over long-on off the bowler. For Fawad, it was a bitter reunion with his former team. He conceded more than 13 per over in his three-over spell.Simmons’ shots went in all directions. He swept them for six, found tiny gaps behind point off left-arm spinner Kavern Hodge for four and even drilled boundaries through cover. One particular slap through the off-side brought up his 44th T20 fifty in the ninth over. Simmons finally fell in the 12th over to Hodge, stepping out to a very wide delivery, stumped by the fast hands of Andre Fletcher. By then, though, the required run-rate was under 7.50.Ramdin, Pollard show their experienceThe No. 4 Ramdin enjoyed much of Simmons’ hitting from the other end. He had entered the Knight Riders chase in the fifth over with the team in a spot of bother at 34 for 2. But he kept the scoreboard moving, settling in and letting Simmons enjoy the strike.Ramdin’s first release shot came in the 11th over when he drove Fawad inside-out through the covers. He followed it up with a slog sweep next ball for six, and that set the momentum for his innings even after Simmons’ dismissal next over. The No. 5 Pollard took over Ramdin’s role once he came in, and the latter then turned aggressor. He carved Thisara Perera over point in the 15th over to bring the equation down to six per over, and then struck a hat-trick of fours off Kesrick Williams in the 17th to bring the target down to single digits. That broke Zouks’ back, and Knight Riders crossed the line five balls later.Zouks fail to maximise with the batPinch-hitting opener Cornwall had bruised Knight Riders early on with a 12-ball 33, which helped Zouks reach 51 after six overs. But they could’ve had more if his opening partner Andre Fletcher didn’t struggle as much. Against Narine, Fletcher failed to rotate the strike and got bogged down in the Powerplay. Fletcher’s laboured innings of 26 off 32 balls ended in the tenth over when holed out to long on.John Campbell – playing his first CPL game – and No. 4 Najibullah Zadran then looked to up the scoring-rate but it wasn’t easy against the offcutters that James Neesham and Pollard were bowling. And while Zadran did mesmerise with a six and two fours off Narine in the 15th over, he made just 26. Campbell went on at a run-a-ball, and when he eventually fell in the 20th over, his 42-ball stay had earned only 43 runs. That Zouks posted 167 at the end was due to some big hitting from Sammy off the young Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Hasnain at the back end of the first innings.

Poch’s £25m Spurs signing has cost Levy £1m per 90 mins

Tottenham Hotspur are in the thick of a battle for Champions League qualification in the Premier League, with Ange Postecoglou seeking a positive finish to his first campaign in London.

After finishing eighth last season and resultingly losing Harry Kane to Bayern Munich, Spurs were in desperate need of a reset and the Australian has offered just that, placing the pillars of a new era despite much ebbing and flowing.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou celebrates.

Several exciting signings have been made to shape the improving team, while one of Postecoglou's first ports of call was to ship out deadwood such as Tanguy Ndombele and Davinson Sanchez – also ridding his system of the out-of-favour Eric Dier last month – there are still players yet to be shipped on that very much look without a successful future down N17.

Spurs' signing of Ryan Sessegnon

One player who is surely nearing the end of their Lilywhites career is Ryan Sessegnon, who has made one paltry appearance this season, against Burnley in the FA Cup, as he battles against ongoing fitness issues.

Signed from Fulham in a £25m package back in 2019 as a 19-year-old after dazzling in the second tier, posting 25 goals and 18 assists across 120 displays, there was much buzz surrounding then Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino's new left-back, also capable as a winger.

Life on the major stage had such promise for this dynamic flanker and while Sessegnon is still only 23, he will need to get a grip on his fitness sooner rather than later to live up to the chatter when plying his trade for the Cottagers.

Ryan Sessegnon's cost at Spurs so far

Sessegnon has completed 57 appearances for Tottenham, scoring three goals and providing four assists for his teammates, but there is no questioning the fact that he has fallen by the wayside after prodigious beginnings and, out of contract next summer, might be approaching the end of his time at the club.

Ryan Sessegnon.

While his injury issues are unfortunate, his time on the pitch has not exactly been paved in praise, with Tottenham expert Jon Wenham claiming that he looks like a "Championship player".

When combining the player's transfer fee with his wages earned throughout his time at Tottenham, it can be deduced that he has cost the club more than £39m, and counting.

To put that in perspective, popular footballing information site Transfermarkt records Sessegnon's total minutes for the outfit at 3,391, meaning he has cost approximately £1m per 90 minutes. That… is grim reading.

As the table shows, Sessegnon is on par with first-team stars such as Micky van de Ven and Yves Bissouma, while sitting comfortably above a host of players who compete in Postecoglou's matchday plans with regularity.

The incessant injury troubles that have ravaged much of his career are unfortunate, but it's reaching the point where chairman Daniel Levy must consider whether keeping him on the books is a good idea, with the new chapter at the club requiring a certain ruthlessness to catch up with the Arsenal's, Manchester City's and Liverpool's of the Premier League.

Wage Burners

Football FanCast's Wage Burners series explores the salaries of the modern-day game.

Ultimately, Sessegnon is still only 23 years old and has a real shot at returning to prominence, but he would be better placed doing so away from Tottenham, where he can move to a side with a greater chance of earning a prominent, regularly starting spot.

FICA head Tony Irish criticises Bangladesh players association for inaction

The players themselves have gone on strike demanding better pay but the CWAB has done little to help them

Mohammad Isam22-Oct-2019FICA, the international cricketers’ association, has lent its support to the striking Bangladeshi cricketers while hitting out at the role of the Bangladesh players body FICA itself counts as a member for over a decade.Tony Irish, FICA’s executive chairman, criticised the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) – which, in theory represents Bangladesh cricketers – for some of its office-bearers also holding positions in the Bangladesh board, and called for a review of the affiliated body’s membership at FICA – membership granted in November 2007.”FICA commends the players in Bangladesh for their unity and for taking a stand together in order to secure fair conditions applicable to them as professional cricketers,” Irish said in a press release. “This has happened despite the challenging environment for players to collectivize in Bangladesh and it is a clear indication of the need for change in the way players are treated in what we regard as an important cricket country.”Irish said that the CWAB was not doing enough to properly represent the Bangladeshi cricketers, who, as they went on strike asked, for a change in leadership at the players body. It was the first of their 11 demands. The CWAB has been run by the same committee for more than ten years. Its president Naimur Rahman and vice-president Khaled Mahmud are BCB directors while general secretary Debabrata Paul works as the BCB’s match referee coordinator, for which he draws a monthly salary.”It is also clear to us that the players in Bangladesh don’t feel heard or respected in relation to important issues that affect them in their careers and that affect their livelihoods,” Irish said.”It is the role of a players’ association to be the voice, and collective representative, of the players, and it is a matter of concern to us that the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) does not appear to be fulfilling this role at a very critical time for the players. It is of further concern that it appears that office bearers of CWAB hold positions with the Bangladesh Cricket Board.”Irish has also offered help to the Bangladeshi cricketers. “Given the collective nature of the issues we believe that it’s important for FICA to offer its support and assistance to the players during this time.”But the CWAB hasn’t really committed to the cricketers’ cause during this strike. Naimur has said he won’t resign, and voiced his displeasure on a number of occasions in the last 24 hours, saying the players were being “selfish”, and should have taken their demands to the board instead.

Celtic are missing out on millions with star who had a "mind-boggling" value

The January transfer window for Celtic slammed shut at the start of last month and the Scottish giants were relatively busy in the market right up to the deadline.

Nicolas Kuhn arrived on a permanent deal from Austrian outfit Rapid Wien before Adam Idah was snapped up on loan from English side Norwich City, with no option to buy at the end of the season.

Brendan Rodgers also allowed David Turnbull to depart on a permanent basis as he completed a move to Cardiff City in the Championship. Meanwhile, Hyeok-kyu Kwon, Marco Tilio, and Mikey Johnson all had loan exits sanctioned by the Northern Irish tactician.

They were prepared to let all three of those players depart and, as you can see in the table above, Johnson, in particular, has thrived in England with West Bromwich Albion.

The window is not closed in all countries and another Celtic player is now reportedly set for a move away from Parkhead, for a fee that is millions lower than what he has been touted for in the past.

Latest Celtic transfer news

According to Football Insider, Hoops forward Liel Abada is poised to complete a transfer to the MLS to end his almost-three-year stint in Glasgow.

The report claims that the Israel international has reached a full agreement with Charlotte FC, who are managed by former Norwich and Aston Villa head coach Dean Smith, to join them 'imminently'.

It states that the Scottish giants have accepted an offer from the MLS side that is said to be worth in excess of £8m to become one of their designated players, and have since published an update that claims the deal could reach £10m with add-ons.

Celtic winger Liel Abada.

Football Insider claim that Abada was unsettled at Parkhead due to 'major personal issues' over the situation in his home country, and he is now set to move on from the club.

Last month, Rodgers revealed that Abada was not in the right state of mind to take to the field for the Hoops due to the problems off the pitch, which made it a difficult situation for the player.

He is now going to put that behind him by making the move to America to link-up with Charlotte, who have won one and drawn one in their opening two matches of the 2024 MLS campaign.

It is an unfortunate situation, given Abada's issues have not been primarily down to his performances on the pitch, and that is why it is hard to criticise Celtic for how it has played out.

However, with the benefit of hindsight, the Hoops may regret not having cashed in on him in a previous transfer window when his value was higher, as they have potentially missed out on millions as a result.

How much Celtic once valued Abada at

The winger was signed from Maccabi Petah Tikva for a reported fee of £3.5m during Ange Postecoglou's first summer transfer window in charge of the club.

By September of his second season, in 2022, Football Insider reported that the Hoops believed that Abada would be worth in excess of £15m in the next two transfer windows in 2023.

Former Scotland manager Alex McLeish reacted to that valuation and claimed that it was "mind-boggling" and very difficult for Celtic to turn down if any offers came in at that price.

Celtic winger Liel Abada.

Football Insider then claimed in April 2023 that Premier League sides Crystal Palace and Southampton – who were then relegated to the Championship – were interested in a swoop for the forward.

The Saints were also linked with Abada ahead of the January transfer window last year. However, they went on to splash a whopping £22m on forward Kamaldeen Sulemana from Ligue 1 side Rennes.

This suggests that the English outfit had the money available to spend £15m+, that Celtic believed he could be worth just a few months prior, on a new winger.

It remains unknown as to whether or not Southampton would have been prepared to spend that money on Abada, or if they were only willing to pay less than that, though.

The Bhoys may look back with a tinge of regret as they could have pushed to sell him that window amid the Premier League interest in his services.

There was not predicting the way things would turn out over the subsequent 12 months, however, and that is why they should not be heavily criticised for not opting to go down that route, even if it now appears that they missed out on millions as a result.

Liel Abada's Premiership statistics

The 22-year-old wizard hit the ground running during his first season at the club under Postecoglou with quality as a scorer and a creator from the wing.

Abada made 36 appearances in the Scottish Premiership during the 2021/22 campaign and started 24 times as Celtic won the league title under the Australian head coach.

The young gem caught the eye with his contributions at the top end of the pitch as he racked up ten goals, six assists, and 13 'big chances' created in those 36 outings in the top-flight.

Only Kyogo Furuhashi (12) and Giorgos Giakoumakis (13) scored more goals in the division for Celtic than the winger, whilst Jota (ten) was the only attacking midfielder to provide more assists for the club.

As you can see in the table above, the Hoops speedster struggled to maintain his place in the starting line-up but still made a big contribution in the final third with 15 goals and assists combined in 34 matches, despite starting just 13 times.

In total, Abada fired in 29 goals and assisted a further 22 in 112 appearances for the Scottish giants in less than three full seasons at Parkhead before his imminent move to Charlotte.

Overall, his time in Glasgow should be viewed as a success as the forward provided plenty of goals and assists throughout Postecoglou's two title-winning Premiership seasons at the club.

Richardson, Starc and Abbott blow Pakistan away on rapid Perth pitch

Pakistan never recovered from the loss of three wickets inside their Powerplay

The Report by Daniel Brettig08-Nov-2019At the home of the Perth Scorchers, Australia disposed of Pakistan with a brutal efficiency reminiscent of the West Australian Big Bash League club as coached by Justin Langer, completing a run of five wins in six T20Is that was only interrupted by inconvenient Sydney rain and posed ominous signs for the opposition ahead of next year’s World Cup.In front of a crowd of 22,626, a gleeful Aaron Finch sent the tourists in to bat on a lively Perth Stadium pitch, and Pakistan never recovered from the loss of three wickets inside their Powerplay. Mitchell Starc, Kane Richardson, the recalled Sean Abbott, Billy Stanlake and Ashton Agar covered for the rested Pat Cummins with ease, sharing wickets and responsibility for strangling the batting in an innings that featured no fewer than 26 plays and misses.Additionally, the Australians fielded and caught with rare polish, ensuring that very few Pakistani mistakes went unpunished. A final tally of 106 was about all that can be expected of Pakistan on days when Babar Azam does not bail them out with a score, as they have fallen into a deep T20I hole that had also seen them whitewashed at home by Sri Lanka prior to this one.Mohammad Rizwan had no answer for Mitchell Starc’s swing•Getty ImagesFinch and Warner had very little pressure on them as they charged to victory in a fashion that ensured the series would end with the openers being the only members of the Australian batting order to visit the crease more than once each. The vice-captain, Alex Carey, was not required to bat at any stage against Pakistan or Sri Lanka – he will hope for more of a hit when he dons the creams to lead Australia A against the Pakistanis from Monday at the same venue. The Australians included Abbott for his first international in five years, and also recalled Stanlake at the expense of Adam Zampa in expectation of a bouncy pitch. Pakistan selected two debutants, Khushdil Shah and Muhammad Musa coming into the team, alongside Mohammad Hasnain and Imam ul Haq.Imam’s inclusion at the top was another attempt to find some support for Babar, and for the first couple of overs the pair looked to be finding their feet. Starc, however, was able to generate some swing in his second over, enough to find Babar’s front pad and win a debatable lbw verdict from the umpire Paul Wilson, confirmed after a long delay waiting for ball-tracking in the wake of the Pakistan captain’s review.

Having claimed the most vital wicket of all, Starc improved on the delivery at his next attempt, splaying the stumps of Mohammad Rizwan who was nowhere near the late curl of the ball with his attempted drive. When Imam miscued Abbott, who hit the pitch hard in keeping with Australia’s plans to make the most of Perth’s vast square boundaries, the Pakistan innings was once again wobbling before it had the chance to stand.A brief recovery from Iftikhar, playing his second substantial innings in as many matches, was offset when a frustrated Haris Sohail failed to reach the pitch of Agar, who would complete a superb stint for the national team having conceded just three boundaries in six games, to lob a catch to long-off. Richardson then took his turn to strangle the remainder of the innings, as Starc and then Agar each claimed expert outfield catches.Finch was a happy man when he claimed the eighth and final wicket of an innings that petered out into the lowest of the series, and his juggle to take it was just about the Australians’ only near-misstep of an otherwise immaculate display in the field.David Warner gets Australia off to a flying start•Getty ImagesWith the bounce and occasional swing on offer, Finch and Warner were never going to advance on their meagre target entirely without risk, and in the first over Warner edged barely over the head of third man for six in a similar manner to the way Travis Head had twice been dismissed in last summer’s Test against India. Finch also cleared the rope with a hook shot that was more edge than middle, but the modesty of the chase and the confidence growing within the Australian side were soon apparent.Finch signalled as much with a brutal pull shot from Hasnain that cleared the backward square leg rope, some 84 metres away, despite the lurking presence of an outfielder for the shot. Australia’s Powerplay was worth 56 after Warner, riding in Finch’s early slipstream as is becoming increasingly customary, burst into life with a precise straight drive then a controlled hook off the bowling of Mohammad Amir. The winning runs arrived with all of 49 balls to spare, as Finch lifted a drive over wide mid-off and away to the boundary to complete eight wins from eight for the national team and an unbeaten calendar year in the format. Clinical and precise, calm and clear, Finch’s team now have a very sturdy template for winning next year’s T20 World Cup on home soil.

Coventry City hit the jackpot with their "outstanding" star

Coventry City couldn't have dreamed of a better away day at Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup, dramatically scoring twice in injury time to win 3-2 to seal a Wembley semi-final showdown with Manchester United.

Mark Robins' Sky Blues could find themselves playing against the Red Devils twice more next campaign if they can also break out of the Championship, with the West Midlands outfit just four points shy of the playoff spots.

Regardless of what happens, Coventry will keep their fingers crossed that they can keep a firm grip on this attacking midfield hero who didn't cost the club a single penny in transfer costs when he entered the building back in 2020.

Callum O'Hare's time at Coventry

Callum O'Hare would join the Sky Blues as a hot prospect eager to make a name for himself, unfortunately let go of by his boyhood club Aston Villa in the process.

Still, that wouldn't play on the 5 foot 9 creator's mind too much who has been a consistent hero for Coventry since making the move permanent four years ago after an initially fruitful loan.

Callum O'Hare

Joining on a free transfer when the Sky Blues had just made it up to the second tier, O'Hare's rise and continued excellence has coincided with his side knocking on the door of the Premier League after once being viewed as a sleeping giant.

O'Hare has amassed an impressive 51 goals and assists from 173 Coventry appearances to date, with 13 of those coming just this season for Robins' men.

Although the 25-year-old might have taken a relative back-seat compared to the likes of Haji Wright and Ellis Simms in Coventry's Cup upset at Molineux – with the number ten only given a 20-minute run-out – O'Hare was still key late on to that dramatic 3-2 victory being achieved.

He wouldn't pick up another goal or assist to add to his sparkling Sky Blues back catalogue, but O'Hare would give his side the necessary grit and fight required to shock the Premier League hosts – the ex-Aston Villa man would win five ground duels, alongside attempting four dribbles to unlock the scared Wolves defence.

He also teed up Simms to play Wright in for the winning strike against Gary O'Neil's flustered men, an adventurous foray forward justly rewarded.

Callum O'Hare's transfer value in 2024

Obviously, O'Hare's transfer value has now been bumped up from the £0 he was once purchased for with the 25-year-old now worth €1.0m (£855k) according to Football Transfers.

No doubt Coventry would want any potential suitor to cough up more than that, knowing how vital he is to the Championship side's cause currently.

However, they could be powerless to lose O'Hare on a cheap deal – the 25-year-old attacking midfielder's contract is up at the end of this season, alerting suitors to his services consequently.

Battling to be back in Robins' first-team plans this season after a devastating anterior cruciate ligament injury, O'Hare has more than proven his worth back in his team with "outstanding" performances as his manager has previously described.

1. Josh Eccles

€7.7m (£6.5m)

2. Haji Wright

€6.5m (£5.5m)

3. Milan Van Ewijk

€4.7m (£4m)

4. Liam Kitching

€3.7m (£3.1m)

5. Jake Bidwell

€3.4m (£2.9m)

The 25-year-old is still some way off being at the top of the list involving the most valuable players at the CBS Arena, but it would still be a monumental sucker punch for Robins and Co if they were to lose their much-loved servant.

Coventry will have their eyes on replacements already if that circumstance does arise, however, knowing that they have a reputation for being able to operate shrewdly and effectively.
