Mooney: Lack of game time against Pakistan could be a 'blessing in disguise'

Australia brace for spin challenge as they make adjustments to their plans following India vs Pakistan fixture

Annesha Ghosh07-Mar-2022Beth Mooney has admitted that Australia are wary of the challenge Pakistan’s spinners might pose for them on Tuesday on the used Bay Oval surface, where on Sunday, India collapsed after a strong start. To counter a potential spin-dominant ploy from Pakistan, Australia have had to tweak their plans “a little bit, slightly”, Mooney said.”We obviously had the opportunity to play over here last year in a similar time, and we had three one-dayers at the Bay Oval here [against New Zealand] and played on the same wicket all three times,” Mooney said on match eve in Mount Maunganui. “And when we got to the third game, it had slowed up quite a lot. So using that intel that we had from last year when we played will become really handy for us as a batting unit and a bowling unit.Related

India vs Pakistan: The record Rana-Vastrakar stand

“So we expect that Pakistan’s bowlers… their spinners especially bowl quite differently to ours in terms of pace through the air. So we had a session today, specifically on that as a top six, and hopefully we can use that to our advantage tomorrow.”Australia haven’t played Pakistan in ODIs since October 2018, and have only ever played 12 50-over games against them, winning each fixture. Mooney believes the lack of game time against Pakistan over the years could be a “blessing in disguise”, and said that watching the India vs Pakistan match, where spinners picked up five India wicket in the space of 12.1 overs, has helped Australia make adjustments to their plans.”We watched a little bit of the game yesterday just to see what they were doing in terms of the bowlers. Our bowling unit watched a little bit of their batting as well,” said Mooney. “So I think it’s almost a blessing in disguise at times when we come up against an unknown opponent of sorts and obviously we played them a few years ago now. So that’s very different about that group.”I thought they were outstanding with the ball yesterday and outstanding with the bat against India. So, yeah, it’s a different kind of challenge. But I think what we probably have focused on a little bit more in the last few months is worrying about what we can control and how we want to go about our game. So hopefully we can do that again tomorrow and adjust where we have to and adapt where we can.”

“Something that we pride ourselves on as a batting group is making sure we’re always moving the game forward and accessing different areas of the ground obviously to get the fields that we want. So just seeing a little bit of that in the game yesterday will be really important for us heading into tomorrow.”Beth Mooney

Save for opener Alyssa Healy’s early dismissal, Australia, frontrunners for the title, showed no weaknesses with the bat in their high-scoring opening game against defending champions England. Rachael Haynes and Meg Lanning’s record 196-run second-wicket stand meant Australia’s middle-order got time to bat only after the 42nd over. Even then, No. 4 Mooney, who made 27 not out, and No. 5 Ellyse Perry dug in as Australia powered to 310 for 3.Mooney felt that despite the Pakistani spinners’ impressive performance against India, Australia would be able to replicate their batting dominance at Bay Oval, where the match will be played on the same strip that was used for the West Indies vs New Zealand and the India vs Pakistan games.”Something that we pride ourselves on as a batting group is making sure we’re always moving the game forward and accessing different areas of the ground obviously to get the fields that we want,” Mooney said. “So just seeing a little bit of that in the game yesterday will be really important for us heading into tomorrow.”In terms of team news, Ashleigh Gardner is serving a ten-day isolation in Christchurch after testing positive for Covid-19, and Heather Graham, who has played a solitary ODI, has been drafted in as a temporary replacement for Gardner. A Covid-19 replacement at the 2022 ODI World Cup can be temporary, in that once the player has recovered, she would be eligible to return to the squad in position of the travelling reserve that replaced her.

Manchester United now want to sign £9k-p/w "technical maestro" for Amorim

Manchester United have now joined the race to sign a star in the making who has already caught the attentions of Chelsea this year, with Ruben Amorim personally having recommended the signing.

Manchester United change transfer policy

There has been significant change at Old Trafford since Sir Jim Ratcliffe took charge of the Premier League giants at the start of 2024. A whole new club hierarchy has been established, with Jason Wilcox and Dan Ashworth poached from Southampton and Newcastle United respectively to take charge of transfer policy, while Omar Berrada arrived from Manchester City to take up the CEO role.

The overhaul has also seen a change in the transfer policy itself, with the Red Devils now opting to sign younger players with higher potential rather than pre-established world-class stars, as they did under Erik ten Hag with the addition of Casemiro.

Though they signed five players for a combined £190m over the summer, only Noussair Mazraoui was over the age of 25, emphasising the shift in policy at the club.

Though the change is yet to bear fruit, there is a long-term belief that targeting younger players will be a more successful operating model for the club, summed up by Ratcliffe explaining in March that “I would rather sign the next Mbappé rather than spend a fortune buying success.”

Now, he could be set to throw his hat in the ring for a star at the other end of the pitch.

Amorim wants Manchester United to sign Portuguese talent

Reports from Spain claim that Ruben Amorim has personally recommended Manchester United join the race to sign Benfica talent Tomas Araujo.

The defender is well known to Premier League clubs; Crystal Palace saw a summer offer rejected for his services, while Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Chelsea are “in love” with the Portuguese defender, who they were willing to bid for in the summer only for Benfica to inform them that he wasn’t for sale.

“Chelsea were considering to bring in a new centre-back. For example, a player they are in love with is Tomas Araujo at Benfica.”

“They were considering a move for him, but then nothing happened because Benfica were not selling an important player a few days before the end of the transfer window.”

Now, the report claims that Manchester United have joined the race for his services, but he won’t come cheap, with the report adding that “any deal for Araújo is estimated to be in the region of €50m” (£41m).

This could yet be higher, with Araujo having a €100m (£83m) release clause in his £9k-a-week deal in Portugal, while Benfica are unlikely to sell midway through the season.

Tomas Araujo for Benfica.

With the futures of Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof all unclear beyond this summer, United will likely be back in the market for another defender soon, and could do far worse than Araujo.

He was dubbed “potentially one of the best CBs” by football scouting account DanielScouting on X, who added: “He’s a technical maestro. His turns, dribbling, manipulation, & passing make you think he’s a CM,” and claimed he was already an “elite player”.

Able to play across the defence, he could be an excellent signing and a future superstar, but is more likely to be one for the summer.

Rashid Khan says 'national duty the first priority' after Lahore Qalandars bid to fly him in for final

The Afghanistan legspinner is in the middle of a white-ball series in Bangladesh

Umar Farooq26-Feb-2022Rashid Khan will be unavailable for the PSL final, despite Lahore Qalandars offering to fly him into Pakistan for Sunday’s game, as he is in the middle of Afghanistan’s white-ball tour of Bangladesh. Qalandars are due to play defending champions Multan Sultans at Gaddafi Stadium and had taken the opportunity provided by the PCB’s tweaking of its Covid-19 rules to attempt the move.Rashid, however, tweeted that it wouldn’t be possible for him to play the PSL final “due to National Duty which is always a first priority.”

The prospects of Rashid returning to the PSL at such a late stage were always going to be bleak. His participation in the final would have involved the assent of the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) as well as the cooperation of Bangladesh authorities: Rashid has a single-entry visa to Bangladesh and would have needed a change to that if he was to fly out to Pakistan and back.Lahore’s idea was to fly him in on a charter plane to connect him from one bubble in Bangladesh to the one created for the PSL. But that would have also needed airspace approvals across Bangladesh, India and Pakistan; the complicated geopolitics of the region would have presented yet another obstacle. The fact that Lahore even thought about this idea is an illustration of Rashid’s value. He was an essential part of their early league-stage run, forming part of the most lethal attack in the league. When he signed off and left on February 20, he’d taken 13 wickets in nine matches at an average of 17.30, while maintaining an economy rate of 6.25.There was acknowledgement within the franchise that bringing Rashid back was a very long shot, but one that had been made possible by the PCB’s tweak of their Covid-19 protocols. This had allowed Alex Hales and Paul Stirling to return from various destinations and be able to take part in Islamabad United’s playoff games, despite only arriving in the country on the day of the game itself. Both had to clear Covid-19 tests on arrival but were kept apart from the rest of the playing squad, and were not allowed to share the dugout or dressing-room area and travelled to the ground in separate cars.Rashid has taken two wickets at 42.00 in the first two ODIs against Bangladesh in Chattogram, with Afghanistan losing both games. The last ODI, on February 28, remains important for Afghanistan as it carries the chance to get ten points in the ODI Super League points table. The ODI series will be followed by two T20Is on March 3 and 5, in Dhaka.

Magic from Salah & Sane: Ranking the 7 best Liverpool v Man City matches

There have been some outstanding clashes between Liverpool and Manchester City down the years in the Premier League and Champions League, but what are the best?

Arguably the greatest rivalry in English football over the past decade or so, the Reds and the Citizens have locked horns in several title races, as well as meeting in big European and FA Cup games.

In Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, Liverpool and City had two of the world’s best managers for years, and at their peak, the standard of football in clashes between the pair was unmatched.

The best grudge matches in English football

These teams don’t need to share a postcode to hate each other…

ByBarney Lane Nov 27, 2024

Here are our choices for the seven greatest Liverpool and City meetings – forgive us if you think recency bias has played a part, but there have been some classics in the last few years.

7 Liverpool 3-0 Man City, April 2018 Klopp's Reds stun Pep's City in Europe

When City and Liverpool were pitted against one another in the Champions League quarter-finals in 2017/18, it was a tie that made the rest of Europe sit up and take notice.

Guardiola’s side were cruising in the league, but the Reds had shown that they could hurt them earlier in the campaign, and they stunned their opponents here.

In one of the greatest first-half performances seen at Anfield, Mohamed Salah opened the scoring from close range, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain netted from distance and Sadio Mane headed home, all in front of a delirious Kop.

City looked for a vital away goal in the second half, but Liverpool produced a resolute defensive performance, securing a victory of major intent.

Liverpool's 9 best European nights – ranked

Liverpool have had plenty of wonderful European nights over the years.

ByRoss Kilvington Nov 27, 2024 6 Man City 1-2 Liverpool, April 2018 Liverpool progress in nervy Champions League thriller

In that first leg, Klopp’s men produced a stunning performance, but they knew they still had a lot of work to do in the return fixture.

When Gabriel Jesus fired City in front in the second minute, the Etihad erupted, and Liverpool found themselves on the back foot for the entire first half following a blistering display from the hosts.

The Reds managed to keep the score at 1-0, and as the hosts desperately searched for more goals in the second half, Salah sent the travelling fans wild with a dinked finish on the counter-attack.

Roberto Firmino then put the icing on the cake to seal a memorable 5-1 aggregate triumph.

5 Liverpool 3-2 Man City, April 2014 Coutinho scores memorable winner in pulsating title clash

The oldest game in this list has arguably become a forgotten classic due to there being so many special meetings in the years since.

City’s visit to Liverpool in April 2014 was one of the Reds’ biggest games in their Premier League history as they lay on the cusp of title glory. A victory would be huge – and Brendan Rodgers’ side duly delivered.

When Raheem Sterling (then still a Red) and Martin Skrtel scored first-half goals, Anfield was rocking and truly believing the title was finally heading their way again, but a David Silva strike and a Glen Johnson own goal stunned the home crowd.

There was still time for another twist, with Philippe Coutinho firing home his most important Liverpool goal, and while Jordan Henderson was sent off late on, Liverpool clung to their slender lead.

It was City who would have the last laugh, though, as they won their second Premier League title on the final day of the season.

4 Man City 2-2 Liverpool, April 2022 Nothing separates rivals in relentless Premier League clash

City hosted Liverpool in a massive Premier League encounter in April 2022, taking a one-point lead at the top of the table into the match.

Both knew the importance of victory at the Etihad and how damaging defeat would be, and in the end, both Guardiola and Klopp would have been content with a point apiece.

Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring with a deflected effort to seemingly set City on their way to victory, but Diogo Jota responded before half-time to restore parity. Gabriel Jesus fired the hosts back in front, undoing Liverpool’s hard work.

Mane, playing in his final season at Anfield, stole in behind Kyle Walker to make it 2-2 in clinical fashion, and while both sides huffed and puffed for a winner, the scoreline remained the same. City eventually sealed title glory on the final day following a dramatic comeback at home to Aston Villa.

The best points totals in Premier League history

No room for the Invincibles here…

ByJack Salveson Holmes Jun 2, 2024 3 Liverpool 2-2 Man City, October 2021 Salah genius lights up Anfield

While the aforementioned 2-2 draw in Manchester in 2021/22 was a great game, this one from six months earlier was even better. In truth, the first half wasn’t exactly the most memorable 45 minutes, but the match came alive after the interval, with the two rivals trading blows spectacularly.

Mane opened the scoring, burying a finish past Ederson after superb work by Salah, but Phil Foden equalised with a ruthless strike of his own.

Salah then scored one of the best goals of his career, weaving past several City challenges before netting from a tight angle with his weaker right foot.

Liverpool desperately tried to cling on for a precious three points, but De Bruyne had other ideas, copying Salah and scoring with his weaker left peg. Rodri superbly denied Fabinho a winner with a crucial block with the Brazilian just about to tap into an empty net, and the scores remained level.

2 Liverpool 4-3 Man City, January 2018 Klopp's Liverpool truly announce themselves to Pep's City

In early 2018, Klopp’s Liverpool showed Guardiola’s City that they were capable not only of matching them, but beating them, as Anfield witnessed a Premier League classic.

Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring with a long-range Kop strike, but a thunderous finish from Leroy Sane ensured that the visitors went in level at the break.

In an unbelievable eight-minute spell in the second half, Liverpool scored three times, with Firmino, Mane and Salah all getting on the scoresheet. The latter was from all of 40 yards out following a poor clearance by Ederson.

In true City fashion, though, they didn’t accept that they were beaten, and late goals from Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan made for a nervy finale. There was even time for Sergio Aguero to hit the side-netting in the dying seconds.

Pep Guardiola's 9 worst defeats at Manchester City – ranked

Pep Guardiola has endured some tough defeats as Manchester City manager, and is now in the worst run of his career.

ByRoss Kilvington Nov 27, 2024 1 Man City 2-1 Liverpool, January 2019 The most high-quality game in Premier League history?

This may surprise some as a pick for No.1, but it gets the nod because there arguably hasn’t been a Premier League game in history played at a higher level.

This meeting at the Etihad in January 2019 saw both City and Liverpool somewhere close to the absolute peak of their powers.

The Reds went into the match seven points ahead of their adversaries, and in hindsight, their failure to avoid defeat ultimately proved costly in this tense title battle with Guardiola’s side.

Liverpool somehow hadn’t taken the lead in the first half when Mane hit the post and John Stones cleared off the line to deny the on-rushing Salah. Aguero then opened the scoring with a brilliant effort, but Firmino finished off an incredible team move to equalise in the second half.

It was left to Sane to separate the two teams, with the German beating Alisson with a shot that went in off the post. The game would be the only one Liverpool lost in the league.

City won the title on the final day, but the Reds had the consolation of sealing Champions League glory.

This was a match that perfectly summed up the level of football these two great sides can produce against each other.

Neymar endured a nightmare journey in the Saudi Pro League following his high-profile move from Paris Saint-Germain to Al-Hilal in the summer of 2023. After appearing in just five matches in the 2023-24 campaign, the Brazilian suffered an ACL injury while on national team duty and was sidelined for more than a year. He returned to action for Al-Hilal in October 2024 but subsequently picked up yet another injury limiting his appearances to just two AFC Champions League matches in the 2024-25 season. In January 2025, the forward mutually terminated his contract with the Saudi champions and headed back to his homeland to sign for boyhood club Santos.

While many consider the 33-year-old's move to the Middle East a complete disaster, the Saudi Pro League's general manager of marketing communications, Basrawi, assured Neymar that his time in Saudi Arabia was not a disappointment as injuries are part of football.

O’Neil can put the blame on £15m Wolves star if he gets the sack

Wolverhampton Wanderers remain 19th in the Premier League after they were beaten 2-1 by West Ham United at the London Stadium on Monday night.

The Old Gold have only won two of their 15 league matches so far and Gary O’Neil’s job may now be in danger, after The Telegraph reported that he was hanging by a thread ahead of the match.

Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen scored the goals for the home team either side of Matt Doherty’s equaliser, to secure all three points for Julen Lopetegui’s men.

There were some contentious officiating decisions, as always seems to be the case for Wolves, that went against O’Neil’s side in London on Monday.

The VAR decisions that went against Wolves

There were two penalty decisions that went against the Old Gold in the match, with the first coming when Emerson’s challenge, which was not given as a foul on the field, on Goncalo Guedes was adjusted to have been outside of the box, despite it carrying on into the box.

Konstantinos Mavropanos later appeared to foul Jean-Ricner Bellegarde inside the box by standing on the attacker’s foot, although the way that the Wolves man ended up on the floor may not have helped his case.

As you can see in the clip above, there was also a good case to suggest that VAR should have intervened to ask the referee to take a second look at Mavropanos’ challenge on Santiago Bueno in the build-up to the winning goal from Bowen.

However, Wolves’ players also have to take some responsibility for their performances on the pitch. One player who may have let O’Neil, if he is to be sacked, down for the last time is central midfielder Joao Gomes.

Performance in Numbers

Want data and stats? Football FanCast's Performance in Numbers series provides you with the latest match analysis from across Europe.

Joao Gomes' performance in numbers against West Ham

The 23-year-old endured a frustrating evening at the London Stadium as he failed to make an impact on the game in or out of possession.

Gomes was withdrawn from the match in the 78th minute after he had seemingly grown more and more frustrated with the match and the officiating, committing six fouls and being shown a yellow card that has ultimately led to a suspension ahead of the weekend after five cautions this term.

The £15m Brazilian could not have had many complaints if he was shown a second yellow for his persistent fouling, along with his gestures of displeasure towards the referee after his sixth foul – shortly before O’Neil subbed him off.

As you can see in the table above, Gomes struggled badly off the ball as he lost 11 of his 13 duels on the floor and in the air combined, which shows that the West Ham players found it easy to get the better of him in physical contests.

The midfielder also failed to influence the play at the top end of the pitch, with one ‘big chance’ missed and zero created for his teammates, which shows that he let the team down with his performance on and off the ball.

Therefore, Gomes was even worse than VAR for Wolves because his display – as shown by the statistics above – was objectively disappointing, whilst the VAR decisions were contentious, rather than stonewall errors.

Marnus Labuschagne guides Glamorgan to seven-wicket win with unbeaten fifty

Despite Ben Duckett coming close to twin tons, Nottinghamshire were below par, particularly with the ball

ECB Reporters Network17-Apr-2022An unbeaten half-century by world No. 1 Test batsman Marnus Labuschagne guided Glamorgan to a seven-wicket victory over Nottinghamshire in the LV= Insurance County Championship, ending their first visit to Trent Bridge for a red-ball match since 2007 with a first win on the ground since 1998.Chasing 166 to win in the fourth innings after taking Nottinghamshire’s final two second-innings wickets inside the first hour of play, Glamorgan wrapped up a 23-points win before tea on the final afternoon.Australia’s Labuschagne, in his first game back with the Welsh county after successful summers in 2019 and 2021, was dropped on 25, although it is doubtful that the miss had any bearing on the outcome of the match. It is a sobering result for Nottinghamshire, a popular tip to be Division Two champions this season. Ben Duckett came close to scoring a century in each innings but it was generally a below-par performance by the home side, particularly with the ball.James Pattinson, in his first match back at Trent Bridge, was outbowled by fellow Aussies Michael Neser and Michael Hogan, while the Australia-born Netherlands seamer Timm van der Gugten made an outstanding contribution both with bat and ball.Nottinghamshire added 18 runs to their overnight lead of 147 before Glamorgan removed their last two wickets. Brett Hutton shouldered arms to the ball that bowled him, one of three dismissals in the match where the batter offered no shot. Joey Evison made a creditable 37 before gloving a legside catch to wicketkeeper Chris Cooke as he went to pull James Weighell.Evison batted with a runner and was unable to bowl as Glamorgan set about their chase, one in which Nottinghamshire needed a salvo of early wickets if they were to create any real pressure for the batters on a wicket that had lasted well.None was forthcoming, openers David Lloyd and Andrew Salter rattling along at four runs an over before the latter departed in the 14th, the home side’s ambitions not helped by Pattinson conceding 22 in three overs.Salter was lbw as left-arm spinner Liam Patterson-White managed to squeeze the ball past his inside edge. There was a second setback for Glamorgan in the last over before lunch when Lloyd was also out to a ball he chose to leave, Dane Paterson bringing one back to clip off stump.Paterson and Patterson-White applied a squeeze after lunch. That changed when Labuschagne lofted the left-arm spinner for six over long-off and Sam Northeast crashed four through the covers but when Northeast took on a short ball from Pattinson in the next over, he was caught at long-leg by Paterson, who struggled to track the flight of the ball against the glare of the sky before landing on his back with ball in hand.Northeast’s dismissal took one of Glamorgan’s potential match-winners out of the equation but others remained, not least Labuschagne, who had a let-off behind the stumps on 25 when Tom Moores dived across first slip but could not cling on to an edge off Paterson’s bowling.Labuschagne completed his half-century, a relatively workmanlike affair, when he cut Pattinson for just his third four, before Kiran Carlson, who made 47 in a stand worth 74, completed the victory with a flourish, handing Pattinson the indignity of being hooked for six to win the contest with 39 overs to spare.

SCL must finally bin Birmingham dud who Eustace thought was "great"

Birmingham City will hope 2025 is the year they immediately return back to the Championship, knowing full well that League One can swallow some gigantic clubs whole.

After all, when you glance at the current third-tier standings, the likes of former FA Cup winners Wigan Athletic are just above the relegation spots, whilst ex-Premier League outfit Bolton Wanderers are a couple of points shy of the playoff positions themselves.

Therefore, Chris Davies will hope his team can keep the wins coming to bounce back up to the second tier at the first time of asking, with the Birmingham boss managing to get the very best out of players that were purchased even before his tenure got underway when the Blues were attempting to stave off their relegation doom.

Birmingham's best transfer business in recent years

Although the 2023/24 season would end with Birmingham falling down to League One, the summer transfer business before a ball was kicked that campaign has certainly helped Davies in the here and now.

The likes of Keshi Anderson entering the building on a free transfer has now proven to be a masterstroke, with the experienced winger helping himself to three goals and three assists in league action to date, whilst securing Krystian Bielik’s services has also helped the promotion chasers look resolute at the back down a division.

Birmingham City loan midfielderKrystian Bielik.

During Birmingham’s recent 2-0 win over Bristol Rovers at St. Andrew’s, the Polish titan won 100% of his duels, whilst also confidently amassing 107 touches as a key part of the Blues’ defence in League One.

There is, of course, Jay Stansfield too who returned over the summer and has scored ten league goals in 13 outings.

Not all of the club’s ventures in the market have gone on to be overwhelming success stories, however.

That includes Tyler Roberts who in comparison to Stansfield has not enjoyed a fun time of in offensive areas.

Tyler Roberts' time at Birmingham

Roberts hasn’t featured for Davies whatsoever since the ex-Tottenham Hotspur coach took the reins at the Blues, with the former Leeds United man shifted out on loan to Northampton Town in August.

He didn’t really impress anyone across Birmingham’s disastrous relegation campaign either, despite then-manager John Eustace stating that Roberts had experienced a “great” pre-season after just putting pen to paper on a move to the club in the summer of 2023.

Whilst he did serve up a stunning assist for the aforementioned Stansfield to briefly display his prior Premier League credentials under Marcelo Bielsa, that is the only goal contribution Roberts has next to his name for his parent employers from 21 forgettable games.

Moreover, he has tumbled down the pecking order under Davies due to the likes of Tomoki Iwata and Willum Thor Willumsson now at the manager’s disposal in the midfield ranks, alongside Alfie May leading the line competently in another spot the Welshman can operate in.

Unfortunately for the 25-year-old, his time at Sixfields hasn’t seen him set the world alight either, with just 12.3 accurate passes managed per league clash, alongside only mustering up two assists from 16 league matches.

With Marc Leonard also present at St. Andrew’s as a back-up option that can create constant openings from midfield, there doesn’t seem to be a spot for Roberts at Birmingham anymore, especially if Davies’ men seal an instant promotion back up a league.

Whilst there would have been excitement in the air when Roberts penned a deal to join the club last summer, having scored ten goals in the Championship for the Whites and other teams, Birmingham could now be best placed to move on their dud permanently when his Northampton loan stint expires.
