Inter Miami: Lionel Messi Scores Full Debut Brace

When Lionel Messi stood over a free-kick in the final stages of his first game in an Inter Miami shirt, there was only ever going to be one outcome. The Barcelona legend stuck to the script to secure the winner in style on his debut, and has since continued his solid start to life in America. Now making his first start for the club, Messi made things look easy once more, as has been the case throughout the entirety of his career, netting a brace in his full debut while also picking up an assist. From six games without a win before Messi’s arrival, Inter Miami have now won two consecutive games in what is clear evidence of the impact that one of the best players of all time can have on a side.David Beckham will be hoping to see his club reach new heights in MLS following a whole host of new arrivals but for now, he’ll be delighted to see them impressing during the Leagues Cup.

Lionel Messi scores full debut brace

Inter Miami defeated Atlanta United 4-0 in the tournament, and Messi was the star of the show – as you can see in the highlights below. The former Paris Saint-Germain star opened the scoring as early as the eighth minute before finding the second and his brace in the 22nd minute.

Two goals from Robert Taylor then followed in an impressive display from a side who looked down and out prior to Messi’s arrival.

The Argentine’s first goal was one for Barcelona fans, with Sergio Busquets’ ball over the top of Atlanta’s defence allowing Messi the chance to eventually slot home at the second time of asking after his first effort slammed against the right-hand post.

Orchestrating things the second time around, Messi found Taylor out wide, before being handed the opportunity to simply tap home inside the area for his second of the afternoon.

Not done there, the forward returned the favour to Taylor, allowing the winger to find the back of the net with ease.

Though Taylor played a starring role in the Messi show, the fans made it clear who they came to see, leaving in their numbers when the World Cup winner was substituted off in the 78th minute. If ever there was a moment which represented the icon’s popularity, it is that.

What is Lionel Messi’s salary at Inter Miami?

Fighting off interest from elsewhere, it wasn’t just the project that convinced Messi to make the move to Miami this summer, with Beckham paying his new star man a hefty salary.

According to Marca, Messi will earn up to $54m (£41.85m) in his first season at Inter Miami, in what is an eye-watering amount.

Given the eyes that he’ll bring to both the cub and MLS, it could well prove to be a worthwhile number, however.

So far, we’ve seen the likes of Kim Kardashian and Lebron James make appearances in the stands, watching on in awe as Messi does what only Messi does best.

As the spectacle continues, too, things will only get even better for Inter Miami, who have also welcomed Jordi Alba this summer, as they look to take things up to another level in America.

From the foot of the table, Beckham’s club could soon find themselves competing with the best sides that America has to offer.

'We're looking at England game as a quarter-final' – Zampa

Following their two washouts, Australia are viewing their game against England as a quarter-final according to Adam Zampa

Brydon Coverdale06-Jun-2017

Adam Zampa: ‘If we do scrape into the finals, then [the two washouts] do not really matter’•Getty Images

After two washouts from two matches, Australia have been left with no option but to treat their final Champions Trophy group game against England as if it were a knockout. On Monday, Australia were firmly on track for victory against Bangladesh when rain set in to leave them four overs short of the 20 required to constitute a match, after they were also rained off against New Zealand. That has left Australia in second position in their group on two points from two matches, and means that whichever team wins the New Zealand-Bangladesh fixture on Friday will be ahead of Australia, irrespective of the England-New Zealand result today. So, Australia must beat England the following day in order to progress to the semi-finals.”It would be frustrating if the results don’t go our way towards the end of the tournament,” legspinner Adam Zampa said after the Bangladesh game. “If we do scrape into the finals, then it doesn’t really matter. It is what it is at the moment. If we can play well against England and get into the finals, none of what has happened really matters.”We just spoke about it in the team meeting then. We’re looking at it as a quarter-final. Australians in ICC tournaments in the past have thrived on that pressure and hopefully we can do the same.”Playing his first match of the Champions Trophy, Zampa picked up 2 for 13 against Bangladesh but was asked to bowl only four overs, and did not come on until the 35th over, after part-time offspinner Travis Head had already sent down eight overs. Zampa has often been overlooked in Australia’s ODI selections recently, despite being their leading wicket-taker in the format last year.”It probably didn’t help with the two left-handers in,” Zampa said. “Heady’s bowling really well at the moment and the other end was with the wind, so the quicks were coming from that end. Heady is doing a great job. Preferably Smithy doesn’t want me to bowl to two left-handers. Luckily we do have Heady and Maxy to bowl those overs.”I think we’ve seen with selections in Australia and other places, with the firepower and the depth that we have with the quicks and the allrounders and Heady bowling really well, I only come into consideration when the wickets suit. I think a used wicket like today was somewhere I could play a role.”Having spent some time getting legspinning advice from Shane Warne in Birmingham last week, Zampa is now seeking counsel of a different kind. His unusual hairstyle, which team-mate Glenn Maxwell described as “very shocking”, looked a little more respectable in the Bangladesh game.”It probably wasn’t in the best nick for a couple of days but now the missus has arrived and she said I’ve got to tone it,” Zampa said. “As you can see it’s a little bit of a different colour than it was a few days ago. It’s a little bit different… Happy with it now.”I reckon I’m the guy the blokes go to for a bit of a mood change. The last couple of hours or so I was trying to keep the boys up and about. Undies on the head a little bit when you’re watching the rain. Try and make the boys laugh wherever I can.”

Dyche Could Repeat Everton’s Doucoure Move With £26m ‘Major Talent’

Everton are poised to move for Almeria forward El Bilal Toure this summer after narrowly missing out on relegation from the Premier League during the 22/23 campaign.

Could Everton sign El Bilal Toure?

While Sean Dyche's Toffees are believed to be in advanced negotiations for the Malian striker, Italian Serie A side Almeria are also considering a swoop following Manchester United's vested interest in prodigious talisman Rasmus Hojlund.

That's following some recent updates from Fabrizio Romano, underlining Atalanta's position on their "top target", but also hinting that Blues owner Farhad Moshiri could yet move; the Merseyside outfit have already blown the Nerazzurri out of the water with a €30m (£26m) bid.

The pre-eminent transfer specialist since confirmed that Almeria are honing in on Lorient's Ibrahima Kone to replace their prized asset, claiming that Everton are "pushing to make it happen".

How good is El Bilal Toure?

Just 21-years-old, Bilal Toure scored seven goals and supplied a further two assists from just 15 LaLiga starts last term after completing a transfer from Reims for €10m (£9m).

The 15-cap Mali international – with five goals to his name – would link up with compatriot Abdoulaye Doucoure at Goodison Park, and could prove to emulate the box-crashing midfielder – whose goal against Bournemouth on the final day of the season preserved Everton's top-flight status.

Praised for one "towering" performance several months ago by The Athletic's Patrick Boyland, Doucoure has been instrumental under Dyche and scored all five of his strikes last term under the 52-year-old's wing, with the former Clarets boss taking the reins in January.

Signing from Watford for £20m in 2020, the 30-year-old has demonstrated the path needed to succeed on the Blue side of Liverpool, headstrong, positive and resilient – ranking among the top 2% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 11% for touches in the attacking penalty area and the top 20% for blocks per 90, as per FBref.

abdoulaye-doucoure-premier-league-everton-transfers

Bilal Toure can indeed mirror his £120k-per-week countryman's endeavours by maintaining his similarly fruitful mentality, himself ranking among the top 4% of forwards for clearances per 90.

This illustrates tenacity and willingness to get stuck in, complementing his teammates with a bustling approach – all the while channelling his innate goalscoring instinct.

The "major talent" – as he has previously been dubbed by Graeme Bailey – boasted an average Sofascore rating of 6.81 in the league last term, taking an average of 1.4 shots per game and demonstrating his versatility by dividing his seven strikes up – four scored with his right foot, one with his left; Bilal Toure netted twice with his head.

He also bettered Everton forwards Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Ellis Simms and Neal Maupay's respective Sofascore ratings (6.74, 6.62 and 6.56) which bodes well for his future fortunes.

In securing such a promising starlet, Dyche would wield a forward with genuine capabilities of spearheading an ascent to prominence once again, and it could be a big season for the Toffees if they manage to beat Atalanta and secure Bilal Toure's signature.

Lisandro Martinez Lucky To Avoid Red After Jude Bellingham Foul

Pre-season is a time in which most managers likely want nothing more than to just get the bubble wrap out for their players, forever hoping that it will do the trick if they dare square off against Lisandro Martinez in a not-so-friendly friendly game. The so-called ‘butcher’ has so far spent most of pre-season slicing up the calves of some of Europe’s best attackers. First, came his horror challenge on Bukayo Saka, as Manchester United defeated Arsenal 2-0. And, if that wasn’t controversial enough, Martinez then turned his attention to Jude Bellingham, wiping the Real Madrid midfielder out entirely.Taking the attention away from United’s 2-0 defeat, Martinez sparked a reaction from Bellingham, who was rightly left displeased. The commentators were quick to jump the gun with the incident, however, getting slightly mixed up on what actually happened.

Lisandro Martinez and Jude Bellingham clash after tackle

On very rare occasions, a defender can be excused for a shocking challenge, with the ball there to be won. This was not one of those occasions, though. It was anything but.

As Bellingham shifted the ball onto his Madrid teammate Vinicus Junior, Martinez came recklessly sliding in, catching the England international on his right leg in a needless challenge that potentially could have ended up as a red card.

Reacting, Bellingham instantly sprung to his feet to confront the Manchester United defender, pushing the Argentine. Mason Mount then briefly got involved, before things were separated in what was a feisty affair.

The commentary team of Stewart Gardner and Ben Thorn didn’t exactly have their best moment, either, with one accusing Bellingham of hitting Martinez in the face, when the incident quite clearly shows that this was not the case.

As you can hear in the video above, one of the commentators said: “He didn’t just push him there, did he? He struck him in the face as well.”

Speaking after the game on the incident, Bellingham said, via The Guardian: “The little tiff with Martínez is one of those things. He is a brilliant player. I came in at half-time and I was f’ing this and f’ing that. But when he came over to wish me all the best when he came off, I really respected it.

“I know what goes on on the pitch stays on the pitch. I saw him at the end of the game and wished him well. I can respect that when two players are trying to win for their team and can come together and be respectful after the game. He is a great competitor and a great player. Just like me, he wants to win. Sometimes it spills over.”

How have Real Madrid performed in pre-season?

Defeating Manchester United 2-0 after goals from Bellingham and Joselu, Madrid continued a fairly successful pre-season.

So far, they have beaten AC Milan 3-2, coming from behind, and defeated the Red Devils. Their focus now turns to a pre-season El Clasico, as Los Blancos get their first encounter of the season with Barcelona.

In a preview of what’s to come, we may get an indication about the La Liga title race, even though the season is a few weeks away.

Mashrafe urges senior quartet to step up in Australia Tests

The senior bowler said Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah will have to lead the way against the first Australian Test side to visit Bangladesh in 11 years

Mashrafe Mortaza believes Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan will be key to Bangladesh’s bowling threat against Australia•Getty Images

The role of Bangladesh’s most-experienced Test quartet will be vital to their chances of success against Australia. Mashrafe Mortaza, former Test and current ODI captain, who was part of a training camp in Dhaka over the last five weeks, believes Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah will have to lead the way against the first Australian Test side to visit Bangladesh in 11 years.”I expect our four senior players to put a price on their wicket,” Mashrafe told ESPNcricinfo. “They must put up a statement in the middle that the young players can follow. Tamim is in the best form of his career. He and Imrul can provide a good start. We have Shakib and [Mehidy Hasan] in our spin department. If one of the fast bowlers have a good spell of three or four wickets, there will be a possibility for us. These will be expected when the situation arises in the match.”Mashrafe said that Bangladesh’s improved mindset has put them in a position of strength ahead of the Test series. The confidence, he believes, has soared after they convincingly beat England and Sri Lanka in the last ten months. Although the losses in Christchurch [against New Zealand], Hyderabad [against India] and Galle [against Sri Lanka] were largely due to poor performances their valiance in the Chittagong [against England] and Wellington defeats didn’t go unnoticed.”More important than winning or losing is their mentality. I am witnessing in the dressing room that their mindset is setting them apart from previous teams, and they are in the making of bigger things in the next two years.”It is encouraging enough to think that they will fight, which is a better expectation than only hoping for a result. This has also been their best preparation ahead of any Test series,” he said.Mashrafe said that the batsmen have to continue to be hungry and not be complacent with a milestone but go on to make a bigger score each time they are settled at the crease.”I think they have been working on their mentality, which has been an area of concern for the last 15 years. We never had the patience. After scoring a century, a batsman has to think of coming back the next day and converting it into a big score. Why not a double-hundred? It doesn’t happen every day but utilising an opportunity properly is vital.”Say someone scored a double-hundred but the others haven’t contributed as much. The team score comes to 400-450, so it becomes important for the set batsman to make it count. Someone who gets out in the forties has to think of playing a long innings, not just be happy with a fifty,” said Mashrafe.Mashrafe believes Bangladesh will have to raise their game against Australia more than what they did against England at home last year. He said that tackling Australia’s bowling attack, even without Mitchell Starc, will be critical to doing well in the two Tests.”I don’t want to create unnecessary pressure on the players but I am expecting a good Test series,” he said. “Australia is the most passionate Test team in the world and their best possible team is coming to Bangladesh. They have Cummins, Hazlewood and Lyon in the bowling line-up.”The work for our team isn’t going to be easy but if we play one level better than what we did against England, it would be possible to win, but I am not going to put any pressure on them in terms of results.”

Man United Prepare €80m Bid To Sign €240,000-p/w Star

Manchester United are allegedly preparing an €80m offer to sign Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.

Are Man United signing another midfielder?

The Red Devils and Erik ten Hag have been productive so far this summer in the transfer market, securing the services of Mason Mount and Andre Onana from Chelsea and Inter Milan in separate big-money deals.

The club also look set to splash the cash again on Atalanta forward Rasmus Hojlund, with a transfer worth a total of £72m being finalised and potentially announced on Saturday.

Read The Latest Man United Transfer News HERE…

Fabrizio Romano recently claimed that United’s focus will be on signing another new midfielder after Hojlund, and one player who has been heavily linked is Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat.

The Morocco international, who worked under Ten Hag at FC Utrecht, has remained coy when asked about his future recently, saying:

“I don’t know if I’m leaving… maybe I can stay here at Fiorentina. I don’t know, I could remain.”

However, reports this week have claimed that a move to Man United is advancing, with the player’s representatives in Manchester to discuss a deal. Fiorentina want around £30m for the 26-year-old, but it appears as if the club also have their eyes on Tchouameni.

The Faithful MUFC relayed an update from Spanish outlet Sport in the last 48 hours regarding Tchouameni and a potential move to Old Trafford.

It is claimed that Ten Hag has personally asked United officials to sign the midfielder over the coming weeks, with those in Manchester now preparing an offer ‘very similar’ to the one Real Madrid paid one year ago – a guaranteed fee of €80m (£69m).

Aurelien Tchouameni

Who is Aurelien Tchouameni?

Tchouameni is primarily a defensive midfielder who can also play slightly further forward in a central midfield role if needed. The 23-year-old, sponsored by Nike, came through the academy at Bordeaux before joining AS Monaco in 2020.

He spent two years and made 95 appearances for Monaco before signing for Real Madrid, where he has gone on to turn out on 50 occasions. The France international is valued at €85m by Transfermarkt and is under contract until 2028.

He has caught the eye at the Bernabeu since making the move, with United legend Rio Ferdinand saying Tchouameni is a “superb talent” who can produce “moments out of nowhere”.

“Listen, Tchouameni is a young kid, he’s going to make mistakes but he’s a superb talent, he produces moments out of nowhere, incredible player.

“Replacing Pogba in a France XI is not an easy task, but so far, Tchouameni has been superb. Tchouameni showed why he plays for Real Madrid. He has the patience, talent, control, he has everything you need.”

He is on a deal worth €240,000-a-week in Spain, though, so alongside a big fee, you’d expect United would need to offer the player a huge salary if they are to stand a chance of securing his services.

It could well be one to keep an eye on, but with the finances involved, you could argue that a move for Amrabat is more realistic, as the club’s spending will go over £150m after Hojlund signs on the dotted line.
