Crystal Palace Readying Move For "Prolific" £8k-p/w Star

Crystal Palace are now readying a move for Bologna striker Sydney van Hooijdonk, having recently been given a major boost in the race for his signature…

What's the latest Crystal Palace transfer news?

In a recent interview with GiveMeSport, transfer insider Dean Jones confirmed that Palace will be looking to add another striker to the squad before tonight's 11pm transfer deadline, saying:

"I think the main thing for Hodgson, from what I understand, is he just wants another goal-getter. He wants to know that he's got another option in the box that can convert chances.

“Hodgson and his team are very confident that Crystal Palace aren't going to be in relegation trouble this season. But they are also aware that they're probably two injuries short of being really up against it. That's why they're looking to add a couple of faces in these last few days."

At one stage, Hugo Ekitike was considered one of the Eagles' key striker targets, but it appears as though the Paris Saint-Germain forward could be on his way to Eintracht Frankfurt instead, as that is where his current employers want to send him.

In the same report from The Evening Standard, it is detailed that Leicester City's Kelechi Iheanacho was the primary target, but Palace have now pulled out of the race to sign the Nigerian, as they intend to bring in a more versatile forward.

According to a report from Football Insider, Crystal Palace are now readying a late move for Van Hooijdonk, having been handed a major boost in the race for his signature, with his move to Bundesliga side Wolfsburg recently breaking down.

Wolfsburg submitted an £8m offer, but were unable to agree a deal with Bologna, opening the door for a late move to England, with both Palace and Brentford keen on signing the forward.

The Eagles are looking to replace Wilfried Zaha, who left to join Galatasaray earlier this summer, and the Bologna marksman could fit the bill, particularly considering he is versatile enough to be able to play as a striker or on the left wing.

Who is Sydney van Hooijdonk?

The son of former Celtic man Pierre van Hooijdonk was born in Breda, the Netherlands, and made his breakthrough with local club NAC Breda, where he scored 16 goals in the 2020/21 campaign, and he managed to do even better last season.

With Eredivisie side Heerenveen, the Dutchman managed to score 19 goals in all competitions, which indicated he may have been ready to compete for first-team football at Bologna, but he has played just three minutes of football so far this season.

From the outside, it is a little strange the Italian club are unwilling to give the 23-year-old a chance, but Bologna's loss could be Palace's gain, as they are in the mix to bring in a proven goalscorer before tonight's transfer deadline.

Lauded as "prolific" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig during his time with NAC Breda, Van Hooijdonk has proven he deserves a chance in the Premier League, and Palace should move swiftly to ensure they get a deal done before 11pm.

Mitchell Santner's challenge now to disguise the 'claw'

New Zealand’s left-arm spinner claimed Fakhar Zaman with his version of the carrom ball, but now he knows everyone is talking about it

Inspired by watching R Ashwin. Honed in English county cricket. Unfurled against Pakistan in Hamilton. Mitchell Santner’s new delivery, his version of the carrom ball, has been the talk of New Zealand over the last few days.During the fourth one-day international at Seddon Park, Santner defeated Fakhar Zaman, who was well set on 54, when the opener advanced down the pitch and was bowled. Closer inspection revealed Santner had flicked the ball out of his fingers, rather than spinning it in the traditional way for a left-armer, and the delivery gripped to turn the opposite way, from the left-handers leg to off stump.”I’ve been working on a few things and the grip is very similar to Ashwin’s. He used it against us in the Test series over there and I thought ‘yeah, that’s not a bad ball’ so thought I’d give it a crack,” Santner said after New Zealand wrapped up a 5-0 whitewash in Wellington.”I actually used it in county cricket and some of the T20 stuff over there, but on a pitch that suits, it works better because it’s hard to put a lot on it. I am just flicking it out. If there is a little bit of spin, ideally I’d use it a little bit more.”The challenge now for Santner is that everyone is looking for the delivery, which has been termed the “Santner Claw” in New Zealand.”You guys have been analysing it quite a bit now so I might have to put it away,” he joked. “I might have to disguise it a bit more because every time I look up it’s on the big screen. It adds another element to my game. I tend to just work with changes of pace so if one can go the other way it puts a bit of doubt in the batsman’s mind. If you can stay one step ahead, predict what the batsman can do, then it’s ideal.”Santner chipped in with quietly effective performances with the ball during the five one-day internationals: 1 for 34 in Nelson, 1 for 43 in Hamilton (when the carrom ball came out) and then 3 for 40 in Wellington when Pakistan got closest to nipping a victory. He was aided by New Zealand’s quicks having invariably made inroads to leave Pakistan in recovery mode, although at the Basin Reserve responded to his captain’s call to quell a late charge which put New Zealand under a rare spot of pressure. Santner responded with the wickets of Haris Sohail and Shadab Khan, the two half-century makers, before adding Faheem Ashraf”On a holding wicket like that there was more chance for me to get a few wickets and that’s what happened,” he said.New Zealand are unbeaten during their season – 12 victories alongside an abandoned T20 against West Indies – as their attention now turns to the three T20s against Pakistan followed by the marquee part of their summer with the T20 tri-series involving Australia and England before the latter stay for one-day and Test series.”Looking forward to both those series, they are quite big for us,” Santner said. “But first things first it’s the T20s against Pakistan and hopefully we can take the momentum into the tri-series.”

Manjot Kalra leads India Under-19 to World Cup glory

The opener smashed an unbeaten 101 off 102 balls to steer a chase of 217 and give the side an unprecedented fourth Under-19 World Cup title

The Report by Shashank Kishore in Mount Maunganui03-Feb-2018
India sauntered to a record fourth Under-19 World Cup title in front of a partisan crowd of 4000 odd at Bay Oval, to finish an unbeaten campaign that had begun against Australia at the same venue three weeks ago. The margin of victory then was 100 runs, and it was comprehensive in the grand final as well – eight wickets. To win the tournament, India pulled off their second highest successful chase in U-19 World Cups, after the 226 to beat Australia in Townsville in 2012. Unmukt Chand had led that chase with a sublime century, and on Saturday another Delhi boy, Manjot Kalra, reprised the feat. In the tournament opener against Australia, Kalra had missed his century by 14 runs in an effort to hit out; he was unbeaten on 101 off 102 balls in the final.Kalra, driven by instinct and hand-eye coordination, powered India along with fellow opener Prithvi Shaw, after a short rain delay four overs into the chase. It began with a free-hit which he biffed for six, and the high notes came when he took Jack Edwards for three boundaries in the 11th over. When Will Sutherland got one to move away and bowl Shaw for 29, India were 71 for 1.0:44

Manjot Kalra: Fifth batsman to score a ton in an U-19 World Cup final

Australia’s relief was short lived, as they watched the in-form Shubman Gill – averaging over 100 in Youth ODIs and having made six successive 50-plus scores – play three exquisite cover drives within five minutes of his arrival at the crease. Kalra went on to bring up a 47-ball half-century. The signs were ominous for Australia there on and Kalra finished with a strike rate of nearly 100, having struck eight fours and three sixes. Wicketkeeper-batsman Harvik Desai chipped in with a spunky 47 and it was his sliced four over backward point that triggered manic celebrations in the Indian camp. However, to say India’s win was down to just their batting would not do justice to left-arm spinner Shiva Singh. Despite not having taken a wicket in the tournament, Shiva had kept his spot because of his economy and ability to maintain pressure in the middle overs. In the final, he made a telling contribution – 10-0-36-2.Nathan McSweeney’s dismissal for 23 was particularly significant because Australia were just starting to accelerate going into the last 10 overs of their innings. Looking to nudge the ball on the leg side, McSweeney was deceived in flight and lobbed a simple return catch. In his next over, Shiva removed Will Sutherland with an arm ball that held its line to flick the inside edge to the wicketkeeper. The catch was the start of a turnaround for Desai, who had earlier missed two half-chances off Australia’s openers.ICC/Getty Images

Max Bryant, who had tallied just 93 runs in five innings coming into the final, looked in sparkling touch until he slapped Ishan Porel’s short ball straight to Abhishek Sharma at cover point to give India an opening. Edwards carried on, hitting Shivam Mavi for back-to-back boundaries in the seventh over to sustain Australia’s aggression. With Australia having raised their fifty in the 10th over and the pitch holding no demons, Edwards and Jason Sangha had an opportunity to press on.That wasn’t to be, as Porel claimed his second wicket when Edwards punched a short delivery straight to Kamlesh Nagarkoti at cover. It should have been 53 for 3 almost immediately, but for Desai’s reprieve of Jonathan Merlo on 0 as he attempted a cut off Shiva in the 11th over. Desai found redemption in the next over , when he dived full length to his right to snaffle Sangha. Australia were in trouble at 59 for 3.Param Uppal, Australia’s top scorer in the domestic Under-19 tournament in the lead-up to the World Cup, brought a sense of calm to proceedings. He exhibited a strong back-foot game against pace and equal adeptness against spin to milk runs through conventional means. Uppal’s confidence rubbed off on Merlo, who wasn’t afraid to experiment. He played reverse-sweeps and delicate paddles and they raised a half-century stand in 11.2 overs. As Merlo grew in confidence, he wasn’t afraid to get across the stumps and sweep left-arm spinner Anukul Roy against the turn. Australia looked to shift gears, but lost Uppal for 34 when he chipped a leading edge back to Roy. The two deliveries leading up the wicket had played their part: Roy had seen Uppal charge down and shortened his length, and then fired the next one full. Off the third, he deceived Uppal in flight as the batsman looked to work the ball against the turn.McSweeney then came in and played some sublime shots, but the pattern of batsmen wasting starts just when Australia looked to take off continued. From 183 for 4, Australia collapsed. losing their last six wickets for 33 runs to leave 16 deliveries unused in their innings.India started their chase aggressively, with Shaw unfurling three exquisite cover drives. Then his trigger movement of having his back foot move towards the leg side worked against him. Gill had the opportunity to move past Alick Athanaze as the leading run-getter in the tournament. His 30-ball 31 was attractive, but he was out charging the offspinner Uppal.By then, India had powered to 131 for 2, and Kalra took charge and led his team to Under-19 World Cup glory.

Man Utd: Ten Hag’s "weak link" has rinsed the club for 111 weeks

Manchester United’s recent defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League saw them enter the international break occupying 11th spot in the league table, already six points behind Manchester City.

Erik ten Hag would have been hoping the momentum that was gathered during the final few months of the 2022/23 campaign, which saw the Red Devils win their first piece of silverware in six years combined with Champions League qualification, was going to enable them to begin the current season in a productive manner.

The Old Trafford side made seven new signings during the summer transfer window, bringing in Andre Onana, Mason Mount, Rasmus Hojlund, Jonny Evans, Altay Bayindir, Sofyan Amrabat and Sergio Reguilon, and it’s fair to say it wasn’t quite the window many of the supporters were anticipating.

Only Onana has made an impact thus far, with Mount playing only twice and Hojlund making his first appearance against Arsenal. Ten Hag will be hoping it is money well spent following years of big-money signings letting the club down.

One name that immediately springs to mind is Jadon Sancho, who has endured a poor start to the current campaign and has failed to live up to the staggering amount that United shelled out on him just two years ago.

What is Jadon Sancho’s salary at Manchester United?

The Englishman had emerged as one of the most talented youngsters on the continent during his spell at Borussia Dortmund, registering an impressive 114 goal contributions – 50 goals and 64 assists – across just 137 games for the club, winning the German cup too in what was a highly productive four-season spell.

jadon-sancho

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer signed the winger in the summer of 2021 for a fee in the region of £73m and this was a lot of pressure to heap on a player who was only 21-years-old.

That pressure and expectancy were likely only heightened by the reported £250k-per-week wage that the fleet-footed trickster has been on since his arrival two years ago, according to Capology.

How much has Jadon Sancho earned so far at Manchester United?

The youngster has been at the club for a total of 111 weeks and during that time, he has roughly earned an eye-watering £26m in wages alone at United.

Combine this with his transfer fee of £73m and Sancho has already cost the Old Trafford side just shy of £100m at £99m and judging by his form for the club since arriving, this has turned out to be a colossal waste of money.

The winger has a contract until 2026, meaning he still has three years to continue rinsing the club unless they move him on.

Jadon Sancho

A move to Saudi Arabia fell through at the last minute earlier this week, and he will remain in Manchester until January at least, ensuring Ten Hag will need to find a way to get the best out of him.

Does Jadon Sancho deserve £250k-per-week?

Upon his arrival, it looked like United had signed a player who has the potential to turn into one of the next big superstars, especially going by his record in Germany and his meteoric rise since leaving Man City in 2017 to take a chance at the Bundesliga outfit.

Across 38 games during his first season, he scored just five goals and grabbed three assists, which was a large drop-off from the 26 goal contributions he had recorded during his last season in Dortmund.

His form may have been down to the fact he was a newcomer in a league which he hadn’t played in before and while the massive transfer fee may also have played a part, it was clear that things weren’t going as anticipated and perhaps Ten Hag had a solution.

Indeed, Sancho scored winning goals against Liverpool and Leicester City as he played the full 90 minutes in Ten Hag’s first seven league matches in charge, while also scoring in the Europa League, and it appeared as though progress was being made.

As the World Cup loomed on the horizon, Sancho began to lose some of his earlier momentum and was even dubbed as United’s “weak link” by Tom McDermott in October last year.

After the match against West Ham United on 30 October, Sancho didn’t turn out for the club again until the following February, even missing a place in the England squad for the World Cup.

It wasn’t due to an injury however, but more so a lack of form which meant he was dropped, and then he subsequently lost his fitness in the process.

The winger finally made his comeback and netted four goals before the end of the season, but he still came under some criticism from former United star Paul Scholes following the defeat to Sevilla in the Europa League, who said:

"During the warm-ups we were eulogising about the crowd and saying how aggressive and hostile it was.

"When the United players see and hear that, they need to go into the dressing room and think, 'I need to be ready for this and my first touch has got to be ready.

"You see Jadon Sancho in the first five minutes tonight, the ball bounced off him three times, terrible weight of pass, too. I’m a big fan of the lad, but you’ve got to liven up and be ready."

Does Jadon Sancho have a future at Manchester United?

The 23-year-old has failed to start a league match so far this term, coming on as a substitute in three of their four games, and it looks as though Ten Hag may be utilising other options across his frontline.

The international break has come at the right time for the Red Devils, and it could give the Dutchman a chance to discuss Sancho’s future.

Jadon Sancho

The 5 foot 10 dud has rinsed the club spectacularly since the summer of 2021 and with his extortionate wages, the manager won't want him picking up a pay packet from the sidelines.

This could suggest a move away from Old Trafford will come sooner rather than later and what looked like a deal which could’ve turned out to be a wonderful piece of business by the club has descended into a nightmare for all involved.

Everton: Dyche could ditch Mykolenko for ‘excellent’ Finch Farm gem

Amid what has been another poor start to the campaign for Everton – with just one point from their opening five Premier League games – one issue that has been exposed is the lack of a quality, first-choice option at left-back.

In truth, those woes stretch back to the sale of Lucas Digne during the end of Rafa Benitez's time in charge back in January 2022, with the Frenchman moving to Aston Villa after having racked up 26 goals and assists in 127 games in all competitions for the Toffees.

In his absence, the Merseysiders turned to Ukrainian starlet Vitaliy Mykolenko to fill that void, although the former Dynamo Kyiv has failed to earn a regular role in the side of late, having made just his first league appearance of the season against Arsenal last time out.

The fact that manager Sean Dyche has favoured veteran asset Ashley Young in that role, while Ben Godfrey has also been a makeshift option in recent years, is a stark indication of the club's shortcomings in that department.

Everton manager Sean Dyche.

With that in mind, it may be time for the former Burnley boss to consider looking to the academy in order to find a much-needed solution in that role, with Mykolenko, in particular, having not been up to scratch.

How much did Everton pay for Mykolenko?

It still remains a bizarre decision for the Everton board to have backed Benitez and his decision to part ways with Digne just over 18 months ago, only for the Spaniard himself to depart just days later after receiving the sack.

The exit of the one-time Barcelona full-back ensured that the Merseysiders were forced to dip into the market late in that January window, with then-boss Frank Lampard snapping up Mykolenko for a reported fee of around £17.9m.

The 24-year-old has since made 53 appearances in all competitions following that move from his homeland, albeit having been unable to replicate Digne's attacking threat, after scoring just once and providing no assists in that time.

Those woes in the final third are also laid bare by the fact that the £58k-per-week asset ranks in just the bottom 5% among those in his position in Europe's top five leagues for progressive carries and in just the bottom 37% for pass completion, showcasing his seemingly erratic nature in possession.

It is not as if the 34-cap international has fared much better in a defensive sense, ranking in the top 50% for aerial duels won and in only the top 39% for tackles made, while he also lost seven of his 12 ground duels against the Gunners last time out.

The £13m-rated dud – who was also 'tortured' by Italy's Nicolo Zaniolo while on international duty – may then need to be properly replaced sooner rather than later, rather than relying on the ageing Young and usual centre-back, Godfrey.

Who could replace Mykolenko?

There aren't exactly too many options for Dyche to consider, with the Merseysiders having notably endured the frustration of losing promising left-back talent Ishe Samuels-Smith to Premier League rivals Chelsea over the summer.

Having been included in The Guardian's Next Gen List for 2022, Samuels-Smith looked set for a bright future at Goodison and was even training with the first team last season, hence the disappointment at seeing the 17-year-old move on to Stamford Bridge.

Vitaliy Mykolenko

With the Toffees having also allowed 22-year-old Frenchman, Niels Nkounkou to depart in January, there is a distinct lack of depth in that department – particularly with former loanee Ruben Vinagre also no longer at the club.

That being said, however, a possible replacement for Mykolenko could have presented itself in the form of academy star, Mackenzie Hunt, with the versatile gem having caught the eye at Finch Farm in recent times.

Who is Mackenzie Hunt?

It was not too long ago that the 21-year-old was among those who looked set for a departure heading into the 2022 summer window, with the Englishman having been approaching the end of his contract at the time.

Thankfully, as far as Dyche is concerned, the youngster was subsequently offered a contract extension in June of last year, with the Toffees having made a wise move in keeping the defender on the books – such has been his standout form since then.

While noted as an attacking midfielder by trade, Hunt has slotted in at left-back predominantly over the past year or so, providing two goals and two assists in 23 games in all competitions last term as a marker of his desire to get forward from his defensive berth, unlike Mykolenko.

As The Athletic's Patrick Boyland noted, the promising machine also netted a "special" strike for the U21's in the friendly clash with Braga back in September 2022, producing a spectacular volley from just outside the area on his left foot.

While hampered by injury in the past, Hunt looks to be back fit and firing at present, having also received praise from youth coach Paul Tait for his display against Doncaster Rovers in the recent EFL Trophy meeting:

“Macca [Hunt] was also excellent and he showed his versatility going in at centre-back. He was really good in possession."

Although that display came with the academy sensation lining up in a centre-back berth for a spell, the quality of his performance against senior opposition will have caught the eye, as he notably won 16 duels on the day.

Just as impressive was his ability to play out from the back – in contrast to the awkward Mykolenko – as he successfully completed all six of his attempted dribbles, as well as winning three fouls as a sign of just what a threat he can be in an attacking sense, as per Sofascore.

To be able to replicate such a performance at Premier League level is a different challenge altogether – while Hunt is yet to even make a senior appearance for the Toffees – although with Dyche having an obvious problem at left-back, the Finch Farm prospect could be the perfect answer.

As coisas simplesmente acontecem. O Brenner estava numa noite feliz – afirmou o treinador do São Paulo.

Aliás, saudades do presidente.

Jogou bem contra o Santos, jogou bem contra o Inter, jogou bem contra o Coritiba.

O São Paulo sempre é candidato a título. Não podemos pensar diferente disso

He had Trent Copeland caught behind with a big, fizzing legbreak. Four balls later he completely deceived Sean Abbott.
