Aston Villa struck gold with bargain signing, he’s now worth £31m

Aston Villa pulled off some impressive moves in the market this summer, with Unai Emery bringing a refreshed level of expectation to the club following his arrival in October 2022.

The Villans were driven from 16th place to 7th during the Spaniard’s first season at the club, securing them European football for the 2023/24 campaign and subsequently bolstering their pull in the transfer window.

Five new faces were welcomed to the Midlands in the summer, including the record-breaking signing of Moussa Diaby, who joined from Bayer Leverkusen in a £51.9m deal.

While the lucrative deals are typically the transfers that generate excitement, Villa pulled off an exceptional business move last summer, by signing a player in Boubacar Kamara whose value heavily exceeds the price paid for his signature.

How much did Aston Villa sign Boubacar Kamara for?

Prior to the official opening of the 2022 summer window, Villa announced that they had reached an agreement to sign Marseille midfielder Kamara on a free transfer. Dubbed “high-quality” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, this was quite the coup.

Signed as a 22-year-old, the highly-rated Frenchman was nabbed by the Premier League side at the expiration of his contract with his boyhood club, in a move that was celebrated due to the quality of the player.

Earning £150k-per-week at Villa, the former Ligue 1 ace is the side’s biggest earner, however has shown glimpses of the heights he could hit within his five-year contract at the club.

What is Boubacar Kamara’s market value now?

At the point of making the move to England, the 6 foot midfielder had an expected transfer value (xTV) of €18.9m (£16m), a figure that has since risen to €36.5m (£31m) which is a reflection of Kamara’s current market value, via Football Transfers.

During his time at Villa, the 23-year-old has seen his xTV fluctuate, with it hitting a staggering high of €59m (£50m) towards the end of 2022, telling of just how high his price could spike in the future.

One of the reasons for his dip in value was his time away from the action, as he sustained an ankle injury in March that left him sidelined for a month, with journalist Gregg Evans describing him as “irreplaceable” at the time in his column for The Athletic.

Why is Kamara worth so much?

Hailed as a “phenomenon” by former Marseille ace Rolando, Kamara is a highly valued player in the Midlands, with his place in Emery’s team critical due to his perfectly balanced pivot with Douglas Luiz in the engine room.

It didn’t take long for the Marseille academy graduate to adapt to the Premier League, which is usually a subtle worry when players arrive from abroad with no experience of the physicality of the English game.

As per FBref, the Frenchman orchestrated the midfield by making an average of 2.94 tackles per 90, as well as averaging 1.92 blocks per 90, a decimal that placed him within the top 10% of midfielders in the league.

While keeping a firm lock on threat in the middle of the park, the 23-year-old maintained an average pass completion rate of 84.8% per 90, showcasing his ability to dictate play in an area that’s typically congested.

Villa evidently struck gold by securing the signature of the 2022 free-agent, who has shown performances typical of a player whose market value is bound to soar to even further levels in the future.

Spurs: Ange could ease Maddison blow with £110k-p/w ‘magician’

Tottenham Hotspur were dealt an almighty scare during their clash at Arsenal on Sunday, as James Maddison jolted his knee and went down in a heap. Although the creative leader continued for some time afterwards, he later admitted he had to come off because he was "not 100%".

Whilst the scale of his ailment remains to be seen, it should have Ange Postecoglou sweating about what life would be like without their star man. So, he must get to work on devising a plan for if he is ruled out of this weekend and beyond.

How is James Maddison performing this season?

As the Premier League's second-highest-rated player, with his 8.03 average Sofascore rating largely boosted by his two goals and four assists in six games, it should come as no surprise that his absence would prove catastrophic for the Lilywhites.

They have become heavily reliant on his creativity and desperation for the ball, as he pops up in all kinds of areas in an effort to help knit together the side.

This shows up through the fact that he averaged just shy of 70 touches per game, with such energy a prerequisite for an attacking midfielder in Postecoglou's setup. Such form and devotion to maintaining their play style has been lauded by teammate Heung-min Son: "He’s a really good player. For a couple of years we needed this kind of player to create chances and make passes, which is very important. Playing with him is a joy. Hopefully he can score and assist many goals.".

brennan-johnson-james-maddison-spurs-transfer-premier-league

Replacing him would mark a tough feat, especially given how Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho cleaned them out of the bulk of their creative midfielders. However, perhaps given their surplus of wingers following the signing of Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski could move his tricky skillset into the engine room should he be needed.

Where could Dejan Kulusevski play?

Few boast similar levels of creativity as Maddison, whilst also remaining constantly involved and intelligent in possession.

The Sweden international has posted a 7.23 average rating of his own for this current league campaign, buoyed by his two goals. However, his lack of assists perhaps undersells his contribution, as he is averaging 2.5 key passes per game, alongside 51.5 touches per game, via Sofascore.

Dejan Kulusevski

Were he to move centrally, both of these figures could skyrocket, given how the former Leicester City star is only managing 2.8 key passes per game whilst being handed a free role. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg certainly supports such a notion too, having branded his teammate a "magician" during a training session last year.

In fact, Kulusevski even admitted back in 2022 to modelling his game around a central star, suggesting that the £110k-per-week wizard has enough preparation to fulfil that position: "I study Kevin De Bruyne a lot because he is a phenomenal player and because I want to become like him.

"It depends on the team, on the game. For how we play in Parma, the coach has found the perfect position for me — as a winger. When I was in the Primavera of Atalanta, on the other hand, I played more in the centre because the action had to start from behind. My perfect role? Behind the strikers. When I play, I don’t think about goals or assists."

With the likes of Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur, Oliver Skipp and Pape Sarr all unable to be deployed in a creative role, should Maddison's injury be worse than first thought, at least in the tricky winger they have someone capable of filling in and ensuring the drop off is not too harsh.

Renshaw stands out with debut century

Worcestershire seamer Ed Barnard also impressed on the opening day as 18 wickets fell in seam-friendly conditions

George Dobell at Taunton20-Apr-2018
ScorecardSomewhere in Australia, Cameron Bancroft will be checking the scores and shaking his head ruefully.Matt Renshaw has already claimed (reclaimed, you might argue) Bancroft’s place in the Australia side. Now he is sleeping in his bed (Somerset had already arranged the accommodation), driving his car (ditto) and performing his job in Taunton. If Bancroft has a dog, you can imagine it clawing at the door in a big to escape and curl up on the lap of Renshaw. But for a moment of madness, Bancroft would be with Somerset now. As it is, his contract with the club was annulled in the aftermath of sandpaper-gate and Renshaw was signed as his replacement just days before the season on the strength of his availability as much as anything. He is expected to be available until the end of June and then return in mid-August.The early signs suggest it will be a happy union. Here, on a surface on which only one of his team-mates could make more than 10, Renshaw made a century on first-class debut for the club. He was just the 14th man to do so in Somerset’s history and the first since Alviro Petersen in 2013.It was not an especially pretty innings – he was beaten often in the early stages and showed a propensity for the leg side – but his was the standout contribution on a day on which 18 wickets fell. Without Renshaw, Somerset would not only have failed to register a batting bonus point, they may well have failed to set a competitive total. With the ball moving in the air and off a green pitch, batting was never straightforward and Renshaw was made to battle hard for much of his innings. His was a chanceless century, though. While he twice hit the ball in the air close to a short mid-on placed for the stroke, he did so with such power that the fielder had little chance. He flicked one six off his hips off Ed Barnard and brought up his century with a thundering drive over mid-off when facing the only over of spin delivered during the day.”Any ball could have your name on,” he said afterwards. “I got a bit lucky that none took the edge or the glove but I kept getting hit on the inner thigh. I just played to play as late and as straight as possible and, with the sun out, it started to remind me of home.”It will not have gone unnoticed from some Somerset supporters that, if the same number of wickets had fallen in a day to spin bowling, their pitches would have come under scrutiny once again. Yet it is accepted, certainly at this time of year, that conditions will assist seamers. And here, it was typically English seamers – good, probing pros who put the ball in good areas and nibble it around – who held sway: Barnard, who claimed the first five-wicket haul of his first-class career, and Lewis Gregory, who claimed three wickets in his first spell, the stand out performers. Both harnessed the conditions beautifully. You wonder, though, whether the ECB might not have been wise to encourage Somerset to maintain their policy of preparing spin-friendly surfaces (as much as is possible after a damp pre-season) with a view to the tours of Sri Lanka and the Caribbean that loom for England next winter. But it wasn’t just typically English seamers who dominated here; it was typically Australian batsmen. After Renshaw held the Somerset innings together, Travis Head did the same for Worcestershire until bottom-edging an attempted pull on to his stumps.Ed Barnard cut through Somerset’s middle order•Getty Images

Both are fine players who will hope to return to the UK next year as part of the Ashes or World Cup squads respectively. Certainly Renshaw’s innings won’t have gone unnoticed in Australia. But it was just a bit depressing that they managed to handle the conditions so much more comfortably – or with so much more determination – than the English players on display. Joe Clarke and Tom Abell, for example, played across straight ones, Steve Davies wafted at a wide one and, while several batsmen were victims of fine deliveries, it was hard to avoid the sense most could learn from the Australian duo.It was depressing, too, to learn that Jamie Overton was injured. As a bowler capable of generating sharp pace, Overton had an opportunity over the next month or so to impress the new England selection team and, perhaps, force his way into their plans. Instead he departed for a scan on his side. While the club are hopeful it is nothing more than a rib injury, there is a possibility it could be a side strain. If that is so, he will be out of action for several weeks. It seems he would not have played anyway. Feeling his way back having remodelled his action in order to prevent further injuries, he is said to be a little down on pace and confidence. And on these surfaces, his qualities – qualities that could prove so useful on international surfaces – are somewhat redundant. It was, though, far from a depressing day. A cloudless sky and the return of cricket enticed well over 2,000 spectators into the ground (one of which was Worcestershire’s former director of cricket, Steve Rhodes) with an overriding sense that they didn’t require gimmicks to attract them. Almost 10,000 people attended the first day of the four Division One matches. There was entertainment, too. James Hildreth, the one England-qualified batsman to reach 30 on the day, struck two sixes – one a flick off middle and leg that would have made Viv Richards proud and the other an upper cut – in between being dropped twice by the usually faultless Ben Cox. While the second was a tough, diving chance, the first was a surprise: Cox appeared to lose sight of the skied ball in the sun and failed to lay a glove on it.Then there was Barnard. Worcestershire have long thought of him as their version of Chris Woakes and it is not hard to see why. With the ball he is a bit sharper than expected – he credits technical work for providing another yard over the last 12-months or so – and maintains a wonderfully accurate line and length. With the bat he is calm and elegant and has ensured Worcestershire stayed in this game after they sunk to 48 for five and 124 for eight. He retains realistic hopes of batting in the top six one day.He may have plenty more work ahead of him in this match. Steve Magoffin reported a tight hamstring during the day, though Worcestershire are confident he will be fine, and the pitch is expected to flatten out in the sun.

Chris Woakes out of Scotland ODI, waits on Australia series

Tightness in right quad forces allrounder out; Tom Curran brought into England squad as replacement

George Dobell04-Jun-2018England allrounder Chris Woakes has been ruled out of the Scotland ODI with tightness in his right quad. Surrey’s Tom Curran comes into the squad in his place.Woakes, who left the field towards the end of Pakistan’s second innings at Headingley, will be assessed during the week to judge whether he will be fit for the start of the series against Australia on the June 13.Woakes was recalled to the Test side in Leeds having been left out of the opening Test at Lord’s when England preferred Mark Wood. He claimed 3 for 55 in the first innings and then removed Sarfraz Ahmed in the second before reporting discomfort.Tom Curran, whose brother Sam made his Test debut at Headingley, was already part of the squad for the Australia series. Woakes is the second player to be withdrawn from the Scotland match after Ben Stokes picked up a hamstring strain. Stokes will also be reassessed later in the week in order to ascertain when he may be fit to return. The England management have already confirmed he will miss the first part of the Australia series.Royal London Cup qualification

The two group winners will immediately qualify for a home draw in semi-finals. The team finishing second in each group will receive a home draw in the play-offs and play against the team finishing third in the opposite group. The play-off winners will play away in the semi-finals. Semi-final ties will be determined by a free draw.

Meanwhile, Joe Root will be among the England players returning to county action later this week as attention turns to the shorterformats of the game. Root, England’s Test captain, is available for Yorkshire’s home game against Northamptonshire on Thursday; a match that could yet decide which teams qualify for the knock-out stages.Other players from England’s Test squad available for Royal London Cup fixtures this week are Dom Bess (Somerset), Mark Wood (Durham), Keaton Jennings (Lancashire), Dawid Malan (Middlesex) and Sam Curran (Surrey). Malan has also been made available to play for Middlesex in their County Championship match against Leicestershire starting on June 20.Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler have been rested ahead of the ODIs, while England are yet to make a decision on the county availability of James Anderson and Stuart Broad ahead of the start of the Test series against India in August. They have, however, confirmed that neither will be available for the next round of County Championship matches which starts on Saturday. But Alastair Cook is available for Essex’s Championship game against Lancashire and Moeen Ali will play for Worcestershire’s final Royal London game before joining up with England’s limited-overs squad.
