Clement could land Goldson 2.0 with Rangers swoop for defensive "monster"

Glasgow Rangers will curse the timing of the recent international break as the Ibrox side look rejuvenated under new manager Philippe Clement.

Under the Belgian – who replaced Michael Beale last month – the Gers have won five of their six matches, while conceding only three goals, and not only has he got the club brimming with confidence, but he has established a clear playing style.

This has all come using the same players that Beale had access to, and it suggests the previous regime was clearly missing something.

Clement has inherited Beale’s summer signings and while several have underperformed – most notably Sam Lammers and Cyriel Dessers – the likes of Jack Butland and Danilo have impressed at opposite ends of the pitch.

Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland

With this foundation, the 49-year-old could build his squad around these two summer arrivals and with the January transfer window approaching, could he be tempted to delve into the market for a player or two.

He will have his own targets, of course, and plenty of ideas on how to vastly improve the squad. The key question is, will the finances be there to adequately meet his ambitions?

With this in mind, it looks as though the Light Blues are showing an interest in a Premier League defender who is struggling for game time in his current team…

Rangers transfer news – Ben Godfrey

According to 90min, the Glasgow side have reportedly shown their interest in Everton centre-back Ben Godfrey just weeks until the transfer window opens.

The Toffees are open to selling the player they purchased for a fee in the region of £20m just over three years ago, especially considering he has featured just once this season in the league.

Fellow Premier League clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are also interested in the defender, however, and these two sides indicate the Gers have some stiff competition on their hands.

Throw in the likes of Burnley, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth, and it’s clear that if Clement really wanted the Everton player, he is going to have to make an impressive pitch.

He does have 18 months left on his current contract and this could potentially knock down the asking price, but it remains to be seen just how low Everton will drop with regard to a price tag.

If Clement does somehow manage to pull off this signing, it could be reminiscent of the Gers swoop for Connor Goldson back in 2018 and Godfrey could be just like the current Rangers defender.

Connor Goldson’s Rangers statistics

The former Brighton and Hove Albion defender joined Steven Gerrard’s revolution just over five years ago and hasn’t looked back since.

He has become a mainstay in the heart of the Ibrox defence, missing a total of just 17 matches through injury during his half a decade in Glasgow, and has gone on to win a Premiership title along with the Scottish Cup, while making 283 appearances in the process.

His highlight was featuring in all 38 matches during the title-winning 2020/21 season, where he won 71% of his total duels and was dribbled past just 0.2 times per game, demonstrating how impressive he was physically and proving to be one of the best defenders in the country.

Injury disrupted his 2022/23 season, but he has roared back during the current campaign and not only can be imposing at the heart of the defence, but the fact he ranks second across the squad for accurate passes per game suggests the Englishman is able to pass his way out of danger and begin attacks from the back.

Godfrey has shown similar characteristics in the past and this could give him the chance to turn into another Goldson for Rangers.

How Ben Godfrey and Connor Goldson compare

The 25-year-old helped Norwich City win the Championship title in 2019 where he won 57% of his total duels and was dribbled past only 0.3 times per game, showcasing a maturity far beyond his years as he gained promotion to the Premier League.

He significantly impressed during his first season in the top flight to secure a move to Everton and in his maiden campaign for the Merseyside outfit, Godfrey won 64% of his ground duels and he also ranked in the top ten in the squad for accurate passes, tackles and interceptions per game, demonstrating that he could become a regular fixture in the first team over the coming years.

His early form at the Toffees led journalist James Whaling to brand him a “monster” and the £20m fee was beginning to look like an incredible bargain.

His appearances started to dwindle, however, as following 36 games played during his first season, this number subsequently dropped to 27 during his second year to just 15 last term and under Sean Dyche, he has slipped way down the pecking order.

Goldson found himself in a similar position during his last two years at Brighton, featuring just 18 times across all competitions, and the move to Rangers certainly revitalised him while giving him the platform to challenge for trophies and feature on the European stage.

Perhaps a fresh start north of the border is exactly what Godfrey needs in order to give his career a jolt. What better club to join than Rangers?

If he keeps fit, there is no doubting his talents and he could even form a solid defensive duo alongside Goldson, improving the Gers backline in the process.

The next few weeks could be crucial with regard to making inroads into signing the defender and with the likes of Spurs and the Magpies interested, Clement may need to act swiftly.

Ben Godfrey

He is too talented to be languishing on the bench for Everton, and he could well take notice of his former teammate, Todd Cantwell, and his career trajectory.

Once a starlet in East Anglia, he went through some rough times at the club before he joined Rangers. He now looks like a different player and one who could finally return to the form that saw him shine brightly in the Premier League, albeit rather briefly.

Godfrey has the attributes to play at the highest level, but will Rangers be the lucky side who manage to snatch him up? Only time will tell.

Faf du Plessis expects Australia to be 'nice and hostile'

Australia received a hostile reception from South Africa’s supporters earlier this year and du Plessis is relishing the prospect of a backlash from fans and the media in Australia

Brace yourselves. South Africa are on their way Down Under for their first games against Australia since the epoch-ending ball-tampering scandal earlier this year.Australia received a hostile reception from South Africa’s supporters during a bad-tempered tour leading up to the Newlands incident that resulted in bans for Steven Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft, and South African captain Faf du Plessis is relishing the backlash he expects to receive from fans and the media in Australia.”Australia is our favourite team to play against, all the stuff that comes with playing them, on and off the field, I love that and I feel that brings the best out of us as a team and even us as South Africans, we love that fiery competition,” du Plessis said on the day of South Africa’s departure for a limited-overs tour that includes three ODIs and a T20I.”It will be nice and hostile. The last two tours home and away, it’s certainly been very entertaining off the field. We are not expecting anything less. Zunaid our security officer has been working hard in the gym, he’s prepared for whatever lies ahead,” du Plessis said, possibly only half-joking. “It is a bit of a poker game as well. We expect them to try and unsettle us as a team when it comes to the media space, obviously with myself being at the forefront of it, but we see it as part and parcel of touring Australia.”It’s definitely not an easy place to travel. The crowds do play their part, they’re like a 12th man. Your mental capabilities and strength is just as important as your skill. For a lot of the new guys it will be the first time where they field on the boundary and they hear just how good they are as human beings.”That will be a new thing for them. You don’t get much of that anywhere else in the world anymore, it is the one place where you still feel like the crowd gets on top and really behind the home team. The fact that du Plessis has himself twice been found guilty of ball-tampering in the past won’t escape the attention of the media, and he suggested that the entire squad would be under increased scrutiny. “I do think this time round there may be one or two more traps for the players to try and stay away from,” he said. “But at the end of the day we want to go there and play a brand of winning cricket.”Injuries have presented a further challenge, stripping South Africa’s squad of batting experience and stalling the next stage of Vision 2019 – their blueprint for the World Cup. Du Plessis had wanted to be more settled on his World Cup probables by the time the team left for Australia, but injuries to Hashim Amla, JP Duminy and Wiaan Mulder have necessitated further tinkering.”We were looking to fine-tune our balance a little bit more in this series, but then the JP injury is a big one for us, because he is a two-in-one player and we don’t have a lot of them,”du Plessis said . “So now you’re almost looking at two players instead of one in his place, so there are a few more new faces than anticipated for this series.”Mulder and Duminy have both recently had surgery, Mulder on his ankle and Duminy on his shoulder, and both are expected to be out of action for at least three months. Amla’s recovery has taken longer than expected, and the finger tendon injury he picked up during the Caribbean Premier League has affected his ability to grip the bat handle.Team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee confirmed, however, that Amla is still expected to be fit to play as Durban Heat’s marquee Protea player in the Mzansi Super League in November. “Hashim picked up a finger tendon injury, which you need to treat very delicately,” Moosajee said . “He’s doing well, he’s in a brace at the moment. We’re hoping that with another three weeks of rest he should be fit to play in the T20 league.”At the other end of the spectrum, South Africa are also welcoming one player back from injury. Allrounder Chris Morris last played international cricket against India in February before injuring his back during the IPL. He has since returned to form and fitness in South African domestic cricket, and du Plessis looked forward to the “X-factor” that a fit and confident Morris might bring to his team.”He’s got so much X-factor as a white-ball cricketer, and this is an important tour for him to make sure he starts getting it right in terms of consistency,” du Plessis said of Morris. “We know on his day he’s as good as any player in the world. Something that’s always been important for him is that a confident Morris is a very good cricketer, and he’ll have some confidence from his [domestic] performances. Fitness wise, I hear he’s been working really hard.”

“Outstanding” West Brom player now returns to training at The Hawthorns

West Bromwich Albion have been handed a boost after learning that one of their first-team players has returned to training, according to a fresh report that has emerged.

West Brom injury news

The Baggies haven't had the best luck when it comes to players being sidelined this season, but supporters have recently received some positive news surrounding the fitness of four of their senior squad members who have been out of action. Josh Maja, John Swift, Daryl Dike and Adam Reach have all returned to the grass during the international break as they step up their recovery and get closer to once again being competitively involved, and if the following update is to be believed, they aren’t the only ones who will soon stage their comeback.

Back in January, Martin Kelly sustained a serious knee injury and he’s been ruled out ever since having undergone surgery to rectify his problem, meaning that he’s hardly had a chance to prove what he’s capable of since putting pen to paper.

The Hawthorns right-back has only made seven senior appearances following his arrival from Crystal Palace last summer (Transfermarkt – Kelly statistics), though when he’s ready to return to action, the 33-year-old will be hoping that he can nail down a regular starting place and make a positive impression on Carlos Corberan.

Martin Kelly returns to full training

According to BirminghamLive, Kelly has returned to training and could be available for the first team in a few weeks time, with the plan being to build up his fitness by giving him game time with West Brom’s youth side.

The lesser spotted Martin Kelly was welcomed back into first-team training this week by his teammates, who have long awaited his return. Still with some weeks to go, and likely under 21s minutes, before he might be considered for a place in the match-day squad, it's a significant step forward for Kelly.”

West Bromwich Albion defender Martin Kelly.

Corberan handed boost over "outstanding" Kelly

Whilst Kelly hasn’t been able to showcase his talents since joining, West Brom will know that they still have a fantastic player on their hands, so it will be a huge boost for Corberan to finally have the defender at his disposal having been ruled out since the start of the year.

Standing at 6 foot 3, the colossus was averaging 3.4 aerial wins and 2.6 clearances per game last season in the Championship for the Baggies (WhoScored – Kelly statistics), highlighting the rock he can be at the heart of the backline, but he’s also capable of getting involved in the final third.

The Whiston-born talent has posted 12 contributions (eight assists and four goals) since the start of his career, which shows that he can use his athletic pace to burst down the flank, take on his marker and create chances for both himself and his fellow teammates in the opposition’s half.

West Brom’s “outstanding” player, as hailed by Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman, even has the versatility to operate everywhere across the backline and slightly higher up on the right side of the midfield, so for all of the qualities that he brings to the squad, the sooner he returns, the better.

Mitchell Marsh omission leaves Australia's quicks facing hefty workload

The allrounder has been sent back to Shield cricket to find some form with Tim Paine expecting him to be needed later in the series

Australia’s attempt to emulate their Ashes bowling formula from last summer, combined with question marks over a batting line-up shorn of Steven Smith and David Warner, has forced the omission of the vice-captain Mitchell Marsh from the team to face India in the first Test of the summer at a draining Adelaide Oval.Twelve months ago the selectors chose Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon as their sole four bowlers for the opening two Tests against England, before Marsh was called in as a reinforcement from the time of the third match onwards. The change in team balance was vindicated by the way the front-liners dominated Joe Root’s team, and a year on the captain Tim Paine and coach Justin Langer have sought to repeat the dose against Virat Kohli’s tourists. There are two key differences, of course: India’s batsmen are far better versed in facing spin and will be capable of attacking Lyon to bring the pacemen back more quickly, while an Australian batting line-up without Smith and Warner will need contributions from as many players as possible. This has meant a recall for Peter Handscomb in the middle order, handing Victoria three spots in the same Australian batting line-up for the first time since Bill Lawry, Ian Redpath and Keith Stackpole in the 1970-71 Ashes.”Mitch Marsh probably hasn’t been as consistent as he would like and we would like,” Paine said, confirming that Marsh would be a likely inclusion later on in the Test summer. “We know the talent Mitch has. We know most likely at some stage in this series we’ll need him, so we’re taking the opportunity at the moment to send him back to play a Shield game, get more cricket under his belt, knowing at some stage we’re probably going to need him.”We know he is good enough to be a genuine allrounder at Test level, he probably just hasn’t put it together consistently enough. There’s the opportunity for him to go back and get a Shield game under his belt before the BBL start. Going forward we’ve got full faith in him being a Test allrounder and as this series wears on and we get to places where the wicket might be a bit flatter, conditions might be a little warmer and our bowlers a bit tired then the allrounder position becomes important.”Apart from anything else, the decision to drop a recently appointed vice-captain underlined how slim Australia’s leadership resources currently are. Without Marsh in the team, captaincy duties would be most likely to fall to the limited-overs captain Aaron Finch or one of the state captains Usman Khawaja (Queensland) or Travis Head (South Australia) in the event of Paine suffering an injury.Either way, Paine acknowledged that arguably the key “chess match” of the series when Australia were in the field would involve India’s efforts to attack Lyon in order to force him to bring his fast men back earlier than intended. “I’m sure there will be opportunities at times when we can hopefully put their spinners under pressure and try and put some big overs into their fast bowlers,” Paine said. “It is going to be no different for them; they are going to see at times if they can attack Nathan and get on top of him and we’re going to have bowl our quicks a bit more than we would like so it is going to be a real chess match in that regard.”The [Adelaide] wicket over the last few years here has given enough throughout the game [to not need an allrounder]. We’ve obviously got a lot of confidence in Nathan Lyon bowling a lot of overs if we need to. And probably the fact all our three quicks go in really fresh, so we’ve got confidence in them – particularly at the start of the series. It’s probably unlikely that we’ll use the three quicks as much as we will in this game, throughout the whole series as it wears on – but this being the first Test we think they’ll do the job.”Paine was dismissive of questions over whether Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins would be capable of standing up to the workload, given their micro-managed preparation for this assignment. “They got through the Ashes last year I thought and bowled a hell of a lot of overs,” he said. “So, they are fresh and ready to go. They have had a great preparation and are ready to go. They are fine to go. They will be bowling big overs if need be, and they are totally comfortable with that.”The quicks are going to have to bowl a bit more and we have full faith that Nathan Lyon can do the job in any conditions, he’s shown that over the last few years, he bowled a mountain of overs in the UAE and our quicks are fresh so we can cover that, Travis Head bowls some handy offspinners so we have options there but we’ll be backing our bowlers.”As for the debutant Marcus Harris, Paine saw the maturing of a talented shotmaker into the sort of rounded batsman who will be able to help guide Finch and the No. 3 Khawaja through the testing early periods of each innings, before hard pitches and Kookaburra balls allow batting to become significantly less testing. “He’s been a really consistent player for Victoria for three years and thoroughly deserves the opportunity,” Paine said.”He’s always been a really talented batsman but I think in the last three years we’ve seen him mature into a top line opening batter. He’s an aggressive little player, he’ll play his shots. But he has also really improved his defence and has come a long way as a batsman. We’re really excited as we think he has the game for Test level and we can’t wait to see him get out there tomorrow.”

West Brom flop who left on a free in 2021 now outperforming Diangana

West Brom conceded in the final dying moments at the Hawthorns last match to lose to Leicester City 2-1, exposed on the break after overcommitting numbers with Harry Winks sliding in to convert a crucial winner for Enzo Maresca's Foxes.

Carlos Corberan will hope that his Baggies side won't be too disheartened by the nature of narrow defeat, that loss was only West Brom's second loss from their last five Championship matches with wins coming in the other contests.

Grady Diangana continues to underperform for the West Midlands side which will be a worry for Corberan, the exciting Congolese forward coming away from the Leicester match with a dire overall 6.2 Sofascore rating.

It was a lacklustre 75-minute display from the Baggies number 11 – only mustering up one shot all game which was blocked – with his first team future in jeopardy if he continues to underwhelm.

On the contrary, former West Brom dud Kamil Grosicki – who can usually operate on the opposite flank to where Diangana regularly features for his team – is now outperforming the misfiring 25-year-old with his new employers back in his native Poland.

How much West Brom signed Kamil Grosicki for

West Brom must have thought they'd struck gold when they signed a then in-form Grosicki for a reported fee of £800k with add ons, poaching the winger from Hull City.

Grosicki had been a consistent bright spark for the Tigers amidst turmoil off the field alongside Jarrod Bowen, the popular Polish attacker breaking Hull hearts when he moved on – scoring 26 goals and assisting a further 27 over four seasons at the MKM Stadium.

The move to West Brom just didn't work out for Grosicki however, leaving the Hawthorns on a free transfer after a torrid short stay at the club.

Kamil Grosicki's statistics at West Brom

Grosicki would only manage to score one goal for the Baggies from 19 appearances, the attacking midfielder never acclimatising to his new surroundings in the west Midlands fully.

It led to Grosicki having a frosty relationship with then West Brom boss Sam Allardyce, the one-time Bolton Wanderers boss turned Baggies short-term appointment calling the former Tigers man out for rejecting a move away from the club that could have been a lifeline.

Allardyce was rather blunt when questioned about Grosicki's lack of opportunities at the Hawthorns in the first team: "He could've gone to Nottingham Forest, but he refused."

Instead, Grosicki would have to pick up the pieces of his disintegrating football career back in his native Poland when he was released by the Baggies in 2021 with the 35-year-old now having the last laugh.

Grosicki would rejoin Pogoń Szczecin, the club that started the Polish winger's footballing journey in 2006 that saw him play in the EFL and beyond.

Kamil Grosicki's statistics since leaving West Brom

The 35-year-old, who now wears the captain's armband for his hometown club, has been the standout performer this season for Pogoń Szczecin.

Scoring 13 times in total during his first full season back on home soil, the experienced attacker has eight goals and nine assists in all competitions so far this campaign.

Three of those goal contributions even came in Europa Conference qualifying for Pogoń Szczecin, helping his team beat Northern Irish opposition Linfield 5-2 away at Windsor Park.

In contrast, Diangana for the Baggies only has three goals and three assists in Championship action this season.

Grosicki will continue firing in goals and providing teammates with assists out in Poland to end his career with a bang, whilst Diangana back at the Hawthorns needs to pick up form quickly or face the axe by an impatient Corberan.
