Siddle admits lack of cricket has been tough

His appearance for Adelaide Strikers in their heavy defeat against Sydney Sixers was just his seventh outing since the end of the November

Being part of Australia’s Test squad this season has been a double-edged sword for Peter Siddle, putting him closer to adding to his 64 caps but also limiting his time actually playing.Siddle’s appearance for Adelaide Strikers in their heavy defeat against Sydney Sixers at the SCG was just his seventh outing since the end of the November – four have come in the Big Bash and three in the ODI series against India as he ended an eight-year absence from the Australia one-day side.Siddle was not lamenting being around the international set-up again, but he admitted it was a challenge remaining in rhythm while flying back and forth for the occasional BBL appearance. He will link back up with the Test squad in Canberra on Wednesday morning and is likely to miss the Strikers’ next match as it is the day before the second Test. Then if, as expected, he isn’t required he will aim to play the final two group matches although the Strikers have all-but seen their title defence come to an end with the defeat in Sydney.”It’s been good to be around the Australian set-up, but think I’ve played my seventh game in white-ball in two months so there’s not a lot of cricket being played,” he said. “It has been hard to fly in and play games, that’s no excuse but not the greatest preparation over the last few weeks.”I’m feeling good, bowling plenty with the red ball just not in games at the moment. It’s feeling good if I get the opportunity in Canberra but it’s probably going to be the same XI so I’ll probably miss out.”Despite being around the Test squad all season, Siddle was leapfrogged by Jhye Richardson for a place in Brisbane after Josh Hazlewood was ruled out. Richardson impressed with five wickets on debut to put himself in prime position for an Ashes berth, but despite his lack of recent cricket Siddle is not concerned about it impacting his chances of going to England.”It was disappointing to miss out last week, but I’m doing all I can,” he said. “It’s not too bad, there’s still four Shield games to go then I go over and play county cricket for two or three months before the Ashes anyway. Think my record over there speaks for itself, I’m not too worried about preparation for that.”It’s just tough at the moment trying to get some game time, flying in and out, specifically for the Strikers the games haven’t lined up well with the Tests so that’s been the hardest part so it has been tough. It is always nice to come back and play these games, get a little bit of cricket under my belt.”Though Siddle talked about a two or three month pre-Ashes spell with Essex that would be significantly reduced if he were part of the World Cup squad. Australia’s final 15, which has to be named by April 23, will have a training camp in Brisbane during early May before heading to the UK for the tournament which runs until mid-July.An in-house warm-up match involving Australia A in late July will be the main Ashes preparation. Those not involved in the World Cup, and on the fringes of the Test squad, will have two other four-day matches as part of the Australia A tour. Justin Langer said they were likely to leave naming the Ashes squad until quite late to assess form in those A-team games.

After criticism by then Ireland coach Phil Simmons, more rest days have been factored in with each successive tournament. The 2019 edition will have 14 teams competing, with each team expected to play six round-robin matches over the first two weeks before the playoff rounds. It will also mark the first time that Full Member nations will be a part of the qualifier. Zimbabwe and Ireland were the lowest ranked Full Members on the ICC’s T20I rankings table at the December 31, 2018 cutoff date. They will be joined by four other teams who played in the opening round of the last T20 World Cup in India – Scotland, Netherlands, Oman and Hong Kong – as well as eight other teams who advance from regional qualifiers taking place between March and August. The women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier will be held in Scotland from August 31 to September 7 this year. However, the ICC has stated its intention to form the tournament during the current commercial cycle, which would mean before 2023.The Women’s Cricket Committee, chaired by Connor, will have 11 members in all. They will be tasked with driving female participation growth, female fan growth and promoting leadership opportunities for female administrators, as well as creating competition pathways for women.

Arteta can repeat Arsenal’s Rice masterclass with £90m January deal

Arsenal begin their hunt for a record-extending 15th FA Cup victory as they prepare to face Liverpool this evening.

Mikel Arteta won't be resting on his laurels as he aims to secure his second trophy as manager of the club – four years after winning the same competition against Chelsea.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

Over the previous few weeks, however, the Gunners have suffered two defeats in the Premier League, and they have only won one fixture since a 4-3 victory over Luton Town at the start of December.

This signifies that despite the club sitting fourth in the table and just five points behind the Anfield side, Arteta needs to bolster his squad in the January transfer window.

small

They have naturally been linked with a few names so far, yet it is a potential swoop for a current Premier League midfielder which could be one of his most important moves.

Arsenal transfer news – Amadou Onana

It is no secret that Arteta is after some midfield reinforcements – either this month or in the summer – and according to a report from TEAMtalk earlier this week, Arsenal have shown interest in Everton gem Amadou Onana ahead of making a swoop for the player.

Indeed, the report indicates that the Gunners have in fact made an approach for the Belgian as they look to add some more talent into their midfield area.

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

The club have been linked with a move for Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz in recent months following his impressive start to the season for the Midlands outfit, scoring seven times as Unai Emery’s side have lit up the top flight.

It appears as though Arteta is looking to move on to other targets, with Onana now being targeted.

Any prospective move could come at a huge cost, however, as the Goodison Park outfit are reportedly valuing the midfielder between £70m-£90m and this could prove to be a big stumbling block for Arsenal.

During the summer, the Spaniard splashed out a club record £105m transfer fee to lure Declan Rice from West Ham United and despite the lavish sum, he is certainly shown his worth.

This suggests that a move for Onana could perhaps allow Arteta to replicate his Rice masterclass and sign another midfielder from a fellow Premier League side and give them a platform to continue their development.

Declan Rice’s Arsenal statistics

The Englishman swiftly emerged as one of the most gifted midfielders in the country during his spell at West Ham, progressing from the academy to club captain within just a few years.

He eventually made 245 appearances for the Irons since making his debut during the 2016/17 campaign, and he departed as a hero, leading the club to their first major trophy since the 1980 FA Cup by winning the Europa Conference League in June 2023.

He had been admired by a host of clubs, yet it was a move across London to Arsenal which was the logical option, and he hasn’t disappointed during his first six months at the Emirates.

Indeed, the midfielder currently ranks second among the squad for accurate passes per game in the top flight (62.8) along with ranking second for tackles (2.1) and first for interceptions (1.5), indicating that he has been a positive influence in the Arsenal side, especially from a defensive viewpoint.

The 24-year-old can also contribute in an attacking sense too, as he has scored some vital goals this season.

His first goal for the Gunners came against Manchester United in a thrilling 3-1 victory in September, while the former West Ham starlet netted a wonderful last-minute header against Luton to claim all three points, and he has adapted well to Arteta’s methods and demands.

Onana is in a similar mould to the Arsenal midfielder and there is no doubt he could settle in well at the club should he make a move to the Gunners in the near future.

Amadou Onana’s season in numbers

Frank Lampard may have struggled in his role as Everton manager, but his signing of Onana was among one of his finest pieces of transfer business.

The 22-year-old cost the club £33m from French side Lille in August 2022 and he enjoyed a decent first season for the Toffees, making 35 appearances across all competitions and scoring once.

This has given him a platform to become one of Everton’s best performers this season under Sean Dyche.

His displays this term have seen him garner praise from a wide range of sources. Under 23 scout Antonio Mango was one such admirer, saying: “He’s such a physical specimen, he has all attributes to become a real Midfield Powerhouse.”

Talent scout Jacek Kulig went even further in his praise for the talented Belgian, claiming he was a “complete package” following another excellent performance for the Toffees last month.

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

Across the whole Everton squad in the top flight this season, Onana ranks first for accurate passes per game (32.7) while also ranking third for big chances created (four) and third for tackles per game (2.6) which demonstrates how effective he is in various performance metrics.

He is without doubt, one of Dyche’s most important players this season, and he could thrive at the heart of the Arsenal midfield, enabling the likes of Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz to utilise their attacking abilities.

The Belgian’s defensive acumen sees him rank in the top 5% in Europe’s big five leagues for aerial duels won per 90 (2.47) along with ranking in the top 25% for tackles won per 90 (2.47) and if there is one player Arteta should target this month, it must be Onana.

Amadou Onana

Much will depend on how much the Spaniard has to spend in the current transfer window, and he may have to move on some deadwood in order to raise the required funds to sign the Everton gem.

Rice has proved that £105m can go a long way and with the Toffees wanting around £90m for their star man, Arteta could repeat his stroke of genius by luring Onana to the Emirates in the summer.

James Pattinson may bat No. 7 for Victoria in Sheffield Shield final

With Nic Maddinson ruled out with a fractured thumb, Victoria may ponder promoting Pattinson up the order although recalling Cameron White is also an option

James Pattinson may get the chance to showcase his all-round skills at No. 7 as Victoria ponder five bowlers for the Sheffield Shield final against New South Wales, on what looks likely to be a docile Junction Oval pitch for the competition decider, starting Thursday.A fractured thumb, requiring surgery, has ruled out Nic Maddinson, leaving the hosts with the option of recalling the vastly experienced Cameron White or promoting Pattinson and playing him alongside Peter Siddle, Chris Tremain, Scott Boland and the spinner Jon Holland. Pattinson had batted at No. 6 in Victoria’s final regular-season game against South Australia after Maddinson’s injury.Changed competition rules for the final, where the team gaining the most first-innings bonus points is declared the winner in the event of a draw, places more emphasis on the need for Victoria to have an edge to their bowling attack, rather than simply playing out the full five days and collecting the trophy, as has happened at times in the past. Pattinson, who, in the eyes of many is pressing for a berth on the Ashes tour this year after litany of injuries, expected an unsympathetic surface for bowlers at Victoria’s headquarters.”It has been [batsman friendly] at the Junction,. We played the first two games there after the Big Bash [League] and there were some pretty high scores, so it’ll be interesting too with the game going five days instead of four,” Pattinson told . “So an extra day there for a result and they’ve changed the rules with the points if it’s a draw, whoever gets the most points in the first innings will win the final. That’ll change tactics a little bit as well. The wicket has been pretty flat there, so it’ll be interesting to see how they go about it with the rule changes and the points system.”The Dukes ball will be another character in the drama, offering more consistent movement through the air than its Kookaburra equivalent, and also posing challenges for bowlers commonly used to hitting the seam rather than bending the ball before it pitches. “I was saying to a few of the bowlers sometimes it’s harder work [with the Dukes] than the Kookaburra because you have to get it exactly right for it to swing,” Pattinson said.”Some balls – if you’re a bit off – it swings own the leg side, so the thing with the Dukes, throughout the 80 overs it is a ball that offers you something. You might be 60 overs in and it is still swinging. As a batter, you’ve still got to concentrate, and as a bowler you’re still in the game, where sometimes when the wicket’s flatter, you’ve just got to contain for a while and try to contain the runs until the new ball comes.”With the Dukes I just feel like you’re in the game throughout the 80 overs, but it is difficult to bowl sometimes if it’s swinging too much and a few of the bowlers have said ‘how do we stop the ball from swinging too much because I can’t get it in the spot I want?’. So that’s a challenge it throws up, but all in all the bowlers do enjoy bowling with it. A lot of the bowlers enjoy the Kookaburra too; it’s just another challenge for the batters, so it’s good for cricket.”Since his return from a side strain that interrupted a longer-term rehabilitation from a major back surgery, Pattinson admitted there had been times when he wondered whether desperate measures to prolong his career would rob him of the high pace that characterised his most striking moments for Australia in his fleeting appearances since 2011.”When you go to a decision to have such a big surgery like I did with my back, it’s one of the things where you think, ‘will that hamper my pace.’ So that was the one thing where going into it I thought ‘am I going to lose some of my pace by doing this’ and is that a big risk,” he said. “For me to still have a bit of pace and to come through with rhythm and feel pretty natural – it’s a big tick and something that when you go in and have a big decision like that, you risk losing. But for me it’s great I’ve still got that and I’ve had a lot of help along the way.”When you first come back to playing cricket or any sport it’s just about finding that rhythm first and not trying too hard. I’ve found that quicker than I probably have in the past and that’s come from a bit of experience and coming back from injuries before. I’m just pleased with how fast I’ve found my rhythm now and I’m not searching too hard for it, which is good, so I’ve come in at the right time, the boys have done all the hard work getting there, so it’s good to be back playing.”I feel like I’m bowling with good pace and it feels pretty easy at the moment. Hopefully it can stay like that. We’ve got some tremendous bowlers in the team, I’d say we’ve probably got the best bowling line-up in Sheffield Shield cricket at the moment: Trem and Boland who’ve taken so many wickets this year and everyone knows what Sidds can do, so it’s pretty great to be able to bowl with blokes like that.”Victoria squad: Travis Dean (capt), Scott Boland, Andrew Fekete, Seb Gotch, Sam Harper, Marcus Harris, Jon Holland, James Pattinson, Will Pucovski, Matt Short, Peter Siddle, Chris Tremain, Cameron White, Eamonn VinesNew South Wales squad: Peter Nevill (capt), Sean Abbott, Nick Bertus, Harry Conway, Trent Copeland, Jack Edwards, Moises Henriques, Daniel Hughes, Nick Larkin, Steve O’Keefe, Kurtis Patterson, Jason Sangha, Greg West

Leeds to secure off-field deal with target set to join at end of January

Leeds United will be keen to make moves in the transfer market this window and now look set to wrap up an important piece of off-field business at Elland Road towards the end of the month.

Leeds United January rumours…

Following a period of keen anticipation, Leeds United alongside others are now well underway in the transfer window and they will be looking to conclude deals to finalise both incomings and outgoings in order to balance their squad depth.

Daniel Farke has indicated that he is happy with the options at his disposal, though he hasn't ruled out adding to his side over the next few weeks, as he stated in a recent press conference:

"I'm happy with our squad. I think we have a pretty balanced squad and in all areas. There's not one particular position where you think okay, there is definitely a need that you have to do something. But again, it's also I think, professional to stay awake and also to check if there are some options."

Hellas Verona defender Josh Doig and Bournemouth winger David Brooks were named as early targets for the Whites this month; however, it remains to be seen whether Farke will act to bring them in to try and aid his side's quest for promotion from the Championship.

In other news, Leeds United are also believed to be waiting in the wings for Bournemouth striker Kieffer Moore, though the Bournemouth man is also attracting interest from Birmingham City, West Bromwich Albion, Ipswich Town, Middlesbrough and Sunderland.

Despite all focus being on dealings in the transfer market, news has emerged detailing that the 49ers Enterprises appear to have made an off-field appointment at Elland Road.

Leeds United set to hire Jordan Miles

According to Football Scotland reporter Mark Hendry, Leeds United are set to hire Aberdeen recruitment chief Jordan Miles and plan to offer him a major role in their transfer negotiations this summer after initially targeting him last month. The 33-year-old only joined the Dons from West Ham United in the summer; however, he is now expected to depart the Granite City for a compensation fee to take up a position at Elland Road.

One key caveat to the deal is that he will remain in post at Aberdeen until the end of the month despite attempts from the Whites to bring him south of the border before the window's conclusion. Nevertheless, they will need to wait to get their man, who will be tasked in the immediate term with trying to seek additions to help his current employers rise up the Scottish Premiership table.

Recruitment has improved at Leeds United since Nick Hammond arrived last summer as interim football advisor and shrewd signings such as Joel Piroe, Sam Byram and Ethan Ampadu have gone on to make a marked impact at the club.

Now, the 49ers look to have landed a key appointment as they aim to restore Leeds United's status as a club capable of competing in the top bracket of English football.
