There’s no two ways about it: the 2023/24 campaign has been an extremely difficult season to be a Chelsea fan.
Without the distraction of European football, the development of an approach should be clear to see under Mauricio Pochettino by now, but unfortunately, that’s not been the case.
The Blues' 11th position in the Premier League highlights their struggle to perform, while their defeat to Liverpool in the EFL Cup final was the latest kick in the teeth.
However, there have been a handful of positives to take so far, with one new signing proving to be a bargain after his value soared to double the worth of Christopher Nkunku.
Christopher Nkunku’s estimated worth
Over the last two seasons, Nkunku has been one of the most in-form attackers in Europe for RB Leipzig, scoring 20 goals and providing 15 assists in the 2021/22 Bundesliga campaign, and scoring 16 times in 20 starts last season.
Therefore, it was no surprise to see Chelsea express their interest in the forward last summer, and they eventually got their man in a deal worth £52m.
However, Nkunku has been unable to match that unbelievable form in a Chelsea shirt this season, with the number 18 missing a huge 30 games already courtesy of various injuries.
This has inevitably seen the French ace’s value take a hit, with the 25-year-old now estimated to be worth £34m by CIES Football Observatory, which is half that of a certain Chelsea star.
Chelsea must rue selling a "leader" who's outscoring Gallagher this season
The talented international just couldn’t make it work in West London.
ByJack Salveson Holmes Mar 14, 2024 Nicolas Jackson’s value in 2024
Just like Nkunku, Nicolas Jackson was brought to the Premier League this summer in a complete attacking rebuild, joining from Villarreal for just £32m.
The “extraordinary” striker, as dubbed by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, instantly proved to be a threat in pre-season, notably scoring and picking up two assists in a 4-3 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion.
However, Jackson only scored once in his first eight Premier League games, missing three big chances on his debut against Liverpool.
But since then, the number 15 has been much improved, netting 12 times and picking up three assists in 31 starts across all competitions, becoming an attacker that the Argentine can rely on to perform.
His quick adaption to the Premier League has seen Jackson’s estimated value soar in less than a year, to the point where he is now one of Chelsea’s most valuable players.

As you can see, only Enzo Fernandez and Cole Palmer are worth more than the Senegal star, while also being worth double Knunku. At just 22 years of age, Jackson still has plenty of development and growth to go, with his potential being one reason why he’s valued so highly.
Furthermore, Pochettino will hope that his star striker can become the focal point of Chelsea for years to come and, in the short term, continue his excellent run of form that’s seen him score in his last three matches.

He cautioned that without experienced people, even the richest and most powerful cricket board could fall swiftly

Even as he waits for the Supreme Court to consider rolling back certain reforms, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has cautioned that without experienced people at the helm, even the richest and most powerful cricket board could fall swiftly.Ganguly said “continuity” was “a very important” yardstick in running a sport and so the BCCI had approached the court in a “common sense” move to consider six amendments that his administration wanted to make to the board’s constitution. One of these concerns the tenures of the BCCI office-bearers. The BCCI has recommended that the president and the secretary be allowed to stay in office for two consecutive terms (six years) irrespective of their past tenure. Except, as per the BCCI constitution, registered last August, an office-bearer who has held any post for two consecutive terms either at a state association or in the BCCI, or a combination of both, has to step away from cricket administration for a minimum of three years. During this period, they cannot serve in any capacity at either the BCCI or state level. If the court allows the BCCI appeal, then Ganguly along with board secretary Jay Shah and the other three office bearers (treasurer, joint secretary and vice-president) can continue in their posts till 2024. If the court disagrees, then Ganguly, who was elected as BCCI president on October 23, as well as Shah will have to step aside in August 2020.”That is what we have asked for in the court because both Jay and I have 10 months of term,” Ganguly said in a chat with on Friday. “Even Jayesh [George], who is the joint secretary, has 11 months. So we have requested on the basis of common sense that at the end of the day you need continuity to run the cricket board and we have just requested the Supreme Court. If they do it, fine, if they don’t do it, then the term is only for 10 months.”On July 18, 2016, the court, in a seminal order, had approved the RM Lodha Committee recommendations which formed the basis for the structural reforms in BCCI. The board and the state associations did not conform to most of them, even after the court relaxed its stance in August 2018.Eventually most of the state associations did fall in line, but questions are still being asked of the board and how it intends to implement all the reforms. Ganguly said the BCCI would take the opportunity at the next hearing on January 14 to explain that inexperience in administration is a factor that is preventing them from functioning as well as they could.”I’ve been in the BCCI working committee for five years now, representing the Cricket Association of Bengal, which has a permanent seat in the working committee. This time when I went to the AGM, there was not one single face who had been there in the last four-five years. Sometimes, you cannot just throw away experience.”It is required because you look at the earnings of the BCCI. They earn about INR 25,000 crores (approx. USD 3.51 billion) in five years. It is a phenomenal amount of revenue which comes in. The game has to be run, your representations with the world body have to be sorted, and to just expect newcomers to come and do it consistently over a period of time, I don’t think is a fair thing. Continuity is important.”Even in state associations when you go, to actually run state associations, the leadership is very, very important. And you have to find the right kind of people to run all these organisations because (there’s) too much at stake is involved in running of these organisations are concerned. And if you don’t get the right people, the entire system will come down.”Ganguly went to on to provide the examples of how struggling administrations in South Africa and West Indies had had a huge impact on their on-field performance. “You look at the other countries. South Africa. When I came into international cricket in 1996, they were probably the best side in the world. A team which had [Shaun] Pollock, [Allan] Donald, [Jacques] Kallis, [Lance] Klusener and you look at the current South African team.”You’ve been following the news for the last two days. They speak about how the relationship with the administration has fallen off, how the sponsors want to back away because cricket is not being run properly. Even somebody like Graeme Smith, who was probably one of their greatest players, doesn’t want to take up the job [as director of cricket] because he feels he won’t be allowed to have a free run.”Look at West Indies – the 1970s, the 1980s, what a force they were. And I feel one of the main reasons of cricket not doing well in those parts of the world is because of administrative failure. And you don’t want to do that in India because India is the powerhouse of cricket in the world, in terms of finances.”Look at our team. The best thing that has happened in the last three years is in spite of what has gone on in the courts, the team has performed fantastically. That’s where the real strength lies of Indian cricket. In any form of work, whether it’s business, running the state, running the country, running the board, you need good people to run it, experienced people to run it. Continuity is very important.”
Football goes beyond just being a sport to becoming a spectacle of human drama and emotion in the high-stakes arena of the UEFA European Championship, when nations clash and emotions erupt.
Over the years, there have been a number of contentious moments in football history. These incidents, which range from dodgy referee calls to controversial off-field decisions, have also generated discussions among players, spectators and officials.
And with technology now in play these days, there will surely be plenty more controversial moments to come.
With that being said, we have compiled a list of the top 10 most controversial moments in European Championship history…

ByLuke Randall Mar 14, 2024 10 Turkey v Croatia quarter-final Crazy extra-time period ends in drama (Euro 2008)
The Euro 2008 quarter-final match between Turkey and Croatia was headed for a Croatian win with a late goal in extra time, only for Turkey to score an even later equaliser, taking the match to penalties, where they won.
The controversy stemmed from the timing of Turkey’s goal, with debates over whether the referee should have ended the match before the equaliser was scored. This incident remains a point of debate regarding timekeeping and referee discretion in ending matches, which is something we have seen in the Premier League and other leagues as well.
(The drama kicks in at 10:21 here…)
9 Marko Arnautovic’s goal celebration North Macedonia incensed by Austrian's gesture (Euro 2020)
Marko Arnautovic appeared to disrespect opponents of Macedonian origin during his celebration following a goal against North Macedonia during Euro 2020.
Arnautovic received a one-match ban from UEFA as a result of the celebration, which some deemed unsportsmanlike and gave rise to accusations of racism. This served as a reminder of the organisation’s opposition to racism and discrimination.
8 Yugoslavia's disqualification Civil war and expulsion led to huge tournament shock (Euro 1992)
Following a strong qualifying campaign, Yugoslavia had earned a spot in the 1992 Euro, which was scheduled to take place in Sweden. With a wealth of talent that has made major contributions to European football, the team was regarded as one of the tournament favorites. But the growing violence inside its boundaries attracted international criticism, and the UN placed economic sanctions on Yugoslavia as a result.
Less than a month before the competition was scheduled to begin in May 1992, UEFA, the organisation that governed football in Europe, came under growing pressure to take action. In the face of mounting worries about the event’s safety and security as well as the political ramifications of Yugoslavia’s involvement, UEFA took the historic decision to banish the Yugoslav squad from contention.
The dismissal occurred as a direct result of international sanctions placed on the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia by UN Security Council Resolution 757. The decision made by UEFA was in line with the larger international campaign to isolate Yugoslavia due to the conflict and violations of human rights that were taking place on its soil.
Denmark, who had placed second in the same qualifying group, was invited to play in the tournament to take up the void left by Yugoslavia’s exclusion. This last-minute addition proved to be a Cinderella tale as Denmark went on to win the title, overcoming Germany in the final and the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.
7 Sol Campbell disallowed goal v Portugal Late header would've sent England to the semi-finals (Euro 2004)
England defender Sol Campbell headed what many English fans believed to be a worthy late winner in the quarter-final matchup against Portugal at Euro 2004. Nevertheless, the goal was disallowed by the referee, who penalised John Terry for supposedly fouling Portuguese goalkeeper Ricardo in the build-up.
It has been disputed whether the referee’s ruling was excessively harsh, which resulted in England’s elimination following a penalty shootout.
Sol Campbell has come out since, talking on the incident.
6 Mario Balotelli racist abuse v Croatia Striker's displays overshadowed by vile fan behaviour (Euro 2012)
During Euro 2012, Mario Balotelli was subjected to racist taunts, particularly during the group stage match between Croatia and Italy in Poland, in which Croatian fans were the suspects.
UEFA investigated the racial insults after taking the matter seriously. After the investigation, UEFA fined the Croatian Football Federation €80,000 (£62,800) for the fan behaviour, which included inappropriate and racist banners being displayed, pyrotechnics being set off and thrown, as well as racist chants directed at Balotelli.
5 Spain's 'offside' goal v Croatia Croatia fume as late winner allowed to stand (Euro 2012)
Another controversial moment in 2012 was the dispute that erupted during Croatia’s match against Spain, leaving players and spectators arguing over the nuances of football’s offside rule.
The dispute started in the 88th minute. After receiving a pass from Cesc Fabregas, Andres Iniesta appeared to be in an offside position, but he calmly squared to Jesus Navas, who hammered the ball into an empty net. The players from Croatia, together with their coach Slaven Bilić, quickly protested the goal, who maintained that when Fabregas made the pass, Iniesta was offside.
The decision was quite close, as evidenced by post-match replays and analysis. Some angles even suggested that Iniesta might have been level with the final defender at the time the ball was played. But as there was no VAR available at the time, the assistant referee’s on-field ruling stayed and there was no chance for a video review.

ByStephan Georgiou Mar 18, 2024 4 Booing of the Danish national anthem English fans make for hostile environment in tense semi (Euro 2020)
When England and Denmark played in the Euro 2020 semi-final at Wembley Stadium, English fans booed the Danish national anthem, which caused a lot of controversy and outrage.
This move was swiftly criticised heavily by spectators as well as by those within the stadium. The media and supporters condemned the conduct as “disgraceful” and “unsportsmanlike”, emphasising that it goes against the values of respect and worldwide unity as well as the spirit of the game.
One of the most talked-about moments from Euro 1988 was Ronald Koeman’s celebration following West Germany and the Netherlands’ semi-final match, which perfectly captured the fierce rivalry between the two countries.
The incident in question happened after the game when Germany’s Olaf Thon and Koeman were spotted switching shirts. Now, this doesn’t seem like anything crazy, but it was what came after that caused a rift. Television cameras captured Koeman acting as though he was wiping his behind right in front of the Dutch supporters, wearing the shirt that Thon had given him.
Outrage was instantly ignited by this move, which was seen as a deliberate act of disrespect towards the German team and its supporters.
2 Spain banned from playing against USSR Soviets given walkover after Spain forfeit quarter-final (Euro 1960)
One famous instance of politics having a direct impact on sports during the Cold War era is Spain’s withdrawal from the 1960 European Nations’ Cup – the first edition of the European Championship – after being pitted against the Soviet Union.
Spain were scheduled to meet the Soviet Union in the tournament’s quarter-finals but dictator Francisco Franco’s administration stopped the game from being played on Spanish territory. Strongly anti-communist, Franco’s government refused to acknowledge the Soviet Union.
The Spanish Football Federation was forced to exit the competition as a result of government intervention, allowing the Soviet Union to advance to the semi-finals. The USSR defeated Yugoslavia 2-1 in the tournament final in Paris to win the title.
1 Sweden v Denmark match-fixing allegations Convenient result angers Italy (Euro 2004)
Due to claims of match-fixing, the Euro 2004 Group C encounter between Sweden and Denmark caused a great deal of controversy. Italy was eliminated from the tournament with the final score of a 2-2 draw, which sparked rumours and claims that the two Scandinavian nations may have orchestrated the outcome.
Before the game, there was a lot of talk that, regardless of Italy’s performance against Bulgaria in their last group encounter, a 2-2 draw would guarantee that both Sweden and Denmark advanced to the quarter-finals at the expense of Italy. Suspicion and tensions increased during the game, particularly among Italian supporters and the media, as it progressed and reached the controversial 2-2 outcome.
Sweden equalised after Denmark took the lead twice, and the second Swedish goal came late in the game to seal the draw that would see both teams through.
Italian supporters and media expressed their displeasure, criticising the match’s integrity and claiming that the result was too opportune to be coincidental. However, players, referees, and coaching staff from both Sweden and Denmark angrily refuted any accusations of match-fixing, insisting that the game was done honestly and competitively.
After reviewing the game, UEFA also discovered no proof of conspiracy or misconduct on the part of the participating teams, which led to them upholding the outcome.

Whilst the focus may be on improving Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham Hotspur squad this summer, reports suggest that the North London club are now ready to offload one particular player.
Tottenham transfer news
The Lilywhites are still chasing a place in the Premier League's top four in the hope of leapfrogging Aston Villa into the Champions League places come the end of the season, which could play a large part in their summer transfer plans. Qualification for Europe's elite competition would certainly go a long way in convincing the likes of Morgan Gibbs-White to complete a move to Postecoglou's side, that's for sure.
Tottenham now told it will take more than £17m price to sign 25 y/o
Frustrating for the Lilywhites…
ByTom Cunningham Mar 30, 2024
The Nottingham Forest star isn't the only player to have already been linked with a North London switch either, with a shock move for Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire now being mooted. The England international has struggled at Old Trafford, but could now get a fresh start at Spurs amid a recent return to form.
Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof
To fund those moves, Spurs may need to be ruthless on the departure front, however, as Postecoglou looks to clear the deadwood remaining at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. And that is likely to see Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg depart.
According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, Tottenham are planning to accept an offer for Hojbjerg this summer to cash in on the Dane before his contract expires in June 2025. Hojbjerg has struggled for minutes since the arrival of Postecoglou and is among those in need of a fresh start elsewhere, having previously been linked with the likes of Newcastle United in the January window.
Given that Hojbjerg's current salary reportedly sits as high as £110k per-week, despite his limited minutes, it's no surprise that Spurs are keen to clear the 28-year-old from their wage bill and earn a transfer fee in the process this summer.
"Determined" Hojbjerg must still be replaced
Whilst it's easy to claim that a player in Hojbjerg's role isn't important, squad depth can quickly prove to be the key when attempting to compete in both European and domestic action. So, if Spurs are to sanction the sale of the former Southampton man, then they must still think about welcoming a replacement this summer.
Whoever does come in must be prepared to play a squad role, however, with Hojbjerg starting just six times in the Premier League so far this season, to sum up his struggles. Those struggles haven't stopped Postecoglou's praise for the Dane though.
The former Celtic boss said earlier this season:
“With Pierre, he is a professional and very determined to win a spot in the team. He presents himself well every day and over a 38-game season all of these guys will get an opportunity at some point. What they do with that is up to them.
“In the meantime, what is important is if they want to keep getting opportunities, they have to train well and when they do play, whether they start or not, they contribute to the team.”
Alas, that praise doesn't look set to prevent Spurs' decision, with Hojbjerg edging closer and closer to a summer departure after four years in North London.

He captained Guyana in the final four games of the Caribbean Premier League in 2018, and recently told ESPNcricinfo that he had received some “good feedback” from Australia’s selectors about his standing ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup.

Arsenal enjoyed another brilliant weekend, claiming another three points and climbing back to the top of the Premier League table.
Mikel Arteta's side once again have their fate back in their own hands, although before they can think about Sunday's clash with Aston Villa, they'll have to deal with Bayern Munich in the Champions League tonight.
The Gunners were excellent against Brighton & Hove Albion, but the German behemoths are a whole nother kettle of fish, and, as such, Arteta should look to drop Gabriel Jesus if he wants to secure a first competitive win over the Bavarians since 2015.

Gabriel Jesus' stats against Brighton
Now, the first thing to say is that while the Spaniard should look at dropping Jesus for tonight's blockbuster clash, it's not because he was terrible on Saturday afternoon, just underwhelming.
The former Manchester City ace was a thorn in the side of the Seagulls and even won the penalty that opened the scoring, but he also missed a number of gilt-edge chances and made a few poor decisions at critical moments, which could seriously cost the Gunners in a European knockout game.
It might sound harsh, but it's an opinion shared by the Standard's Simon Collings, who awarded the tricky forward a 6/10 on the day, writing that he 'should have come away from this with a goal' and that he 'missed two good headed chances in either half.'
This summary is also backed up by the 27-year-old's statistics from the game. In his 64 minutes of action, the 5 foot 9 ace registered an expected goal figure of 0.44, took one shot on target and two off target, succeeded in just one of his six attempted dribbles, won a penalty, missed one big chance, took 43 touches, was accurate in just 82% of his passes, lost nine of his 13 duels, and lost the ball 14 times.

In all, while he was effective at creating space and harassing Brighton's defence, Jesus was unable to put away the myriad of chances that came his way.
This may well cost the team in tonight's high-pressure encounter, so he should be replaced by someone who was able to take his chance on Saturday.

The man who must start in place of the Brazilian tonight is Belgian international Leandro Trossard.
Despite only coming on in the 64th minute against his former side on Saturday, the 29-year-old "wizard", as journalist Charlie Haffenden described him, made his mark on proceedings by running the length of the pitch to score a brilliant chip to secure all three points for the North Londoners.
The goal was the perfect encapsulation of what makes him great: an intelligent position to win the ball, a clever run so that Kai Havertz could find him in space, a great touch to knock the ball into more space, and an expertly placed chip to finish the outstanding move.
It's this lethal streak that means he has to start against FC Hollywood tonight, as chances will likely be harder to come by, and when they do come, it's better they fall to him than Jesus.

Moreover, it wasn't just Saturday that the £90k-per-week star has shown his finishing ability, as in his 37 appearances this season, he has scored 12 goals, whereas his Brazilian counterpart has scored eight goals in his 28 games this year.
Ultimately, based on the game at the Amex and their finishing throughout the season, Arteta must start Trossard over Jesus against Bayern Munich.
