England players 'not blind to reality' with cuts to new central contracts on the agenda – Ashley Giles

Players face pay cut as ECB comes to terms with Covid’s financial crunch

Ashley Giles says that England’s players are “not blind to the reality” of English cricket’s financial situation amid the Covid-19 outbreak, as their representatives continue talks with the ECB over the prospect of pay cuts to their newly announced central contracts for 2020-21.Despite praising the efforts made by England’s players to “keep the lights on” during a pandemic-blighted summer, Giles warned that the new contracts – a total of 24 across red- and white-ball cricket, plus four incremental deals – would “not be worth the paper they are written on” if a spate of cancellations of future series caused the board to receive no income. And with this winter’s itineraries, against South Africa in December and Sri Lanka and India in the new year, still awaiting confirmation by their respective boards, Giles urged England’s players to remain flexible and open-minded about the challenges that still lie ahead for the sport, and the impact that may have on their remuneration.ALSO READ: Pope, Crawley, Sibley win first central contracts”We are still in those discussions, and they are really positive discussions,” Giles said of the ECB’s negotiations with the Team England Player Partnership (TEPP). “Although the players have been in a bubble for the majority of this summer, they’re not blind to the reality of what’s going on out in the world.”England’s players donated a combined sum of £500,000 when the start of the English season was postponed in April, at which point most of the counties chose to furlough their playing staff. And by agreeing to put up with life inside biosecure environments at the Ageas Bowl and Emirates Old Trafford, the Test and white-ball squads helped ensure that all 18 of the men’s scheduled internationals were played to fulfil their broadcast deal with Sky Sports.Had no international cricket been possible this summer, the ECB’s projected losses of £100 million could have been more than three times worse, and Giles acknowledged that the board’s duty of care to their players was more important than ever as a consequence – in particular the threat of burn-out, which is one key reason why this year’s list of contracts has been expanded by two from last year’s figure of 22.ALSO READ: Giles backs Bairstow to fight for Test place”The players have done a huge amount this summer, saving a lot of money for cricket across the board, and in some aspects, keeping the lights on,” Giles said. “But they understand they’ve still got a part to play. We’re getting very close to reaching a conclusion, at which point we will make another statement.”The players are at that very pointy end of everything we do,” he added. “The county game appreciates that, and this year probably more than any other time. It’s one of the reasons we were looking to diversify our cricketing revenue streams with the Hundred. But right now, in terms of income, what these guys do on the field is paramount, not just us as the ECB, but the whole system, right down to grassroots, women’s cricket, disabilities. They are absolutely crucial.”The ECB announced a total of 62 redundancies in a major restructuring earlier this month, while Giles and other senior management, including Tom Harrison the chief executive, also took pay cuts at the start of the pandemic. However, Giles insisted that the board was still looking to fill vacancies on the England coaching team – in the batting, bowling and fielding roles – that have been covered by a series of short-term appointments since Chris Silverwood took over as head coach last year.Darren Gough was one short-term appointment as a fast-bowling consultant on last year’s tour of New Zealand, while Richard Dawson, Glenn Chapple and Chris Read were used during the West Indies series. A visa issue kiboshed the ECB’s hopes of recruiting Jeetan Patel during the Pakistan series outside of his playing commitments with Warwickshire after his stint over the winter, with Graeme Welch, Jonathan Trott and Azhar Mahmood among those stepping in. With enlarged squads of players likely to enter team bubbles for the foreseeable, Giles recognised the need to move on from such short-term arrangements.”I know we’re making redundancies but these are not additional positions: they are important for us to be able to function,” he said. “When we had two bubbles running, we recruited help from the counties which was fantastic. But that isn’t really sustainable on a 12-month basis, particularly when cricket returns to some normality.”We want these positions to work up and down the system, not just Team England, but our development teams and the counties as well. This year we showed we could operate with bubbles of 30, so we’ve got a lot of players out there who need attention and servicing.””We’ve had to make efficiencies across the business. We have all got to share the load and be leaner. But it won’t hamper Chris, it won’t tie his hands. He’ll get the support he needs to help England be successful.”

Nottingham Forest must finally sell flop who earns more than Elanga

Nottingham Forest have a huge summer ahead of them to avoid any further breach of the Premier League’s PSR rules whilst improving their squad to maintain their top-flight status.

Nuno Espírito Santo’s side endured a tricky second half of the 2023/24 campaign, especially considering a four-point deduction which plunged them into fresh relegation woes.

With the summer transfer window now open, the club will undoubtedly need to bolster their ranks if they are to build on the end of the season which saw Nuno’s side win two of their last three matches.

However, given their financial troubles, they may have to sell multiple players to cut the wage bill and give themselves a huge chance of avoiding a second PSR punishment in as many seasons.

Financial Fair Play: What is PSR, how does it work and who's in trouble?

Leicester City have become the latest club charged with an alleged PSR breach, but what could happen next?

ByStephan Georgiou Apr 16, 2024

One player in particular must be sold, especially considering his lack of impact since his move to the East Midlands last summer.

Odysseas Vlachodimos’ stats at Forest in 2023/24

After arriving in Nottingham following a £7.7m move from Portuguese side Benfica, goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos had ambitions of becoming the club's number one despite the addition of Matt Turner just a couple of weeks prior.

The 30-year-old, who is Greece's number one, had to bide his time before making his debut for the club, failing to make a single appearance until the 2-0 win over Aston Villa in November.

His clean sheet against Unai Emery's side is his only during his time in the Premier League, with his game time decreasing massively since the turn of the year.

Vlachodimos has only featured twice under Nuno, with both starts coming in the FA Cup against Blackpool. Insteaad, January addition Matz Sels started every Premier League match after his move to the City Ground.

The former Benfica shot-stopper has since become the third choice behind Sels and Turner, failing to appear in a single matchday squad since the 2-1 defeat against Arsenal in January.

A summer move must be on the cards for the 30-year-old, with the club needing to shift his hefty wages to avoid another punishment from the Premier League for breaking their PSR rules.

How much Odysseas Vlachodimos earns at Forest

A recent report from Football Insider claims that the Reds are willing to part ways with the shot-stopper this summer, hardly a surprise given his hefty wages at the City Ground.

The goalkeeper signed a four-year deal upon his move to the East Midlands, on a reported £45k-per-week, as per Capology – a huge figure given his lack of impact on Trentside.

His weekly wage of £45k-per-week sees the Greece international take home £2.3m a season, with the club needing to cut such a figure off the bill this summer.

Vlachodimos’ subsequent wage sees him earn nearly two times more than attacker Anthony Elanga, who only earns a reported £25k-per-week, despite his stellar first campaign at the City Ground which saw him register 14 goal contributions.

Whilst at the time it was seen as a brilliant piece of business signing a player of his calibre, it has, unfortunately for both parties, been a complete disaster.

Given his experience in Portugal and internationally, he certainly won’t be short of interest, with the Reds needing to cash in as soon as possible to avoid missing the June 30th PSR deadline.

Rangers could land lethal Igamane partner who scored 26 times last season

Head of recruitment Nils Koppen has been hard at work to improve the Glasgow Rangers playing squad during the summer transfer window, which officially opened for business earlier this month.

The Light Blues have wasted little time as they have already brought in a number of fresh signings to bolster Philippe Clement's options across the park.

Brazilian left-back Jefte, central defender Clinton Nsiala, and central midfielder Connor Barron have all been snapped up, whilst Mohammed Diomande's loan has been turned into a permanent deal, and Oscar Cortes has signed on a second loan, with an obligation to make it permanent next summer.

German forward Yusuf Kabadayi is said to be in advanced talks over a £1m switch from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich to add to the club's wide options.

The Scottish giants are also reportedly set to sign Morocco U23 international Hamza Igamane on a permanent deal from FAR Rabat for a fee of £1.5m.

Clement could land a lethal partner for the Moroccan talent by signing a more experienced Scottish Premiership performer to play alongside him next season.

Rangers' interest in Premiership marksman

Back in May, FOTMob reported that the Gers are one of a number of clubs interested in signing Aberdeen centre-forward Bojan Miovski this summer.

The outlet claimed that the Light Blues are one of the teams closely monitoring his situation with the Scottish side, as five sides have a 'serious' interest in him.

Celtic, Bologna, Southampton, and Feyenoord are the other four outfits eyeing up a potential deal to sign the North Macedonia international, who was lauded as "complete" by journalist Josh Bunting, ahead of next season.

Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski.

The report revealed, however, that the Dons marksman's preference is to secure a move to the Premier League this summer, which would hand the Saints an advantage after they won the play-off final to be promoted to the top-flight last month.

It also claimed that Celtic are ahead of Rangers in this particular transfer race due to their qualification for the group stages of next season's Champions League.

However, it remains to be seen whether or not the Hoops are prepared to push ahead with a deal for the left-footed attacker and there could still be a chance for the Gers to swoop in if their rivals look elsewhere.

If the Scottish giants are able to strike a deal with Aberdeen to sign the 24-year-old dynamo then they could land a dream partner for Igamane, who looks set to join on a permanent deal in the coming weeks, next term.

Why Hamza Igamane could need a strike partner

The 21-year-old talent is poised to move away from his home country of Morocco for the first time in his career and it remains to be seen whether or not he will be able to hit the ground running in Scotland.

Igamane has no experience of European or Scottish football and that is a barrier that he has to overcome in order to be a success for the Gers.

Rangers may not, therefore, be able to bank on him as their first-choice centre-forward straight away, as it would be a gamble to expect him to instantly perform.

He is also a versatile attacker who has played out wide on both flanks and through the middle as an attacking midfielder in his career to date.

This suggests that Clement could utilise him in other roles around Miovski in order to slowly bed him into life in Scotland, as he could play out on the wing or behind the Aberdeen star as a number ten whilst he is still growing and gaining experience in the division.

As you can see in the table above, Igamane showcased his ability as both a scorer and a creator of goals from a centre-forward position during the 2023/24 campaign.

The 21-year-old ace, who has scored 16 goals in 58 matches for FAR Rabat at first-team level, also completed 1.9 successful dribbles per game in the division, whilst no Gers player managed more than 1.3 per outing in the Premiership.

This suggests that he is a direct player who likes to take opposition defenders on and this, coupled with his ability to provide assists for his teammates, could make him an effective foil for Miovksi as he could drive from deep or out wide, as a number ten or winger, before providing the striker with key passes.

Why Bojan Miovski could be a lethal partner for Hamza Igamane

Firstly, the left-footed star is a proven Premiership performer who could come in and be an instant success on the pitch, as he has already shown off his quality at that level.

This means that Miovski could come in as the first-choice number nine for the Gers and be realistically expected to hit the ground running in the division, which would immediately take pressure off Igamane's shoulders, instead of him being expected to fire in the goals straight off the bat.

The 24-year-old dynamo, who scored 26 goals in all competitions for Aberdeen last season, has smashed in 32 goals across his first two seasons in the Premiership with the Scottish outfit.

This shows that he knows how to find the back of the net at an impressive rate in the top-flight and could be a reliable scoring option for Clement, which would then allow Igamane the time he needs to develop and improve, and provide the youngster with a fantastic striker to play alongside and learn from.

As you can see in the table above, Miovski scored as many goals as Rangers striker Cyriel Desers in the Premiership last season, but his efficiency was significantly more impressive.

Despite scoring the same number of goals, the Nigeria international missed a staggering 12 more 'big chances' and had a much lower conversion rate.

This suggests that Miovski could have thrived and outperformed Dessers if he had the service that the former Cremonese man had in a Gers shirt.

Bangladesh players' strike, a year on: BCB says relationship with players 'cordial'

However, the players’ silence leaves questions hanging

Mohammad Isam20-Oct-2020

It has been a year since several Bangladesh players took part in a players’ strike•BCB

A year on from the players’ strike that shook Bangladesh cricket, senior BCB officials believe that their relationship with country’s cricketers remains “cordial”. But the players have refrained from making any public statements about the strike, despite it being widely acknowledged that they had raised relevant issues which were affecting the country’s cricket.Their use of the word “respect” at the very beginning of their address to the media, on October 21 last year, touched a chord with the public. Players in Bangladesh have felt aggrieved for decades and last year, particularly after the World Cup, a few episodes in particular motivated them to take such a bold step. However a meeting with the BCB two days after the strike began, chaired by board president Nazmul Hassan, which led to the concluding of the strike, has seemingly had a long-term effect on the cricketers who were in attendance. They have hardly followed up on their plan to redraw the leadership of the Bangladesh players’ association, the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB), which was the first point on their list of demands. When ESPNcricinfo contacted several cricketers who are either centrally contracted or under the first-class contract of the board, theyrefused to talk about the follow-up to the strike. The general feeling was that they were reluctant to stir up more controversy, and wanted to avoid the repercussions of any comments made by them which may be viewed as contrary to the board’s stance.Nizamuddin Chowdhury, the BCB’s chief executive, said that the board is receptive to any approach made by the players, citing the example of how president Hassan has always been regularly in touch with players. He said that they are keen to listen to the players, whether they want to communicate at a personal level or through the players’ body, the CWAB.”I don’t see any deterioration in our relationship with the players,” Chowdhury told ESPNcricinfo. “They are the main stakeholders of the board. The board takes responsibility like a guardian. I don’t think there was any gap between us. They had some issues, which we have addressed. The relationship between the players and board is always cordial.”We have kept all channels open, whichever medium they want to use [to communicate with us]. There’s considerable player representation in the current board, [more] than ever before. By constitution, there is players’ representation in the board. Players have access to everyone in the board. You very well know that our president has a personal relation with the players.”Getty Images

BCB director Ismail Haider Mallick, who also heads the BPL’s governing council, termed the players’ demands “logical” and believes the board has taken steps to resolve some of the issues that were raised. Mallick said that they have brought back the usual domestic-player transfers, an open-market concept through which the players can go to a club of their choice in the List-A Dhaka Premier League within a set window, as opposed to the players-by-choice system, which was a type of draft wherein the clubs chose the players. He also said that they will revert to a franchise-based model for future editions of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), after a season in which the teams were owned by the board.”Except the first-class cricketers’ salary, a number of their demands have been met. We have raised the first-class match fees and the number of players who get monthly salaries.”We have also removed players-by-choice in Dhaka Premier League (DPL) and returned the BPL to its previous format. They made some logical demands which were met positively,” he said.Mallick said it is a continuous process, and the board will deal with more issues in the future. “It is not a static situation. We haven’t fixed everything. We will address issues whenever they come up again,” he said. One official, requesting anonymity, said that while the BCB has come across as genuine in its approach towards the players after the strike, the relationship is strained at the very least.”The players made logical demands but their process wasn’t great. They are no longer valued like they used to be, though the BCB remains sincere in their approach to solve the issues,” the official said. “There are fewer personal favours now.”The differing opinions and the players’ reluctance to comment prompt some questions. But there is no denying that the BCB began to meet demands less than a week after the strike was concluded. They increased match fees and allowances and raised provisions for travel, accommodations and meals in the first-class competitions. They have also committed to increasing the monthly salary for contracted first-class cricketers. But the players have been mostly reticent about discussing CWAB elections and the overall restructuring that they had demanded. CWAB general secretary Debabrata Paul said that they have had only one fruitful meeting on this particular matter with the players in the past year.”Within a month after their strike, we briefed the players including Shakib Al Hasan, about our association’s constitution,” Paul said. “Shakib told us that they will get back to us in three days, but they didn’t get back to us for two weeks. They wanted another meeting but they only sent [Jahurul Islam] Omi. Shakib didn’t come to the meeting.”But we have been in touch with the senior cricketers throughout the Covid-19 pandemic when we had online meetings about first-class cricketers. They have been quite active in five meetings so far. I would say that our relationship with the players is in better shape than at any point in time.”Paul said that CWAB remains on course to hold its AGM and elections as soon as players gather in the capital for the DPL.Ideally, though, in the aftermath of a dispute between the players and the board, the players’ association plays a central role in mediating a balanced working relationship between the two. CWAB has to be a more visible participant in the process, and work at reducing the apathy that the cricketers have felt towards them, leading to the protest in the first place. That said, it is perhaps a positive sign that the strike has caused both players and administrators to be a little wary of relying too heavily on their personal relationship. A working partnership is what is desired by everyone involved, and the sooner it takes shape, preferably moulded by the players’ association, the better it will be for Bangladesh cricket.
