T20 World Cup: Ravi Rampaul back in West Indies squad; Sunil Narine out

Nearly a decade after winning the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka, seamer Ravi Rampaul has a chance to add to his title after being picked in West Indies’ 15-member squad for the upcoming edition of the tournament.Rampaul, now 36, had last played a T20I for West Indies in November 2015 but is now back in the mix after emerging as the best seamer on the spin-friendly St Kitts tracks in the ongoing CPL.Offspin-bowling allrounder Roston Chase, who is uncapped in T20Is, elbowed his way into the squad after impressing in both CPL 2020 and 2021 for the St Lucia franchise. However, there was no place for Sunil Narine and Jason Holder was only part of the reserves.”Ravi Rampaul is a highly experienced bowler who performed well in the last CG Insurance Super50 Cup and the current Hero CPL to date,” lead selector Roger Harper said in a media release. “He will boost the team’s wicket-taking options in the powerplay and the middle phase and will provide another option for the death overs.”Roston Chase has shown that he is a very capable T20 player. He performed well in the CPL in 2020 and has been outstanding in the 2021 edition so far. He has shown the ability to knit the innings together while still scoring at a fast rate with a low dot-ball percentage. He will be an excellent foil for the explosive players in the team.”West Indies squad for the 2021 T20 World Cup•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Narine has been active in the CPL and the IPL and was more recently part of the Hundred as well, but he hasn’t been in action for West Indies since 2019, when he indicated to the national selectors that he was “not ready” for international cricket. In Narine’s absence, legspinner Hayden Walsh Jr is the only specialist spinner in the group. He will be assisted by fingerspin-bowling allrounders Fabian Allen and Chase. Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein didn’t make the main squad but is among the travelling reserves as is Darren Bravo.Dwayne Bravo, who had suffered a groin injury during St Kitts & Nevis Patriots’ clash against St Lucia Kings on September 4, and hasn’t played in the CPL since, however, was cleared for selection. Bravo had come out of T20I retirement in December 2019 to reunite with captain Kieron Pollard in the hunt for another world title.Tearaway Oshane Thomas, who has played only two T20Is this year, also found a place after bowling sharp spells for his new CPL side Barbados Royals. Thomas hit speeds north of 140kph and cranked it up when he bowled Chris Gayle with a 142kph rocket.Rampaul, though, is the biggest surprise although he is currently the top wicket-taker in the CPL, with 17 strikes in eight matches at an average of 13 and an economy rate of 7.20. In addition to pounding the deck with pace, Rampaul has been effective with his slower cutters. Earlier in the 2020-21 Super 50 Cup, Rampaul was the second-highest wicket-taker, with 14 strikes in six matches for Trinidad & Tobago. Obed McCoy lends more variety to the attack with his left-arm angle and change-ups.As for Chase, he is the top-scorer in this CPL, with 281 runs in seven innings at an average of over 70 and strike rate of over 150. In the past two seasons, he has also fronted up to bowl the tough overs for the St Lucia franchise. There was no room, though, for batter Sherfane Rutherford or allrounder Romario Shepherd.Nine of West Indies’ squad members will feature in the second leg of the IPL in the UAE before they begin their T20 World Cup defence with a rematch of the 2016 final, against England on October 23.Harper backed the side to successfully defend their world title. “The squad is one with good depth and strength in all departments,” he said. “There is tremendous T20 experience along with World Cup-winning experience which should stand the team in good stead. This squad is made up of many world-beating players who, once knitted into a world-beating team, will be extremely difficult to beat. I expect the team to do very well and with the rub of the green I think the team has a good chance of defending the title.”Squad: Kieron Pollard (capt), Nicholas Pooran (vice-capt & wk), Fabian Allen, Dwayne Bravo, Roston Chase, Andre Fletcher (wk), Chris Gayle, Shimron Hetmyer, Evin Lewis, Obed McCoy, Ravi Rampaul, Andre Russell, Lendl Simmons, Oshane Thomas, Hayden Walsh JrReserves: Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Sheldon Cottrell, Darren Bravo

Cost the club £35m: Newcastle star is now worth millions less after leaving

Newcastle United have made some significant improvements, wall to wall, over the past several years, with Eddie Howe transforming St. James’ Park into a team of capability at the upper end of the Premier League ladder.

Scratch that. Newcastle proved themselves in the Champions League last season, robbed against Paris Saint-Germain, foiled by injuries, but nonetheless, the Magpies played with skill and purpose, looked the part.

Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak

Much has been made of United’s brilliant transfer activity, bringing in the likes of Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes and Sven Botman (among others), but he’s been equally pinpoint in his sales, freeing Tyneside of its flotsam and jetsam.

Eddie Howe's Newcastle sales

Admittedly, few of a Newcastle persuasion will have wanted to see top talents like Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson sold this summer, but PSR problems forced Howe’s hand, and it meant that the above-mentioned superstars were kept on the books.

Elliot Anderson for Newcastle

Previously, though, there have been some bold calls that have bore dividends for the Premier League club, with Allan Saint-Maximin’s £23m transfer to the Saudi Pro League’s Al Ahli in 2023 allowing Gordon to grow into his skin on the left flank and win United’s Player of the Season award.

Chris Wood, 32, might be thriving with Nottingham Forest, scoring 19 top-flight goals since the start of last season, but his time at Newcastle didn’t go to plan, and Howe’s transfer team deserve praise for recouping £15m from the initial £25m outlay, despite his struggles.

There are several more that deserve praise for the manner of ruthlessness shown by Howe, who recognised the squad’s potential from the offing and acted incisively.

One such sale was that of Jonjo Shelvey, who left St. James’ Park at just the right time.

Newcastle hit gold selling Jonjo Shelvey

Newcastle sold Shelvey to Nottingham Forest for around £6m in January 2023, the same time that Wood moved to the City Ground.

Former Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey

Shelvey arrived at a tumultuous time in Newcastle’s history, January 2016, to be precise. Arriving from Swansea City with a £12m transfer fee attached, the 32-year-old instantly cemented an important role but failed to prevent a plummet into the Championship.

He’d ply his trade on Tyneside for some time, actually playing the lion’s share of his wandering senior career in black and white, across a seven-year period.

Even so, injuries left his influence stretching weakly across the expanse of his Tyneside career, only hitting 30 Premier League starts in a campaign once across his stay.

Shelvey might have been a fan favourite, with his mean ball-striking ability and passion obvious from the get-go, but he was sold at the perfect time, with his £70k-per-week contract having cost Newcastle £35m in total, when combining it with that £12m transfer fee.

As you can see from the table above, the Englishman only managed eight appearances for the Tricky Trees and has since tapered off toward the end of his career in Turkey, with his diminishing impact leading to a price depreciation that, as per Football Transfers, has him marked with a lowly £1m value.

Given that Newcastle’s midfield has been so imperious in recent years, it would appear that he was sold at the perfect time, with Shelvey’s departure allowing the likes of Guimaraes, Joelinton and Sean Longstaff to cement an awesome engine room.

Queensland kit stolen ahead of rescheduled Sheffield Shield clash in Adelaide

Thieves broke into the team van while it parked outside the hotel

Queensland’s rescheduled trip to Adelaide got off on the wrong foot after the team van was broken into and some playing equipment stolen ahead of Thursday’s Sheffield Shield clash with Tasmania at Karen Rolton Oval.Thieves broke the van’s window while it was parked outside the team hotel and stole some gear. Queensland wicketkeeper Jimmy Peirson posted a photo on his Instagram of the van’s broken window stating that he was “the unlucky one” to have a couple of brand new bats stolen.Queensland have reported the incident to South Australia police who are investigating the matter using the hotel’s CCTV footage.

The Bulls begin their title defence on Thursday against Tasmania having been forced to fly out of Queensland after a Covid-19 outbreak in Brisbane. The game was initially set to start last Tuesday at Ian Healy Oval in Brisbane but the game was postponed due to four cases being reported in the city. Tasmania made the decision to fly home.Cricket Australia subsequently rescheduled the fixture to be played in Adelaide this week. The Queensland players and staff have been free to enter South Australia and do not have to quarantine however they did have to undergo a Covid-19 test on arrival, with all members of the travelling party returning negative results. The squad can move around Adelaide freely but do have to undergo two more tests on days five and 12 after their arrival.CA is still yet to confirm whether New South Wales and Victoria will be able to enter South Australia and begin their Sheffield Shield and Marsh Cup campaigns. NSW were scheduled to fly to Adelaide on Monday to undergo a 14-day hard hotel quarantine but those plans were put on hold by the South Australian government. CA, NSW and Victoria are continuing talks with the SA government in the hopes an agreement can be reached. Both states have requested seven days of training for their players after any potential 14-day isolated quarantine meaning that neither side will be able to play until at least late October or early November.

No Verdão, viveu altos e baixos.

He lost possession 20x: Nuno must now boldly drop Nottingham Forest star

Nottingham Forest made it two Premier League wins in a row after beating fellow East Midlands side Leicester City 3-1 at the King Power last night.

Goals from captain Ryan Yates and a double from the in-form Chris Wood secured a fourth win from nine league matches, preserving the Reds’ unbeaten away record so far this season.

The New Zealand international’s two goals take him to seven goals already this campaign, with the 32-year-old now second in the goalscoring charts behind just Erling Haaland.

Nuno Espírito Santo’s men now sit fifth in the league before the rest of the weekend’s fixtures, a remarkable feat – highlighting the excellent start in the first few months of 2024/25.

It’s a stark contrast from the last couple of years in England’s top-flight, looking like a tough side to break down, conceding just seven times with numerous players starring in the recent victory over former boss Steve Cooper’s side.

Forest’s star performers against Leicester

Midfielder Yates produced another superb display in the middle of the park, with his workmanlike style catching the eye once more – even adding a goal to his all-round display.

The 26-year-old featured for the entire 90 minutes, winning seven duels and winning two fouls as he helped see out the victory – starring in his leadership role.

Yates’ defensive display was impressive yet again, making an interception, three recoveries and five clearances as he appears to be relishing the challenge of taking his personal game to the next level after often being the supporters’ scapegoat.

Wood, meanwhile, has been a revelation since Nuno’s appointment, scoring 17 times since the end of December – making him the second-highest Premier League goalscorer in Forest’s history.

At the time of his £15m signing, it was laughed at and often dubbed a waste of money, but now the rest of the division will be jealous of the addition, with Wood’s goals equating to 60% of the club’s league strikes since the start of the campaign.

It was undoubtedly a phenomenal night’s work for Nuno’s side – registering yet another victory – but not every Reds’ player managed to impress, with one first-team member failing to make an impact.

The Forest player who was disappointing against Leicester

Despite the three goals away from home, it could’ve quite easily been a lot more given the opportunities that arose in and around Leicester’s 18-yard box.

Winger Anthony Elanga had an evening to forget in the East Midlands, producing some woeful figures and subsequently being replaced way before the full-time whistle.

The Swede featured for 76 minutes before being replaced by Portuguese star Jota Silva for the remainder of the encounter, with Elanga looking well off the pace throughout.

The 22-year-old only managed 33 touches, whilst attempting 12 crosses but failing to find a teammate on any occasion – looking wasteful when handed the opportunity with the ball at his feet.

He also lost possession 20 times – the most of any player for either side – further highlighting his wasteful nature on the ball, with his withdrawal unsurprising when looking at his stats from the win.

All in all, it was a fantastic performance from Nuno’s side, further pushing them up the Premier League table and building a greater gap to the relegation zone, which is undoubtedly the main aim for the rest of the season.

The Reds host West Ham United at the City Ground next Saturday looking to make it three wins in a row, with Elanga certainly fearing for his starting role after his display last night.

Sharjah pitches could be similar to those in Dhaka, and Russell Domingo is banking on that

Bangladesh head coach expects Mahedi Hasan, Afif Hossain and Nurul Hasan to become key players for the team

Russell Domingo, the Bangladesh head coach, expects his side to bank on their familiarity of the opponents as well as the conditions when they take on Sri Lanka in their first T20 World Cup Super 12s match in Sharjah. The two sides have already played a Test and an ODI series this year, and Bangladesh are aware of Sri Lanka’s white-ball capabilities despite having won the ODI series 2-1 at home. The game is in Sharjah, where the pitches might be similar to the ones Bangladesh played on in Dhaka in August and September.Related

Consistency key if Bangladesh want to have a T20 WC to remember

Mahmudullah: 'We felt bad, not right to talk about our commitment'

Stats: Shakib emulates Dwayne Bravo and equals Shahid Afridi

“I think we have played against Sri Lanka a bit over the last couple of months,” Domingo pointed out. “We have had some good contests against them in ODIs and Tests. We have a well-balanced side with skilful bowlers and some dangerous batters. We have a world-class allrounder in Shakib [Al Hasan].”These type of conditions can suit us. Sharjah is similar to the wickets in Dhaka. Hopefully that can assist us in tomorrow’s game. We are happy with the 2pm starts – it suits us big time. It takes dew out of the equation. I think our spinners will come very much into the competition. We know a lot of the other teams are focused on the dew.”Both teams have very little experience of playing in Sharjah, with Sri Lanka having played their first T20I at this venue against Netherlands on Friday. Shakib, though, did play three games in Sharjah for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL recently. Domingo agreed that “scores have come down considerably since the new wickets have been laid” in Sharjah, and expected a certain kind of bowler to make a mark.”Tall bowlers who hit the wicket have always been in the game,” he said. “I came here with South Africa [eight] years ago. I remember Morne Morkel was very effective [with] the sort of hard length that he bowled. The ball skids through. If you bowl wicket to wicket, spin has opportunity here. LBWs and bowleds come into the game. We are not known as a power-hitting side, so the [shorter boundary] could favour us.”Bangladesh have been reaping rewards of contributions from the relatively unknown trio of Mahedi Hasan, Afif Hossain and Nurul Hasan, who have recently produced crucial, if not massive, performances.Although Mahedi has bowled well with his variations in flight and speeds, he still hasn’t found enough room to have an impactful innings with the bat, failing at his only opportunity at No. 3. But, according to Domingo, he can expect another bump up the batting order at some stage.”I am a big fan of Mahedi. I think the most important thing is his character,” he said. “He is always up to fulfill any role in the team. It is not easy batting up the order, [and then] down the order. He never complains. He is focused on what the team needs. He is versatile with the ball – he can bowl in the middle, at the death and up front.”He is definitely a three-in-one cricketer for us. The big thing about his preparation is that he is happy to be doing any role. He sees them as a big challenge, and takes them on 100%. I am happy with how his campaign has gone so far.”Domingo on Nurul Hasan: “His keeping [has] been magnificent, he probably saved us 10-12 runs behind the stumps”•ICC/Getty Images

Afif, meanwhile, has been coming into his own in an attacking role in the middle order, even though he hasn’t had a lot of time in the middle, while Nurul has been sharp behind the wickets, although he is yet to answer the call with the bat.”I think Afif and Sohan [Nurul] will be seriously good players for Bangladesh in this format,” Domingo said. “Sohan is our one big-hitter at the back-end of the innings. Afif got 20 off 13 balls the other day [21 off 14 against PNG]. He is playing well. I hope he can kick on in this phase. They are big players for us.”Sohan’s keeping [has] been magnificent. He probably saved us 10-12 runs behind the stumps. It is often the difference in these matches. I have been pleased with both their performances. Runs may not be massive at the moment, but what they provide to the team is of immense value.”But it all might come down to how well Bangladesh manage to control their emotions in the Super 12s phase. There has already been considerable backlash from many quarters, including BCB president Nazmul Hassan, who criticised the senior players and the side’s overall attitude following their defeat to Scotland early in the first round.”When you are playing for Bangladesh, there’s always going to be criticism when things don’t go well – it is part of international sport,” he said. “A big part of coaching is for the team to focus on what they can control. There’s nothing we can do about what people are writing and saying. Everton must axe £100k-p/w ace who has scored as many goals as Keane

Everton suffered their first Premier League defeat since mid-September after Southampton scored a late winner on Saturday.

Sean Dyche’s men had shown plenty of progress in recent weeks, but they reverted to square one against the Saints.

While they have conceded 17 goals this term, it is the ability to score which has cost them dearly throughout the campaign.

Indeed, in ten matches, the Toffees have scored just ten goals. Only Southampton, Crystal Palace and Manchester United have found the back of the net on fewer occasions than Dyche’s men.

Everton’s top scorers this season

So far this season, only six players have scored for the Goodison Park side, with Dwight McNeil leading the way with four efforts across 12 matches. The former Burnley man has been one of Dyche’s key stars this term, also creating eight big chances while averaging 2.7 key passes per game in the top flight.

Dwight McNeil

Iliman Ndiaye is next on the list with three goals, enjoying a superb start for the club after only joining in the summer.

Michael Keane, Beto and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have all scored twice for Everton this term, while Abdoulaye Doucoure rounds off the list by netting once.

The most surprising aspect of this list is the fact that Calvert-Lewin has scored so few goals, despite being Dyche’s main option to lead the line.

His performances have not been great this season. Is it time to move him on sooner rather than later?

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s season in numbers

Truth be told, the £100k-per-week striker hasn’t been living up to this staggering wage for the last few seasons.

Two seasons ago, he managed just two Premier League goals, improving this to seven during the 2023/24 campaign, but these totals are why Everton find themselves languishing near the bottom of the table.

Indeed, the Englishman hasn’t scored more than ten goals since the 2020/21 season. Are his best days behind him?

He was even criticised by Jamie O’Hara following Everton’s defeat to Aston Villa in September where he missed an easy chance:

A tad harsh perhaps, but there is no questioning Calvert-Lewin is a shadow of his former self, scoring the same amount of goals as Keane this term.

When compared to positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues, the striker ranks in the bottom 5% for non-penalty goals per 90 (0.14) and outside the top 40% for total shots per 90 (2.78) over the previous 365 days.

This is yet more evidence of his diminishing qualities. The 27-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, and it remains to be seen whether or not he signs an extension in the coming weeks.

Judging by his recent form, they could certainly free up a large chunk of the wage bill by either selling him in January or releasing him at the end of the season.

New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Devon Conway has been ruled out of the T20 World Cup final on Sunday against Australia, and the subsequent India tour with a broken right hand. Conway sustained the injury when he struck his bat just after being dismissed in the semi-final against England in Abu Dhabi. An X-ray on Thursday confirmed “a break to his right hand fifth Metacarpal”.”He’s absolutely gutted to be ruled out like this at this time,” head coach Gary Stead said in an NZC release. “Devon is hugely passionate about playing for the BLACKCAPS and no one is more disappointed at the moment than he is – so we’re really trying to rally around him.”It looked a pretty innocuous reactionary incident on the field, but the blow obviously caught the bat between the glove padding, and while it’s not the smartest thing he’s done, there’s certainly an element of bad luck in the injury.”Devon is a great team-man and a very popular member of the side so we’re all feeling for him. Due to the timelines we won’t be bringing in a replacement player for this World Cup or next week’s T20 series against India, but are working through our options for the Test series later this month.”Conway scored a crucial 46 off 38 balls at No. 4 in New Zealand’s tense chase of 167 before he was stumped off Liam Livingstone’s bowling. He also took up the gloves midway into the tournament, when New Zealand decided to bring fast bowler Adam Milne into the XI, as Conway, a specialist batter in the XI until then, took over keeping duties from Tim Seifert.New Zealand had picked the same squad of 15 for the World Cup and the three T20Is in India starting on November 17, just three days after the final.Conway, with an experience of three Tests who has a double-hundred to his name on debut at Lord’s, was also in the squad of 15 for the two India Tests that will be played after the T20I series. He was the second keeping option in the squad after Tom Blundell.
