Glasgow Rangers manager Philippe Clement appears to have earned himself the chance to use the January transfer window to turn the Ibrox club’s fortunes around this season.
Football Insider reported that the Belgian boss has ‘bought’ himself some reprieve against the pressure on his position at Rangers with the team’s recent performances domestically and in Europe.
The same outlet claimed, in November, that pressure was building on Clement and that the board were prepared to give him until the League Cup final to show enough to be given more time.
Since that report, the club’s only loss in eight matches came on penalties to Celtic in the League Cup final on Sunday, after a 3-3 draw in regulation time, which came a few days after a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.
The Gers are still 11 points behind the Hoops in the Scottish Premiership table and failed to win the cup final, but their recent performances have done enough to convince the board that Clement deserves more time.
One thing that he, and Nils Koppen, must work hard to avoid, though, is losing any key stars in the January transfer window, amid reported interest in one of his top performers.
Premier League interest in Rangers starlet
According to The Boot Room, Premier League side Everton are showing a strong interest in Rangers centre-forward Hamza Igamane ahead of next month.
It states that Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Beto’s respective futures at Goodison Park are in doubt and that they could be in the market to land a new striker, whether that is in January or next summer.
The report claims that scouts from the Merseyside outfit were in attendance to watch the in-form Moroccan forward in action against Spurs in the Europa League last week.
Igamane scored the opening goal in the match, finishing well on the volley from James Tavernier’s cross, and may have impressed the scouts watching on from the stands.
The Toffees appear to be the frontrunners with the strongest interest in the summer signing from FAR Rabat, but they are far from the only team eyeing the 22-year-old starlet up.
This latest report reveals that fellow Premier League sides West Ham United, Bournemouth, Brentford, Fulham, and Newcastle United have also been scouting the young gem, alongside European teams Lille, Bayer Leverkusen, and Atalanta.
Hamza Igamane
Rangers are now, amid interest from a host of clubs across Europe, are now in danger of an awful repeat of the time they lost Nikica Jelavic during a January transfer window.
How much Rangers sold Nikica Jelavic for
At the start of 2012, Premier League side Everton swooped in to sign the 26-year-old Croatian marksman on a permanent basis for a fee of £5.5m, 18 months after his move to Ibrox from Rapid Vienna in the summer of 2010.
It was reported that his sale was key to the club being able to raise funds to do other deals, but they lost their star man and leading goalscorer in the process.
Nikica Jelavic
Jelavic was a star throughout his time in Glasgow and hit the ground running in the 2010/11 campaign, with an outstanding return of 19 goals and eight assists in 27 appearances in all competitions.
The Croatia international, who scored 16 times in 23 Scottish Premiership matches, showcased his ability to lead the line effectively, by scoring and creating goals on a regular basis for the Light Blues after joining from Rapid Vienna.
His performances helped the Gers to win the Premiership title and the League Cup, which shows that he was a decisive player who contributed to success on the pitch.
Jelavic followed that up with an eye-catching return of 17 goals and six assists in 28 games during the first half of the 2011/12 campaign, including 14 goals and four assists in 22 league outings.
Despite being in the midst of a title race, Rangers opted to cash in on him when Everton came calling and they ended up finishing second in the league, 20 points behind Celtic.
Meanwhile, Jelavic went on to score 11 goals in 16 matches for the Toffees, including nine in 13 Premier League appearances, in the second half of the season.
Why Hamza Igamane could be Nikica Jelavic 2.0
Clement and Koppen must avoid selling Igamane to Everton in January because it could have a similar impact on the club’s chances of success in the second half of the campaign.
The Moroccan whiz has not been scoring goals consistently for the past 18 months, as Jelavic had for the Gers by the start of 2012, but the summer signing’s recent form suggests that he will be key to any push for silverware in 2025.
In his last six appearances for the Scottish giants, the 22-year-old forward has produced five goals and two assists in all competitions, whilst being deployed as either a centre-forward or a left-winger.
The young gem, who was recently described as “delightful” by teammate Leon Balogun, was unfortunate not to contribute to a trophy success for Rangers on Sunday, as he was directly involved in two of the three goals in the 3-3 draw with Celtic before losing on penalties – with his shot forcing Kasper Schmeichel to parry the ball to Nedim Bajrami and his cross allowing Mohamed Diomande to score.

As you can see in the table above, Igamane has been incredibly productive in Europe for the Light Blues this season, with five direct goal contributions in two starts in the competition.
He has showcased his ability at the top end of the pitch domestically and in Europe and is the club’s in-form player at the moment, hence why so many European teams are taking an interest in potentially swooping for his services in January.
Rangers, however, should show ambition to win silverware in the second half of the season, and avoid losing their star striker to Everton, as they did with Jelavic in 2012.

The Glasgow Rangers midfielder and forward should both be sold in the January transfer window.
Paul Walter closes in on maiden first-class ton as Essex grind Yorkshire to tune of 234 for 3
Andrew Miller05-May-2022
Alastair Cook made yet another first-class hundred•Getty Images
Essex 234 for 3 (Cook 107, Walter 89*) vs Yorkshire And so it came to pass that England’s former captain duly racked up a chanceless century at Chelmsford, in front of a bustling spring crowd and with more than just the usual smattering of photographers and TV cameras in attendance. Not that the innings told us much about Joe Root’s readiness for his return to the Test ranks, however, for the ex-skipper in question was Root’s own predecessor Alastair Cook. With the sun on his back, and full faith in a surface from which he has now picked off 258 runs in five innings this season, Cook ground along in his inimitably bloodless fashion for 20 minutes shy of six hours, with Paul Walter unwavering alongside him, on 89 from 228 balls. It was all thoroughly serene for Essex as the shadows began to stretch over the County Ground – misleadingly serene, you might argue, given the off-field developments in the club’s slow-burn racism row. An open-faced nudge through third man – all angles and soft hands – took Cook to 99, then one ball later, a back-foot crack through point carried him through to first-class hundred No. 71.But then, with a daddy seemingly at his mercy, Cook fatefully lost concentration with just four overs of the day remaining, under-edging a back-foot drive as Steve Patterson came round the wicket and departing with a swish of frustration but to a familiar standing ovation. It had been a similar scenario for his opening-day century against Kent, in fact – 100 from 266 balls then, 107 from 268 now. In his pomp, he wouldn’t have allowed a nightwatchman to get the best of the day two conditions, that’s for sure.Root, in his first public outing since stepping down as England captain, will have to wait – although you sense he’s already seen enough to know that his own first-class hundred No. 37 is very much on the cards sometime this weekend – assuming his team-mates give him a look-in. As an aside, there has surely never been a non-international fixture boasting two men with a combined Test runs tally as high as 22,361 duking it out on opposing teams. For the time being, Root was limited to three tidy overs of offspin in the afternoon session, while in an apparent demonstration of the “selfless” credentials that his successor Ben Stokes has called for in his Test team, he made only fleeting appearances on the periphery of the slip cordon – the suggestion being that he does not wish to disrupt Yorkshire’s more regular line-up of close catchers.Mind you, Yorkshire’s position in this game might have been better had he done so. After Nick Browne’s departure to the third ball of the match, Harry Brook, at Root’s habitual position of first slip, dropped a sitter off Tom Westley that could have left Essex teetering at 10 for 2. He later repeated the error as Cook, in a solitary aberration, climbed into a loose drive one ball after his century with Jordan Thompson twice the luckless bowler. George Hill, Browne’s executor, also let a tough low chance fizz through his grasp at third slip – the second of two lives in as many overs for Walter who, to complete a catalogue of what-ifs, was dropped by Patterson in his followthrough on 12.But all these moments were mere footnotes to another totemic grind from Cook, whose only moment of alarm prior to his hundred arguably came on 64, when Walter’s long levers connected sweetly with a biff through the line off Dom Bess that damned near decapitated his team-mate as he ducked for cover at the non-striker’s end.Cook’s opening gambit set the tone for the day. Essex’s innings was already 35 balls old before – to ironic cheers – he nudged a single off his legs to tick up the team’s first run, and leave them on a becalmed 1 for 1 after six overs: a powerplay this was not. His next scoring shot was a picture-perfect drive through the covers off Thompson, and seeing as that stroke tended to be the last one out of his locker during his Test career, it told you all you needed to know about another demon-free surface that doubtless meets the ECB’s new requirements but potentially at the cost of a short-term contest between bat and ball.Yorkshire huffed and puffed to little avail. The green tinge on the pitch had persuaded Patterson to bowl first after winning the toss, but without the cutting edge of Haris Rauf, who pulled his side after a first-innings five-for against Kent – let alone Matt Fisher and his euphemistically worded stress reaction in his back – there was little traction to be had from any of the remaining quicks.Instead it was left to Bess to carry the first-day burden with 23 tidily delivered overs, including the second of the two wickets they managed in the lifespan of their first new ball. The timing of that breakthrough was serendipitous, as Tom Westley feathered an edge through to Harry Duke in Bess’s first over, although the ball itself was little more than a wide long-hop. Nevertheless, as Bess demonstrated with his five-wicket haul in Sri Lanka last year, before his form disintegrated on the India leg of that trip, he does have a happy knack for such breakthroughs.By the close, all eyes had turned to Walter, and his quietly determined quest to atone for his disappointment against Northamptonshire last week. On that occasion, his excellent match-saving rearguard had ended seven runs shy of a maiden first-class hundred; today he left the field 11 runs short of the mark, but crucially, he did so having leant on his bat handle at the non-striker’s end while watching Sam Cook do his nocturnal duties. Having come so close so recently, he’s determined to make amends at the earliest opportunity.

O primeiro no Século XXI.

Tottenham Hotspur are now exploring an early January deal for one transfer target who was thought to be far more likely in the summer, as Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou contends with a player selection crisis.
Tottenham eye multiple January signings amid squad shortage
Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky sealed a £12.5 million move to north London from Slavia Prague recently, with technical director Johan Lange and chairman Daniel Levy wasting no time in getting their first signing through the Hotspur Way door.

However, their winter business is very unlikely to cease there, as it is believed Tottenham could make up to three new signings before the January transfer window shuts its doors on February 3.
They’re looking at making new additions across the board, including in defence and attack, with Spurs actively pursuing a new centre-back and a potential deal for PSG forward Randal Kolo Muani.

When asked about Kolo Muani, Postecoglou, speaking to the press, didn’t address the circulating rumour directly, but does suggest that his club are still in the market for reinforcements as injuries ravage their squad.
“We’re still trying to help the squad and players,” said Postecoglou on Spurs transfers. “We will have roughly 10 first-team players missing. That’s not easy so we need to still try to help the playing group.”
Tottenham Hotspur manager AngePostecoglou
Expanding on his current player availability, Postecoglou confirmed that none of his injured crop of players are back or eligible for their Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool on Wednesday.
“Net wise we’re still down,” said Postecoglou on Tottenham team news. “We get Bentancur back and lose Sarr and Maddison to suspension. In terms of injuries, no one is back but Mikey Moore could be on the bench. Everyone from the weekend, like Radu and Archie are better, they’re good. Richarlison is training but we want him to have two solid weeks of training so if he gets through next week he will be fine. Fraser is back in training.”
The abject state of Tottenham’s squad is undoubtedly an emergency-level situation, leading to them considering an intriguing measure.
Tottenham explore early January deal for Real Betis midfielder Cardoso
According to journalist Rudy Galetti, Tottenham chiefs are exploring the possibility of signing Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso in January – months earlier than they were expected to.
Spurs possess an option to sign the “extraordinary” USA international in the summer for around £21 million, which came as part of the deal for Giovani Lo Celso to join Betis midway through 2024.
Postecoglou’s side activating the clause later this year was seen as a real possibility, though it appears they could now bring his transfer forward in light of their player selection issues.
While his price tag for January is unknown, Cardoso’s Betis contract reportedly includes a £66 million release clause, but it is unlikely that Levy would part with such a high figure just to bring him in a few months early.
Roses rivals can’t be separated as Richard Gleeson has last word to claim share of the spoils
Paul Edwards27-May-2022
Harry Brook played another eye-catching innings but was out off the final ball to give Lancashire a share of the spoils•Getty Images
Neither the frequently overcast skies nor the late May appointment to chill made a scruple of difference. This may not have been the hot summer’s night beloved of Meatloaf and connoisseurs of these unique occasions but both crowd and players know what is expected of them. And although we also missed the advancing darkness that so often adds to the drama of short-form cricket in England, maybe that was for the best, too. For in a last over that was frenetic and absurd even by the standards of these encounters Lancashire managed to tie with Yorkshire when Richard Gleeson trapped Harry Brook leg before wicket for 72 with the last ball of the 20th over when the Vikings required just one scampered single to win a T20 match at Emirates Old Trafford for the first time since 2014. It is the third tie between the sides in 33 short-form matches. And, of course, it shouldn’t have been a tie at all. The pockets of Yorkshire supporters among the 14, 000 crowd and the affluent ones draping White Rose banners from the Hilton Garden Hotel will tell you that. For after losing their first three wickets for 56 runs inside the first eight overs, Yorkshire had kept pace with a tough asking rate thanks entirely to a splendid third-wicket stand of 115 between Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Brook. Lancashire’s fielders had dropped the pair, Kohler-Cadmore being spilled by Liam Livingstone when only 14 in the second over. Another 13 runs were needed off the last over but Lancastrian indiscipline – Gleeson bowled a high full toss when Yorkshire needed six off two balls – and eased matters outrageously. A scrambled two had left Brook needing one run and Brook has middled almost every shot he’s played this season…So how the chuffin’ ‘ell did he fail on this occasion? And, of course, it shouldn’t have been a tie at all. The vast majority of the home crowd belting out the anthems as though it was the Last Night of the Proms will tell you that. Lancashire’s bowlers had never really let Kohler-Cadmore and Brook off the leash. Gleeson should have defended 13 off six and certainly 10 off three. But Shadab Khan squeezed his first ball for four and then Gleeson clearly laboured under the illusion he was a baseball pitcher. (He wasn’t alone; Luke Wood had bowled a similar full toss.) Thank God he’d managed to bowl a straight one last up.But it was that sort of evening. Both sides could be relieved and both disappointed. Supporters of both teams, sated with drama and fluctuation, were left wondering how the hell it had come to this.Well…some three hours later, before the sun got in everyone’s eyes, Lancashire’s powerplay had galloped along at a sprightly all-but-ten runs an over, which is more or less the par for this particular course on this particular evening. The only wicket to fall in those first six overs was that of Keaton Jennings, who made 19 off 14 balls before driving Matthew Revis into the midriff of Adam Lyth at mid-on. Given that he had been deposited over long-on for six by Phil Salt a few balls previously, Revis’s clenched-fist joy was understandable.Phil Salt struck a half-century on Lancashire T20 debut•Getty Images
Steven Croft made 13 before perishing in the deep to Adil Rashid but one had the feeling – this is showbiz on grass after all – that Jennings and Croft were the warm-up acts for Livingstone and Tim David, Lancashire’s Singaporean big hitter and a man who has never played a game of first-class cricket in all his spit. To a degree, that under-card instinct proved to be well-founded. Livingstone managed just one six in his 16-ball 23 but David smote three maximums deep into the stands and both energised the Emirates Old Trafford crowd. Livingstone, who only arrived back from the IPL on Thursday, helped Salt add 45 in five overs for the third wicket before he was caught at long-on by Brook off Jordan Thompson. Two overs later Salt was run out by Thompson’s throw from the deep but batting in T20 matches has become something of a relay exercise in which it is not a baton that is passed on as much as a bludgeon. As long as a batter doesn’t eat up balls, his indiscretions are, to a degree, tolerated. So Salt’s 59 in his maiden T20 innings for Lancashire and a bit of late-order whacking by Danny Lamb hoisted the total to 183. Home supporters of a statistical bent will have noted that Lancashire have won 80% of their home T20 games whenever they’ve scored above 168. Then again, what about the 20%…?Yorkshire’s pursuit nearly matched Lancashire’s in the Powerplay overs but it seemed crucial when they lost two wickets, both to Wood, in the first five overs. Dawid Malan was caught behind when swiping and Lyth was bowled when making room to work the ball away. Wood had also conceded 22 runs off his first two overs but his part in the game was not yet done. Joe Root made three off four balls before swinging the third ball of Matt Parkinson’s spell to the safe hands of the ex-Nottinghamshire man at deep square leg. That left Yorkshire poorly placed in the seventh over but Kohler-Cadmore and Brook consolidated and then accelerated. Kohler-Cadmore took 50 balls over his 67 before being run out off the last ball of the nineteenth over; Brook hit three sixes in his 72 and perhaps a few Yorkshire supporters thought he would take them home. The crowd settled for the last over and wondered which side would prevail; they little guessed it would be neither.
