West Ham United have made an approach for a £20m Premier League forward who has a history of scoring against the Irons.

Potter gets first West Ham win vs Fulham

Graham Potter got his maiden league victory as Hammers boss at the first attempt on Tuesday evening, with West Ham beating Fulham 3-2 at the London Stadium.

Goals from Carlos Soler, Tomas Soucek and Lucas Paqueta were enough to cancel out Alex Iwobi’s brace for the visitors, with West Ham starting the game with Paqueta in attack due to injuries to Niclas Fullkrug, Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio.

Talking after the win, Potter said: “It was probably not one for the purists but from our point of view we are delighted with the three points. I think we started the game a little bit passive and credit to Fulham for being in the game well and we tried to get the crowd a little bit more involved.

“Fulham scored and we thought it was a bit tough. It was about sticking together. We had some breathing space but we were never comfortable and that’s why it’s nice to get over the line.”

Attention can now turn to the transfer window for a few days before West Ham host Crystal Palace, with the Irons on the search for a striker solution for the second half of the campaign.

A number of attackers have been linked with moves to the Hammers, including summer target Jhon Duran. Reports have claimed that West Ham had a recent bid rejected for Aston Villa striker Duran, whereas speculation elsewhere has suggested that West Ham are planning a January loan bid for Marseille striker Elye Wahi.

Now, another name has emerged to solve Potter’s striker selection headache.

West Ham in talks to sign Nottingham Forest forward Awoniyi

According to Jack Rosser of The Sun, West Ham are interested in signing Nottingham Forest forward Taiwo Awoniyi. Rosser claims that the Irons have made an approach over a loan move, although a permanent transfer has also been discussed, with Forest wanting £20m.

Since then, Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg has revealed that talks are underway over a transfer for the Forest striker.

The 27-year-old has fallen out of favour at the City Ground under Nuno Espirito Santo, with Chris Wood the main man for Forest who are flying in the Premier League.

Awoniyi has been with Forest since 2022 and has a great record against West Ham, scoring three of his 18 goals for the Reds against the Irons.

The Nigeria international actually averages a goal every 75 minutes against the Hammers, so he could potentially be a shrewd option for Potter on loan.

He has found the back of the net just once in 18 appearances in all competitions during the current campaign, though, so West Ham may well be reluctant to match the £20m asking price set by Forest, making this one to keep an eye on before the deadline.

Colin Ingram hit a superb century – his second in two games in the LV= Insurance County Championship – to keep Glamorgan in the hunt to chase down a 332 target against Worcestershire at New Road.Ingram has seized the opportunity to fill the gap left by Australian star Marnus Labuschagne and been making the most of his return to red-ball cricket.He had played only game in that format in four years before this season but has responded with 83 versus Durham and 178 against Sussex in his previous two Championship appearances.Ingram was finally dismissed shortly before the close for 102 and the second new ball will be available first thing on Wednesday morning with 100 required by the visitors.Glamorgan captured the final four wickets for 52 runs in 13.4 overs after Worcestershire resumed on 147 for 6. Pace bowler Michael Neser picked up two more wickets to finish with match figures of 7 for 90 and take his tally for the campaign to 32.Neser has been the most impressive bowler on either side in this game, exploiting a pitch on which the occasional delivery has taken off.Only Middlesex’s Toby Roland-Jones and Durham’s England pace bowler Matt Potts have taken more Division Two wickets this summer than the 32-year-old.Gareth Roderick fell victim to a lifter from Neser as an edge flew to to Ingram at third slip. But then Billy Root joined forces with Ingram to add 95.Ingram swept Baker for four to reach three figures but then was undone by a Barnard delivery which nipped back and was lbw. His 203-ball knock contained 13 boundaries.

A report emerged earlier in the week that Leeds scouts watched Bali Mumba in action on Saturday in Plymouth’s game against Brentford in the FA Cup. The defender is well known to Farke, as he gave him his Premier League debut for Norwich City a few years ago, and the German may now be keen on reuniting with the defender. Potential exits are also on the cards for the Whites this month, with striker Patrick Bamford’s future very much up in the air.

Blackburn Rovers boss John Eustace has now confirmed that Bamford is on a list of transfer targets for his side this month: “Patrick is a very good player. I played with him at Derby a long time ago when he started out.

“He’s a consistent performer at this level; he plays for a huge club in Leeds. But there will be lots of names thrown towards me, and I’ll just say they’re good players. You’d have to ask the club. He’s a player on a long list that we have looked at, and we’ll have to see.”

Leeds reach £3m asking price for 21 y/o midfielder

The Championship side now have a new player on their radar, as according to Portuguese journalist Sebastiao Sousa Pinto, Leeds have made a €4 million offer to sign Djé D’avilla, which is the fee Leiria wanted for the player.

The 21-year-old, who is a ‘number six’ by trade, currently plays for Liga Portugal 2 side Leiria and has done so since July 2022. D’avilla started his career in the Ivory Coast before moving to the Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal United in 2021, a year before his move to Portugal.

The midfielder has only recently broken into the team at Leiria, after a loan spell away from the club, and he looks as though, during 30-plus appearances for the club, he has done enough to emerge on Leeds’ radar. Sousa Pinto reports that the Whites have made an offer which is roughly £3 million, and that is the amount that the Portuguese side is happy with.

However, a transfer still looks quite difficult to complete, due to the work permit he would need to get. Leeds are also not the only side interested in signing the player, as several teams have reportedly shown an interest in signing the young midfielder.

West Ham have a large list of transfer targets for midfield and going forward, with reliable club insider ExWHUemployee recently sharing the players in Potter’s thinking.

“The club does have some initial interest in Emanuel Emegha,” stated Ex (via West Ham Way).

“The 6’5 Dutch under 21s international has had a great season for Strasbourg in France and has 7 goals in 13 league appearances. The club started initial enquiries about 4 weeks ago, but it was considered a difficult transfer to complete.

“[Breel] Embolo is a highly rated Swiss international forward who plays for Monaco in France. West Ham have been linked with the forward a number of times in the past.

“His playing style has been likened to Michail Antonio’s, and he is seen as a good longer-term successor to him. Injuries have been a bit of a concern during his career and these would need further exploration via the medical should we chose to go ahead with it.”

The credible club source also says that West Ham’s recent appointment of Kyle Macauley as a transfer chief from Chelsea has delayed any serious movement for players, as Potter is keen to acquire his input.

“Macauley’s appointment has been on the cards since Potter’s appointment and this does explain why there has been little movement so far,” stated Ex again.

“With many of Steidten’s suggestions not being given approval as Potter wanted the input from Macauley. Having already been linked with [Kiernan] Dewsbury-Hall, although he started Chelsea’s game yesterday, and Carney Chukwuemeka, who wasn’t in the squad, these players may also further develop.”

West Ham’s manager is apparently very keen on exploring loan deals for Chukwuemeka and Dewsbury-Hall, but Chelsea’s fringe duo are not the only midfielders on their radar heading into the final stretch of this January window.

West Ham agree deal to sign Ezechiel Banzuzi from OH Leuven

According to Sky, West Ham are closing in on the signing of OH Leuven midfielder Ezechiel Banzuzi.

The Netherlands Under-21 international has impressed in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League, seemingly catching the eyes of West Ham’s scouting team. Banzuzi boasts two goals and five assists from 23 appearances in all competitions, with West Ham now apparently reaching an agreement for the 19-year-old.

“West Ham have agreed a deal with the Belgian club OH Leuven to sign midfielder Ezechiel Banzuzi,” said the broadcaster.

“The agreement is for £10 million up front plus £3 million in potential add-ons. Banzuzi due to fly for a medical in the next 24 hours. This one is on, and it should be completed relatively soon.”

Interestingly, some Belgian media sources have since denied that Banzuzi is on his way to West Ham, so it will be interesting to see how this develops, and it shows how no transfer is officially complete until the player signs on the dotted line.
