Leeds must rue offloading "sensational" talent who’s outperforming Tanaka

After last season’s play-off final heartbreak, every Leeds United supporter will be hoping that the club can ride out the next couple of months of action and secure a return to the Premier League.

Since dropping down to the Championship, the Whites have won a total of 49 matches out of a possible 79, with boss Daniel Farke currently achieving a 62% win rate in the league, promotion form without a doubt.

The German deserves tremendous credit for his ability to build a side capable of competing after dropping down to the second tier, with Luton Town just one example of what can happen, currently sitting in the relegation zone.

Leeds United manager DanielFarkeapplauds fans

His side are currently sitting top of the tree with just 13 games remaining, seven points clear of third place – taking a huge decline in form to prevent them from going one better than last campaign.

It’s safe to say one of the summer additions that arrived at Elland Road during the off-season has made a huge difference, looking to be one of the signings of the season after his bargain transfer.

Ao Tanaka’s stats for Leeds United in 2024/25

During the summer, Leeds decided to buy Japanese midfielder Ao Tanaka from German side Fortuna Düsseldorf for a fee in the region of just £3.5m, arriving as an unknown quantity to the majority of the fanbase.

However, six months on, he’s cemented his place as a regular starter at the heart of the Whites midfield, offering that consistent presence that has contributed to their success in recent weeks.

The 26-year-old’s form has kept numerous stars out of the starting lineup, with the likes of Joe Rothwell having to resort to a place on the bench, whilst Ethan Ampadu has dropped back into a centre-back role.

Tanaka has started each of the last 10 league matches, dating back to Boxing Day, notching two goals and one assist in that time – taking his total to four goal contributions when combined with his first assist against Middlesbrough.

However, despite his first excellent form in Yorkshire, he’s been outperformed by one player who came through the ranks at Elland Road before departing back in 2017.

The former Leeds star who’s outperformed Tanaka in 2024/25

Leeds’ academy has produced numerous high-level talents over the last few years, many of whom have made an impact on the first team before departing for huge sums – allowing Farke to make investments such as Tanaka.

Leeds midfielder Alex Mowatt.

However, some also left for a bargain fee, including midfielder Alex Mowatt who left for fellow Yorkshire outfit Barnsley in a six-figure deal way back in January 2017.

The academy graduate made over 100 appearances for his boyhood club, scoring countless long-range goals, but eventually fell out of favour under previous boss Garry Monk – leading to his subsequent departure.

Fast-forward eight years, the now 30-year-old plies trade for fellow Championship side West Bromwich Albion, subsequently playing a key role in their own ambitions of securing promotion come the end of May.

The Englishman has made 30 appearances in 2024/25 to date, matching or bettering Tanaka in numerous key areas, highlighting the development he’s endured after his move away from the club.

Mowatt, who’s been dubbed “sensational” by former Whites boss Steve Evans, has registered more goals and assists than the current first-team star, offering more of a goal threat with his set-piece delivery.

He’s also averaged more progressive carries per 90, whilst registering more shot-creating actions, highlighting his attacking qualities in the box-to-box role he currently operates in.

Whilst Tanaka is undeniably known for his defensive abilities, Mowatt has averaged more clearances per 90, also winning more of the tackles he’s entered – showcasing his talents at both ends of the pitch.

At the time, it was disappointing to see such a promising youngster depart for such a cheap fee, even more so now given his rise away from Elland Road.

He could’ve been the perfect partner next to Tanaka at the base of Farke’s midfield, adding that depth to further bolster their chances of ending their two-year Premier League exile.

However, it remains a case of what could’ve been for Mowatt with his boyhood side, demonstrating what they could’ve had if they decided to keep hold of him rather than sell him on the cheap.

Netherlands braced for their biggest test as they take on India

Kumble: ‘Not fair’ to leave Ashwin or Axar out against Netherlands

Big PictureThursday will be the first instance of India and Netherlands contesting in a T20 international. While India will enter as clear favourites, they will also be the first to point out the danger that Scott Edwards’ team poses. Netherlands are the only Associates in the Super 12s. They have worked hard to earn their place and now their players want to enjoy playing alongside the big boys, a long-cherished dream. India, Pakistan and South Africa are in their group, and the Dutch want to ensure they push themselves to create an upset.Exposure – that has been the catchphrase Associate coaches and players have holding up outside the gates of the ICC and bigger countries. Playing better teams will make them better has been the punch line. And Netherlands have proved that this season: in 2022 they have played ODI series against England, New Zealand, Pakistan, West Indies and Afghanistan along with the twin T20Is against New Zealand as well as the T20 World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe before arriving in Australia.Related

India not looking to rest players, says bowling coach Mhambrey

Equipped with that experience, Netherlands believed they could beat Bangladesh in their first Super 12 match on Monday and nearly achieved that aim, if not for a couple of unnecessary run-outs, the reason behind the eventual nine-run defeat. Netherlands know India are on a whole other level and on an almighty high after a dramatic win against Pakistan. While their bowlers have executed the plans every match, Netherlands’ batting has been a virtual one-man show named Max O’Dowd. He needs support from Vikramjit Singh, Colin Ackermann, Tom Cooper and Edwards. The Netherlands captain could tell his players, ‘we have nothing to lose so let’s just enjoy’. Such an attitude, Paul van Meerkeren, Netherlands’ strike bowler, said, has the potential to help players raise the performance bar. And given their history of shocking big teams at T20 World Cups – England in 2009 and 2014 – India will want to be on high alert.Bas de Leede has been turning a lot of heads at the T20 World Cup•AFP/Getty Images

Netherlands LLWWLIn the spotlightAs a captain Rohit Sharma has been loud, clear and fearless. He is one of the best tacticians in the game and is more than capable of thinking on the fly too. But Rohit the batter has been flying low recently: in his last five T20Is, Rohit has scored just 64 runs including two ducks at a strike rate of 103. This dip in form is in contrast to the stroke-filled 46 he hit against Australia in the rain-shortened match in Nagpur which earned him the Player-of-the-Match award. His last fifty came in a losing cause, seven matches ago, against Sri Lanka, in the Asia Cup. Rohit knows he needs to dictate with the bat and show consistency.Multiple World Cup-winner Ricky Ponting likes to keep an eye on young talent and he thinks Netherlands allrounder Bas de Leede has something special about him. Ponting feels de Leede has the tools to grow bigger, and his local BBL team Hobart Hurricanes could be thinking about having him on their roster. Other T20 franchise scouts have also tracked de Leede, who was recently picked up by MI Emirates for the inaugural season of the International League T20, starting in the UAE from January 2023. De Leede, who is 22, was also Player of the Match in Netherlands’ two victories in the first round of this World Cup and their second-highest run-maker in the World Cup Qualifiers that preceded it.Team newsWith just one left-hander in the Netherlands’ top eight, India could be tempted to bring in Yuzvendra Chahal, but their bowling coach Paras Mhambrey pointed out on Wednesday that they prefer the balance R Ashwin brings to their batting and may continue playing with him.India (possible): 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 KL Rahul, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5 Hardik Pandya, 6 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 7 Axar Patel, 8 Mohammed Shami, 9 R Ashwin/ Yuzvendra Chahal, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Arshdeep SinghIndia are coming off a massing emotional high from their last game•ICC via Getty Images

Netherlands, too, are unlikely to tinker but remain concerned by the injury to Roelof van der Merwe. So it is fair to expect runs to flow once again. There was some threat of rain, but it looks pretty clear on match eve.Stats and trivia Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene is the only batter to have scored 1000-plus runs in T20 World Cups. Jayawardene scored 1016 runs in 31 innings across five World Cups. But that record is set to be surpassed by Kohli, who is 73 runs adrift of the 1000-run mark. Kohli, who is playing his fifth T20 World Cup, is currently the third-highest run-maker, but has the highest average 84.3 (min. seven innings played) alongside 11 half-centuries (a tournament record). Oh, and the SCG is his favourite venue when it comes to T20Is as no batter has scored more than his 236 runs which have been cracked at an average of nearly 79 and a strike rate of 146. Van Meekeren needs one more wicket to go past Pieter Seelaar to become Netherlands’ leading T20 wicket-taker. Currently, van Meekeren has 58 wickets in 52 innings with an average of 21.5 and economy rate of 6.9Quotes”The discussion we always had was every game in a tournament like this is important. Yes, the first game [was against Pakistan and] we knew the hype around it. We knew it’s always going to be a high intensity and big clash, but having such games done and dusted in the first phase itself, it’s good. Had this game been maybe the third or fourth game, it would really sometimes take that effect on the following games, but having this game out of our group, it’s good.”
“Yeah, it’s huge. You always dream of playing World Cups, and the SCG is one of the most famous grounds in the world. And then add in you’re playing against arguably one of the best teams in the world, yes, it’s pretty surreal. The boys are looking forward to it.”

Chelsea sold dream Jackson replacement who’s scored 98 goals since leaving

Chelsea currently sit sixth in the Premier League, having scored 47 goals in 25 games, making them the fifth highest in the division this season, averaging 58.6% possession, which is the second-highest in the league and taking 16 shots per game, ranking fourth in this metric in the division.

Enzo Maresca’s side have generated the second-highest xG in the Premier League this season, with 51.79 xG generated in their 25 league games, only Liverpool having more with 63.21 xG. However, whilst their xG generation is high, the Blues conversion rate is one of the lowest in the league.

A big part of that is Nicolas Jackson’s recent injury, along with the lack of clinical finishing at the top end of the pitch. Maresca’s side have often fashioned high xG chances this season, squandering them and therefore negatively affecting their chances of turning performances into points.

Nicolas Jackson's injury woes

Chelsea signed Jackson in the 2023/24 summer transfer window, with the Senegal striker joining the Blues for a fee of around £32m.

Since his arrival, the 23-year-old has made 68 appearances for the club, scoring 26 goals, providing 11 assists and totaling 5,312 minutes played.

Jackson has had a patchy season under Maresca, starting in red-hot form, netting eight times in his first 13 Premier League games this season, before going on a poor run of form, only scoring once in his last ten league games.

Nicolas Jackson and Enzo Fernandez

With Jackson now expected to be out until around April, and Marc Guiu also out injured, Chelsea are without a natural number nine – something the squad is clearly crying out for, and perhaps something that should have been thought about when making sales.

Chelsea already sold a potential Jackson replacement

After spending some time on loan before his permanent sale, Chelsea agreed the sale of Álvaro Morata in 2019 to Atlético Madrid, with the Spanish club paying £58.3m for the striker.

Since leaving the Blues, initially on loan in 2019, Morata has scored 98 goals for a multitude of clubs, including Atlético Madrid, Juventus, AC Milan and Galatasaray.

When comparing the two strikers’ underlying metrics this season, you can see how Morata would have offered something slightly different, offering some extra aerial threat to the side and overachieving his xG performance, compared to Jackson who is underperforming his xG.

The age dynamic between the two wouldn’t have been an issue either, as the 32-year-old Morata would have offered experience to the Chelsea side, which is lacking in this department, making for a healthy and competitive dynamic between the two.

Alvaro Morata

Whilst it is easy to judge with hindsight, Chelsea could have used a more experienced striker who is willing to rotate with Jackson, which could have added a new dynamic to the team in certain games, and helped to cover for injuries such as the recent ones to Jackson and Guiu.

As it is, Maresca may be forced to utilise Christopher Nkunku has a makeshift number nine, or instead look to the academy…

Australia runaway favourites, but West Indies are capable of putting up a big fight

But there is the matter of the lights and the pink ball – Australia have a perfect ten-in-ten record in day-night Tests

Big pictureThe Frank Worrell trophy remains in Australia’s hands, as it has since 1995, and there was hardly any doubt it would be that way although they were made to work for their victory in Perth. It is that fact, the fight West Indies showed, which offers hope that the now traditional day-night Test in Adelaide may not be a walkover for Australia. However, it will only be a contest if West Indies find a way to break through Australia’s batting. Six wickets was the sum total of their efforts at Optus Stadium and a few of those came at times of little consequence. The one glimmer was the spell from Alzarri Joseph to Marnus Labuschagne, but such bursts have to translate into wickets.Related

Still, the performance of captain Kraigg Brathwaite should be inspiring – his second-innings century was worth a debate about being his best in Test cricket – and the debut of Tagenarine Chanderpaul was highly encouraging. If others can follow their lead then there is the basis of being competitive, although the day-night element of this game throws up new challenges. One byproduct of the fight shown by West Indies in the opening Test is that already eyes are being drawn towards the workload of Australia’s quicks. Pat Cummins has been ruled out with the quad strain he picked up, which means, for the second year running, he misses the Adelaide Test with Steven Smith taking on the captaincy. Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood also racked up the overs. For that duo, it’s not so much this outing that is the concern, but the fact that Australia’s entire Test summer is crammed into a little more than five weeks. It would, however, be one of the bigger upsets if West Indies – who themselves have a number of injury concerns – were able to level the series. In a way, though, it’s about the strides they can make in a series such as this. “Stay in the fight as long as possible,” assistant coach Roddy Estwick said. Australia should win, and probably will, but West Indies can make it as tough as possible for them.Recent formAustralia WLWWD
West Indies LWWWDIn the spotlightDavid Warner will feel he missed out in Perth. After dragging on early on the opening day and then watching Labuschagne and Smith pile up 200s, he got himself a base in the second innings before edging Roston Chase to short leg. Barring injury, his 100th Test will arrive against South Africa at the MCG and his future in the format remains very much in his hands, but an average of 22.78 in 2022 is lean. On a ground where he averages 76.86, albeit not all of that against the pink ball, he will hope for a substantial return.Alzarri Joseph raised the pitch in the first Test with a hostile spell on the fourth day•Getty Images

Even if Alzarri Joseph had not overstepped against Labuschagne it would not have been enough to change the game, but his spell on the fourth day did raise the question of what could have been, or what could be. He was said to be under the weather during an underwhelming first-innings display and that it would be unfair to judge him on that, so instead remember the pace and fire of his later spell. His career-best remains 3 for 33 but the belief in the team is that a breakthrough haul is close.Team newsScott Boland returns in place of the injured Cummins as the one change in the Australia XI.Australia 1 David Warner, 2 Usman Khawaja, 3 Marnus Labuschagne, 4 Steven Smith (capt), 5 Travis Head, 6 Cameron Green, 7 Alex Carey (wk), 8 Mitchell Starc, 9 Nathan Lyon, 10 Josh Hazlewood, 11 Scott BolandWest Indies will wait until the morning of the game to give their injured players as much time as possible. Kemar Roach (hamstring) and Jayden Seales (knee) are both concerns, which means Marquino Mindley could debut 48 hours after arriving from Jamaica. Kyle Mayers won’t be able to bowl.West Indies (possible) 1 Kraigg Brathwaite (capt), 2 Tagenarine Chanderpaul, 3 Shamarh Brooks, 4 Kyle Mayers, 5 Jermaine Blackwood, 6 Jason Holder, 7 Joshua Da Silva (wk), 8 Roston Chase, 9 Alzarri Joseph, 10 Kemar Roach/Anderson Phillip, 11 Jayden Seales/Marquino MindleyPitch and conditionsIt is expected to be a typical Adelaide day-night pitch. Curator Damien Hough said he had left the standard 8mm of grass on the surface. The cool, damp spring has made preparations tricky, so it remains to be seen how much pace is in the pitch – the drop-in was only put into place last week following a Guns N’ Roses concert. The forecast is set fair and the temperature will warm up on Saturday. “This surface offers a bit to everyone,” Smith said. “There’s a bit of seam, if you bat well you can score runs and it offers some spin. Looks no different this year to the last couple of years.”Kraigg Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul were impressive in the first Test•Getty Images

Stats and trivia Jermaine Blackwood will play his 50th Test Australia have a ten-in-ten record in day-night Tests Nathan Lyon needs one wicket to be the leading bowler in Adelaide, overtaking Shane Warne, while he and Smith need to combine one more time to go ahead of Warne and Mark Taylor as the most successful fielder-bowler combination for Australia. Lyon also needs four wickets for 450 in Tests If Smith scores another hundred, he will equal Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Matthew Hayden on 30Quotes”Bit more time to prepare for this game than last year. That was a bit chaotic. We are in a good place, played some good cricket last week, hopefully we can continue it here and continue our pink-ball form.”
“It’s very inspiring. For a long while we are close friends… he really came and showed that he had that hunger and determination to score that century. As a batting unit we have a lot to learn from that.”

Postecoglou would greatly benefit from his arrival.

Erling Haaland’s eventual winner proved the difference between Ange Postecoglou and Pep Guardiola’s sides, but the former still found positives to take away from the 90 minutes, despite it being their fourteenth top flight loss of the campaign.

“Yeah I think so. First half we were just a little bit too eager to get forward with the ball,” said Postecoglou on Tottenham’s positive second-half against Man City.

“I thought we were really wasteful and when you are (like that) against City it allows them to get into a rhythm of their game. They can pick you off at different times and we just didn’t handle that part of the game well. They scored and had a couple of good chances to get further ahead.

“I certainly felt second half we dominated the game and territory. We were pretty relentless. Much better with the ball and a lot calmer but just missing a goal and ultimately fell short.

“It did look more like us today. At least from my perspective. We were really relentless. We played aggressive football. We took it to a very good opponent. We never tapered off at all. If anything, like you said, bringing the guys on made us stronger towards the end of the game. Disappointing to lose but I think you see the benefit of us being refreshed and going into a game well prepared. That level of performance in the second half, if we can begin to get consistent with that then we will be able to push on.”

Overall, it’s been a disappointing second campaign in charge for Postecoglou, who is relying on a good run in the Europa League to end Tottenham’s 17-year trophy drought.

Preparations are already underway to bolster the squad ahead of next campaign, with Tottenham believed to be targeting a new centre-back this summer.

Tottenham set to attempt move for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

According to CaughtOffside, Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite is on their transfer shortlist in that regard, following the Lilywhites’ repeated shortages at centre-half throughout 2024/2025.

Tottenham are ready to rival Man United in the race for Branthwaite this summer, as per this report, and it is believed even Real Madrid were once pushing to land the England international, though a move failed to materialise.

The 22-year-old will apparently command a price tag of around £70 million, though, so Levy will need to invest heavily in his acquisition. That being said, he currently stands out as one of the country’s most promising centre-backs.

“Branthwaite has been outstanding,” said Jamie Carragher last year. “I think this lad is pretty special. He’s a big part of why Everton in my eyes have a good chance of staying up, him and his partnership with [James] Tarkowski.”
