"If I'm honest" – Ian Wright says he rues Arsenal selling "quality" player

Arsenal legend Ian Wright says that a “quality” player who the club let go really should be in Mikel Arteta’s first team right now, with the pundit “surprised” by just how well he’s doing away from the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal short of forwards after key injuries

A story of Arsenal’s season has been their shortage of key forwards, after serious, long-term injuries to the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka.

"Now" – BBC journalist shares Bukayo Saka return twist out of Arsenal

The England star has been out since before Christmas.

Jesus could even be out of action until 2026, after the Brazilian ruptured his ACL against Man United in the FA Cup, while Havertz’s hamstring injury has ruled him out for the rest of this season.

Some good news for Arteta is that Saka has returned to training and could even feature against Fulham next week, subject to an evaluation by medics, but their shortage of attacking players has even forced midfielder Mikel Merino into an emergency forward role.

While rumours are surrounding the club’s pursuit of a new striker this summer, there are those who wonder whether they should’ve sold young centre-forward Mika Biereth.

The 22-year-old, who Arsenal let go for just £4 million, is enjoying the season of his life. Biereth is currently one of the most prolific strikers in Europe, boasting an excellent 25 goals from 37 appearances across spells at both Sturm Graz and Monaco.

Monaco signed Biereth from Sturm Graz in a £12.5 million deal midway through the campaign, with the Denmark international bagging three separate hat-tricks for them already.

Ian Wright says Mika Biereth should be a first teamer for Arsenal right now

Now, commenting on the “quality” in-form young striker, Wright has suggested that Arsenal made a mistake letting Biereth leave.

“His obsession with scoring goals. He doesn’t care how they go in, he just wants to score. That will always drive and motivate him,” said Wright, in an interview with Get French Football News.

“I have been surprised. Not that I doubt his ability, but normally you give players time to adapt to different structures and new opposition. He has that bit of surprise though, opposition won’t be too familiar with him either. The big test is if he can keep it up once the league is familiar with his game. I’m incredibly proud of him, it’s an amazing record so far and long may it continue. He’s also contributing to the team as a whole. He keeps friends from every club he plays for. That’s the type of character he is.

“If I’m honest it must’ve been something with the plans Arsenal had. Mika should’ve been in and around it at the moment. One of our chats early on was about him showing himself in the preseason for Arsenal and giving it his best go. But he had the bravery to go to Scotland, then Austria and now France and that is what shows he wants to be the best! He has to be playing to prove that. His record speaks for itself. It’s disappointing for Arsenal but on a human level, I’m delighted for him.”

If Biereth continues to build upon his electric form, Monaco will be able to demand far more than the £4 million authorised by Arsenal to let him leave. His value appears set to skyrocket, and given the plethora of shortages in attack, Arteta could really use a player of his ilk right now.

'Dhoni never complained about his knee to anybody'

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan reflects on a successful season and clarifies he wasn’t ‘pacifying’ Jadeja in viral video

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Jun-20237:55

‘Satisfaction of seeing home-grown boy win CSK the title made Dhoni emotional’

MS Dhoni didn’t consider missing a single IPL game this season, even though it meant playing with a heavily strapped left knee in a cast. The former India captain, who led Chennai Super Kings to a fifth IPL crown, has since undergone surgery in Mumbai earlier this month and is “comfortable, happy and recovering.””We never asked him things like ‘do you want to play or do you want to sit out.’ If he can’t, he would’ve told us straightaway,” CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan told ESPNcricinfo Tamil. “We knew it was a struggle for him to play, but his commitment to the team, his leadership and how the team benefits everyone knows. From that perspective, you have to appreciate him.”Till the final, he never complained about his knee to anybody. Though everyone knew, and you would’ve seen him struggling while running, he never complained even once. After the final, he said, ‘okay, I’ll have a surgery.’ He’s finished his surgery, he’s quite happy, he’s recovering.”Related

Dhoni vows to return for another IPL season if his body allows it

Jadeja finally gets his Chepauk love

At the post-final presentation, Dhoni agreed retiring after winning the title would be the “best time”, but has vowed to return for “at least” one more season if his body allows. This will be a “gift” to his fans even if it means putting in “tough” yards for another nine months. That stance remains intact, with Dhoni set to begin his rehab soon after three weeks of post-surgery rest.”Actually, he told us immediately after the final is over he’ll fly to Mumbai, have surgery and go back to Ranchi for rehab,” Viswanathan said. “In Mumbai, after Ruturaj’s wedding [on June 4], I visited him. It was a courtesy call. He’s quite comfortable. He said he’ll rest for three weeks and then start his rehab. And like he said, he’s not going to play until January-February. We don’t need to remind him about all that.2:14

Kasi Viswanathan: ‘No issues with Jadeja at CSK’

“He knows what to do, how to go about it, so we aren’t going to ask him ‘what are you going to do, how’ etc. He will inform us on his own. Whatever he’s doing, he’ll call first and inform only Mr N Srinivasan, not anyone else. Factually, he’ll be straightforward with him. From him, we’ll get the information that this is what he’s doing. It’s been this way since 2008. That’s how it will continue.”Viswanathan also brushed aside the chatter of any friction between Ravindra Jadeja and Dhoni. Last year, there were murmurs that all was not well between the two after Jadeja was removed as captain mid-season. Rumuors intensified when Jadeja left the camp with an injury. This season, Jadeja is also believed to have been irked by chants of “we want Dhoni!” every time he walked in to bat. Then there were visuals of Jadeja and Dhoni in an animated chat after CSK’s clash in Delhi, where Jadeja finished with figures of 0 for 50 off four overs. Soon after, Viswanathan himself was seen having a long discussion with Jadeja. Then there were some cryptic tweets on “karma” and some straightforward ones, like appreciation from sponsors but not fans.”As far as Jadeja is concerned, he bowled superbly,” Viswanathan said. “While batting, our line-up of Ruturaj, Conway, Moeen, Rahane, with the results, whenever he [Jadeja] went in to bat, he had 5-10 balls left. In such situations, it can or can’t click sometimes. But the thing is he also knew Dhoni was to come in next, and he himself would get just 2-3 balls sometimes. In such situations whenever he went in, the crowd used to welcome Dhoni. In a way, he may have felt hurt. Any player for that matter may have had that pressure. But he didn’t complain about it even though he put out a tweet.Kasi Viswanathan dismissed reports of a rift between Dhoni and Jadeja•BCCI

“It’s all part and parcel of the game. After the last game, people saw videos online and assumed I’m pacifying Jadeja, but it wasn’t like that. I was talking to him about the match, what he did. We didn’t have any other discussion. Everyone knows in a team environment, what happens in the dressing room, no one is privy to it outside. We don’t have any problem. He always had high respect for Dhoni. After the final also, he said, ‘I dedicate this knock to Dhoni.’ That is the kind of respect he has for MS.”What were Dhoni’s first words to him after the final was won?”He said, ‘look, the fifth title has been delivered.’ It’s a big relief,” Viswanathan said. “He praised Jadeja for the effort and confidence he showed. It [Ahmedabad] was like a home ground for him [Jadeja]. It was very satisfying. Everyone knows how Dhoni has brought up Jadeja from 2012 at CSK. He has the satisfaction of seeing a home-grown boy deliver the title for CSK.”

Sussex rue absent cutting edge as Glamorgan go large in rearguard of overkill proportions

Neser century caps mammoth second-innings 737, as Robinson rests ankle injury as ‘precaution’

Glamorgan 123 and 737 (Carlson 192, Labuschagne 138, Neser 123) drew with Sussex 481 (Coles 138, Smith 89, Haines 58) and 1 for 0The sight of Ollie Robinson leaving the Sussex dressing-rooms on crutches and with his left foot in a protective boot summed up the stark turnaround in this match at Hove. Robinson’s celebrations were unrestrained on day one when he removed Marnus Labuschagne with his first ball to the Australian, as Glamorgan were blown away in 37.4 overs. But the visitors batted out more than six sessions second time around to record their second-highest first-class total and fight the game to a standstill.Glamorgan coach, Matthew Maynard, praised his side’s resilience after they overcame a first-innings deficit of 358, with Australia allrounder Michael Neser becoming the third centurion of the innings. After Robinson’s opening salvo, most of the pre-Ashes points-scoring in this match has come from the other side. “He’s contributed really well with the bat this year for us, on top of his outstanding bowling efforts,” Maynard said of Neser. “To top it with a hundred, delighted for him.”Sussex, who recorded their fifth consecutive draw to remain second in Division Two, were left more than a little battered by the effort. Robinson had been off the field since before lunch on day three due to an ankle injury that could affect his England availability and the captain, Cheteshwar Pujara, was absent on Sunday with a stiff neck (although India shouldn’t need to worry about his readiness for the World Test Championship final). Three bowlers – Ari Karvelas, Jack Carson and James Coles – bowled more than 30 overs, with Carson sending down 54 for figures of 2 for 216.An attack missing the services of Robinson was perhaps always going to struggle to take 20 wickets for only the second time this season. They got there in the end, by which time Glamorgan had amassed 737 – the fifth-highest second-innings score in history – and a lead of 379 with nominally 14 overs left in the game. Neser scored the third first-class hundred of his career, and first for Glamorgan, the mark achieved with a mighty slog-sweep for six off the bowling of his Australia team-mate Steven Smith.Smith, bowling offbreaks, picked up a maiden Sussex wicket – exuberantly celebrated after a fine one-handed catch on the boundary rope by sub fielder Sean Hunt – and eventually yorked Neser to bring the innings to a close. Cricket being cricket, the timing of the dismissal meant that Sussex still had to come out and bat for an over before hands could be shaken on a draw, with Labuschagne bounding eagerly through six deliveries of medium-pace before signing off from county duties.Glamorgan’s monumental effort eclipsed by more than 150 runs their previous highest second-innings score – made at Newport in 1939, against a Gloucestershire team for whom Wally Hammond chalked up 302. Emrys Davies was the bulwark for Glamorgan on that occasion, making a career-best 287 not out. Here the Welsh hero was Kiran Carlson, who also made his highest first-class score – albeit only bettering the previous mark by one run – with notable support from Glamorgan’s two Australian overseas players. As epic rearguards go, you could scarcely ask for more – and after Carlson went early, adding just five runs to his overnight 187, it was no surprise that Glamorgan were uninterested in making a sporting declaration. All that work to go home with 2 points? No thanks. “We were never safe until quite late in the day,” Maynard said. In the end, their second-innings effort outstripped their first by more than 600 runs, which in the language of the Tour de France, that great sporting endurance test, was rather like crashing your bike down at sea level in Bayonne only to then beast your way to the front of the peloton in time to summit the Col du Tourmalet. All results remained theoretically possible at the start of the day, with Glamorgan 141 in front and Sussex hoping to burgle five wickets and set up a chase. They managed two in the morning session, and two more during the afternoon, but the game was already drifting towards somnolence. Smith was called on to bowl – perhaps imitating Labuschagne’s recent tinkering by eschewing his usual legbreaks – and then it was on to the collector’s items: Tom Alsop’s left-arm tweak and the optimistic lob-ups of Ali Orr, for the first time in senior cricket. The day took on a vaguely hallucinatory quality, as the players went through their motions. It brought to mind a quote from Joseph O’Neill’s , which describes “the beauty of cricket played on a lawn of appropriate dimensions, where the white-clad ring of infielders, swanning figures on the vast oval, again and again converge in unison toward the batsman and again and again scatter back to their starting points, a repetition of pulmonary rhythm, as if the field breathed through its luminous visitors.” Except, by this point, we were all waiting for it to take its final breath.Sussex were left to rue having dropped Carlson on 3 midway through the third morning – although given even the Glamorgan No. 11 Jamie McIlroy made a career-best (11 not out), perhaps the combination of surface and opposition would have proved unyielding either way. Five Glamorgan batters faced more than 100 balls, while each of the bottom three batted for more than an hour in support of Neser.Paul Farbrace, who described Robinson’s moon boot as “precautionary”, said that Sussex’s bowling in the second innings had not been consistent enough, and confirmed the club are set to bring in a second overseas bowler for the next block of Championship games, with Pujara and Smith both departing for international duty.”We are getting our bonus points for bowling a team out once, but we’re not capable of doing it twice, and that’s an area we’ve got to improve on,” Farbrace said. “Instead of finishing this little period of Championship games with one win in six, I think we should be finishing it with at least three wins. But we’ve not been good enough to do that.”

Early start, early finish for the BBL might see overseas players stay longer

The Sheffield Shield season will run from October 3, 2023, until the final on March 21-25, 2024. There will be six Shield rounds before the first Test but the last of those six games begins on November 28 to accommodate the BBL starting earlier on December 7. That may mean that Australia’s multi-format players are likely to go without a red-ball game before the Pakistan Test series with the 50-over World Cup set to run from October 5 until November 19 in India. Australia are scheduled to then stay in India and play a five-match T20I series straight after the completion of the World Cup, prior to the home Test series against Pakistan.Players, support staff and management celebrate another Western Australia title•Getty Images

The Marsh Cup 50-over competition will remain as an eight-game tournament rather than a full 10-round home and away season with some matches also played at neutral venues. The majority of the Marsh Cup will be played prior to the BBL with each state playing their final two matches after the BBL has finished in late January. The Marsh Cup final will be played on February 25.The WNCL final will be played the day before on February 24. The women’s domestic season will begin on September 22 at Cricket New South Wales’ new facility, Cricket Central at Sydney Olympic Park. The venue will host WNCL, WBBL, and Marsh Cup matches this summer as well as its maiden first-class game with NSW to host Queensland in the opening round of the Sheffield Shield season. Adelaide Oval will also host a day-night WNCL match between South Australia and Victoria on January 29 as part of CA’s push to get more domestic women’s matches on the bigger international venues. There will also be a Governor General’s XI match against South Africa’s women’s team on January 24 at North Sydney Oval ahead of the women’s multiformat seven-match series against Australia starting on January 27.

Lees, Clark hundreds help Durham into position of strength

Fifties for Borthwick, Robinson and de Leede as home side ease towards big first-innings lead

Alex Lees and Graham Clark scored centuries to manoeuvre Durham into a match-winning position against Sussex on day two of their LV= Insurance County Championship Division Two clash at Seat Unique Riverside.Lees continued his outstanding form this season with a knock of 103 from 155 balls to provide the foundation of the innings, notching his fifth Championship century of the season. He shared a stand of 146 with Scott Borthwick, who notched a gritty fifty in support of the left-hander.Clark capitalised on a weary Sussex bowling attack late in the day with a flurry of boundaries to notch his second hundred of the term. Ollie Robinson and Bas de Leede compounded Durham’s position of strength with half-centuries of their own. At the close, the home side moved into a dominant 158-run lead with five wickets remaining with Clark and de Leede still at the crease. In need of early wickets to shift the momentum of the game, Sussex did not have to wait long for the breakthrough as Aristides Karvelas found Michael Jones’ outside edge from the fourth ball of the day. But, Lees settled into his rhythm to counterattack for the hosts, taking three boundaries from Karvelas’ second over. The former England opener eased his way to his fifty from 72 balls, featuring two impressive strikes against Karvelas and Jack Carson that cleared the rope. Borthwick offered a reassuring complement at the other end, although he was not quite as fluent. Borthwick survived an inside edge and a nick through the slip cordon before finding his timing to post his third fifty of the campaign.Lees and Borthwick shared a stand worth 146 for the second wicket before Carson found bounce out of the surface to prise out the Durham skipper for 56. Jaydev Unadkat then claimed the important wicket of David Bedingham, who picked out square-leg with a loose shot.Lees remained unfettered at the other end and continued his outstanding Championship form by registering another century, handing the England selectors yet another reminder of his talent. However, he was becalmed after reaching three figures through a spell of accurate bowling from Unadkat. The introduction of Carson brought the mistake from the left-hander as he steered a slog-sweep straight to Hudson-Prentice on the leg-side boundary.Robinson worked to keep Durham in charge of the contest, having not played a competitive game in six weeks after being left out of Northern Superchargers’ line-up for their Hundred matches. The wicketkeeper showed no signs of rust and produced a fluent knock of 67 from 66 balls, including 10 fours and one maximum before he was pinned lbw by Carson.Durham still had work ahead of them to turn a solid position into a match-winning opportunity. Clark and de Leede absorbed pressure initially from Carson and James Coles before the arrival of the new ball. The duo then pressed the accelerator to push the hosts into a 100-run lead producing a flurry of boundaries to punish an ailing attack, adding 77 from the opening 13 overs from the new ball.Clark earned his reward for a solid defence and brought up his fourth half-century of the term, while de Leede was not far behind him in recording his third fifty, sharing an unbeaten stand of 159.Clark upped the ante in the closing overs and surged through the nineties with three successive boundaries to record a deserved ton, capping an excellent day for the hosts in their bid to secure promotion.
