Newcastle fans fuming with Ayoze Perez’s comments

After arriving from Spanish side CD Tenerife, Ayoze Perez enjoyed a fairly impressive spell in his time at Newcastle.

The versatile forward played 195 times for the Magpies, scoring 48 goals and providing a further 17 assists. He was there during the campaign Newcastle spent in the Championship, and was a permanent fixture in the side as they set about trying to cement their place in the Premier League too.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

But the Spaniard made the switch to top-flight rivals Leicester last summer in a deal reported to be worth around £30m. Now, speaking to Sky Sports, Perez has admitted that whilst he stills holds affection for Newcastle, he made the move to the Foxes to join their project.

He said: “I just wish them (Newcastle) the best. They are a special team for myself. It was a very important part of my career. Leicester is also building up a great project. It’s a great team which is developing. So, in the end, it was an easy decision. If you ask me today if it was the right one, I would say so.”

After hearing what Perez had to say, Newcastle fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on their former star.

One Newcastle fan in particular meanwhile suggested that Perez may now regret his decision to leave, perhaps referencing the fact the Magpies are set for a takeover.

Unsurprisingly, some Newcastle supporters don’t seem to be the biggest fans of Perez now.

But the Magpies got a fairly decent chunk of money for a player who has only reached double figures in a league campaign just once in his entire professional career.

So whilst they may not be happy with his exit, Newcastle still did fairly well out of it.

Sissoko has key role for Tottenham v Dortmund

[ad_pod ]

Moussa Sissoko has a key role to play as Tottenham Hotspur take on Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

The France international has risen to prominence this season and his displays have made him one of the most indispensable players in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.

On the chalkboard

Sissoko has gone from being something of a flop at Spurs to a key member of Pochettino’s starting line-up.

This season, the Frenchman has played 28 times in all competitions and, though he is yet to score, he has proved vital in terms of setting the tone of Spurs’ press and regularly galloping through midfield, striding past challenges at will.

His display against Leicester City at the weekend, in a 3-1 win, was evidence of this.

Per WhoScored, Sissoko completed four dribbles against the Foxes, more than any other player on the pitch, and also enjoyed a pass completion rate of 90%, completing 45 of 50 attempted passes.

His was a tireless display, as he also made two key passes, along with one tackle. In total, Sissoko touched the ball 70 times, the second-most of any Spurs player. Harry Winks led the way with 101 touches.

He is fast becoming one of the most trusted players in the Spurs XI, regularly given the ball when Spurs are in need of a quick transition.

Against Dortmund, then, he will be key.

Turning defence into attack

Spurs faced Dortmund last season, too, playing them twice in the group stages.

Pochettino’s men won both games, but were particularly impressive at Wembley, running out 3-1 winners in a game where they regularly ceded possession to Dortmund.

Per BBC, Spurs had just 32% possession in the game, opting to soak up pressure before bursting forward on the break. A Son Heung-Min strike plus a Harry Kane brace gave them victory.

A similar gameplan is likely to be employed on Wednesday, particularly with the likes of Dele Alli, Kane and Danny Rose ruled out of the game.

If Pochettino opts to allow Dortmund to have the ball, Sissoko’s rangy runs will be vital in turning defence into attack and moving Spurs up the pitch.

Of course, Sissoko will also have to be precise in his distribution if Spurs are to capitalise on his forays forward but history suggests he will not find that a problem.

If he repeats his performance against Leicester, Dortmund will be running scared – and Tottenham’s hopes of progressing to the next round of the Champions League will receive a key boost.

Leeds United are planning for a homegrown future

Leeds United are preparing for the future after the club pinned down 19-year-old starlets Robbie Gotts and Clarke Oduor on new long-term contracts.

The club announced on Saturday that Gotts had signed a new three-and-a-half-year deal, which would keep the defender at Elland Road until 2022, before confirming on Sunday that winger Oduor had extended his current deal to the summer of 2020.

The new contracts are coming at a big and important time for the club, who are hoping to be competing in the Premier League next season, should they earn promotion.

Despite suffering a dip in performances and results lately, Leeds have been superb this season and manager Marcelo Bielsa has relied on quite a few of the youngsters to step up at crucial stages to help the team get over the line.

Gotts and Oduor have been regulars in Carlos Corberan’s u-23 side and have been key to the team’s success this season.

So much so that they have both been in Bielsa’s matchday squads at times this season.

Gotts has been on the bench for a number of games this campaign, while Oduor made his debut for the Whites in their FA Cup defeat at Queens Park Rangers at the start of the year.

The penning down of these two exciting young talents shows that the club is already trying to strengthen Bielsa’s squad if they are going to play top-flight football next season.

Corberan’s u-23 team has been in excellent form this season and is currently on top of the Professional Development League North, offering Bielsa a lot of depth for the first-team squad.

Should Leeds indeed play in the Premier League next season, then the club’s administration will be adamant on keeping their younger players at the club to help them compete with the big clubs.

Celtic fans annihilate Jeremy Toljan on Twitter for poor performance versus Hearts

[ad_pod ]

Neil Lennon’s second stint as Celtic manager got off to a good start as his side emerged 2-1 victors over 10-man Hearts, although in no small part thanks to Odsonne Edouard, who scored the winner in the dying minutes after coming off the bench.

James Forrest gave the visitors the lead just after the half-hour mark before Hearts’ Jamie Brandon was sent for an early shower after flailing an arm in the face of Hoops right-back Jeremy Toljan.

The German, though, surely cannot blame the incident for the performance he produced thereafter. The defender, on loan from Borussia Dortmund, struggled to cause the Hearts defence any problems down the right and, on several occasions, his cross didn’t get past the first man.

Check out a Celtic fan’s viewpoint on last night’s last-gasp win over Hearts in the video below…

Fortunately for the speedster, Scott Brown was on hand to deliver late on – the Scotsman teed up Edouard for the decisive goal on his return to the starting XI.

Tottenham fans split over Eriksen’s future

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Tottenham fans have been discussing the future of Christian Eriksen, and they are completely split as the playmaker continues to stay silent over contract talks.

This could be an awfully long summer for Spurs fans, as it seems practically inevitable that the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli will be linked with moves away, as well as manager Mauricio Pochettino.

On top of having to put up with all that, fans may face the prospect of losing two key players for relatively small transfer fees, due to the contract situations of both Toby Alderweireld and Eriksen.

Both players will enter the final year of the current deal this summer, meaning it’s only a matter of time before Europe’s elite come calling.

While some may consider Alderweireld to be the more polished and complete product, Eriksen is three years younger than the Belgian international, so would represent a significantly better investment for buying clubs.

The 27 year-old has scored 63 goals and provided 81 assists in 261 Spurs showings, but some fans are ready to cash in this summer.

Other are desperate for the Dane to stay, and either way you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Everton were rejected by Lyon star Lucas Tousart, but it’s been a blessing in disguise

[ad_pod ]

According to France Football, Everton were rejected by Lyon midfielder Lucas Tousart in the January transfer window, who also rejected a proposal from Zenit St Petersburg, which helped keep Idrissa Gueye at the club.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Toffees were extremely keen to add the 21-year-old midfielder to their ranks, as he is a player who has impressed massively for the Ligue 1 side.

French giants Paris Saint-Germain had Gueye in their sights throughout the January transfer window, and saw a £25m bid swiftly rejected as Everton were adamant that the Senegalese international would not be sold.

In this era of ‘big 6’ dominance, has finishing 7th become as good as winning a trophy? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…

Gueye did in fact hand in a transfer request to try and force the move to the French capital, and it is believed that if Tousart had agreed to sign for the Merseyside-based club, the former Aston Villa star would’ve been allowed to link up with the Parisians.

A blessing in disguise

Before the whole PSG transfer saga, Gueye was visibly not performing to the standards that fans of Everton and the Premier League have come to expect from the 29-year-old.

However, since he was forced to stay at Goodison Park, he has knuckled down and rediscovered the form that attracted one of Europe’s biggest clubs in the first place, and appears to have a newfound motivation.

His heroic performance in the 3-0 away win over Cardiff, along with his tidy showing in the Merseyside derby, helped Everton keep two successive clean sheets.

It is almost as if the Senegalese midfielder knows that the Parisians can sign almost any player that they want to in world football given their ridiculous resources, so must maintain the high quality of his performances in order to keep them interested.

Whilst that may be bad news for the Toffees come the summer, Gueye’s tireless efforts are certainly a positive for them right now.
