Premier League Predictions: City to cement title ambitions

With all the Wayne Rooney chat this week you might have actually forgotten that there is some football to be played in the Premier League at the weekend and that means it’s time for some predictions from the country’s top footy journo’s. The stand out game is Manchester City v Arsenal, and although there was some disagreement, a home win for City at Eastland has been predicted. Elsewhere, home wins have been predicted for Birmingham, Chelsea, West Brom and West Ham, while maybe surprisingly the concensus is that Sam Allardyce’s Blackburn will hold Liverpool to a draw at Anfield. Take note fantasy football players!

Get the full list of predictions here.

Here are Danny Fullbrook’s Premier League predictions for the weekend, and the Daily Star writer can’t look past a home win at Stamford Bridge for unstoppable Chelsea against Wolves:

Manchester City v Arsenal: Arsenal are confident, and with two days’ extra rest, which should be enough to earn a point.

Has Roy Hodgson let his talisman down?

How many excuses does Fernando Torres need this season. To start with, Roy Hodgson put his form down to the niggling hamstring injury he suffered in the World Cup Final in July. Then he moved on from this and excused Torres’ early season form by arguing the striker was suffering from a World Cup hangover. Now Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has waded in and blamed the service of the Liverpool players.

Is Fernando Torres being let down by his team mates or is he being let down by his managers outdated and defensive squad balance.

The Guardian on Tuesday, reported that Liverpool Goalkeeper, Pepe Reina has blamed Fernando Torres’ poor form on the lack of quality service the Liverpool team have offered him so far this term.

”I don’t think we have been assisting him like we should, particularly in the last few weeks. He has not been able to do anything at all. We know he is the type of player that can win a game just like that, but we can’t expect him to keep doing it on his own. We have to feed him in. That’s the point.” Said the Spanish goalkeeper.

In all fairness to Torres this has been a fair point. Liverpool have a lack of creativity in midfield and a lack of quality wide men. Christian Poulsen and Lucas Leiva have their role in the squad but moving the ball forward quickly, and supporting Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres isn’t their strength. If Torres is out of form he will obviously become an isolated figure up front. With this lack of service, the striker becomes frustrated – and this is what we have seen this season. If Liverpool had a better passer playing in centre midfield the ball would be released to Gerrard at better and more positive opportunities. Ever since the sale of Xabi Alonso, Liverpool have struggled in this side of of their game. Liverpool need to invest in more creative players or the problems we have seen at the start of the season will continue.

[divider]

Are Pepe Reina’s comments an indication that the squad want to be more creative and more positive. Against Blackburn they were and if it had not been for Paul Robinson it could have four or five in the first half. Liverpool played with the shackles off but will this be a flash in the pan. Is Torres’ poor form due to the way Hodgson has set his team up this season.

Liverpool are playing a new style, a style that doesn’t immediately suit Fernando Torres. Under Benitez Liverpool pressed higher up the pitch and attacking situations happened a lot closer to Torres. When Liverpool won 4-1 at Old Trafford this was the key to the victory. Pressing Michael Carrick and releasing Torres and Gerrard early, in far more favourable attacking situations. Under Hodgson Liverpool defend deeper, allowing teams to get men behind the ball when their attacks break down. The slow pace of Liverpool’s play so far this season is clearly affecting Torres’ game. Against Blackburn on Sunday, Torres looked sharper because the quality of  ball played to him was better and Liverpool got men around him early. If Liverpool can continue to do this, Torres’ form will pick up.

The reality is Hodgson will not change his tactics. The manager will continue to play without creative influence and devoid of pace and Torres will be left to feed on scraps. Liverpool fans have voiced their concerns on the way Torres has been utilised this season, and the lack of support for him. On his day he is one of the best strikers around but he needs support if he is going to get back on form. Fernando Torres has had a lot of excuses this season but if Hodgson gives Liverpool the freedom to get forward, Torres will not need such excuses.

The fear for Liverpool fans must be that if Roy Hodgson does not change his tactics to suit Fernando Torres, how long can the Spaniard last it out at Anfield. Hodgson needs to look at Sunday’s performance and realise this is the way Liverpool need to play. If he can change the balance of the team to suit this – Liverpool will no doubt be moving up the table in the near future.

Arsene Wenger is a man with an eye for talent. His managerial career has seen him hit upon some of football’s greatest bargains. Could Chelsea do worse but put faith in their own?

When Roman Abramovic took control of Chelsea in the summer of 2003, he had a vision for constructing an empire. A dynasty. Such were the funds available to then Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri that many considered this vision to be a formality.

In football, however, nothing is forever. Abramovich’s personal wealth, whilst still considerable, has receded and his interest in the three-time Premier League champions has apparently dwindled – the pot of funds that once financed 200 million pounds worth of transfers in little over 12 months, now baulks at the prospect of offering players over 30 such as Michael Ballack and Juliano Belletti new contracts.

Such has been the dependency on a core of players over the last three years that the drip feed of youngsters into the Chelsea team simply has not happened in the way Arsenal and Manchester United have been able to blood fresh players every season. One of Jose Mourinho’s secondary crusades was to attempt to bring some young players through the youth set up during his time at the Bridge. Players like Michael Woods, Steven Watt and Michael Mancienne have been given a sample of life in the big time, only to be farmed out before a true indication of their abilities is garnered.

It is with this backdrop that Carlo Ancelotti began this season with one of the smallest squads in the division. His brief from the watching Abramovic has been to incorporate the youth team players on the fringe of the squad and forge a successful, Champions League winning team out of next to nothing. Surely an impossible task.

In terms of starting XI, the Chelsea side being put out each week remains strong. Potentially lacking in pace and creativity at key times, however, there is no doubt that this is not a side to be languishing in fifth having taken only 11 points from their last 10 league games.

The lack of depth has, nevertheless, meant that changing games going against the champions has proven very tough for Ancelotti. Whilst undoubtedly displaying high levels of technical ability with ball at their feet, players like Gael Kakuta, Daniel Sturridge and Ramires have lacked the physical presence to force their agenda onto games in the manner Michael Ballack or Claude Makelele were able to do.

[divider]

There has been some faith shown in players like Kakuta, the controversially acquired French youngster recently signed a new long-term deal at the club, Abramovich learning from allowing Glen Johnson and Lassana Diarra to leave West London before a fair picture of their worth was gathered. This has not always extended to giving players more of the spotlight.

It has not helped that Ancelotti’s team selection has hardly been consistent with a man trying to give exposure to his youngsters. In fact, up until making his Premier League debut against Aston Villa last weekend, it appeared that the Italian would rather play a current day Paul Merson at the heart of the Chelsea defence rather than young Jeffrey Bruma.

Josh McEachran has been given some match time, however I remember writing previously that I believed Ancelotti not to trust the boy in big games – this has remained the case. Having only played 68 minutes of Premier League football this term, McEachran is still an unknown quantity as we head into the second half of the season.

It would surely be stunningly naïve for the club’s hierarchy to decide that their resounding 7-0 win over Ipswich at the weekend has cured the ills that have dogged the side since October. That being said, this transfer window is sure to test the Blues’ long-term goal of financial self-sufficiency as they will surely look to add some power, both creative and physical, to their midfield. To suggest anything else will only fuel fears amongst fans that a first finish outside of the top four since 2002 could be on the cards.

With UEFA financial restrictions also on the horizon, these players must be persevered with, and regardless of who is jetted in to rescue the Blues’ season, the maligned youth of Chelsea with have to play a role if the club is to taste any success in 2011.

Top TEN ‘unfulfilled’ Premier League talents

Whether a player fulfils his talents or not is reliant upon our expectations and projections regarding his future. This fact makes this list a pretty subjective affair. Of course it’s sad to see talent go unfulfilled. It’s difficult to see players fail to live up to expectations. But it’s the natural instinct of a fan to feel disappointed when ‘the next big thing’ fails to fulfil their potential. This can happen for any number of reasons: Injury, disciplinary problems, lack of motivation, bad management. The list could go on.

Below are ten players that have yet to fulfil their potential. If you agree or disagree with my selection, feel free to say so and add some further names in the comment section below.

Capello regrets Walcott omission

Fabio Capello admits he made a mistake in leaving Theo Walcott out of the England squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Arsenal forward Walcott was a mainstay of the qualification campaign under Italian Capello, but was surprisingly dropped from final 23-man contingent.

England were dumped out in the first knock-out round after struggling to escape their group in South Africa.

Now, former Roma and Juventus coach Capello has conceded that Walcott should have been included.

“He is playing how I remember when he started to play with us. It was a tough decision leaving Theo out for the World Cup,” Capello said.

“He is one of the players after the World Cup I thought about a lot. I made a mistake not selecting him.”

“He is one of the players who can make the difference. I should have taken him.”

Capello also bemoaned his lack of options for the pivotal role of a holding midfielder ahead of the World Cup.

But he appears to have now settled on a long-term solution in the form of Arsenal youngster Jack Wilshere.

“(Owen) Hargreaves played this position very, very well every game,” Capello said.

“But after the knee problem, he was never back.”

“I put different players in there but they’d never played in this position. (Gareth) Barry with Aston Villa never played this position. But I saw Wilshere play every game in this position.”

Capello compared Wilshere to former France international midfielder Claude Makelele, who underpinned the Chelsea side that won two English Premier League titles under Jose Mourinho in 2005 and 2006.

“Wilshere is better technically than Makelele. He’s slower than Makelele but when he receives the ball he is more dangerous than Makelele.”

“Wilshere is the best young player. He now plays all the time with Arsenal. If you play with Arsenal, you are a really good player because Arsene Wenger likes good players.”

“I think he’s mature enough to play this role. He’s a really interesting player.”

FIFA denies appeals of duo

FIFA has dismissed appeals to erase bans handed out to corrupt executives Amos Adamu and Reynald Temarii on Friday.

After appeals to world football’s governing body, Adamu – a Nigerian representative on the FIFA executive committee – had his three-year ban confirmed, while Oceania representative Temarii maintained his one-year suspension away from any football-related activity.

The pair were found guilty of breaking FIFA’s confidentiality rules in the process of deciding host nations for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

FIFA confirmed the outcome of the appeals in a statement on Friday.

“The FIFA appeal committee has confirmed the decisions taken on November 17 regarding the bans on Reynald Temarii and Amos Adamu – who were at the time FIFA vice-president and FIFA executive committee member – for a breach of the FIFA code of ethics,” the statement read.

The suspensions can be appealed, again, at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Three former FIFA ethics committee members had their suspensions upheld, but reduced, after being found guilty of unethical behaviour: Slim Aloulou, Amadou Diakite and Ahongalu Fusimalohi.

Serie A: Bologna 0 Roma 1

Daniele De Rossi has handed new coach Vincenzo Montella victory on debut, scoring the winner in Roma’s 1-0 result at Bologna on Wednesday. The Italy international, who was lucky to avoid being sent off for a second caution just minutes before scoring, ensured Roma snapped the three-game losing streak that ultimately led to Claudio Ranieri’s resignation from the Serie A club. Montella rang the changes in his first game as manager, promoting Brazilian custodian Doni to number one ahead of compatriot Julio Sergio and dropping iconic captain Francesco Totti to the bench. The midweek game, rescheduled after being abandoned in January due to snow, bizarrely began with a corner at the 17-minute mark – the point at which the original fixture was called off.De Rossi should have earned a second yellow card for clearing the ball with his hand in the 41st minute, and four minutes later he popped up to slot home Mirko Vucinic’s centre past Bologna goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano.Roma rise to sixth on the Serie A table with their first win in a month, six points adrift of fourth-placed city rivals Lazio.

FIVE midfield generals available, but who should Comolli sign?

Despite Liverpool’s excellent display against Manchester United at the weekend, I still feel that if we are to compete for the title within the next few years, we will need a player in the guise of Javier Mascherano to really help the Reds break up attacks, not only against the best teams but also against the less talented, more physical opponents in the Barclays Premier League. Lucas has played very well for the last year but it is clear he will never be the most physical of holding midfield players. Although he can break up play and pass neatly, he will never outmuscle opponents. Certainly, this doesn’t mean we have to go for a like for like replacement for Mascherano but for me, to give us a different option to Lucas, we need somebody who is both physically up the challenge but also able on the ball to the pass the ball like the Brazilian. The five options below have all been linked with us in the past couple of months. Who would you pick?

Moussa Sissoko – Probably the prime candidate for the Reds for a few reasons. 1) He is strong and physical, making him the ideal defensive midfielder to break up play and outmuscle opponents. 2) He has played further forward over the last couple of seasons for Toulouse and has scored his fair share of goals, giving the player an added dimension to the rest of the players on the list. 3) He is young, talented and French meaning Damien Comolli will know all about Sissoko, and will no doubt have scouted the player on a number of occasions.

Yann M’Vila – Another young French star who has probably caught the eye of Comolli is Rennes’ holding midfield player M’Vila. Tall and rangy, he is an excellent tackler but lacks the forward thinking ambitions of Sissoko. Despite this though, France coach Laurent Blanc has used the 20 year old regularly in the national team and impressed playing for France against England back in November.

Blaise Matuidi – Another young Frenchman, Matuidi has most likely been linked with Liverpool due to Comolli’s prior association with St Etienne. Still he is the club’s captain at the age of 23 and has already been capped by France. Considering Comolli has stated he wouldn’t buy players off St Etienne however, it is unlikely the Reds will move for the player, although he maybe a cheaper option than the rest of the players on this list.

Lassana Diarra – Probably the least likely player to move to Liverpool on this list as in recent weeks, he has been back in favour with Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid. If the Portuguese manager does depart in the summer though, the French midfielder may opt to leave the Bernabeu if Real’s hierarchy deem him surplus to requirements. A talented holding midfielder with experience of the Premier League, as well as having the capability to get forward, if Diarra was available he would probably cost a significant amount more than the other 4 on this list.

Fernando Gago – More in the mould of Lucas than the rest of the players on this list, the Argentine holding midfielder has been linked with a move away from Spain. His agent today failed to rule out a move away from Real Madrid, and with Gago being both young and talented; the Reds have been linked with the player. Whenever I have watched the player play for Real though, I feel he wouldn’t necessarily be the type of midfield destroyer we would be looking for.
