Glen Johnson believes Roy Hodgson failed as manager of Liverpool because he wasn’t ready to manage such a big club.

What did he say?

The former Red spent six years on Anfield playing under the likes of Rafa Benitez, Kenny Dalglish, Brendan Rodgers and Hodgson, so is well-placed to judge what it takes to succeed at the club.

All four managers had different approaches and although the latter has had a lot of success at various clubs and in different countries, Johnson believes he lacked the mentality necessary to achieve with Liverpool.

Speaking to The Anfield Wrap, via The Mirror, he said: “Well Roy, no disrespect, had come from smaller clubs and I don’t think he was ready to manage Liverpool.

“We’d be worried about playing a smaller team at Anfield. No disrespect to the smaller teams but you have to grab the bull by the horns and just go and put them to bed, and he just didn’t have that sort of mentality, it was all a bit straight line and defensive.”

That goes some way to explaining why the former England manager wasn’t the right fit. Along with poor signings such as Milan Jovanovic and Paul Konchesky – who each made just 18 appearances for the club – he won just 13 out of 31 games.

Negative mindset

Hodgson’s most notable success in recent years has been at Fulham and West Brom, whilst he has done a very respectable job at Crystal Palace after taking over in difficult circumstances.

However, at both England and the Reds it is fair to say he was a disaster because he didn’t understand the ethos of Liverpool in terms of what was expected from the team.

Results failed, in part, due to his negative set-up and defensive style, with his side scoring 41 goals under his tenure. Many fans were also frustrated at an attitude which saw the Reds “praying for draws” against the likes of Blackburn, Wolves and Bolton.

Liverpool fans’ concerns at the time were justifiable, having seen their team play negatively with one striker in several games, as well as enduring a seven-game winless streak which also included a League Cup defeat at home to Northampton.

He also failed to get the best out of Fernando Torres, with the Spaniard scoring only six goals in 22 games, which suggests that Johnson is right in his assessment that Liverpool too often failed to assert themselves as a dominant threat.

وأكمل: “في بعض الأحيان يتعين عليك إعادة التعيين والنظر إلى الأساسيات والأمور بعين أخرى، وخاصةً فيما يتعلق بالدفاع”.

وأتم تصريحاته قائلًا: “ستكون الأمور على ما يرام، وستسير بشكل جيد بالنسبة له، ولكن عليه أن يرى ذلك، ثم يعمل على حل المشكلة ويمضي قدمًا”.

According to Time Sport, as reported by Goal, West Ham tried to sign Mohamed Elneny from Arsenal during the summer.

What’s the word?

The Egyptian international was reportedly a wanted man over the transfer window, with a host of clubs interested in taking him away from the Emirates before he made a loan move to Besiktas.

His agent, Alaa Nazmy, has revealed that West Ham were amongst that list of clubs to make an offer to his client, though it is not clear whether they were interested in a permanent or short-term deal.

The Hammers were linked with midfield players throughout the window, including Everton’s Andre Gomes, but in the end Manuel Pellegrini had to settle for what he had, with just four players on the books able to play in central midfield.

Interestingly, it doesn’t appear high on the list of his transfer agenda, instead focusing on adding a striker and a defender, but given the lack of depth and quality, not landing Elneny could be a chance missed.

Upgrade on current players

Although Declan Rice and Mark Noble have made the midfield their own since the beginning of last season, but there is a worrying lack of depth in the squad, with players such as Jack Wilshere and Carlos Sanchez lacking fitness, quality, or both.

The latter is a particular concern, and if he doesn’t make some kind of impact soon he will rightly be considered a flop – he might already be well on the way to that having picked up a 2/10 rating from Football London for his display against Oxford this term.

Since signing in the summer of 2018 he has made only 13 appearances for the club, achieving a WhoScored average rating of just six in 2018/19, and therefore hasn’t provided sufficient competition to West Ham’s regulars.

That should be a concern for Pellegrini, and Elneny would have likely solved that problem. He was often on the periphery at Arsenal but displayed his quality on the ball when he got the chance and having settled in the London area after arriving for £5m he could have been a good fit at the Hammers.

He played only 15 times for the Gunners last season but his pass accuracy never fell below 91% and he managed 1.6 tackles per league game, which shows that he would have added to West Ham in both attack and defence.

Manchester City returned to winning ways with yet another convincing win last weekend against Crystal Palace.

A 50th City goal for Gabriel Jesus and a sublime team goal from David Silva sealed the points at Selhurst Park.

The result brought the champions back within six points of league leaders Liverpool after the Reds drew with Manchester United at Old Trafford. Plus, with Jurgen Klopp’s men not playing until Sunday, Guardiola has a chance to be within three points off the top spot by Saturday afternoon.

The Spaniard will be looking to do so with another demolition of a visiting team to the Etihad. This time, it’s Aston Villa.

In defence is where the former Barcelona boss has had the issues this season. The long term injury to Aymeric Laporte and the departure of Vincent Kompany has forced Fernandinho and Rodri into a makeshift backline.

However, Rodri’s injury against Atalanta will keep him out and most likely force the Brazilian to stay in at centre-back alongside John Stones. Elsewhere, Oleksandr Zinchenko underwent knee surgery this week, which should keep Benjamin Mendy at left-back for the foreseeable future.

Kyle Walker’s position at right-back has been under threat this season with the signing of Joao Cancelo. The former Juventus man could come into the side on a regular basis now after he played the full game against the Eagles.

In midfield, Rodri’s injury leaves Ilkay Gundogan as the most likely option, whilst Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva remain irreplaceable for the Citizens – the playmaking duo have an outstanding four goals and 12 assists between them in the Premier League.

In the attacking slots, Raheem Sterling scored yet another hat-trick for City in midweek. It leaves the 24-year-old on 81 goals for the club since his move from Liverpool in 2015. Also, despite being rested for the clash at Selhurst Park, Sergio Aguero is still Guardiola’s go-to man for goals in the league.

The Argentine is the joint top scorer in the top-flight and is averaging a goal every 70 minutes in the league. Alongside the 31-year-old could be Bernardo Silva, who has four goals and two assists in the league so far from just five starts.

What’s the story?

According to a report from The Sun On Sunday (27/11, page 61), Sheffield United are interested in bringing in Swansea City defender Joe Rodon.

This wouldn’t be the first time the two teams have done business together, as Ollie McBurnie made the move from South Wales to South Yorkshire this past summer.

Whether or not his injury sustained in the South Wales Derby will have any impact on the deal is yet to be seen.

Building for the future?

The 22-year-old Welsh defender has certainly developed well at the Liberty Stadium, so much so that he has managed to gain the trust of his national side.

Having made his debut against Azerbaijan back in August, he has been an ever-present in Ryan Giggs’ side since, keeping more experienced players like Ashley Williams out of the starting line-up.

There have been some reports that have gone so far as dubbing him ‘The Welsh John Stones’, and his career statistics would back up those claims, averaging 53 passes per game for an average of 86.1%.

Whilst they’re a little bit short of the Man City defender’s numbers of 59.7 and 92.9%, it’s still a respectable amount, especially when you consider the division he is in.

Whilst he may be in a position to help Chris Wilder’s side out right now, bringing in someone at the age of 22 means that he can be of great benefit for the Blades not just in this season, but also going forward as well.

If you take a look at the current crop of Sheffield United centre-backs, half of them are over the age of 30, Richard Stearman, Phil Jagielka and Chris Basham, and they’re all going to need replacing at some stage.

Although given what he’s managed to do so far in his young career, it’s fair to say he’ll be able to command a role in the starting eleven straight away.

If he doesn’t, then at least they’ve got someone capable of playing a star role when the elder statesmen move on.

سُئل زيدان إذا كان قلقًا من شعور الفريق بالتعب، وأجاب: “لا، صحيح أن هناك العديد من الأشياء التي تحدث، ولكن هذا هو الوضع وجدول المباريات، إنه ليس لنا وحدنا”.

وتابع: “سقط ميندي وفالفيردي في اللحظة الأخيرة، هذه كرة القدم، ودائمًا عليك أن تتوقع كل شيء، لعب أنطونيو بلانكو بشكل رائع”.

وشدد زيدان: “التفكير في التعثرات والهزيمة يعني الاستسلام، نحن حاولنا وما زال هناك مشوار كبير حتى نهاية الموسم”.

يذكر أن أتلتيكو مدريد يتصدر الليجا بـ70 نقطة، يليه ريال مدريد بـ67 ثم برشلونة بـ65 نقطة.

أكد رامون كالديرون الرئيس السابق لنادي ريال مدريد، أنه كان سيطلب من بابا الفاتيكان المساعدة في ضم ليونيل ميسي إلى ريال مدريد.

كالديرون الذي لم يتردد في الكشف عن إعجابه الكبير بـ ليونيل ميسي مهاجم برشلونة، المنافس الأبدي للنادي الملكي، أكد أنه كان مستعدا لفعل أي شيء من أجل ضمه.

وأضاف: “كنت سأذهب إلى روما وأعود إلى البابا وأطلب منه مساعدتي، لقد حلمت كثيرًا برؤيته وهو يرتدي قميص ريال مدريد”.

وأشار: “كان من الصعب بل مستحيل أن نضمه لأنه كان لاعبًا لـ برشلونة، ولهذا السبب تعاقدنا مع كريستيانو رونالدو، كان ذلك من اهتماماتي وهوسي، لأنه كان اللاعب الآخر الذي يمكن أن يعوض ميسي في الوقت الحالي”.

واختتم: “كنا محظوظين بما يكفي لضم رونالدو، وقد عمل بشكل جيد للغاية، لقد جعلا بعضهما البعض –رونالدو وميسي- الأفضل في العالم”.

A lot has been said about Riqui Puig already – the 20-year-old pearl of La Masia is definitely one of the Barcelona youngsters the Blaugrana have high hopes for.

But his situation has been causing an internal debate in recent times – he seems to be too good for the Segunda Division B, the third level of football in Spain, and yet, there’s no room for him in the senior team.

And seeing how he’s been a victim of some harsh treatment by the opposition at Barcelona B, one thing became crystal clear – he shouldn’t stay there any longer as the risk became too big.

But if the recent reports coming from Sport are true, Puig refuses to leave the club any time soon and is determined to make it at the Catalan capital.

While that sort of attitude is certainly praiseworthy and admirable, it could be the thing that comes back to bite him in the end.

Staying loyal to Barcelona is definitely a good sign for the club but his stubbornness to leave on loan in order to get some valuable experience and minutes, and more importantly, get away from the difficult circumstances of the Segunda Division B, might hamper his short term development.

And yes, it might be far too early to actually talk about such drastic measures but it’s unlikely he continues his development by staying put at Barcelona B.

According to Sport, that is exactly his idea – staying and becoming good enough for Ernesto Valverde to include him in the senior squad.

But can that actually happen if he doesn’t make that necessary step up?

At the moment, it seems that Puig is choosing the absolute worst option presented to him and for his and the club’s sake, let’s hope it doesn’t backfire.

Few people would have predicted a night so full of action on Wednesday at Anfield between Liverpool and Arsenal.
