What’s the word?

Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas has claimed the Baggies are eyeing a loan move for Galatasaray striker Mbaye Diagne as a deal for Hoffenheim forward Ishak Belfodil fell through last week.

It’s thought that the 29-year-old is available with an option-to-buy at the end of the season should Albion survive in the Premier League, despite the talisman having two-and-a-half years to run on his current contract.

“We have tried to acquire at least one or two new players this week but that hasn’t come to fruition,” said a desperate Sam Allardyce earlier in the week.

Shades of Salomon Rondon

Whilst 10-time Senegal international has never played in the Premier League, he cannot be written off despite the need for top-flight experience as his career goalscoring record is mightily impressive.

In just 38 appearances for the Lions, he’s found the net 22 times, including 11 this season, via Transfermarkt.

Indeed, Diagne has proven to be a prolific marksman wherever he’s been – at Turkish rivals Kasimpasa, he bagged 32 goals in 36 appearances, while on loan at Club Brugge last term, he quickly racked up four in six league matches, and during his time in China at Tianjin Teda, he found the net 15 times in 46 games, also per Transfermarkt.

A record of 94 goals in 164 career games isn’t something to turn your nose up at, that’s one goal every 1.7 matches.

In some ways, this move would very much echo that of Salomon Rondon back in 2015, a relatively unknown striker signed from Rubin Kazan for £12m. He had only played in his home country of Venezuela, Spain and Russia prior to the move – he turned out to be quite the player, didn’t he?

Rondon hit at least seven goals in three successive Premier League seasons before Albion were relegated to the Championship and as a result, he joined Newcastle where he would score 11 goals in the top-flight.

Speaking about his own playing style to the Guardian in May 2020, Diagne said: ” I’m big and strong, I can hold up the ball and lay it off, I’m good in the air and I’m a finisher.”

Indeed, he has won an average of 2.7 aerial duels and has fired off a whopping 2.6 shots per game throughout the course of his career, per WhoScored, which far exceeds that of summer signing Karlan Grant (0.8 aerials won, 1.3 shots per game).

Again, that only draws further similarities to Rondon and is certainly something that the Baggies are lacking with the 6-foot speedster Grant, especially since Charlie Austin has gone to QPR on loan.

The £44k-per-week marksman would be a fantastic addition this month, so it’s on sporting director Luke Dowling to sanction this swoop at all costs.

According to Okay Yokuslu’s agent Batur Altiparmak, West Bromwich Albion have entered talks to sign the Turkey international on loan this month.

Baggies eye Yokuslu

The Baggies have been linked with a move for the 26-year-old midfielder (The Daily Mail), and it now seems they have stepped up their pursuit of the former Trabzonspor man.

Altiparmak has told AS that the Hawthorns outfit are in talks to sign Yokuslu on loan until the end of the season.

Matic-like midfielder

Yokuslu has been somewhat of a bit-part player for Celta Vigo, his current club, so far this campaign – he has played just 410 minutes in La Liga (Transfermarkt). However, with 28 caps for Turkey, he clearly has plenty of experience, and could therefore be an interesting option for Sam Allardyce.

Upon his transfer from Trabzonspor to Vigo in 2018, £3.6m-valued Yokuslu (Transfermarkt) compared himself to Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic (Fotomac via Stretty News). Indeed, when comparing the two on WhoScored, their stats are rather similar. Throughout his career, Yokuslu has averaged 2.2 tackles and 1.9 interceptions, while Matic’s numbers stand at 2.4 and 1.7 respectively.

The latter has won four league titles – three Premier Leagues with Chelsea and one title with Benfica in Portugal. Were Yokuslu to have anything like the impact Matic has had in the English top flight, West Brom would be signing a top player.

Steve Bruce should urge Newcastle United to swoop in and sign Sam Cosgrove during the January transfer window after Stoke City had the Aberdeen striker scouted.

What’s the word?

According to The Scottish Sun, Potters boss Michael O’Neill is a big admirer of Cosgrove and had the 24-year-old watched as Aberdeen were beaten 2-1 by runaway Premiership leaders Rangers earlier this month.

Cosgrove has been a long-term target for Stoke having tracked his situation for the last two windows, while Newcastle are said to have been assessing his potential as a younger Andy Carroll type who can provide cover in attack.

The 6 ft 4 colossus turned down a £2.7m move to French second-tier side En Avant de Guingamp last summer, and Aberdeen are expected to demand a similar fee to sell him this month.

A deal for Cosgrove would further deplete Aberdeen’s attacking ranks, with talks with Rangers over a deal to offload Scott Wright this month already underway and Ryan Edmondson now at Northampton after his loan from Leeds.

Cosgrove missed the start of the 2020/21 Premiership season after sustaining cartilage damage but returned to action in late October and has started seven of his 12 Scottish top-flight appearances to date, scoring three goals.

Should Newcastle sign Cosgrove?

Stoke’s scouts will not have been entirely bowled over by Cosgrove’s performance against Rangers earlier this month, with Steven Gerrard’s side winning their 21st game of the season to pull further clear of rivals Celtic at the top of the table.

Cosgrove could not find the back of the net with his only shot of the Gers affair, having rarely found possession in the final third but contesting 13 ground duels and nine aerial contests, per SofaScore, to show that he was not afraid to go toe-to-toe with the best opposition around.

His output up top was not unusual, either, with Cosgrove only averaging 1.1 shots per league game this season, yet his combative nature was far above his general standards of 6.6 ground duels and 5.3 aerial challenges contested a game. Those are certainly aspects Bruce would stand to benefit from at Newcastle, with the threat of a relegation battle a growing reality after Monday night’s 3-0 loss at Arsenal.

Cosgrove’s stellar goal record last season proved he knows where the goal is, too, having scored 23 times in 38 games across all competitions, which Bruce would no doubt love to tap into with Callum Wilson proving his only regular goal threat at Newcastle.

But even Wilson has not found the back of the net in his last four Premier League games and only boasts one goal in his last seven top-flight appearances, forcing Bruce to hope that Carroll can add to his only goal in the last 1,010 days across all competitions.

Dwight Gayle also only has one goal to his name this season and is yet to start a fixture in any competition, with each of his seven appearances to date coming from the bench following yet more injury struggles for the 31-year-old.

Having another option who can score frequently in Cosgrove, then, could prove to be what saves Newcastle’s season from total collapse, and a £2.7m fee may prove very good value for money.
