'Exciting' Adams not used properly: Hadlee

WELLINGTON – Andre Adams was a tremendous one-day cricket prospect butwas not properly used during the tri-series in Australia, New Zealandchairman of selectors Richard Hadlee said yesterday.

NZPA11-Feb-2002WELLINGTON – Andre Adams was a tremendous one-day cricket prospect butwas not properly used during the tri-series in Australia, New Zealandchairman of selectors Richard Hadlee said yesterday. The talented Auckland fast-medium bowler and lower-order batsman wasyesterday chosen for his first one-dayer in New Zealand against Englandin Christchurch on Wednesday after offering hints of his ability in fourappearances across the Tasman.”Andre has untapped potential. He is an exciting prospect,” Hadlee said.”In our conditions he can be a real handful. It’s all a question of howhe is used.”Hadlee disagreed with Adams batting at No 3, as he did on two occasionsin Australia, failing both times. Hadlee said he regarded Adams’ shotability as ideal to lift the run rate in the last 10 overs.Adams was also among the best-equipped players to bowl at the death but, with his inexperience, he was not seen as his best in Australia.Among New Zealand’s concerns in the tri-series was an inability toaccelerate the run rate in the closing overs.Hadlee said that though Wellington fast-medium bowler James Franklin hadbowled well on occasions, it was disappointing his batting had notimproved.Franklin was among four players dropped yesterday for the first twomatches against England. He was named for Wellington in the Statechampionship match against Northern Districts tomorrow in Hamilton.Otago’s opening batsman Brendon McCullum was retained on the basis thathe was a long-term prospect, Hadlee said. McCullum provided an extrabatting option down the order.”Brendon had a couple of useful performances in Australia and we haveyet to find out how good he is in New Zealand conditions,” Hadlee said.Though Nathan Astle’s tightfisted medium-pace bowling was little used inAustralia, largely it seemed because the pitches did not suit him,Hadlee said he expected Astle to again be effective back home. The New Zealand players returned from Australia over the weekend, andassemble in Christchurch today.

Journalist provides key Neuhaus update

Liverpool will make a ‘concrete offer’ for Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Florian Neuhaus this summer, according to journalist Florian Plettenburg.

The Lowdown: Neuhaus links continue

The Reds could be expected to make more signings in the coming months after their difficult campaign, with centre-back Ibrahima Konate already arriving from RB Leipzig.

One player who has been continually linked with a move to Liverpool is Neuhaus, who is currently on Euro 2020 with Germany.

The 24-year-old featured in 33 of Monchengladbach’s 38 Bundesliga matches last season, proving to be a key man in the middle of the park.

The Latest: Journalist provides update

Plettenburg, journalist and podcaster for SPORT1, has now given a fresh update on Liverpool’s pursuit of Neuhaus, taking to Twitter to say:

“Update #Neuhaus (due to many inquiries): #LFC is definitely a highly interesting option for the player. A concrete offer for him is expected. It’s also up to Klopp. However, a decision on his future will be made after the Euros.”

The Verdict: Wijnaldum’s replacement?

With Gini Wijnaldum leaving Liverpool for Paris Saint-Germain, a huge void is going to left in the Reds’ midfield, given the Dutchman’s influence there.

It could be that the £31.5million-rated Neuhaus is the man to solve that issue, thriving in a similar manner to Wijnaldum, even if they aren’t too similar, in terms of playing style.

The German averaged three tackles per game in the Champions League in 2020/21, showing how effective he can be off the ball, but also chipped in with six goals and five assists in the league – end product was something Wijnaldum largely lacked, managing just two league goals and zero assists last term.

Neuhaus would, therefore, bring both attacking guile and defensive work-rate to Liverpool’s team, making up for the loss of Wijnaldum in the process.

Southampton suffer Junior Firpo setback

Southampton’s hopes of signing Barcelona defender Junior Firpo this summer look to have been dashed after reports have suggested that he’d prefer a move to AC Milan rather than a switch to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side.

Both Southampton and West Ham have regularly been linked with the Real Betis man this summer, with the left-back one of several players likely to be sold by the Catalan side as they look to ease their financial woes.

However, it seems as if AC Milan are now leading the race for the 24-year-old after Spanish news outlet Sport claimed that he favours a move to the Italian side, although they are interested in a loan-to-buy deal, with Barcelona understandably keen on selling him permanently, with West Ham and Southampton both reportedly willing to meet his asking price.

The Spaniard has struggled to impress since his switch to Barcelona in August 2019, as he has managed just 41 appearances in all competitions, in which he has contributed two goals and three assists, with Jordi Alba still very much the first-choice left-back at the Nou Camp.

Therefore, it is no surprise that the £7.2m-rated defender is set to leave the La Liga side this summer and had he managed to rediscover the form he showed at Real Betis earlier in his career, then he could’ve proved to be an excellent addition to Hasenhuttl’s side this summer.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

Former Barcelona man Marc Bartra certainly rates Firpo highly, as he was full of praise for him in 2019, saying:

“He is a player who has shown that he has a lot of potential, quality and the ability of being in the right place at the right time.”

Although the Saints look close to completing a deal for fellow left-back Romain Perraud, Ryan Bertrand’s exit suggests that Hasenhuttl still needs another left-sided defender in his side to compete with the Frenchman next season, especially when you consider that Jake Vokins has shown little to suggest that he can be a reliable back-up in that position.

Therefore, it is arguably a big blow for the South Coast club that Firpo seemingly isn’t interested in a switch to the Premier League, as it would’ve been great for Hasenhuttl to have him and Perraud competing for the starting spot in his side next season.

And, in other news… Hasenhuttll dealt fresh setback with “incredible” Southampton beast, Saints fans will be worried

Last group net session this week before the players report back on March 18th

The indoor net session at the Centre of Excellence earlier this week was the last one of the winter before the senior players all report back for pre season training on Monday March 18th

Richard Walsh07-Mar-2002The indoor net session at the Centre of Excellence earlier this week was the last one of the winter before the senior players all report back for pre season training on Monday March 18th.Once again there was an almost full house and the numbers were this week increased by the presence of Rob Turner and Keith Parson’s who have just recently returned from a tour to New Zealand, as part of Rob’s benefit, to watch the One-Day Internationals.Rob spent part of the evening keeping wicket in the slow bowlers net, whilst Keith showed that he was almost back to full fitness as he batted against the bowling machine which was being fed with tennis balls. One of the features of the net sessions this winter has been the involvement of a number of the youngsters from the Somerset and the E.C.B. Regional Academy.Certainly of those young players who were on show on Tuesday evening Luke Stokes from Millfield, and Cornishmen Neil Edwards and leg break bowler Michael Munday gave a good account of themselves.Assistant Coach Mark Garaway told me, “It was an exceptional session for everybody, particularly with some of the different practices that we have introduced.”Coach Kevin Shine added, “The feed back that we have had from everybody about the sessions has been very positive. Most players work within their comfort zone, but we have tried to set challenges by bringing in new activities.”He continued, “We are lucky with the guys that we have, they are willing to open their eyes. They’ve all got their performance diaries and are working constantly out of their comfort zone, but if they don’t want to do it they won’t.”When the players report back on March 18th without a doubt they will be as fit and strong as they ever have been which will stand them in good stead for the season that lies ahead.

Should Celtic re-sign Aaron Hickey?

After finally touching down in Glasgow on Wednesday afternoon, Ange Postecoglou has got straight to work on Celtic’s recruitment.

Prior reports led us to believe that the new Hoops boss was already active in the window, with Celtic’s defence a key priority of his.

What’s the word?

Celtic have reportedly begun talks over a move for Valentin Rosier and Riccieli but they have also started negotiations with a left-back in Italy.

That happens to be one of their former employers, Aaron Hickey.

According to the Daily Mail (via The Sun), the Bhoys are plotting a £3m bid in order to prise him away from Bologna.

Hickey only joined the Serie A side last summer but could make a swift return to Scotland after initially departing Hearts.

Celtic have been interested in securing his services for a number of months and it looks as though a move may be starting to materialise.

Perfect for Postecoglou

With the new Celtic head coach preferring an attack-minded style of play in his previous jobs, Hickey would be an ideal signing.

He might be a defender but he often plays at breakneck speed, darting down the left-hand side in much the same way Kieran Tierney did for the Bhoys.

Hickey left Celtic as a 16-year-old but has progressed immensely in recent seasons, now possessing a set of attacking traits to frighten the life out of defenders. In a scout report on the player, The Footie Analyst wrote: “One of Hickey’s key strengths is his ability to run with the ball at speed, utilising the space available to drive his team forward.”

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-transfer-news-posetcoglou-ryan-delap-wyke” title= “Read the latest Celtic transfer news!”]

Of players to feature for 90 minutes on more than one occasion last term, Hickey ranked as Bologna’s seventh-best player for ball carries with 38.3 per 90.

The teenager also ranked as the Italian club’s fourth-best player from their regular starters in terms of progressive carries of the ball per 90 minutes, advancing possession 229.9 yards.

What should really delight Postecoglou is Hickey’s ability to press. In Japan, the Australian built his system around a high-intense press, squeezing the opposition high up the pitch and winning the ball back quickly.

In this department, the £16k-per-week earner was successful with 35.1% of his pressures last season. That was the fourth-best tally at Bologna for those to manage more than four 90 minutes during the course of the campaign.

Another benefit for the new coach could be his versatility. Speaking previously about the defender’s game, former Hearts man Austin MacPhee remarked: “He’s so young he could play a lot of positions. He could end up being like Busquets.”

That’s a viewpoint that Craig Levein agrees with: “He could be a fantastic holding midfielder with his great awareness of danger and his ability to get out of tight situations with the ball at his feet,” he said.

Whether or not Hickey transitions into midfield remains to be seen but what is for sure, is that he’s as confident in possession as the great Spaniard.

He completed 91.1% of his short passes last term and over 85% of his medium passes.

For a further glimpse at his potential, he’s also been compared to one of the greatest German full-backs to play the game: “Aaron as a player is like Philipp Lahm,” ex-Hearts boss Daniel Stendel once commented.

“For me at Hearts, he played as a full-back. He not only runs up and down the line, but looks for attacking moves like Lahm once did. And Aaron can also play in the central midfield. Trust me, he will have a great career,” Stendel concluded.

The young Scot may have slipped through the Celtic net when he was younger but he is now swimming towards their waters again. Dominic McKay must set the bait and lure him to Paradise for a second stint.

AND in other news, Celtic eye swoop for 56-goal gem who is “among the best”, he’d be a great Edouard heir…

Ready for West Indies roll call

There are a couple of West Indian cricketers in Port-of-Spain this morning, at the preliminary training camp for the upcoming Indian series, who must have wondered whether they would ever be in such company again

Tony Cozier23-Mar-2002There are a couple of West Indian cricketers in Port-of-Spain this morning, at the preliminary training camp for the upcoming Indian series, who must have wondered whether they would ever be in such company again. There are others scattered across the Caribbean who are putting their own interpretations on their absence from the guest list. For Stuart Williams, 32, and Junior Murray, 34, it is a recall three years after they last played for the West Indies and at an age when the thoughts of international sportsmen turn to a final farewell from the action and pressures of competition, to coaching posts and to commentary boxes. But what of Leon Garrick, Kerry Jeremy, Reon King, Jermaine Lawson and Corey Collymore, all young men in their mid or early 20s who have already had the recent taste of international cricket? What message should they read in their removal from the roll call? The case for Williams and Murray would seem to be based on the weight of performance over the last two regional seasons.Williams averaged 53 in the Busta Cup last year and rounded off this year’s campaign with his unbeaten 252 against Guyana in the semi-final, a record 974 runs and an average of 97.4.Murray, the linchpin of the weak Windwards batting for the past decade, reeled off four hundreds, another tournament record, and averaged 53.5 to supplement his 26 catches and a stumping. Those are figures no selection panel could resist, even if they were compiled in what has become the depressed standard of our domestic cricket. If Williams and Murray were excluded from the 22, Keith Mitchell and Vance Amory, their respective prime ministers, would have led their people in collective apoplexy.Yet there are reasons other than runs for their presence.Williams’ experience is the same factor that brought Sherwin Campbell back into the team for the series against Pakistan in Sharjah when Brian Lara and Ramnaresh Sarwan were missing with their injuries.Only if Lara’s elbow and Sarwan’s back remain immobile would a place be available for Williams in the starting eleven and, as with Campbell in Sharjah, it could only be at No. 3.Should a new opener be required, the dashing young Grenadian left-hander Devon Smith is surely the man. He is 12 years Williams junior, outscored him and everyone else in the preliminary round of the Busta, carries an unmistakable touch of class and has a long-term future in West Indies cricket.A year ago, against South Africa, it was Garrick, the little 25-year-old Jamaican jack-in-the-box who briefly filled the role. His treatment since can only have left him in a state of utter bewilderment. He was confined to four matches on subsequent tours of Zimbabwe, Kenya and Sri Lanka and is now scratched after a Busta Cup in which he averaged 41.Had there been the equivalent of a Devon Smith or a Garrick among the keepers, there would be also be no need for Murray at this point of his career, no matter how many runs he scores. But, as with Courtney Browne when Jacobs was harshly suspended for one Test in Zimbabwe last July, Murray has been summoned because no young contender has come through.Jeremy has cause to be just as perplexed as Garrick. At a time when the search for fast bowlers has been as futile as that for Winston Hall, he is 22 and has 86 wickets in the last three Busta seasons at an average of 19.82, 40 of them this year at 18.83.He has already been chosen for two tours, to Australia and Zimbabwe, but these have been cut short by injuries and his other international appearances have been confined to a few inconclusive one-day matches. The likely reason Mike Findlay and his colleagues reckon he won’t be of value at the highest level is that he isn’t much above medium-pace. Carl Hooper certainly didn’t hide his opinion when he refused to give him a single over in a one-day international against South Africa at Kensington last season.Jeremy has been included among the second batch of students for the Shell Academy but Rudi Webster and his Australian gurus may have to turn him into a modern-day Wes Hall before he can gain recognition. Not everyone’s Busta form is relevant, it seems.Collymore’s similar lack of speed is also the likeliest explanation why he is now categorised as purely a limited-overs specialist. Unfortunately, he simply has to live with the restrictions placed on his action by his mended back and plug away, as he always does.Their little extra pace and penetration brought in, for the first time, Darren Powell and Adam Sanford, both described as stiff by more than one batsman who faced them this season. It was the same term applied to King two seasons back against Zimbabwe and Pakistan when he looked the business. First hobbled by a stress fracture of the foot and then a hernia, he hasn’t been the same since and, like so many fast bowlers of late, has now faded into the background.Lawson, the tall Jamaican who was summoned as a replacement on the tour of Sri Lanka last December, and Tino Best, the bustling little Barbadian, are two 20-year-olds with a turn of speed. But they have been made to wait their turn, probably on the ‘A’ team to tour to England in the summer.Given the present unresponsive nature of West Indian pitches and the quality of the Indian batting, it is not a bad series for young, untried fast bowlers to miss. Their time will come. For Williams and Murray, it has come again and again and again.Elite panel, what about TV?As I understand it, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has appointed elite panels of eight umpires and five match referees to ensure that Test cricket is officiated by the best there is and to eliminate charges of nationalistic bias. It, therefore, defeats its purpose when it leaves decisions on television replays in the hands of whoever the home authority cares to appoint as third umpires, especially now that use of such technology is to be extended. It is a post, more often than not, given to umpires long past their sell-by date or else not good enough to stand in the middle.Time and again, verdicts have contradicted the crystal clear evidence on the screen. The most recent, and most glaring, instance was the red light pressed by the Pakistani, Ahthar Zaidi, to give Sherwin Campbell run out in the first Test in Sharjah when a one-eyed man sitting upside down in front of a cloudy 12-inch black-and-white set could see Campbell was in his ground. With the prospect of more work under the new arrangement, the job assumes greater responsibility. It can no longer be left to home town has-beens.
