Everton make contact to sign Seferovic

This is an exciting time to be an Everton supporter even if you aren’t a keen admirer of the new manager, Rafa Benitez.

Once again, the Toffees are set to flex their financial muscles with big bids lined up for various players.

What’s the word?

Everton are battling a few Premier League teams for the signature of Ben White this summer while La Liga stars Philippe Coutinho and Isco are also on their radar.

It’s evident that the Merseyside outfit want to strengthen in a host of positions but one area they don’t necessarily need someone is up front.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin netted 21 goals last term but that hasn’t deterred Everton from eyeing a move for Haris Seferovic.

Their interest in the Swiss striker was revealed last week and according to a new report from O Jogo (via Sport Witness), they have now been in contact to sign him.

Everton are battling West Ham for his services and have collected references over Seferovic.

Benfica valued him at just €15m (£13m) before the European Championships but following some impressive performances, the Portuguese are now set to demand €25m (£21.4m) instead.

Perfect for Everton

As Calvert-Lewin demonstrated last term, playing with a target man in this Everton side works like a treat.

He scored the highest number of goals by an Everton player since Romelu Lukaku in 2016/17, reigning supreme in the air by winning 4.7 aerial duels per game.

Seven of his 21 strikes came with his head as the England international proved he was capable of beating the vast majority of centre-backs in the air.

Seferovic could bring a similar sort of threat to Goodison Park if he arrives. He won 2.1 aerial duels per game for Benfica last term on his way to scoring a breathtaking 26 times.

That took his overall tally for Benfica to 69 strikes and he has since impressed immensely for Switzerland at Euro 2020.

A huge threat in aerial situations, the forward scored twice with his head during their remarkable victory over World Champions, France, in the last 16.

Describing one of the strikes, commentator Ally McCoist said he was “superb” for the way he rose above some of the game’s elite defenders.

The Toffees have become accustomed to playing with a target man so Seferovic and the squad shouldn’t need too much adjustment time.

Providing Benitez can iron out his inconsistencies, he’d be a wise signing for the Toffees.

Worcestershire still on course to sign Allan Donald despite UCBSA doubts

Reports coming from South Africa that Worcestershire’s attempts to sign Allan Donald as a replacement for their overseas player Andy Bichel had run into trouble have been dismissed by the county as no more than a technical hitch

Reports coming from South Africa that Worcestershire’s attempts to sign Allan Donald as a replacement for their overseas player Andy Bichel had run into trouble have been dismissed by the county as no more than a technical hitch. Worcestershire have gone through the right channels, but the information had not permeated to all levels of the United Cricket Board of South Africa’s administration.Bichel was selected for Australia’s proposed series against Pakistan in June and Donald has been signed on a short-term contract as his replacement. However, Gerald Majola, chief executive of the UCBSA, admitted that he had been unaware of the situation with Worcestershire until the announcement that Donald had signed for them.”There is a very specific clause in the players contracts that precludes them from working for another employer without permission, and Allan hasn’t spoken to me,” Majola said.He was also unaware that Donald has been turning out for Birmingham League club Knowle and Dorridge as a professional. “That’s news to me. He should have sought permission,” Majola said before conceding that it is not out of the question that the bowler might yet play county cricket.”If he asks permission then I will consult the national physiotherapist Craig Smith to get a report on his physical fitness. If Craig says he is fit then we would consider releasing him.”The main concern of the South Africans is that Donald, at 36 years of age, should conserve his energies to spearhead their attack in the World Cup that takes place on home soil in 2003. Similar concerns were expressed when captain Shaun Pollock was allowed to play for Warwickshire this season.Speaking to CricInfo, Worcestershire chief executive Mark Newton is confident that the matter will be resolved shortly. “We have done everything we were supposed to do and expect confirmation of Allan’s availability at any time now.”It appears that Donald himself spoke to the new chairman of selectors, Omar Henry, while the club contacted Brian Basson, the director of cricket operations in South Africa. However, a breakdown in communications at the UCBSA meant that the chief executive was not fully apprised of the situation when making his comments.

Forget Ben White: Arsenal must sign Tomiyasu

Arsenal must beat north London rivals Spurs to the signing of Bologna centre-back Takehiro Tomiyasu this summer.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks have suggested that Arsenal are in talks to sign Ben White from fellow Premier League side Brighton, but it now appears the club have got their eye on another versatile defender.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Mikel Arteta’s Gunners are battling Spurs for the signing of Tomiyasu, and that they are talking to Serie A side Bologna to find an agreement.

A new Koscielny

Just like Koscielny was in his prime, Tomiyasu is as reliable as they come, and doesn’t often let opponents go past him, with his combination of strength, speed and reading of the game.

His current teammate at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara, Mitchell Dijks, dubbed him “very strong” and a “true Japanese warrior” at a press conference, via Tuttosport.

In fact, speaking about the defender’s potential, former Japan coach Alberto Zaccheroni said: “He is a complete player and Bologna got a real bargain with Tomiyasu. He’s a good player and was compared to Maya Yoshida, who has been playing in Europe for a decade. He’s got the quality to be a real star.”

Able to play at centre-back, right-back, left-back and in holding midfield too, the £18m-rated ace’s versatility marks him out as someone who would be a bargain alternative to White.

Reports in recent weeks have suggested that the Brighton defender has a valuation of around the £50m mark, but when you compare the two, Tomiyasu favours well.

According to FBREF, the 6 ft 2 defender is extremely competent in one on one duels – as per 90 minutes, Tomiyasu tackled 56.7% of players who attempted to dribble past him in Serie A, significantly better than White’s 37.5%.

The Japan international also boasts a far better successful pressure percentage (ie closing down opponents), while he is considerably better on the ball too.

He had a higher successful dribble percentage, made progressive carries, and had a better pass accuracy over both short and long passes – and it’s those stats both on and off the ball that are also eerily reminiscent of Koscielny.

A profile done on the Frenchman by Sky Sports back in 2016 read: “His reading of the game, his anticipation of opponents and his positional awareness are excellent. Koscielny is as accomplished with the ball as he is without it, boasting an average pass completion rate of 91.37 per cent in the Premier League over the last two seasons.”

Tomiyasu has everything in his locker to be a new Koscielny for Arsenal and be a better signing for the Gunners than White.

Meanwhile, Arsenal could sign a new Fabregas in this star…

Interino da Ponte garante time ofensivo contra o Corinthians

India in seemingly unstoppable vein

© CricInfo The current Indian team seems to be showing a lot of character and areal hunger to win

Erapalli Prasanna01-Jul-2002
© CricInfoThe current Indian team seems to be showing a lot of character and areal hunger to win. Two victories in consecutive days is indeedsomething to cherish, and hats off to Sourav Ganguly and the boys forgetting off to a wonderful start in the NatWest tri-series. The mostimportant element of the triumphs was that on both occasions Indialost the toss and were forced to chase. Coming under such adversecircumstances – for India are not willing chasers – the wins will bean ideal tonic for a long English summer. But no fan of cricketing heroics and entertainment – myself included -can fail to look at Sri Lanka’s continuing slide of form with morethan a tinge of sadness. Sanath Jayasuriya and his men look a paleshadow of the team that notched up a nine-Test winning streak. Missingace spin bowler Muttiah Muralitharan is understandable, but Sri Lankahas enough talent waiting in the wings to take on the very best. After losing two Tests and two one-dayers in fairly emphatic fashion, the morale of the Sri Lankan team must be close to rock-bottom, andthey are clearly lacking in self-belief. Having won the toss andelected to bat, they were expected to put together a solid battingperformance against a confident Indian team. Unfortunately for them,no Indian supporter would complain about their opponent’s carelessapproach or the modest total they reached. In addition to worrying about his team’s performance, Jayasuriya alsohas to grapple with his own woeful personal form. Yesterday he showedglimpses of the mighty attacking shots that he possesses in hisarmoury – particularly in one fierce slash over square third-man off ZaheerKhan for six – but Jayasuriya yet again was unable to translate itinto a noteworthy innings. In such a situation, when a captain has worries in two departments, failure in one inevitably feeds failure in the other. CharithaBuddhika, brought in specifically to bolster the bowling attack, wasused for just three overs, and Jayasuriya’s captaincy was found wantingon a few other aspects of the game as well. His counterpart, however, looks to me very confident on this tour, andthe series will go a long way in shaping Ganguly into a top-notchcaptain. He seemed yesterday to have a good idea about the strengthsand weaknesses of the bowling at his disposal, and the fieldplacements and bowling changes were very effective. It was good to see Ashish Nehra coming back into the side, primarilybecause it would mean that Ajit Agarkar would not have to take the newball. I have always believed that Agarkar is a far better bowler withthe older ball, over which he has considerably more control. That wasproved amply at the Oval; it was Agarkar who destroyed the Sri Lankantop-order with some purposeful fast bowling. The subtle variations inpace and swing had the Sri Lankan batsmen guessing, leading totheir downfall.
© CricInfoSri Lanka’s seamers Chaminda Vaas and Nuwan Zoysa too bowled extremelywell, and at one stage, India, teetering at 135 for five, could easilyhave slid to defeat. But the Sri Lankans could not break the crucialpartnership between youngsters Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif. Both youngsters play their game with much evident enthusiasm, andtheir haring between the wickets for singles was particularlyendearing. Yuvraj and Kaif, I am sure, will be part of the core of theIndian challenge at the World Cup in 2003.If there were any disappointing factors at all from Sunday’s match, itmust be the performance of Anil Kumble. He seemed to be too keyed up, andthat naturally restricted his bowling abilities. Kumble is anexperienced campaigner, and I am sure he will sort things outquickly. But it is sad to see someone like Harbhajan Singh sacrificed for thesake of the team’s balance. Having said that, Rahul Dravid seems to begetting accustomed to his wicket-keeping tasks, and the catch he tookto dismiss Jayasuriya was an outstanding one. This clearly helps add acertain depth to the Indian batting, and if they continue to play insimilar vein, I do not see any team stopping them in this NatWestseries.
