It was good old-fashioned Test cricket on the second day – an examination of patience, will andconcentration – and Kumar Sangakkara kept Sri Lanka’s nose ahead with a patient century. After Chaminda Vaas and Sangakkara had frustrated India in the first session, the Indian spinners fought back in the middle, drying up the runs and getting importantwickets as a result, but they were denied by a rock-solid Sangakkara, and to alesser extent by the inconsistent umpiring when it came to reviews.Sangakkara’s hundred competed with the review decision that went ThilanSamaraweera’s way as the talking point of the day. India had takentwo wickets, those of Vaas and Mahela Jayawardene, for four runs to reduce Sri Lankato 141 for 4, and should have made it three for 16 when Kumble’s appeal foran lbw against Samaraweera was rejected. In live time, it seemed there mighthave been an inside edge before the ball hit pad, but the replays clearly showed the ball hit the pad first. The impact was 40% inside the mat – as it was with Rahul Dravid when he was given out yesterday – and the ball would have gone on to hit the middle stump three-fourths of the way up. For some reason, though, the original decision was upheld, which left the Indians irate. Sachin Tendulkar, who had injured his elbow earlier, even signalled “out” from the dressing room. Samaraweera was on 5, then, andwent on to score 35, and more importantly, put together a 60-run partnershipwith Sangakkara at a crucial juncture.Nothing should take away from Sangakkara, though, who curbed his stroke-playing instincts, realising that his wicket would have been critical. He made a dicey start in the morning with an uppish boundary past a diving Rohit Sharma at point, but was determined to make amends for his ordinary series till then. Before this Test, his average in 2008 was close to 24. Twice in the previous Tests, Zaheer Khan had caught him in the crease, making him play at legcutters. This time, though, Sangakkara consciouslygot on to the front foot, especially against Zaheer. Once he saw Zaheer off, there were no signs of struggle, and he was severe on anything loose.A big chance arrived for India when Sangakkara, on 34 then, edged a faster onefrom Kumble, but Rahul Dravid failed to latch on to what would have been aspectacular slip catch. To rub salt in, Sangakkara came up with an exquisitecover-drive off Harbhajan in the next over. The run machineKumar Sangakkara’s unbeaten 107 was his second Test hundred against India. His first came during India’s previous visit in 2001.It was also Sangakkara’s second ton at the P Sara Stadium, where he presently averages over 100.Sangakkara’s Test average of 55.39 is the best among Sri Lankan batsmen who have played more than one Test. He scores over 85 runs per innings when playing as a specialist batsman.Starting with his 287 against South Africa in July 2006, his highest score, Sangakkara averages an astounding 97.84 in 26 innings. With the 17th run of his 107, Sangakkara became only the third batsman to score 2000 runs without being bowled in a Test innings. Sangakkara was last out bowled in April 2006, and has not been dismissed in that manner ever since. Shivanarine Chanderpaul and Javed Miandad are the two others to achieve this feat. Read more on Chanderpaul in the It Figures blog. After lunch India came out determined to make runs hard to get. In the firstsession Sri Lanka had managed 100, while in the first 11 overs of thesecond they got only 23. Harbhajan kept bowling outside off, whileKumble – from round the stumps – got purchase from the pitch. Vaas, thenight-watchman who took ownership of the house in the first session, wasstrangled: he survived two close calls in one Kumble over, and inHarbhajan’s next, lobbed an easy catch to extra cover, falling two runs short of achieving the double of 3000 runs and 300 wickets. Harbhajan thenbeat Jayawardene with an offbreak, and for once Jayawardene got the reviewcall wrong. He was given out lbw and that’s how it stayed. That was when Sangakkara dug deeper, not falling for India’s tactics, scoring 27 runs in the middle session. Bar one shot, he was a picture ofdiscipline. Even that shot was perhaps a statement – I can hit those, but Idon’t want to. To a full, wide offbreak from Harbhajan – a similar one hadbeen called wide earlier – Sangakkara went down on one knee and swept tomidwicket for four. As he approached his 17th century, the Indians kept gettingmeaner on him. In moving from 76 to 99, he took 56 balls, and hit only one boundary.India suffered injury setbacks through the day. VVS Laxman had twisted his ankle in fielding practice before the start of the play and didn’t take the field. After tea Ishant Sharma became the third casualty when he tumbled during his follow-though, not for the first time in the series, hurt his hip, and had to go off the field. Still, the bowlers put up a brave show overall. TheHarbhajan-Kumble duo worked well in the middle session, and Zaheer bowled atesting spell after tea, giving away 21 runs in eight overs and eventuallygetting Samaraweera out with a delivery that bounced and left the batsman.Tillakaratne Dilshan, as usual, came out full of intent, and in partnership withSangakkara started to break free. For 12 overs at one pointtowards stumps, Sri Lanka didn’t score a boundary, getting only 27 runs, butonce Dilshan cut loose things began to look ominous for India. But Kumble, unfortunate not to have got a wicket till then, struck at the right timewith a topspinner. Dilshan asked for the review, but he had been caught plumb. Given the tendency of lower orders to collapse dramatically, and also that Sri Lanka have to bat last, it would be brave to say that Sri Lanka have a clear advantage.

Liverpool boosted by Curtis Jones return

Liverpool have received an injury boost ahead of this weekend’s Premier League clash with Burnley, with Curtis Jones set to be available for the game.

The Lowdown: Jones missing for Norwich win

The Reds won 3-0 at Norwich City on Saturday, but they had to do it without Jones, who suffered a concussion in the friendly win over Osasuna.

Instead, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita made up the midfield, as Jurgen Klopp’s side cruised to victory.

The Latest: Youngster back for Burnley

Liverpool have been boosted by the news that Jones will be available for Saturday’s visit of Burnley, however, having recovered from his setback.

That’s according to the Liverpool Echo, who also claim that Jordan Henderson and Thiago should be in contention, after playing in a behind-the-scenes friendly at Anfield on Sunday.

The Verdict: Impact

Jones might not yet be a regular starter for Liverpool, but he is an immense young talent who chipped in with four goals and five assists last season. Goal involvements from midfield have often been lacking at Anfield, meaning Jones’ ability to link with the front three is a big boost.

Having him back only increases the midfield options at Klopp’s disposal, giving him an enviable selection headache ahead of the game.

It could be that Fabinho returns against Burnley, perhaps in place of the disappointing Oxlade-Chamberlain, while Keita’s impressive pre-season could keep him in the starting XI. Will Klopp swap experience for exuberance and give Jones a place over Milner?

Journo claims Wolves value Traore highly and are happy to keep him

Express and Star journalist Luke Hatfield believes that Wolves are more than happy to keep hold of winger Adama Traore this summer.

Traore featured for Wolves on 41 occasions last season, scoring three goals and providing three assists, but has been linked with a move away from Molineux this summer.

The Daily Mail reported that should Harry Kane leave Tottenham in this transfer window, then Wolves are braced for an approach from Spurs for Traore.

The Spain international has two years left on his current deal with Wolves and Hatfield believes that the club value him highly, telling Football FanCast: “Yeah, I think he’s very much in a similar boat to Ruben Neves, in the fact that Wolves obviously value him highly, if they were to sell, they’d want a big fee and if no one’s willing to meet that then they’re happy to keep hold of him.

“The only difference is with Traore is that his contract still hasn’t been signed so he’s slowly running that down and it puts Wolves in a weaker and weaker position regarding him.”

The winger played the full 90 minutes of Wolves’ first Premier League match of the new campaign against Leicester City, and also featured in pre-season, so is clearly in the plans of new manager Bruno Lage.

Lage and Wolves have been active in the market this summer, signing five new players, with Jose Sa, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Yerson Mosquera, Louie Moulden and Francisco Trincao all arriving at Molineux.

PCB allow Shabbir to train at NCA

With cricket boards placing several restrictions on where the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL) can train, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has shown some leniency by allowing one of its ICL recruits, fast bowler Shabbir Ahmed, to train at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore. All 16 of Pakistan’s ICL-contracted players have been banned from playing domestic cricket, thereby ruling themselves out of national selection. But apparently no such ban exists on their using board facilities.”There was never any ban on Shabbir Ahmed to practice. He is only banned from representing Pakistan in Tests and ODIs and from first-class cricket,” a senior board official said. However, Shafqat Naghmi, the PCB’s chief operating officer, reiterated that the board wasn’t going to soften its stance on ICL players, saying that the ban stands.”Any player who has represented Pakistan can practice here but that does not mean we are thinking about changing our policy on the ICL,” Naghmi said. “It remains the same. When the ICC recognises it we will also adopt a softer line.”Shabbir had a long session at the nets, preparing for the next season of the ICL. “I am preparing for the start of the new ICL season this year and so far no one has told me not to practice here,” Shabbir said. “Right now I am here to train and get tips from Aaqib Javed and Geoff Lawson who are at the academy.”

Somerset struggle to make title claim

Andrew McGlashan reports on the second day of the Championship clash between Somerset and Lancashire at Taunton

The destination of the Championship pennant is still anyone’s guess, but Somerset didn’t help their own cause at Taunton. Strange captaincy, a flattening surface and some stubborn lower-order contributions from Lancashire all played their part, while events elsewhere remain critically important. Lancashire ground out a lead of 46 before removing Justin Langer and Marcus Trescothick cheaply as the home side closed 20 ahead.Somerset have been handed a real chance by Nottinghamshire’s collapse at Trent Bridge, but couldn’t make the most of the opportunity. The tone was set when Langer opted not to open up with his two strike bowlers at the start of play, then he and Trescothick both played poor shots to depart before the deficit was wiped off. Batting conditions were far easier than yesterday, shown by the fact that it took a lot of hard work – and the second new ball – to end Lancashire’s innings, the last three wickets adding 107. All the more reason to use your best bowlers first.Andrew Caddick ended with four wickets, but his second two required much more toil than his opening brace on the first evening. It was a bizarre decision from Langer to hold Caddick and Charl Willoughby back for nearly an hour, with the early-morning cloud cover yet to burn off, instead opening with Alfonso Thomas and Steffan Jones. Langer is a deep thinker about the game; the feeling was this was a case of him thinking a little too much.Luke Sutton, who began his career at Somerset in 1997, batted more than three-and-a-half hours for his 162-ball 49, taking Lancashire to the brink of a second batting point before he was left stranded, but along with Glen Chapple and Tom Smith produced a lead that appeared unlikely at 141 for 7. While Somerset’s focus has been on the title, Lancashire’s is very much on survival. They are nearly there – an extra batting point would have helped – although proceedings at Hove will still have a bearing. If they win here all concerns will be gone, however that will prove hard work on a surface now offering very little. They made a good start when Oliver Newby removed Langer for 6, edging a wild drive to first slip. It completed a strange day for the Somerset captain, who showed his frustration as he went into the dressing room. James Hildreth and Zander de Bruyn carried Somerset ahead, but they will need a substantial lead to bowl at.In the early absence of Caddick, Mal Loye and nightwatchman Gary Keedy were able to add runs at a comfortable rate, scoring at almost a run-a-minute during the first hour. Loye hasn’t been a regular in Lancashire’s side this season, relegated to the second XI during his benefit year. However, Faf du Plessis’ return to South Africa offered him a chance for this match and he made the most of slightly more favourable batting conditions with his first Championship half-century since June 2007.Caddick eventually came into the attack after 12 overs, and right on cue removed Keedy in his first over as the he edged low to second slip to end a stand of 69. Langer persisted with Jones and was eventually rewarded when Steven Croft shouldered arms and watched the ball clip his off stump. Caddick could have had his fourth wicket, but Loye’s edge to slip on 52 came from a no-ball. It didn’t prove too costly as Loye was given lbw off Ian Blackwell shortly after lunch, even though he pushed a long way forward.Chapple made a useful 36 before Langer atoned for his drop with a good, low catch at first slip an over later, but still Somerset couldn’t wrap up the innings. Smith stood tall and played correctly until Caddick finally found his outside edge with the new ball. The lead was small, but could yet be crucial.

Ismael must move for Chalobah

While life at West Bromwich Albion could not have got off to a much better start for Valerien Ismael, with his side scoring 11 goals and picking up 10 points from their opening four Championship fixtures, with just a few days remaining of the summer transfer window, there would still appear work to be done for the Frenchman.

Indeed, the departure of Romaine Sawyers on a season-long loan to Stoke City, as well as summer signing Matt Clarke being ruled out for around six weeks due to a hamstring injury, has left the 45-year-old lacking in depth in the middle of the park – with only Jake Livermore and Alex Mowatt being viable options in central midfield.

As such, it would appear extremely wise for Ismael to bring in another body in the position prior to Tuesday’s transfer deadline, with one player appearing to be a standout candidate for the club – Trevoh Chalobah.

Ismael must move

While the 22-year-old was heavily linked with a move to West Brom earlier in the transfer window, with some outlets going as far as to claim that the midfielder’s switch to The Hawthorns was all but done, Chalobah was a surprise inclusion in both the UEFA Super Cup final and Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Crystal Palace.

However, not only did the £3.15m-rated man simply make up the numbers for the Blues in these two fixtures, he starred for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Indeed, over his 120 minutes on the pitch in the penalty shootout victory over Villarreal, Chalobah – being deployed at centre-back – made two tackles, five interceptions and six clearances, as well as winning five of his eight duels, completing 124 of his 130 passes and touching the ball a whopping 148 times.

These returns saw the man Paul Lambert dubbed a “complete” player earn a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.6, ranking him as Chelsea’s joint third-best performer in the European final.

Rather remarkably, the £12k-per-week midfielder topped this performance in the 3-0 Premier League win over Palace, making two tackles, two clearances and bagging himself a goal – a display which earned the 22-year-old a SofaScore match rating of 8.1, the second-best of any player to feature in the game.

And, while it could be argued that Tuchel may be reluctant to sanction the temporary departure of Chalobah following these impressive performances, should the Blues go on to land Jules Kounde in the coming days, the German boss could well be tempted into a deal.

As such, should an opportunity present itself, it is obvious that Ismael must do all he can to secure the signing of the 6ft 3 midfielder, as he would be able to be deployed in the place of the injured Clarke in the Albion defence, as well as in central midfield upon the defender’s return.

However, there are still a number of things that would have to fall into place for a move to be viable for West Brom, but it is undeniable that Chalobah would be a fantastic addition to the Frenchman’s side, with Kevin Phillips dubbing the potential signing of the youngster as an “amazing coup.”
