Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa is being targeted by Barcelona as a potential replacement for Ronald Koeman.

What’s the story?

According to Spanish publication Cuatro, the Argentine is among a number of targets being considered by the La Liga giants as they contemplate getting rid of the Dutchman amid a disastrous start to the new season – they’ve managed just two wins from their opening five league games.

It’s suggested that, having been on Barcelona’s list years ago, Bielsa’s stance could change on leaving Leeds if an offer came in which was too good to turn down.

Fans would be gutted

The level of affinity and love that Leeds fans have for Bielsa is unquestionable, with the 66-year-old a firm favourite in Yorkshire for the way he has embraced the city and brought the Whites back to the big time of the Premier League.

Leeds enjoyed a superb first season back in the top-flight last term, finishing in the top ten and picking up some notable scalps along the way, not least a fantastic victory over eventual Premier League champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

After Spurs decided to sack Jose Mourinho before the end of the campaign, Carlton Palmer suggested that Bielsa could be tempted by a switch to north London.

He said: “You want to better yourself. You want to get the top jobs, just like players want to go to top clubs, so it’d be a fantastic opportunity for him.

“If Spurs come knocking, that’s a different ball game. That’s a great career opportunity for him. I’d be very surprised if Tottenham came knocking and he wasn’t prepared to go.”

While moving to Spurs would be one thing, Barcelona are a completely different kettle of fish – one of the best clubs in the world and regularly challenging for major trophies both home and abroad.

Make no mistake about it, more than any new signing they could potentially make, ensuring that Bielsa remains at Elland Road for the long-term must be Andrea Radrizzani’s biggest priority.

The fact that pundits are talking of Bielsa going to one of the Premier League’s ‘big-six’ clubs should be seen as a compliment and recognition for the incredible work he has done at Elland Road, not an insult.

However, it could raise questions as to whether the 66-year-old could move to an elite European club sooner rather than later, and the potential opening at Barcelona could present him with an opportunity to do just that.

It’s exactly why Radrizzani must avoid making an unforgivable howler and ensure that the Argentine stays put at Elland Road. Leeds fans would be absolutely devastated if he doesn’t.

Former Indian captain Gundappa Viswanath has been chosen for the CK Nayudu lifetime achievement award, the highest honour the Indian board can bestow on a former player. It will be presented to him on February 18 in Mumbai.The CK Nayudu award comes with a trophy, a citation and a cash prize of Rs. 15 lakh (approx. US$ 38,000).Viswanath has been called the “greatest batsman” India has produced by Sunil Gavaskar, one of the most prolific scorers in the history of Test cricket. Viswanath shot into prominence with a double century on his first-class debut for Mysore (as the Karnataka team was referred to then) in 1967-68. Picked in the Indian side in the Kanpur Test of the 1969-70 series against Australia, Viswanath got a duck in the first innings, but made up with a magnificent 137 in the second.Viswanath played 91 Tests for India, scoring more than 6000 runs at an average of over 40. But he is most appreciated for the fact that he scored his big runs when India needed them most. His match-winning 97 against a powerful West Indies team that included the rampaging Andy Roberts in 1974-75, stands out. But his other knocks came in equally trying conditions – 124 in Madras against West Indies in 1978-79, 83 and 79 against New Zealand on a greentop at Christchurch in 1975-76.Viswanath also served as vice-president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association and had a stint as chairman of national selectors from 1992-96. علاقة تشيلسي مع برشلونة جيدة ومن الممكن أن تحسم صفقة دي يونج رغم استمرار رغبة مانشستر يونايتد في ضم اللاعب الهولندي الدولي والذي لن يستسلم بسهولة، ولكن هذا ما اعترف خوان لابورتا به أن العلاقة رائعة مع، تود بوهلي.

بوهلي أثناء هذا الاجتماع الذي تم عقده في أحد المطاعم في “برشلونة”، أكد لإدارة النادي الكتالوني أنه سيسمح لرحيل سيزار أزبيليكويتا وماركوس ألونسو إذا كان هناك اتفاق مالي بينهما، لكن في المقابل لم يكن هناك أي تحرك من جانب تشيلسي رسميًا لضم دي يونج.

ويأتي السبب وراء ذلك أن تشيلسي يركز في الوقت الحالي على ضم مدافعين نظرًا لرحيل أنطونيو روديجر إلى ريال مدريد وأندرياس كريستنسن إلى برشلونة ولم يكن هناك تعاقدات دفاعية سوى مع مدافع نابولي السابق، كاليدو كوليبالي.

يتمنى برشلونة أن يدخل تشيلسي في السباق مع مانشستر يونايتد بعرض رسمي حتى يفاضل بينهما ويختار الأفضل له لبيع دي يونج وتحقيق أعلى استفادة مادية ممكنة.

Lee Johnson has confirmed that McGeady missed the 4-0 defeat to Portsmouth with an ankle injury.

The Black Cats head coach, via The Chronicle’s James Hunter, cited an ‘ankle problem’ for his absence and did not specify how long he will be out of action.

Fans will be gutted

Sunderland fans will surely be gutted by this news. For starters, they missed his quality against Pompey as Leon Dajaku and Aiden O’Brien struggled at Fratton Park, recording SofaScore ratings of 6.4 and 6.1 respectively – managing one key pass between them.

McGeady, at the age of 35, has been one of the club’s standouts in League One this season. He has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.21, producing two goals and three assists in nine starts, whilst averaging an impressive 2.6 key passes per game. This highlights his ability on the ball and outlines why he could have made a difference against Portsmouth.

Speaking after a game in 2019, ex-Black Cats boss Jack Ross lauded the Irishman’s quality.  He told the Chronicle Live: 

“I thought he was bright today. He is the type of player who responds well to other players coming into the club and the challenge of proving the quality he has.

“In the first half I thought we were too short and too narrow in terms of how we made the pitch, so in the second half we widened and lengthened it a bit and that’s where the goal comes from. You had the execution of the pass from Grant [Leadbitter], but then you need that bit of special quality and Aiden has done that a lot for us this season.”

This aligns with his form this campaign and illustrates why fans will be gutted at this injury update from Johnson.

The fact that no timeline has been given on his return could also cause them to worry as it remains to be seen how long he will be out for. Although, after their clash with Gillingham in midweek, Sunderland will have two weeks off because of the international break.

That could give the Irishman time to get himself fit and ready for action.

كشفت تقارير عن اقتراب نادي الهلال السعودي من تجديد عقد أندريه كاريلو لاعب الفريق الأول لكرة القدم.

ويستعد الهلال لمواجهة نظيره ألميريا الإسباني اليوم الأحد في مباراة ودية، في معسكره التحضيري ببرمنجهام.

ووفقًا لصحيفة “الرياضية السعودية” فإن إدارة نادي الهلال اقتربت من تجديد عقد البيروفي أندريه كاريلو، لاعب الفريق الأول لكرة القدم، لمدة موسم واحد حتى نهاية 2024، بناء على رغبة الأرجنتيني رامون دياز، المدير الفني للفريق.

وأوضحت أن إدارة الهلال برئاسة فهد بن نافل تواصلت مع وكيل أعمال اللاعب، بهدف تقديم عرض لتجديد عقده، وأصبحت المفاوضات في مرحلة متقدمة.

Chris Gayle has dismissed suggestions that matches in the current one-day series against England will be affected by the ongoing dispute between players and the West Indies board, and also insisted the tour of England which follows will go ahead.”There wasn’t any threat made to boycott any games to my knowledge,” he said. “They are making a bit of progress [in talks between the board and the Players’ Association], which is good. If the games weren’t supposed to be going on I’d be at home cocking up my legs now, but I’m here to play cricket so the games will definitely be going on.”We have to come to an understanding with each other between the team, the players and the board and I think there is some sort of communication going on. Things are looking pretty good, I’m sure everyone will benefit from the outcome and the cricket will definitely go on rather than go into a dispute again.”Earlier today Cricinfo reported that up to five players could refuse to tour England, but Gayle denied that was the case. “The tour of England would definitely go ahead,” he said. “I will be there, and once all the other players are fit and selected, they also will be there. . .right now, things are looking good.”
