Harbhajan ensures India's cup overflows

Two rapturous celebrations by Harbhajan Singh told the story this evening. The first was when he bowled Thilina Kandamby, the second when he sealed India’s first finals win in Sri Lanka this decade.Even with seven wickets down, and the required rate touching 10 an over, India were not taking victory for granted until Sri Lanka’s latest version of the Ice Man was dismissed. Sri Lanka were under the gun when Kandamby walked in and once he got going in that beguiling manner – composed yet adventurous – and India’s fielding fell to pieces, a home victory seemed a distinct possibility. In the 44th over, India were put out of their frustration when Harbhajan struck in the first over of the batting Powerplay. Thirteen deliveries later, he took out Ajantha Mendis, cueing hysterical scenes from the Indian team as fireworks lit up the night sky. It was his first five-wicket haul since March 2006, and his best performance in a tournament final. In the end, India’s victory over Sri Lanka was a surprisingly tense one, considering that they would have rated their chances very highly after Sachin Tendulkar’s 44th one-day century carried them to 319. A sloppy fielding performance in which two sitters were dropped, a slew of run-out opportunities went begging and another excellent innings from Kandamby, combined to give India a mighty scare. The fielding was utterly disappointing. Virat Kohli put down Sanath Jayasuriya at point, and the muffed chance against Kandamby – a dolly that Yusuf Pathan made a meal of when the batsman was on 36 – followed. MS Dhoni had a poor time behind the stumps, twice returning stray throws when Kandamby was struggling. Sides aspiring to be No. 1 can ill-afford such appalling displays, as Dhoni reminded.”You’ve got to learn from your mistakes. We made quite a few today and as a team we didn’t field well,” he said. “Thanks to characters in the side, we ended up on the winning side. It’s very special to us. We are winning here after a long time. If you are the second best team, you can’t make these kind of mistakes.”This match nearly slipped out of India’s hands, but Harbhajan struck at crucial junctures. Sri Lanka began their innings needing to score at 6.40 runs per over to win. Tillakaratne Dilshan and Jayasuriya responded strongly and scored at a fast clip. The two kept the foot firmly down on the accelerator and the runs came in a torrent. The bowling change brought a wicket, and it was Harbhajan who benefited when Dilshan went after one that skidded on and took the inside edge. A red-faced Harbhajan let loose a war cry, pumped that he had come on and immediately limited Dilshan’s demolition to a 29-ball 42. From 64 for no loss in 7.4 overs, Sri Lanka slumped to 85 for 3 in 11.Harbhajan has been India’s best spinner for as long as one can remember in limited-overs cricket, but mostly through drying up runs. His economy-rate has generally been good but wickets haven’t always been forthcoming. Tonight he got wickets when it mattered. It was a long overdue performance. Tonight he combined some refreshing air on the ball with an understanding of Sri Lankan pitches. He got Dilshan with a slider, scrambled seam being the key, and Mahela Jayawardene with a doosra. Then he delivered the killer blow, bowling Kandamby and getting Lasith Malinga first ball.India owed much to Suresh Raina too, who had a superb outing. A tidy offspinner with a classical round-arm action, Raina churned out a clever mix of slower balls and cutters. His slow loopy bowling confused the batsmen – Kumar Sangakkara should have been stumped on 21 but Dhoni fumbled – but he also got enough turn to keep them guessing. In his first six overs he gave only 18 runs and bowled 19 dot balls, 16 of them to Kandamby. When he came back for the 41st over, Sri Lanka needed 80 from 60 balls, and Raina gave three singles and a leg bye. Then he struck in the 43rd over, as Chamara Kapugedera edged a quicker one.Sangakkara pinpointed that dismissal as the turning point. “We were in it until Kapugedera got out,” he said. “Kandamby and Kapugedera showed a lot of character in the middle order to get us close, but it was disappointing to lose, given the way those two were chasing.”Raina’s bowling from around the stumps – which he perfected in South Africa during the IPL this year – has proved useful and he has given the team an extra dimension. In between overs 40 and 44, India allowed Sri Lanka 18 runs and took a wicket. That was a crucial passage.Harbhajan, and several others, would have had vivid memories of this venue four years ago when they lost another final to Sri Lanka. This wasn’t any ordinary win; this was India’s first tournament success in Sri Lanka since 1998. India had been thumped in Saturday’s dress rehearsal, their top order had been shaky, and they were up against history. This was retribution, at some level, for years of struggle in finals against this opposition. Points in the bag, yes, but there’s still plenty of room for improvement and higher gears to be reached if they are to challenge teams in the Champions Trophy.

WBA predicted starting XI vs Blackpool

After a disappointing 1-0 defeat against Huddersfield Town at the weekend, West Brom are back in league action this evening with a clash against Blackpool away from home.

With club captain Jake Livermore now serving a three-game ban after picking up a red card in the defeat against Huddersfield, he will be unavailable for the next few fixtures.

West Brom also have the likes of Dara O’Shea and Kean Bryan out with injuries. Taking this into account here is how we feel West Brom could line up tonight with three changes expected.

In goal considering how he’s played in almost every league game so far this season, we can see Sam Johnstone will keep his place in the team on this occasion.

For a back three, we think Baggies boss Valerien Ismael will go for the same trio that started against Huddersfield with Kyle Bartley, Cedric Kipre and Matt Clarke all in to try and keep a clean sheet this evening.

In midfield, with Livermore suspended we think Ismael will go with Robert Snodgrass and Jason Molumby, with Alex Mowatt, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £13k-per-week according to Salary Sport, dropping down to the substitutes bench.

At wing-back, we think Connor Townsend will keep his place on the left-hand side with Taylor Gardner-Hickman also retaining his place on the right-hand side.

For the attack, we can see Ismael sticking with Karlan Grant and Matt Phillips but bringing Callum Robinson, who managed to score in Republic of Ireland’s 3-0 win over Luxembourg during the recent international break, back in with Grady Diangana dropping out after he failed to impress and even have one clear shot at goal against Huddersfield.

West Brom are on an incredibly spotty run of form at the moment with three wins, one draw and four defeats under their belt in their eight previous league outings.

Thus, Ismael and everyone else at the Midlands club will undoubtedly be hoping that the team will be able to produce a strong performance and pick up all three points so they aren’t in danger of potentially missing out on a promotion place by the end of the season.

Joel Ward was poor against Leeds United

Crystal Palace slumped to their second consecutive defeat after Raphinha snatched all three points for Leeds United with an injury-time penalty in their Premier League clash at Elland Road.

The Eagles were looking to bounce back from their disappointing result against Aston Villa over the weekend and looked to be heading home with a point until referee Kevin Friend pointed to the spot in the 91st minute.

Summer signing Marc Guehi was adjudged to have handled the ball following an in-swinging corner, with the decision confirmed after the Video Assistant Referee advised Friend to go to the pitch-side monitor.

The result perhaps wasn’t a fair reflection of the game, though, with Palace having the better opportunities to win the closely fought encounter.

Substitute Christian Benteke had two golden opportunities to put the visitors ahead after Wilfried Zaha clipped a delightful ball to the back post before the Belgium international headed wide, and Illan Meslier just about kept out his effort after connecting with a long ball upfield.

However, the capital club’s backline looked suspect throughout the 90 minutes, not just when Guehi gifted Leeds a golden opportunity to claim their fourth top-flight victory of the campaign.

Experienced right-back Joel Ward struggled to cope with the pace of Dan James following the break, with the former Manchester United youngster playing two key passes and creating one big chance.

As per SofaScore, the 32-year-old was awarded a match rating of just 6.5 out of 10, the second-lowest total received by any of his teammates who featured from the off on Tuesday night, letting Vieira down as a result.

And when looking at his underlying numbers, it’s easy to understand why. Ward achieved a measly passing accuracy of 61%, won just 50% of his duels and had only 39 touches, one fewer than goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.

These figures highlight his underwhelming display, and Football.London reporter Mark Wyatt was equally disappointing with his sub-par showing.

“Solid outing in the first 45 minutes from Ward other than being booked, which means he’ll miss the next game against Manchester United. Less influential in the second period as Dan James got the beating of him on a couple of occasions,” wrote Wyatt after awarding him a lowly 5 out of 10.

With winnable fixtures against Everton, Southampton and Watford on the horizon for Palace, Vieira will be hoping one of his most experienced and reliable campaigners can get back to his best as soon as possible.

Chanderpaul epic sets up Durham

A double-century from Shivnarine Chanderpaul ensured Durham will end the season as the only unbeaten side in the English first-class season

George Dobell at New Road25-Sep-2009
ScorecardA double-century from Shivnarine Chanderpaul ensured Durham will end the season as the only unbeaten side in the English first-class season.Chanderpaul, who compiled the sixth double-century of his first-class career, provided the foundations for an enormous total of 634 for 8. It was the third highest score in Durham’s first-class history and the fourth highest total ever conceded by Worcestershire.Chanderpaul advanced on his double with the sedate certainty of a glacier. Resuming on 100 overnight, the next century took him 81 overs and included just nine boundaries. There were times during the day when the nearby Malvern hills appeared to be moving faster. It was a worthy innings, however. With conditions overcast and the bowlers performing substantially better than the previous day, batting was far from straightforward. Chanderpaul, therefore, contented himself with leaving almost everything outside off-stump, watchful defence against anything straight and a series of singles nudged off the hip. It was not the most thrilling innings. But it was effective. Durham, wearied by their travails this season, were hoping not to put their bowlers through another work-out on the third-day and were content to simply occupy the crease. Whatever happens on the final day of the first-class season, they will set a record for the largest winning margin in the County Championship since the advent of two-division cricket.Watching Chanderpaul – or Chandercrawl as one press-box wag labelled him – in such mood is a little like watching erosion in action. You know there is a powerful force in operation, but it moves so slowly it’s hard to appreciate. Certainly he is desperately difficult to dislodge when established: he’s now passed 150 11 times in first-class cricket and only three of those innings have ended in his dismissal. The hosts bowled far better than the previous day, however. Durham were made to work much harder for their runs and limited Chanderpaul to just 28 runs in the first session.Worcestershire picked up a couple of wickets, too. Shortly after Dale Benkenstein cut the boundary to bring up his century – his fifth of another profitable season – he was caught behind prodding at a good delivery on off stump, before Ian Blackwell was trapped in front as he played across a beauty that pitched on off and would have hit leg. Phil Mustard’s attempt to increase the pace with some lavish drives soon resulted in an edge to the keeper.Still, there wasn’t much bite in the bowling. On a pitch where Gareth Andrew rated 300 as a good score, Worcestershire conceded 500 for the fifth time this season and came within an ace of seeing five bowlers concede 100 each for just the second time in the club’s history. For poor Richard Jones it was the fifth time in six completed innings that he has recorded such an unwelcome milestone.Liam Plunkett produced Durham’s most fluent batting of the day. After a sketchy start, he drove fairly well and dealt with the short ball without discomfort. This was his third Championship half-century of the season and it took an outstanding diving catch at mid-wicket to dismiss him.Resuming 278 behind on first innings, Worcestershire’s hopes of saving the game were boosted by the news that Steve Harmison may not bowl in the rest of the match as he has a swollen knee. He did take the field, however, and Durham will make a decision in the morning.Daryl Mitchell continued his good form, crunching five fours in the 12 overs before stumps. Stephen Moore’s unhappy season ended with a whimper, however, after he missed a straight delivery from Blackwell. For a man with so much ability, and a man mentioned in England selection meetings only weeks ago, Moore’s Championship average of just 27 this season is hard to fathom and bitterly disappointing.

KP will have to fight for place – Swann

Kevin Pietersen is finally returning to the England squad but according to team-mate Graeme Swann is not guaranteed a starting place in the team

Kevin Pietersen is finally returning to the England squad but according to team-mate Graeme Swann is not guaranteed a starting place in the team.He has been missing since the second Ashes Test in July, recovering from surgery to his right Achilles tendon, but arrives in South Africa on Tuesday before joining up with the squad on Wednesday.Pietersen will bring much-needed experience to England as they begin a two-and-a-half month tour of South Africa, who are ranked the No.1 Test team. Following an encouraging display in the Champions Trophy and a bright start to this tour in his absence, the England selectors have a difficult task fitting Pietersen back into the side. While Pietersen has been sidelined, Eoin Morgan and Jonathan Trott performed promisingly and demonstrated a depth that Swann admits could challenge Pietersen’s place. Morgan has already impressed against South Africa with a 34-ball 67 in the Champions Trophy and made 67 in England’s warm-up victory against Eagles last week. Trott meanwhile made 85 in the same game following his debut century in the last Ashes Test.”I don’t think it’s a squad that’s sitting there desperately hoping that other people turn up because I think we’re all getting on well, we’ve got a very positive outlook and we’ve had some good performances,” Swann told PA. “So Kev’s just going to add to that, I don’t think he’s going to change it. You never know, he might even have to fight for his place when he gets here.”With Andrew Flintoff frequently missing through injury over the last four years England have been used to coping without key players. “Whenever you lose one or two of your big players, everyone else has got to step up to the plate and perform,” Swann added. “Last summer they did, that last Test match everyone was saying that it had to be Andrew Flintoff’s massive last game and it was Stuart Broad who took the limelight – he stepped up to the plate.”We can’t be reliant on one or two players, that’s unhealthy for the team and unhealthy for English cricket. Thankfully at the minute, everyone’s chipping in in their own respective areas, which is a more healthy state to be in.”England play their final warm-up match against a strong South Africa A side in Bloemfontein on Tuesday ahead of two Twenty20 internationals against South Africa at the weekend.

Dave Harrison could replace Marcel Brands

Everton are a club at a crossroads at this moment in time, with the departure of former director of football Marcel Brands sparking an intriguing new chapter in their history.

What’s the story?

Under the Dutchman’s watchful eye, the Toffees embarked on a rather haphazard spending spree over the last three years, although he cannot be solely blamed for all of their misfortune.

However, with Brands now out the door, talk has turned to who could replace the 59-year-old in the boardroom.

And The Athletic’s Everton reporter Patrick Boyland has provided an update into the ongoing situation, suggesting the popular head of football operations Dave Harrison could fill the current void.

“There is an expectation the club’s respected head of football operations Dave Harrison will fill part of the void left by Brands as long as the strategic review takes place, ” he wrote alongside colleague Greg O’Keeffe.

“A popular, long-standing member of staff, Harrison is seen as a safe pair of hands and has experience in negotiations and other logistical aspects.”

Everton fans will be buzzing

Brands arrived on Merseyside back in 2018 after cultivating an enviable reputation for himself at PSV Eindhoven after several years worth of good work in his homeland.

Everton’s new owner Farhad Moshiri provided substantial funds for the transfer chief to improve the first-team squad, yet improvements on the pitch scarcely failed to materialise.

The likes of Alex Iwobi, Andre Gomes and Moise Kean all arrived under Brands’ doomed reign for big fees without elevating the Goodison Park outfit’s fortunes, resulting in league finishes of 8th, 12th and 10th during his time at the club.

As a result, large sections of Everton’s fanbase will be delighted to learn of Boyland’s latest behind-the-scenes revelation.

News that a ‘respected’ and ‘popular’ member of staff who already knows the club and understands the direction it wants to go in and what needs to be improved is expected to step into Brands’ shoes will fill them with hope and confidence for the months ahead.

Following a first win since September, it finally looks as though proceedings are moving in the right direction for the Toffees. They should be left buzzing as a result.
