Are Liverpool The First To Feel The Pinch?

It’s been a turbulent weekend in Merseyside as Liverpool’s frustrating lack of activity on transfer deadline day was swiftly followed by a demoralising defeat at home to Arsenal. Fans sat glued to Sky Sports News with high expectations as they watched the senior figures of Charlie Adam, Jay Spearing and Andy Carroll vacate the club. However, they were left dejected upon learning that no new faces would be arriving and showed now mercy by venting their frustrations on online forums and social networking sites.

Clint Dempsey was widely tipped to join the Rodger’s revelation but Liverpool were only able to offer a fraction of Fulham’s relatively insignificant £6m asking price. The financial implications of the transfer spree instigated under Kenny Dalglish have quite clearly placed a hefty barricade on the clubs path to glory, but do Liverpool stand alone with their new conservative transfer policy or are they the first of many clubs about to suffer the consequences of overspending in the market?

In the aftermath of intense criticism and speculation surrounding the actions of key individuals – most notably managing director Ian Ayre – principal owner John W Henry today revealed an open letter to fans outlining his own disappointment. The lengthy statement reinforced their commitment and aspirations for the club but failed to highlight the reasons why a replacement was not bought in for Carroll, especially now Rodgers has to rely solely on the influential but hardly prolific Luis Suarez and Fabio Borini.

Henry also stated that the club are still in the “process of reversing the errors of previous regimes” and could not afford to conduct any future extravagant purchases.

We will build and grow from within, buy prudently and cleverly and never again waste resources on inflated transfer fees and unrealistic wages.” (liverpoolfc.com)

There is also praise for the “three young, but significantly talented starters in Joe Allen, Nuri Sahin and Fabio Borini” in what he refuses to call an unsuccessful period of transfer activity. However, few could argue that these deals represent value for money, especially when compared to the business that Tottenham and even Arsenal have conducted during the window. It’s worth pointing out that Liverpool have been hampered by their continued absence from the Champions League, so what does the future hold for the members of the current ‘top 4’?

After enduring their long and humiliating stint without a trophy Arsenal look set to benefit from their shrewd transfer policy. They are one of the few sides in the league and indeed across Europe who repeatedly boasts an annual profit, meaning they will comfortably meet the requirements set by the new Financial Fair Play regulations.

Financial Fair Play will come through because big clubs who have been spending a lot are worrying now,‘ said Wenger. ‘They ignored it until now, but finally we see that they are getting concerned.” (Daily Mail)

However their future security measures are of little consolation when the club adopts a worrying trend of selling their best players to their former rivals. In fact, they mirrored the actions of Liverpool on deadline day when Arsene Wenger failed to bring in a replacement for Alex Song despite publicly stating he would do so.

It’s a completely different story in Manchester with United shackled by their vast debt and City supporting a truly staggering wage budget. Ferguson was still able to flex his financial muscle with the purchase of Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa but was forced to return with his tail between his legs when PSG brushed them aside to sign Lucas Moura. Mancini on the other hand spent most of the window throwing his diamond-encrusted toys out of his pram before finally getting his way with the £16m purchase of Javi Garcia.

Chelsea have seemingly ignored the impending restraints on their bank account by dropping £80m over the summer to secure the likes of Eden Hazard and Oscar. However, every single new arrival has their best years ahead of them and may see Roman Abramovich take a back seat in future transfer windows, especially if Roberto Di Matteo can keep them sitting pretty at the top of the table.

John Henry alluded to a very critical point when he declared, “spending is not merely about buying talent”. There are plenty of avenues besides player acquisitions that come under the umbrella of financial investment and are excluded from the Financial Fair Play requirements. These may not bring about short-term success but will help ensure a sustainable future and few can argue that this has to be the priority.

Just like week Michel Platini was reaffirming his intentions to be ruthless to those who do not respect the rules of the FFP before declaring, “Uefa are there to protect [the clubs], not kill them.” And judging by the recent fortunes of Portsmouth, Rangers and Malaga, the only thing they need protecting from is themselves. Liverpool and Arsenal may be the first clubs to frustrate their fans during the transfer window, but don’t expect them to be the last.

Spurs held at home to Lazio

Tottenham have drawn their opening Europa League fixture with Lazio 0-0.

The north London side had three efforts from Jermain Defoe, Clint Dempsey and Steven Caulker all ruled out, and in the end had to settle for a point against the Serie A outfit.

Andre Villas-Boas has stated that he has no qualms over his side’s display and feels that they did enough to win the game.

“I think we had enough football to get the win,” he told Sky Sports.

“I am extremely happy with the performance and effort the players put in and in the end you can’t reprimand them for nothing, they were outstanding today and they had enough opportunities to win the game.

“A team that puts the ball in the net three times, and see two goals that were clear is disappointing but it shows we are on the right track, but the team has been doing extremely well.”

It is believed that travelling fans may well have been guilty of racism chants and monkey noises, with Defoe, Aaron Lennon and Andros Townsend targeted; AVB feels that Uefa will be reviewing the incidents.

“I think (UEFA will act if the accusations are proven),” Villas-Boas continued.

“UEFA is very active on this kind of situation so and our overall objective is to kick racism out of football.

“I can’t point the finger at anyone in any way shape or form tonight because I didn’t hear anything. It’s for the authorities to follow up in any kind of investigation,” he concluded.

An astute signing for Man United & Fergie plots January bid for Norwegian – Best of MUFC

Well, if we saw the Hyde side of United against AVB’s men the week before then the Jekyll side of United was certainly present in the North East last Sunday. Given the diabolical display at Old Trafford there was only one way to respond in order to avoid another dose of Sir Alex Ferguson’s hairdryer treatment. And respond they did as they produced a faultlessly dominant display at St James’ Park, coming away 3-0 winners and avenge the defeat by the same scoreline in January. Amongst the sea of positives regarding the performance Ferguson’s deployment of Wayne Rooney at the point of his midfield diamond was arguably the biggest. There has been talk of Rooney shifting to the middle later in his career but his all action, box-to-box display was a delight to watch and engaged every one of his strongest attributes. Given the competition for places up front Ferguson may have found Rooney’s true calling and solved his midfield issue in one fouled swoop.

This week on FFC when will Ferguson make a definitive decision over his number one goalkeeper and which Cottagers defender is on the Red Devils boss’ radar?

“It’s what it’s all about, getting as many games as possible. I know the manager has got such a big squad now, especially in the midfield area, and there is a lot of competition for places. I have to be patient and wait for my chances but, hopefully, one will come around sooner rather than later. I think my general fitness is fine, it’s just match fitness – the sharpness, reaction times, things in your head and things like that. The positional sense, when you’re a little bit older, comes back to you fairly quickly.” Darren Fletcher is relishing returning to the Manchester United starting XI

Liverpool set to offer new deal

Liverpool are set to reward young Spanish playmaker Suso a new contract as reward for a string of impressive performances.

The 18-year-old has featured in the Reds last 3 matches, starting in the 5-3 win at Young Boys and the 5-2 win at Norwich, whilst appearing as a second half substitute during the 2-1 home defeat to Manchester United.

The fans have really enjoyed what they have seen so far, and it has come as no surprise that Real Madrid were interested in signing him before Liverpool stepped in in 2010.

“He’s in the last year of his contract, and it’s something we will look at,” Rodgers said in the Mirror. “We did have a couple of offers for Suso in the summer, but I always said I didn’t want him to go.

“I felt we had a very good young player so let’s keep him here and we will see where he is in a couple of years. We had offers for him to go abroad but he was keen to stay, he understood he was going to get a chance here.

“He is tactically very good, strong technically with the ball. He makes things happen. I love that type of player. Talent finds space. He is a real talent. He is in the reckoning and he is a good kid as well.

“I have noticed a big progression in him from the pre-season tour of America: I have seen a real difference in the last couple of months and he has got a good appetite for the game. He is on the same page in terms of the tactical idea for the team. If his fight matches his talent we will have a very good player.”

Fellow youngsters Raheem Sterling and Andre Wisdom are also set to be offered new deals. The Liverpool youngsters have been a bright spark in what has been a difficult start to the season for Rodgers, who has been forced to throw them in due to the lack of depth in his squad.

“It’s funny how things work out. Maybe it’s fate,” Rodgers said. “Maybe this is all part of the story. Sometimes things happen by design, others by necessity. Whichever way, the plan between the window closing and January was to see how many of the young, talented players are going to be able to come into our squad – and I’ve been very, very pleased by the impact they’ve made.

“They have played with no fear, but I always say young players will run through a barbed wire fence for you. You have seen that in games. It’s also a great demonstration that with talent and spirit and belief and hard work what you can achieve, not matter how young you are.”

Rodgers was delighted with the performances of the teenage trio during the 5-2 rout of Norwich at the weekend, and admits their work rate and appetite for the game makes it easy for him to pick them over more established players such as Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson.

“Yes, it makes my job easy. In fact, my job couldn’t be easier because if you are fighting and someone else isn’t, there isn’t even a… it is so easy,” he added. “Lots of others in the team are putting their bodies on the line and the ones that don’t stand out like a sore thumb.

“There is no problem and for me status does not matter. It is what you are like as a player. It doesn’t matter how much money you have come for, that doesn’t matter to me. I will play a 17-year-old if he fights and he has quality.”

Suso signs new deal at Liverpool FC

Young Liverpool winger Suso has agreed a new long term deal at Anfield and he claims that it is ‘the best day of his life’, as reported on liverpoolfc.com

Suso has been part of Brendan Rodgers’ redevelopment of the Liverpool squad that has seen youngsters given a chance in the first team and more often than not they have taken it. Although not stating how long the new deal runs for, the youngster is clearly excited by his future on Merseyside.

“I am really happy. Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in the world and this is the right place for me.

“I am happy Brendan has shown trust in me. I had no questions about signing a new deal and I am really glad to have done so.

“I am comfortable here. I have played some games for the first team and I hope to continue doing that, but I need to work hard every day for that to happen.

“This is one of the best days of my life.”

Charlton respond with crucial victory to silence boo-boys

Under pressure and out of form Charlton headed in to Tuesday’s clash with table topping Cardiff needing points from somewhere, something that seemed impossible following the trouncing they suffered at the hands of Middlesbrough three days previous.

Sitting 21st in the table has made alarm bells ring for some Charlton fans that seem to at any opportunity jump on the team and more importantly Chris Powell’s back.

That seemed like it was going to be the case again after just 25 minutes against Cardiff where they found themselves 2-0 down courtesy of a Helguson header and a Mason tap in. However in this incredible game Charlton didn’t just flake away like most people would have expected with their current form but found themselves back on level terms at the break following a Johnnie Jackson brace.

With the amazing support well and truly behind the Addicks now they made an assault at the Cardiff goal on numerous occasions and completed their comeback on 54 minutes when a forty yard free kick eluded David Marshall and sent the covered end in to absolute delirium.

The goal scoring did not end there though and with Charlton’s tails well and truly up now, Haynes quickly added a fourth which resulted in numerous amounts of Cardiff fans actually head for the exit with the home fans taunts of “Cheerio cheerio”. The home support carried on in full voice and there chants of “ we want five” was duly met with a thumping header from Rob Hulse on 65 minutes.

A shell-shocked Cardiff did start to react by now and had carved a few openings for themselves keeping this a very entertaining game and one which was about to swing the pendulum the other way as the fourth official rose the board to reveal 6 minutes added time, no idea where this came from but Cardiff made the most of it and almost completed the most unlikeliest of comebacks. Firstly Noone cooly took it round Hamer and slotted home to a sarcastic cheer from all corners of the ground but this lifted the Cardiff team and there was time for Gunnarsson to add a Fourth by now Charlton fans could not watch and Cardiff actually almost nicked an amazing equalizer at the death only for Noone to fire just over to the relief of the Charlton fans.

A great night of football at the Valley and one that will live on for a long time, it’s also taken that little bit of pressure of Powell’s shoulders now they have masterminded a great comeback against the league leaders at the time. Next up for Charlton is a trip to Ashton gate to face the struggling Bristol City already being dubbed as a potential “6 pointer”. Charlton will need to be at their best they will know but a win could actually see them rise as far as joint 14th which just goes to show how even this league is.

The one thing that really lifted Charlton on Tuesday night was the amazing support even at 2-0 down the crowd did not stop singing including a solid first fifteen minutes of “Chrissy Powell’s red and white army”. I’m sure it inspired this amazing night and it really proved that some games the crowd really is the 12th man so come on Charlton fans every game let’s get behind the boys from now on and leave the stick for at home.

Aston Villa ace holds no City grudges

Aston Villa midfielder Stephen Ireland has revealed he holds no grudges against they way he was forced out of Manchester City.

Ireland came through the youth ranks at City and was being tipped as the Premier League’s next best thing, but was soon shown the door when current manager Robert Mancini replaced Mark Hughes.

And the 26-year-old insists there is no animosity between him an Mancini and agrees that it was the right time for him to leave the Etihad.

He told the Daily Mirror: “If I have stayed there I would not have been involved anyway. They have so much quality there was no way I was getting in the team.

“I live in the same area as him [Robert Mancini]. I bump into him occasionally and we have a chat.

“It is completely fine. I understand it was a football decision. It was the right time for me to leave.”

And Ireland, ahead of Villa’s visit to City this weekend,  believes the club’s youth system will be key to the club improving in the Premier League and competing in the top-half of the table again.

“It is paying off having good youth teams. Marc Albrighton, Ciaran Clark and Barry Bannan have all come through the academy and they have all got long careers ahead in the game,” he added.

“We are being encouraged to play football, we are winning or losing in style. It is not good to lose, of course, but we are having a go.

West Ham make move for Ajax winger

West Ham are ready to make a move for out of favour Ajax winger Miralem Sulejmani who they missed out on in the summer.

The Serbia winger, 23, joined Ajax for £13.8million from Dutch club Heerenveen in 2008. Valencia and Bayer Leverkusen are also said to be interested in signing him.

After reaching a dead end at his current club, he now seems focussed on ensuring he gets a move away from the Amsterdam Arena in the next transfer window.

“I must now focus on games in the reserves. I have to get game time in order to be fully fit during the winter, when I will get a chance to leave.” The Daily Mail quoted Sulejmani.

If the Hammers were able to get their man, it would add quality depth to their squad which is currently going through a slight slump in form after an excellent start to the season.

West Ham sit 10th in the league table but have won only one of their last 6 games, albeit in a tough run of fixtures. Boss Sam Allardyce will be keen to strengthen his squad in January with new players, one of which he hopes is Sulejmani.

O’Brien hoping Hammers bounce back with win

Joey O’Brien has declared his West Ham team-mates are aiming get back on track in the Premier League when they visit West Brom this Sunday.

The defender played in the Hammers side that surrendered a half-time lead in their defeat to Liverpool, for whom West Ham old boys, Glen Johnson, Joe Cole scored before James Collins put through his own net.

The east London outfit now visit the Hawthorns, hoping to pile more misery on West Brom, who are on a run of three straight defeats.

“Our aim now is to get back on track against West Bromwich Albion”, O’Brien told Sky Sports News.

“We want to take the points but it is a hard place to go and they have a good home record.

“Hopefully we can get a result but, as you saw against Liverpool, the top teams can produce little bits of magic and you are suddenly behind.

“I thought we played some decent stuff and created some good chances particularly in the first half down the right with Matt Jarvis. We looked good and that is what is disappointing because Liverpool did not play us off the park.”

West Ham will be without influential midfielder Mohamed Diame, who suffered a hamstring injury in Sunday’s defeat. The Senegalese joined Andy Carroll, Ricardo Vaz Te and Yossi Benayoun in the treatment room.

Midfield duo Jack Collison and Alou Diarra are on course to return from a long-term knee problem and thigh strain respectively, but are unlikely to recover in time for the West Brom fixture.

West Bromwich Albion 2-1 Norwich City – Match Review

Norwich’s 11 unbeaten league run came to a shuddering halt after Romelu Lukaku’s late goal snatched victory for West Brom at the Hawthorns.

Chris Hughton’s men hadn’t tasted defeat in the Premier League since losing to Chelsea at the start of October and, despite taking the lead, were undone by a late fightback from the home side.

The Baggies, who’ve stuttered of late losing three of their last four games, secured a vital three points that keeps them in contention for a surprise top-four finish heading into Christmas.

Despite having to defend resolutely as the Canaries opted to patiently keep possession Steve Clarke’s side soon got into their groove went close through a Lukaku header in the second minute.

The on-loan Belgium striker was the last player to score for West Brom over five hours ago and wasted another decent chance when shooting straight at goalkeeper Mark Bunn.

And those missed chances came back to haunt the hosts in the 23rd minute when Robert Snodgrass curled a free kick from the right into the top corner despite Ben Foster’s best efforts to keep it out.

Going behind energised the home side somewhat and Gareth McAuley was denied by Bunn from a corner, while Goran Popov lashed wide before they finally forced an equaliser to end their goal drought.

Chris Brunt’s corner was met by Jonas Olsson and when his header came back off the bar Zoltan Gera was on hand to volley the rebound into the net to level the game two minutes before the break.

Norwich came back out fighting in the second half and Michael Turner went close with a header after meeting Snodgrass’ cross, while Peter Odemwingie drilled a low free kick wide at the other end.

With the contest finely poised Lukaku stepped up to win it for Albion, beating Javier Garrido to Popov’s cross and head past Bunn from eight yards.
