Donald and McDermott on England shortlist

England have moved a step closer to finding a new bowling coach by naming a five-man shortlist that includes two domestic coaches and three overseas candidates. England leave for the World Twenty20 at the end the end of April and need to find a replacement for Ottis Gibson, who left in January to coach the West Indies.Allan Donald is the likely frontrunner, having done the job in 2007, but Australian duo David Saker, the Victoria bowling coach, and former fast bowler Craig McDermott are also in the reckoning. According to the the shortlist is completed by Dougie Brown, assistant coach at Warwickshire and Stuart Barnes, currently at Gloucestershire.Saker does not have international pedigree but has been coaching at Victoria since retiring from first-class cricket six years ago and has helped them to consistent success. His elevation, over the other, England-based, low-profile candidates would be a blow to the ECB’s own coaching programme.Barnes has a level four qualification and worked with the England performance programme during the winter which would make the England job an obvious progression. Yet he played just 11 first-class games and missed out on a job as Warwickshire’s bowling coach last year.Given the fiasco surroundings Peter Moores, the former England coach, and his lack of top-level experience, England may be reluctant to promote Barnes at this stage. Brown enjoyed a long career with Warwickshire and has had stint coaching Namibia but would be a surprise choice. The two most familiar names are Donald and McDermott. Having taken 291 Test wickets and 84 Ashes wickets, McDermott’s appointment would be intriguing. He has been coaching alongside Troy Cooley, who helped orchestrate Australia’s downfall in the 2005 Ashes before being enticed back to his native country, at Cricket Australia’s centre of excellence and has made no secret of his desire for the England job.”I just put my hat in the ring, I’ve had an interview and so forth and I will let the process run its course,” he told the . “Working at the Centre of Excellence has been a valuable experience for me and also working under and alongside Troy Cooley has been fantastic.”His knowledge of both the Australian set-up and conditions could prove crucial for England as they search for a formula to that can give them hope of defending the Ashes with the Kookaburra ball in Australia in November. The interview panel, made-up of Andy Flower, Hugh Morris, the ECB managing director and Kevin Shine, the ECB bowling coach, will decide next week so that the position is settled for when England depart for the World Twenty20 at the end of April.

Rangers: O’Rourke delivers big Olsen claim

A significant claim has been made regarding Rangers and their pursuit of a new forward this month…

What’s the talk?

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that the Gers are working on a deal to sign Andreas Skov Olsen this month and that they have been keeping tabs on his progress.

It remains to be seen how far along any prospective transfer is, but the reporter believes that the manager and sporting director are both keen to get this move over the line.

He told GIVMESPORT: “Skov Olsen, from Bologna, seems to be the one that Ross Wilson and van Bronckhorst have been pushing for. He is the one that they’ve been tracking for quite a long time.”

This comes after it was reported earlier this week that Belgian outfit Club Brugge are closing in on a deal for the attacker.

Excitement for Rangers fans

Rangers fans will surely be left excited by this claim from O’Rourke, as it appears to offer them fresh hope that Olsen will end up at Ibrox by the end of this month.

Despite the player reportedly being on his way to Brugge, the Gers remain keen on a deal and are pushing for it to happen, which shows that Wilson will not give up easily. Until the documents are signed and the announcement is made, Olsen is still available to sign before the end of the transfer window, and there is a collective desire from the top dogs in Glasgow to bring him to the club.

Supporters will be excited by this, as he could be a fantastic addition to the team and solve a problem area for Van Bronckhorst. No one player has been able to nail down the right wing position on a regular basis for the Gers, with Scott Wright lining up there in the draw with Aberdeen earlier this week.

He was hooked off in the 64th minute after creating one chance and losing six of his seven ground battles, whilst also failing with his one dribble attempt, as per SofaScore. The winger has two goals and zero assists in 13 Premiership matches, whilst Ianis Hagi – who can play centrally or out wide – also has two goals and zero assists in 15 league games.

Olsen has two assists in just six Serie A starts this season and has produced five goals and three assists in seven starts for Denmark in their 2022 World Cup qualifiers. This suggests that he could come in and provided an added goalscoring and creative threat on the right flank which Hagi and Wright have been unable to offer, which is why Rangers fans will surely be buzzing with the club’s concerted efforts to bring him to Ibrox.

AND in other news, Rangers can finally replace Gilmour by signing “phenomenal” 18y/o who “has everything”…

The India women’s team is geared up for their first tour of the Caribbean and hopes to get off the mark in the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 with victory over New Zealand on May 6.”Winning will give us the momentum. Twenty20 is all about maintaining it. Beating New Zealand will be a good way to begin,” said Jhulan Goswami, the India captain.India batsman and former captain Mithali Raj had a different opinion. “Twenty20 is about each player contributing to the team effort,” she said. “I am supposed to be the main player in batting, so teams will have special plans for me. If others can chip in at the right times, it will help.”India’s preparations for the tournament comprised of three matches against England at home and then a camp in Mumbai in sweltering conditions. “The heat was so much that we got fried,” said Raj. “It will help us in the West Indies.”We have been told that wickets in the West Indies are on the slower side. If that is true, then we have the spinners to make best use of conditions. If the tracks in the West Indies are slow, then India has the bowling unit.”India will go on to play Pakistan on May 8 and Sri Lanka on May 10, both in St Kitts.

Journalist makes Trossard to West Ham claim

Taking to Twitter, journalist Pete O’Rourke has broken a Sunday morning West Ham transfer development involving Brighton forward Leandro Trossard.

The Lowdown: West Ham attacker hunt…

Manager David Moyes is on the look-out for a new forward as the final hours of January loom, with the Hammers having until 11pm on Monday to finally bring an attacker through the door at Rush Green.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-news-copy/” title=”West Ham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They are apparently in talks for Reims ace Hugo Ekitike and have been very recently linked with a few others out of France, including Senegal international Bamba Dieng or Marseille.

However, breaking news this morning, O’Rourke says they’ve now made a ‘shock’ approach.

The Latest: West Ham make Trossard approach…

According to his sources, West Ham have ‘made a shock enquiry’ for Seagulls attacker Trossard as Moyes and recruitment chief Rob Newman seemingly cast their net of targets wider and wider.

“Understand West Ham have made a shock enquiry for Brighton attacker Leandro Trossard.” he explained on Twitter.

The Verdict: Right move?

The Belgium international, currently in the prime of his career, has only scored 14 goals over his 87 Premier League appearances at the Amex since signing from KRC Genk in 2019.

Numbers like these don’t exactly point to a prolific option in the forward positions and we believe other targets, like the much younger Ekitike, should be made a priority over the 27-year-old.

Valued at around £15.3m by Transfermarkt, it is very debatable whether West Ham should be matching a figure in and around that amount for Trossard.

Newcastle could return for Jesse Lingard

Newcastle United could make another attempt to sign Jesse Lingard when he becomes a free agent this summer, according to Sky Sports News’ Pete Graves.

The lowdown

Newcastle tried to sign the 29-year-old on January’s transfer deadline day, only for Manchester United to block the move. The Magpies had offered to stump up a loan fee, cover the entirety of the player’s £75,000-per-week wages and pay a survival bonus, but to no avail.

Man United appear to have missed their last opportunity to cash in on Lingard, whose contract expires in June, after he had been one of countless reported targets for PIF and Newcastle last month.

The latest

Graves took to Twitter on Monday evening to announce that any hopes Newcastle had of signing Lingard before the 11pm deadline were extinguished, but he added that there is a possibility of the Magpies revisiting their interest during next summer’s transfer window.

The journalist tweeted: “Jesse Lingard to #nufc is OFF. #mufc told him he won’t be allowed to leave. Understand he’s extremely disappointed. Newcastle had offered loan fee, full wages and a survival bonus. He will leave for a free in the summer. Expect Newcastle, West Ham and Spurs to all be in for him.”

The verdict

Keeping Lingard at Old Trafford feels like a tremendous waste of talent. The 29-year-old is clearly well down the pecking order, having only played 88 minutes of Premier League football this season, and Man United are seemingly going to lose their £18m-rated asset for nothing in the summer.

They really ought to have sold him last year off the back of his dazzling loan spell at West Ham, where he scored nine goals and provided five assists in 16 games.

Newcastle may be frustrated to have missed out this time, but they could ultimately be the beneficiaries of the Red Devils’ questionable decision-making if they can land Lingard on a free transfer in a few months’ time.

Graeme Smith has launched a scathing attack on former South Africa captain and selector Kepler Wessels on Twitter and hit back at the criticism his side have received after being dumped out of the World Twenty20 in the Super Eights stage.”Find it amazing that kepler can sit and say should have picked a younger squad when he was 1 of the selectors who chose it!unbelievable!” Smith wrote on Twitter and followed it up with “Atleast we own up to playing poorly.but all these so called experts/ex players im not sure I see a winners medal hanging round there necks!”South Africa lost heavily to England and Pakistan to finish bottom of the table in their Super Eights group and have won just a single global event – the ICC Knockout in Dhaka 12 years ago – since their reintroduction to world cricket in 1992.Their recent failure prompted a clutch of former players to voice their concerns, with Graeme Pollock saying “The two run-chases, against England and Pakistan, were two of the most amateurish I’ve ever seen,” and former selector Hugh Page saying: “In every other side, there’s a young player – sometimes two – who will go after the bowling early in the innings, I’d like to more young players to be given an opportunity.”Though nobody has as yet called for his head, Smith has been in charge for seven years and is under pressure to turn things around soon. South Africa play West Indies in three Tests, four ODIs and two Twenty20s beginning May 19.
