Sreesanth warned by Kerala association

The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) has sought an explanation from fast bowler Sreesanth, who represents the state, after he had reportedly criticised it

Cricinfo staff25-Jul-2010The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) has sought an explanation from fast bowler Sreesanth, who represents the state, after he had reportedly criticised it. Sreesanth has been warned of disciplinary action in the event of a repetition.”If Sreesanth repeats such things in future, the body has authorised the office bearers to take an appropriate action immediately,” KCA secretary TC Mathew told reporters. The uncertainty over Sreesanth’s availability had prompted the KCA to replace him as captain of the state side for the Ranji Trophy, though he was named in the 25-man list of probables for the Indian domestic season. Sreesanth had then suggested that he was considering playing for a different state side, but confirmed this month that he would stick with Kerala.

Elanga must become first choice at MUFC

Manchester United picked up another three points in their challenge to secure a top-four place in the Premier League this season, and are now four points ahead of their competitors in fourth, after going unbeaten in their last five league games.

Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes, Fred and Anthony Elanga all found the back of the net during the fiery clash with Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon, with two of the goal-scorers, Fred and Elanga, substituted on to save Manchester United from dropping points when the game was 2-2 in the 67th minute, making a huge impact to steal the three points for their side away from home.

The double substitution really paid off for Ralf Rangnick, and only further proved that 19 year old, Elanga, has a huge part to play in the future successes of the side, with his impact this season the youngster has given the German coach a new attacking threat that he can rely on.

The Swedish national joined Manchester United’s youth academy when he had just turned 14 years old in July 2015, and has since risen through the ranks with impressive performances and consistency in both the U18’s and U23’s, scoring a combined 25 goals and bagging 15 assists for the youth teams in just 66 appearances, which clearly caught the eye of the first-team coaches.

Elanga was given his Premier League debut by former Red Devils manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, in May last year in the defeat against Leicester City, and this season has been given more chances to prove his worth, with a change of management only furthering his progression in the team if his performances are anything to go by under Rangnick.

All of his nine appearances in the Premier League this season have been under the interim Manchester United boss, with the youngster scoring two goals for the first team in just 371 minutes of game time, and Rangnick will be over the moon to see Elanga capitalising on his opportunities given, especially after he scored against Leeds at the weekend.

The £3.6m-rated star has been hailed a “nightmare” by Gary Neville who also likened the diverse forward to Thierry Henry after saying his finish against Salford City back in 2020 was “Thierry Henry-esque” and clearly he is now being favoured for selection over another youth academy star.

Marcus Rashford was also on the bench for the Leeds United game, but Rangnick leaned on his 19-year-old competitor to get the job done in the game on Sunday afternoon instead.

That may set a precedent moving forward for Rashford’s future in the Manchester United team, and it will be interesting to see how Rangnick selects his attacking line in the remaining months of the season, with the side still in with the chance of competing for the Champions League and FA Cup trophies this season.

Champions League set for aggressive promotion

ESPNStar gets set for an aggressive campaign to showcase the breadth of global cricketing talent on offer during next month’s event in South Africa

With a couple of opinionated and charismatic cricketers on the commentary panel, and the biggest name in Bollywood as its brand ambassador, the Champions League Twenty20 is set for an aggressive campaign before and during next month’s tournament in South Africa to best showcase its breadth of global cricketing talent. The induction of Sourav Ganguly, Andrew Symonds and Amitabh Bachchan was based on the realisation that public perception of the tournament needed to change. Last year, the television ratings for the league suffered in comparison to that of the IPL, especially once the teams from India were eliminated. While Manu Sawhney, managing director of ESPN Star Sports (ESS), believed such a comparison is unfair – as the IPL is an “aberration” and most leagues take time to find their footing – he conceded changes needed to be made this time.”We went through a whole brand positioning research,” Sawhney said in Mumbai, following an ESS presentation of its newest stars. “We have an integrated campaign – across print, radio, TV, as well as the internet, to communicate the values and the essence of the tournament. The thinking is very focused and driven on the feedback.”The addition of Ganguly and Symonds is meant to add energy and freshness to the commentary team. “They add the dimension of great quality and incisiveness, and bring a current flavour to the tournament,” Sawhney, said.Bachchan is on board because he represents excellence and “is a source of inspiration.” He has already shot a number of promotional videos alongside Ganguly, Symonds and Herschelle Gibbs. The main thrust of the campaign is to get across the message that “this is something. This is the true competition. You just cannot afford to miss it.”Sawhney disagreed with the common perception that the Indian cricket fan only wanted to watch Indian cricket. According to him, the Indian fan is a “discerning” one who is prepared to watch a quality tournament. “It [the Champions League] doesn’t have all the Indian teams in it but they [the fans] do recognise there are many more talented teams here and the competition is the next level.”As a result of this focused marketing effort, Sawhney expected ratings to be significantly better than last year. The long term goal is for the the tournament to resemble the UEFA Champions League, which the best football clubs in Europe aspire to win.Ganguly said playing the tournament in South Africa would give some of the younger players in the teams from India an opportunity to to test themselves under difficult conditions against the best Twenty20 teams in the world.”Facing Shaun Tait would be a good experience,’ Ganguly said. “If someone like Shikhar Dhawan could get 50 or 60 against that sort of pace, it will make him a better player when he comes back.”Ganguly reckoned the bouncy pitches in South Africa will eliminate the 200-plus scores teams routinely put up in the IPL. “130 or 140 could be winning totals,” he said. He named Victoria and Royal Challengers Bangalore, with its coterie of South Africa players, as two of the stronger sides in the competition. He also thought Guyana could spring a surprise or two.”Guyana has nothing to prove and should go some distance in the tournament,” he said. “Teams won’t run through them.”

Man United make Carlo Ancelotti approach

Manchester United have reportedly made an approach over bringing Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti to Old Trafford.

The Lowdown: Ten Hag and Pochettino talks

The Red Devils are making a head start in regards to their pursuit of bringing in Ralf Rangnick’s long-term replacement ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

Both Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino have been in talks with United officials in recent weeks, with Julen Lopetegui and Luis Enrique also thought to be on the club’s shortlist.

Ancelotti, who shares the same agent as Raphael Varane, now appears to be the latest manager on that list.

The Latest: Approach made for Ancelotti

Sport Witness relayed a report from UOL regarding Ancelotti and United on Tuesday.

They claimed that an approach has been made, with the Red Devils considering the arrival of the Italian in the last few days.

However, the report added that a potential swoop won’t be straightforward, with Ancelotti happy at the Bernabeu.

The Verdict: Surprise…

It did look as if Ten Hag and Pochettino were the frontrunners for the job after their talks with United CEO Richard Arnold, with Lopetegui and Enrique outside contenders, so this update on Ancelotti does come as a shock.

A third managerial job in England after spells with Chelsea and Everton could be unlikely for the 62-year-old, especially as he is thought to be very content in Madrid.

United may not be able to offer Champions League football next season either, which could make it even harder to attract Ancelotti, who currently has that with Real Madrid, whom he is also set to guide to La Liga glory in the coming weeks.

Rudolph keeps Yorkshire on top

Jacques Rudolph continued his phenomenal Clydesdale Bank 40 form as Yorkshire Carnegie extended their lead at the top of Group B with a five-run win over Middlesex Panthers at Scarborough

22-Aug-2010
ScorecardSouth African Jacques Rudolph continued his phenomenal Clydesdale Bank 40 form as Yorkshire Carnegie extended their lead at the top of Group B with a five-run win over Middlesex Panthers in front of a packed 6,500-strong crowd at Scarborough. The prolific left-handed opener went into the game as the competition’s leading scorer with 518 runs at an average of 85.50 and he completed his third century of the season with an unbeaten 124 off 108 balls. His highly-polished innings guided Yorkshire to 250 for 6 and put them on track for their ninth win in 10 games with just two group matches still to play, with Middlesex making a valiant attempt but finishing on 245 for 8.Yorkshire all-rounder Richard Pyrah was presented with his first-team cap by captain Andrew Gale shortly before the match began, but Ajmal Shahzad had to pull out because of a recurrence of the ankle injury which kept him out of the England squad. Tim Bresnan, who has been included in the England squad for the final Test against Pakistan, took his place in the side.Winning the toss, Yorkshire were given a good start by Gale, who made 36 out of 50 inside eight overs before Toby Roland-Jones claimed the first of his three wickets when the captain skied him to Tom Scollay on the square leg boundary. Adam Lyth did not last long on his home ground but Anthony McGrath then joined Rudolph – dropped by wicketkeeper John Simpson when on 10 – in a third-wicket partnership which contributed 138 in 23 overs. The stand was ended by Tim Murtagh, who also grabbed three wickets, McGrath falling to a catch on the rope by Dawid Malan after striking 68 off 75 balls with six fours. Middlesex checked the scoring for a while with three wickets going down in as many overs in the third powerplay but Rudolph glided to his century from 98 balls with nine boundaries and remained firmly in control until the overs expired.Opener Scott Newman kept Middlesex in the hunt with a powerful 77 from 70 balls with five fours and three sixes, and he and John Simpson had put on 47 for the first wicket in nine overs when Simpson fell lbw to Adil Rashid’s first ball. Newman and Owais Shah then added 54 together before McGrath too picked up a wicket with his first ball by knocking back Shah’s stumps and when Malan was bowled attempting to reverse sweep Rashid, Middlesex were 135 for 3.Two runs later, Bresnan yorked Newman and Middlesex stumbled until Neil Dexter was joined by Roland-Jones in a last-gasp ninth-wicket stand which added 51 from 37 balls, Dexter reaching his half-century from 39 deliveries with six boundaries. McGrath was recalled to bowl the last over with 13 required and Middlesex were unable to manage the boundaries they required to cross the line.

Celtic: Postecoglou confirms injury doubt

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has confirmed a fresh doubt over David Turnbull ahead of the Hoops’ Scottish Cup semi-final clash this coming weekend.

The lowdown: Not so perfect

As the Bhoys completed a 7-0 annihilation of St Johnstone at Parkhead to temporarily move nine points clear at the top of the Premiership, all appeared to be positive for Postecgolou.

However, soon after the match, it emerged that Greek striker Giorgos Giakoumakis had suffered a hamstring injury before being replaced in the first half.

Now it appears that Celtic have a fresh concern regarding another key player…

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates-2/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The latest: Turnbull a doubt

Speaking to Celtic TV, as quoted by The Herald, Postecoglou admitted that there is also concern over Turnbull’s availability for the semi-final against Rangers on Sunday.

The 56-year-old stated: “Nothing concrete yet. Again, we’re still waiting on the final scans on it.

“Hopefully, it’s not too bad. He [Giakoumakis] feels like it’s not too bad. But until we get the information we won’t know.

“Similar with David Turnbull, he obviously got a pretty hard knock. It’s only a couple of days after so we’ll see how it all settles down.

“With both, I’m hoping it’s not too lengthy an absence.”

The verdict: Worth the risk?

So far this term, the 27-year-old Greek marksman has scored 13 times in 24 appearances, whilst Turnbull – who was hailed as a ‘class act’ by ex-Hoops boss Neil Lennon – has directly contributed to 17 goals in 37 outings across all competitions. Therefore, both are players who can make a discernible impact.

As Postecoglou prepares for what looks to be a crucial run-in on the quest for a domestic treble, it seems unlikely that the 56-year-old would take any unnecessary risk over two players of such importance.

Having won both Old Firm derbies since the turn of the year, the Hoops go into the semi-final encounter full of confidence, and with the returning Kyogo Furuhashi fit and available once again.

In the absence of Giakoumakis and Turnbull, the Japanese forward could be called upon to lead the line, whilst Tom Rogic, Callum McGregor and Reo Hatate are likely to make up the midfield trio.
