Ijaz Butt says no leniency for Amir

Pakistan cricket’s chief Ijaz Butt said that his board will not make any appeals for leniency for 18-year-old fast bowler Mohammed Amir in the spot-fixing controversy

Ijaz Butt met Sharad Pawar in New Delhi•AFP

Pakistan cricket’s chief Ijaz Butt has said his board will not make any appeals for leniency for 18-year-old fast bowler Mohammad Amir in the spot-fixing controversy. Butt was speaking in New Delhi after meeting with ICC chief Sharad Pawar on Thursday afternoon. He told the Indian news channel that Amir would be treated like the other two Pakistan cricketers suspended for their role in the spot-fixing controversy. “Different standards cannot be applied for different cricketers,” he said, adding that according to the PCB the players had to be thought of as “innocent unless proven guilty”. If they are found guilty Butt said, “the book will be thrown at them”.The cricket administrators emerged out of Pawar’s residence after the meeting which lasted close to 75 minutes. Butt said the “first and foremost reason” he was in Delhi was because he “owed him (Pawar) one because we had not met after he became the ICC president – I have a lot of respect for him and he is a dear friend”.The two had talked about the suspended players but Butt said he would not comment on the investigation until it was complete, though he did add it was “wrong of the police to search the players’ room without their permission”. Butt said the PCB had protested strongly when it was discovered that the Pakistan dressing room at Lord’s had been searched without the knowledge of either the English or the Pakistan boards. He said only the MCC, as the hosts, were informed about the search.Butt’s meeting with Pawar appears to be a move to gain support in the ICC to put forward a case for Indo-Pak cricket. Butt was quick to say he “didn’t see an India bias in the ICC suspension – but I am not a politician” and wanted ties between the two nations to “resume as soon as possible”.The resumption of ties, he believed, would be quickened if an India-Pakistan series was to be held at a neutral venue. “If we can play against Australia in England, why can’t we play India?”, Butt said, adding that the PCB had a few suggestions to offer to the Indians as his Board had discussed the possibility “for a long time”. A BCCI official, however, told ESPNcricinfo that a neutral series seemed “impossible” at this stage due to both the political climate between India and Pakistan as well as the spot-fixing controversy. In his television interview, Butt said Pakistan’s defeat in the Lord’s Test, by an innings and 225 runs, had proved that “there was no match-fixing in that game – the three no balls had nothing to do with the ultimate result”. He said that the media coverage had shifted during the week following the Lord’s Test. “First everyone said match-fixing. Then they switched to spot-fixing, spot-fixing”.The anger in Pakistan after the ICC’s first-ever suspension of players was not reinforced by the PCB chief who told the media, “we are not angry about the players being suspended … the ICC’s Code of Conduct is clear and the ICC has the authority to do what they did”. Butt said, “the PCB is a part of the ICC and we should work together for a solution”.As the ICC chief, Pawar was “duty bound” to meet Butt, his aides told ESPNcricinfo. “He has to be accessible to all member boards – particularly an ICC member in distress.”Pawar said the Scotland Yard investigation into the charges against four Pakistan players is likely to end soon. “Prima facie there are some allegations and we have suspended the players on the basis of that,” Pawar said. “Scotland Yard has permitted them to go back to Pakistan and the PCB has also promised to make them available to the investigators if required. Nobody is playing hide and seek.”A major investigation agency is carrying out the probe and that will not take long. Neither the PCB nor ICC will interfere in the process.”

Celtic: Hartson makes Kyogo claim

Celtic favourite John Hartson has backed Kyogo Furuhashi to return to the starting lineup for the Scottish Cup semi-final clash against Rangers at Hampden Park.

The lowdown: Left out at Ibrox

The 27-year-old forward has been a huge absentee for the Bhoys, having missed 30 games this season with knee and more recently hamstring issues.

However, the Japanese ace made a welcome return to the fold in the second half of the 7-0 demolition of St Johnstone at Celtic Park last weekend. Kyogo was actually fit for the Old Firm win at Ibrox two weeks ago, but was left out as the manager did not feel he was needed.

Now, as another Old Firm showdown looms large, the Japan international could be back in contention to be named amongst Ange Postecoglou’s starting XI from the outset.

The latest: Hartson calls for Kyogo

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show, as relayed by the Daily Record, Hartson is adamant that Kyogo should feature if Giorgos Giakoumakis is deemed unfit.

The former Wales and 50-goal Hoops frontman said: “The back four will stay the same and I think the midfield will remain the same.

“The only one for me will be O’Riley or Hatate. Then it’ll be Maeda, Jota, and if Giakoumakis isn’t fit, then I see Kyogo starting.

“Why wouldn’t he start him? I think he’ll be dying to get back on the scoresheet.

“He’s such an enthusiastic and quality player. What an impact he made before he got injured.”

The verdict: Spot on

Having finally made a successful comeback there appears to be little reason not to include the 12-cap ace from the start, particularly should Giakoumakis miss out.

After almost four months out it’s unlikely Kyogo will be able to complete 90 minutes but it’s impossible to ignore the Japanese star’s quality.

Prior to coming off injured on Boxing Day, the versatile attacker had scored 16 times and provided five assists in 27 appearances across all competitions this season and will be a welcome addition back into Postecoglou’s squad for the semi-final and beyond.

Abhinav Mukund ton drives Rest of India

On a Jaipur pitch that offered no help to the bowlers, the Rest of India batsmen made merry on the opening day of the Irani Cup tie against Mumbai

Abhinav Mukund struck his ninth first-class ton•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

On a Jaipur pitch that offered no help to the bowlers, the Rest of India batsmen made merry on the opening day of the Irani Cup tie against Mumbai. Abhinav Mukund dominated proceedings with an unbeaten 156 and was supported by half-centuries from opening partner Shikhar Dhawan and S Badrinath. Mumbai, the Ranji Trophy champions, toiled hard but there was also enough indiscipline on offer from their bowlers. Their fielders didn’t help matters by dropping the couple of chances that came their way.Yuvraj Singh called correctly in the morning and had no hesitation to bat on a pitch that seemed to have very little moisture; whatever little there was, evaporated soon under the harsh sun. There was hardly any movement, in the air or off the seam, for Mumbai’s new ball pair of Ajit Agarkar and Dhawal Kulkarni. It was evident in the ease with which Dhawan got going as early as the third over, driving Agarkar twice in three balls for four through the gap between extra cover and mid-off.Mumbai had a golden opportunity to get an early breakthrough in the next over bowled by Kulkarni, when Mukund edged a delivery outside off between second and third slip. Omkar Khanvilkar dived across from third slip, got both hands to the ball but failed to hold on. Mukund was on eight then. He capitalised on that lapse by driving Kulkarni to the extra cover fence in his next over.Dhawan and Mukund shut the door on Mumbai after that, defending the ones pitched on a good length and punishing deliveries bowled full or short. Mumbai missed a third seamer, someone like Aavishkar Salvi who could have hurried the batsmen, as Usman Malvi was steady at best. Spin was introduced in the 14th over in the form of Ramesh Powar, and though the veteran off-spinner flighted the ball tantalisingly, there was neither much turn nor bounce on offer to trouble the batsmen. Moreover, Powar was guilty of overstepping eight times.Jaffer juggled his bowlers around, using as many as eight during the course of the day. Abhishek Nayar got some deliveries to skid a bit off the pitch but he was far too erratic to cause any worries for the batsmen. If Powar could not get anything out of the surface, it was unlikely that Iqbal Abdulla could; he was smashed for three consecutive fours by Dhawan in his third over.Mumbai’s second and last chance came a couple of overs before lunch when Malvi, running in from long leg, failed to latch on to a top-edge from Dhawan at deep square leg off Agarkar, despite diving and getting both hands to it. Rest of India went into lunch at 128 without loss.Dhawan and Mukund unleashed a flurry of boundaries after lunch as Mumbai wilted under the hot Jaipur sun. However, Dhawan – who had looked the more fluent of the duo – tried to hit one too many and struck a Rohit Sharma full toss straight to Abdulla at midwicket to depart for 83.At 167 for 1, Mumbai ran into the broad bat of Badrinath, who hardly looked ruffled throughout his stay, and hit some pleasing drives, and the only six of the day off Powar. Mukund meanwhile reached his ninth first-class hundred with a straight-driven four past Malvi, after being stuck on 99 for 14 deliveries.Mukund’s timing only got better after tea and one shot off Kulkarni pretty much summed up the day. Mukund straight-drove a full delivery and the ball sped past the mid-on fielder before he could even react. It was that kind of day for the Ranji Trophy champions. It sped past them in a blur of runs.

Southampton: Barclay shocked by exit news

Journalist Tom Barclay has been left shocked by some exit news out of Southampton involving one player who has been a ‘key figure’ at points under Ralph Hasenhuttl.

The Lowdown: The Athletic claim emerges…

There are many current Saints players who could leave the south coast club by the end of 2021/2022, especially in the goalkeeping department, with as many as four shot stoppers out of contract in June.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/southampton-newest-updates/” title=”Southampton newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Alex McCarthy, Fraser Forster, Willy Caballero and Harry Lewis are all in danger of leaving on Bosmans as things stand – while the likes of Jack Stephens and Shane Long also see their deals expire before July 1 (Transfermarkt).

The Athletic, making a recent claim, say that yet more players could depart Hasenhuttl’s squad this summer – including Moussa Djenepo, Theo Walcott and Nathan Redmond as the Saints become open to offers for all three.

The trio are out of contract in 2023, prompting Saints chief Martin Semmens to try and make money off their sales whilst it is still possible, but Barclay insists Redmond’s inclusion is a ‘surprising’ one.

The Latest: Barclay shocked by Redmond exit news…

Speaking to GiveMeSport, The Sun reporter claims the 28-year-old’s potential exit is a shock due to him being ‘quite a key figure’ at points over 2021/2022.

He explained: “Redmond, he’s probably the most surprising one in a way because he was actually quite a key figure early in the season.

“He’s got a nice versatility to him, the fact that he can play in that wide left role, on the right as well, and can play off a front-man.

“And he was having quite a nice combination with Broja, particularly when Broja was really playing well. If anything, perhaps that combination was working best for Broja.”

The Verdict: Stick or twist?

The winger, valued at around £16.2 million by Transfermarkt, is also in the prime of his career and homegrown – putting Semmens and Southampton in a position to command reasonable price tags this summer.

Supporters will also remember Redmond being complimented personally by Man City boss Pep Guardiola, who advised the forward to attack his Sky Blues side more whilst raving over his qualities as a young English player at the time (BBC).

His versatility, having played in almost every attacking midfield position and further forward (Transfermarkt), will also be a major attraction to interested clubs.

Unless Southampton can agree an extension, with time running out before he’s a free agent at the end of next season, we believe now is the right time to cash in.
