Vusi Sibanda, the Zimbabwe opener, has not been selected for the upcoming tour to New Zealand because he chose to play grade cricket in Australia and declined a Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) contract. The omission of Sibanda is in keeping with ZC’s policies of regarding players who are not part of its domestic structure as ineligible for national selection.Zimbabwe play a one-off Test, three ODIs and two Twenty20 internationals in New Zealand, and named a 15-man squad led by Brendan Taylor.Sibanda did not accept an offer from his franchise, the Mid West Rhinos, where he was captain, at the start of the domestic season in September 2011, but continued to play for the national team. He did not play the Stanbic T20 competition in December and travelled to Sydney to play for Eastern Suburbs. At the time, Alistair Campbell, chairman of Zimbabwe’s cricket committee, told Sibanda that he would not be considered for the national team if he chose to go to Australia. Head coach Alan Butcher was asked if Sibanda would definitely be ruled out; he said, “Not as far as he or I are concerned,” leaving room for uncertainty over Sibanda’s future.Sibanda returned to Zimbabwe earlier than expected in an attempt to be considered for the New Zealand tour. Sources close to the player said his arrangement in Australia was no longer working out after he hoped to be contracted for the Big Bash League but was not.Sibanda was named in Zimbabwe’s 20-man training squad last week. The reported that he was not included in any of the team’s drills when they trained, while members of Zimbabwe’s selection and cricket committees debated whether they should include Sibanda in the final squad. Campbell said the selectors decided to stick with their original decision.”He knew when he decided to go that he would not be considered for selection for Zimbabwe,” Alistair Campbell, chairman of the cricket committee, told ESPNcricinfo. “When he returned, we debated it, and decided that we cannot set precedents for players to go and play in other country’s domestic competitions and not at home, and then be considered for the national team.”Taylor, however, is currently playing in New Zealand’s HRV Cup, where he represented Wellington in seven matches. He missed three first-class matches and two List A matches in Zimbabwe, but Campbell justified Taylor’s actions.”With Brendan Taylor, it was different. The board has always been in favour of players going to play in other country’s 20-over leagues to learn a bit about the conditions as long as it does not conflict with our cricket,” Campbell said. “We can’t have players substituting domestic cricket with club cricket in another country.” Taylor is still contracted to ZC. He will meet up with the squad once they reach New Zealand. The tour will be a litmus test for Taylor, who will lead Zimbabwe for the first time away from home since taking over the captaincy after the World Cup last year. It will also include the first away Test Zimbabwe will play in six years, after they made a return to the five-day format in August 2011.Sibanda was an integral part of Zimbabwe’s Test comeback. He scored 78 against Bangladesh in their first Test of the new era, which Zimbabwe won by 130 runs. He also contributed an important and 93 in the 34-run loss to New Zealand in Bulawayo two months later. As one of their most senior players in the Zimbabwe squad, Sibanda was also part of the leadership team.Despite the snub, Sibanda’s chances of representing Zimbabwe are not over. He is currently playing for the Rhinos on a pay-as-you-play basis and will renegotiate a contract at the start of the next season. “If he plays in Zimbabwe and shows his commitment to our cricket, he will be considered again,” Campbell said.

A 201-run partnership helped England Women to a 14th consecutive victory and a 3-0 series whitewash over New Zealand Women in Lincoln. Sarah Taylor’s unbeaten 109 was the mainstay of the stand as England chased 221 inside 43 overs to win by six wickets. It was Taylor’s fourth ODI century and came in with England at 15 for 2, having lost captain Charlotte Edwards and Tamsin Beaumont both lbw to Rachel Candy for single-figure scores. Taylor, who became the youngest female to 2,000 international runs in the second ODI, struck nine fours in her 113-ball innings. Her partnership with Lydia Greenway came in 36.3 overs and guided England to another easy victory.Greenway also faced 113 balls, making 84 with six fours before being stumped with her side within a stroke of the target. It was left to Taylor to score the winning runs and keep England’s unbeaten run going, which stretches back to July 2011.New Zealand had looked on course to set a competitive total but having been 202 for 5, their innings collapsed for 18 more runs. After a solid start, Laura Marsh struck to remove Katey Martin for 38, then picked up wickets in successive overs, removing Suzie Bates and Anna Peterson on her way to 3 for 28.Amy Satterthwaite tried to rebuild the innings with a 69-ball 58 but after she fell to Arran Brindle, Danni Wyatt’s 3 for 36 ran through the lower order and England were faced with only a modest chase.”It was a fantastic team performance today,” Sarah Taylor said. “The bowlers bowled well to restrict New Zealand and I was delighted to contribute and get a big score. I think that was one of my best innings.”Lydia batted really well. It was great to share a partnership with her on such a fantastic wicket. Once we got in we just looked accumulate and build the runs. We knew that if we just batted the runs would come.”

Azhar Mahmood waiting for Indian visa to play IPL

Azhar Mahmood, the former Pakistan allrounder who is now a British citizen, has not been able to play for Kings XI Punjab in the IPL because he has not yet been given an Indian visa. Mahmood had been bought by Kings XI for $200,000 at the 2012 player auction. The Kings XI management had said Mahmood had taken a short break after playing in the Bangladesh Premier League, but the captain Adam Gilchrist said there had been visa issues. “It’s up to the government. I believe that he has not yet got his visa,” Gilchrist told . “When we picked him at the auction, we were given to believe that he would be available for all the matches. But that has not happened. He is yet to get his visa. He is a class player and we are missing him.”Following the 2012 auction, Kings XI had appeared to be one of the weakest teams, and Mahmood was their highest-profile signing. They struggled in the early part of their campaign, losing two games, and are presently second last in the points table. Kings XI are also without Stuart Broad, who is missing the tournament because of injury.Mahmood is the only player to have represented Pakistan in this season of the IPL. While Pakistan players were part of the inaugural tournament in 2008, they have missed out since then, after cricketing ties between India and Pakistan broke down following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.IPL chairman and BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla said earlier this week that the participation of Pakistan cricketers in the tournament was dependent on the resumption of bilateral ties. “No one is against Pakistan or Pakistani players in India, or else we would not have allowed Pakistani commentators or umpires in IPL 5,” he said. “Everything is tied to the resumption of bilateral cricket ties between the two countries. Once that happens, I think everything will happen automatically. The IPL functions under the BCCI and when bilateral relations resume between the two boards, the IPL will also not be a problem for Pakistani players.”
