– Eu me sinto muito bem.

Rangers’ GvB makes dig at club board

Glasgow Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst may have been making “a dig” at the Light Blues’ board with his recent comments on the club’s finances, according to one former BBC pundit.

The Lowdown: Van Bronckhorst’s comments

On Wednesday, the Scottish giants made their return to the Champions League after a 12-year absence.

However, to the dismay of their supporters, the Premiership side suffered a 4-0 hammering against Ajax, having conceded three goals in the first half.

After the defeat, Van Bronckhorst made a number of financial claims surrounding his Gers squad, saying: “To compete in Champions League you need hundreds of millions.

“If you look at all the squads you are facing now – Ajax and Liverpool. For us to compete with them it’s too much to ask. We want to compete but we want to compete with the squad we have and are able and capable in making. We knew it was going to be tough and that showed today.”

The Latest: Whelan’s claim

Noel Whelan, who used to work as a pundit for BBC Radio Leeds, believes that the Dutchman was having a go at the board for not giving him the budget that he feels is needed to compete at the highest level.

Speaking with Football Insider, the ex-Aberdeen striker claimed: “It might be a bit of a dig at the board. But looking across the field – they’d need a whole new team to be able to compete against Ajax.

“Man for man, you’d choose the Ajax players over the Rangers players. That’s just where they’re at. Ajax have always been a top team with a fantastic record of bringing young players through.

“Van Bronckhorst has put his hands up and admitted Rangers were up against a better side – and they will be often in the Champions League. They’ll rarely be favourites in this competition – whether that’s at home, or away.”

The Verdict: Lack of investment

Whilst Rangers were able to bring in six new additions this summer, the club failed to replace a number of high-profile exits included within their eight departures.

In July, it was announced the Light Blues had sold defender Calvin Bassey for a club-record £23m fee (ironically to Ajax). His replacement was Ben Davies, who joined from Liverpool in a deal worth just £4m.

The 27-year-old has failed to establish himself as a starter in Van Bronckhorst’s XI so far, having played just 112 minutes of football for the Gers to date.

Elsewhere, the likes of Joe Aribo were allowed to leave Ibrox without a like-for-like replacement having been secured.

Therefore, the Gers manager may be justified in his comments seemingly made towards the club’s hierarchy, as it seems that he was somewhat hung out to dry after the summer transfer window.

Arsenal: Marquinhos just had his Saka moment

A much-changed Arsenal side kickstarted their Europa League campaign with a victory over FC Zurich in Switzerland on Thursday evening,

Mikel Arteta rotated his starting XI in a bid to keep them fresh for the weekend’s visit of Everton in the Premier League, though that game now looks set to be postponed following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, which was announced right before half-time.

The Gunners went into the break tied with the Swiss champions after Marquinhos’ first goal on his full debut for the side was cancelled out by Mirlind Kryeziu’s spot-kick as Eddie Nketiah fouled Ola Selnaes inside the penalty box.

He made amends soon after the break, however, heading in at the far post as the young Brazilian turned provider. Arsenal sit atop of Group A after PSV Eindhoven, who they play next week, drew with Bodo/Glimt.

It was quite the night for Marquinhos, who was making his first-ever competitive start for the north London giants, and it’s fair to say he announced himself on the European stage in a familiar fashion to his teammate, Bukayo Saka.

The England sensation was handed his first full home debut in this very competition, featuring against Qarabag back in December 2018, then in September, during the following season, he bagged his first-ever goal and also two assists in a 3-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt, also in the Europa League.

It seems as if the former Sao Paulo gem is following in his footsteps with an eye-catching display against Zurich, where he also created as many as four chances, which was more than fellow full debutant Fabio Vieira, though not as much as the five that Granit Xhaka managed from a deep-lying midfield role.

The 5 foot 9 dynamo also provided three accurate long balls from four attempts (75%), registered a successful dribble and even put in two interceptions to thwart the home side, as per SofaScore.

Marquinhos’ fine display saw him earn the ‘Star Man’ title from Simon Collings of the Evening Standard, who wrote: ‘Enjoyed a dream debut as he got on the scoresheet with a well-taken goal from a slick move. Looked sharp all game and setup Nketiah’s goal with a great cross.’

Meanwhile, journalist Josh Bunting was equally impressed by the wide man, claiming that he “showed real heart and desire with his movement” and that he was “aggressive and astute.”

So forget Vieira or Nketiah, it was Marquinhos’ night over in Switzerland as he announced himself to the Gunners faithful with an excellent goal and assist.

It’s no wonder Arsenal didn’t sign another winger in the transfer market.

Newcastle plotting Youri Tielemans swoop

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their interest in Youri Tielemans ahead of the January transfer window…

What’s the talk?

According to Jeunes Footeux, the Magpies are eyeing up a fresh swoop to sign the Belgian international after opting against a move in the summer.

The report claims that manager Eddie Howe wants to bring the talent to St. James’ Park and that the club are plotting a £17m offer to tempt Leicester City into cashing in on him.

He is out of contract at the end of the 2022/23 campaign and it is stated that the Foxes could be forced to sell in January to avoid losing him for nothing later in the year.

Joe Willock upgrade

Howe could now land an upgrade on current Magpies central midfielder Joe Willock by securing a deal to sign Tielemans in the January window.

The ex-Arsenal prospect joined the club from the Gunners on a permanent basis in the summer of 2021 and endured a difficult first full season on Tyneside. In the 2021/22 campaign, he averaged an unimpressive SofaScore rating of 6.71 – worse than 16 other players in the squad – in the Premier League as he played 29 matches under Steve Bruce and Howe.

He scored two goals and failed to provide a single assist for his teammates, whilst creating 0.6 chances per match, as the Englishman struggled to make a significant impact at the top end of the pitch.

Willock made 2.9 tackles and interceptions per game in the top-flight and lost 52% of his overall duels, which suggests that he was busy but not particularly dominant defensively.

Tielemans, meanwhile, caught the eye as an attack-minded midfielder. He averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.06 as he scored six goals and provided four assists from the middle of the park, whilst producing 1.2 key passes per outing.

Along with that, he also made 3.0 tackles and interceptions per game and won 51% of his battles. This suggests that he offers a similar level of defending, in terms of volume and quality, whilst providing far more in the attacking third of the pitch.

The Belgian magician, who talent scout Jacek Kulig previously dubbed an “outrageous” talent, has also had a strong start to the current season. He has averaged a score of 7.32 in the division so far, compared to Willock’s 6.82, and created four ‘big chances’ in six appearances, which illustrates the level of playmaking he can offer the side.

Therefore, he could be a huge upgrade on Willock as he has the quality to make the difference in attack and could chip in with goals and assists to win matches for Howe’s side in the second half of the campaign.

Palace: Vieira revive Ceballos interest

Real Madrid have reportedly named their price for midfielder Dani Ceballos, amid interest from Crystal Palace.

What’s the word?

According to Spanish outlet AS, the La Liga giants are set to demand just £10m for the 25-year-old, with the player having only a year remaining on his existing deal at the Bernabeu.

The Spaniard’s former side Real Betis – whom he left on a €17m (£14.5m) deal back in 2017 – are credited with an interest, although the report suggests that Manuel Pellegrini’s side are unwilling to stump up the fee required to recapture the player.

The report goes on to add that there is interest from clubs in Serie A and the Premier League, with previous links earlier this season suggesting that Palace are one of those sides believed to be eyeing a move.

Gallagher replacement

The £13.5m-rated man would seemingly be available at a relative bargain price, while he also offers previous top-flight experience in English football having spent two seasons on loan at Arsenal between 2019 and 2021.

Although the £128k-per-week playmaker came in for criticism during his time at the Emirates, notably from pundit Tim Sherwood, he offers genuine quality to Patrick Vieira’s side, having been dubbed a “very clever” player by Robin van Persie while in north London.

A route out of the Spanish capital is seemingly needed for the 11-cap international having made just two league starts this season, although even in his brief outings he has shown flickering of quality, notably recording an impressive 7.5 match rating in the 4-0 win over Espanyol at the end of April.

Palace appear in need of a new midfield addition with current loan star Conor Gallagher set to return to parent club Chelsea next season, the 22-year-old having chipped in with eight goals and three assists during his stellar stint at Selhurst Park thus far.

The young Englishman – who has been dubbed “like N’Golo Kante with goals” by talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino – has shown his quality as an all-action presence in the centre of the park, averaging 0.8 interceptions, 2.1 tackles and o.7 clearances per game in the top-flight this term.

In comparison, however, Ceballos has proven he can match or even better that dynamic quality, averaging 1.4 interceptions, 1.5 tackles and 0.6 clearances per 90 while with the Gunners during the 2020/21 campaign, as well as winning 51% of his total duels.

Although he failed to net a single league goal in 49 appearances during his previous stint in English football, he did register five assists in that time, showcasing he can make the difference in the final third if required.

There’s no doubting Gallagher’s absence next term will be a huge blow, although in Ceballos the club can secure an affordable and experienced addition with similar traits and attributes.

Liverpool told to swap Mane for Gnabry

Sky Sports pundit Kevin Campbell has backed Liverpool to complete a surprising swap deal involving Sadio Mane and Serge Gnabry this summer.

The Lowdown: Both players out of contract next year

The 30-year-old is approaching the final 12 months of his current contract at Anfield, and according to Sky Germany, Bayern Munich are interested in signing the Reds forward during the upcoming transfer window.

Gnabry’s deal with the German giants at the Allianz is also set to expire at the end of next season, and following reports that he is considering a Bundesliga exit amid interest from potential suitors around Europe, this has created the possibility of an exchange between clubs, if both players do indeed leave their current teams.

The Latest: Swap deal on the table?

When asked during an interview with Football Insider whether or not there could be any good value in a swap deal for the Merseyside outfit, Campbell said it would be a ‘great signing’.

“That could be worth pursuing.

“Gnabry is going to be a sought-after player this summer. I know there is a lot of clubs who like him.

“He is a player who will be hotly pursued because he is still relatively young. We are talking about a Germany international who can play on either side, score goals, is quick and direct.

“He would be a great signing for Liverpool. There will be a lot of competition for Gnabry though. I think Arsenal would like to speak to him if there is an opportunity.”

The Verdict: Would be a shock to lose Mane

There’s no doubt that Gnabry would be a great signing for any team considering how much of a threat he can pose in the final third, having already found the back of the net 17 times and registered ten assists across all competitions for Bayern so far this season, as per Transfermarkt.

However, despite not getting any younger, Mane would be a huge loss to Jurgen Klopp, as he has been part of the furniture in the Reds’ starting XI since joining in a £34m move from Southampton back in 2016.

During his time at Anfield, the Senegalese superstar has made a staggering 267 club appearances and has recorded 167 goal contributions, and even though the likes of Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota have now provided serious competition for places upfront, Mane still has a hugely integral role to play in leading the line for Liverpool for at least a few more years to come.

Newcastle to target attacking signings

A big Newcastle United claim has emerged on PIF’s plans for the upcoming summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

The Chronicle reporter Ciaran Kelly has stated that the Magpies will be making additions to their forward options ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

He tweeted: “#nufc will bring in more firepower this summer, but Callum Wilson will still have a huge role to play. Only missed three league games – two through suspension – in his final campaign with Eddie Howe at Bournemouth. Intense pre-season was key to that.”

He linked his article in The Chronicle and revealed in the piece that the club’s priority is to make signings in the attacking positions, whilst Howe will also be attempting to improve Wilson’s fitness.

Supporters will be excited

This claim will surely leave Newcastle supporters excited, as it suggests that the club will be making the signings to get fans off their seats at St James’ Park.

Attackers are the players who can get the stadium rocking with skills, goals and assists, and that is why they are often the most exciting additions during a transfer window. Supporters will be keen for PIF to find the new Allan Saint-Maximin or the new Wilson to get them standing up in anticipation whenever the team gets forward.

The fans will also be buzzing with this update because of Newcastle’s lack of consistency in the final third this season. No Magpies player has consistently delivered assists or goals throughout the course of the campaign, and this indicates that it is an area in dire need of investment.

In the Premier League this term, no Newcastle player has scored more than six goals or provided more than four assists for Howe’s side. Only two players with 15 or more starts have managed more than 0.9 key passes per match and Chris Wood – who is Wilson’s back-up – has two goals in 16 appearances for the club, struggling to make the desired impact in the final third since joining in January.

This illustrates how important it is to target attacking signings in the upcoming window, and that is why Magpies fans will be relieved to learn that PIF will be doing exactly that. They will now be excited to see who comes through the door to bolster Howe’s squad in the coming weeks and months and can look forward to seeing a new-look starting XI next season.

Drameh can save Leeds millions

Leeds United youngster Cody Drameh continues to earn high praise following a successful loan spell at Cardiff City.

The 20-year-old defender spent the second half of the 2021/22 campaign in the Championship, where he impressed greatly winning their ‘Player of the Season’ award.

Bluebirds boss Steve Morison wanted to keep him in Wales past the summer but that seems rather unlikely.

“I don’t think anyone else in the league would mind having him. He has been top drawer,” claimed the Cardiff manager, via Wales Online.

“He is a great kid and he deserved all the awards he’s got. He is a top example to any of our young players, if they want to know how to get to the top and be as good as him – take a leaf out of his book.”

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more-2″ title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer rumours and more!”]

Indeed, reports from the Yorkshire Evening Post suggest that Drameh will be involved in Jesse Marsch’s squad heading into next season, a decision which could well save the club, and chairman Andrea Radrizzani, millions of pounds.

Vice-captain Luke Ayling not only disgraced himself against Arsenal, getting sent off for a needless and reckless challenge; subsequently missing the remainder of the season with survival on the line, but he isn’t getting any younger either.

“What an idiot. The lack of professionalism from his teammates and what this could mean going forward,” lambasted Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher (via talkSPORT).

“It’s not just going down to ten men, it’s a disgusting tackle going in with two feet and reminds me of a tackle that Vinnie Jones did a long time ago. What he thinks is going to happen on the back of that, I don’t know. It was an obvious red card.

“To put your team down to ten men, miss the last three games of the season, that might be the last game that Luke Ayling ever plays in the Premier League.”

The 30-year-old defender could well be replaced by Drameh in the near future.

Only Aden Flint registered a better WhoScored rating across the course of the season for the Bluebirds. The youngster’s three assists were only beaten by two other players but you’d imagine that would’ve been a different story had he been there for the entire campaign.

Meanwhile, Drameh also averaged a whopping 3.8 tackles per game, a feat which far usurps anyone in Leeds’ current squad, including Ayling (2.8 tackles, two assists).

Also described as “phenomenal” by Morison, the Thorp Arch gem’s emergence will surely mean that the Whites won’t have to spend big in the transfer market in the right-back role.

Marsch must take a look at Drameh heading into next season, that’s for sure.

Mills predicts numerous Leeds signings

Former Leeds United defender Danny Mills believes the Whites will make numerous new signings this summer, following a quiet January window.

The Lowdown: Big summer at Leeds

The Whites managed to avoid relegation from the Premier League by the skin of their teeth, beating Brentford away on the final day of the season.

It was a huge moment for the club, not only in terms of their top-flight survival but also in a financial sense and the ability to make signings moving forward.

It is going to be a key summer at Elland Road, as Jesse Marsch looks to thrive in his first transfer window as manager and surely wants to bring in players to reflect his system and vision.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-44/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Mills predicts plenty of signings

Speaking to Football Insider, Sky Sports News pundit Mills claimed that a busy summer lies ahead for Leeds, following comments he heard from Whites legend Eddie Gray:

“I was listening to Eddie Gray on talkSPORT. He’s obviously very close to the club. He was effectively saying that Leeds United wanted to make signings in January, but Bielsa said no.

“He obviously felt his coaching was enough to see them through. However, we saw that towards the end of his time – that just wasn’t the case.

“I think we’ll see a lot of those signings this summer that were in the pipeline then.”

The Verdict: Have to get it right

The hope is that this proves to be true and that Leeds are able to splash the cash this summer, in order to pull away from those threatened by relegation.

It is a vital summer, in that respect, with Marsch having to nail his transfer business and make the Whites an established Premier League club rather than one scrapping at the bottom, as looked to be the case after 2020/21.

Shrewd signings are required in various areas of the pitch, especially if influential heroes such as Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha end up moving on.
