£7m down the drain: Steve Parish must sell Crystal Palace outcast Connor Wickham

The domestic transfer window will reopen in just under two months’ time, and it seems as though there’s business to be done at Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace seem to be set for a big clear out with thirteen first-team players entering the last six months of their current contracts.

Whilst most of the focus will be on Roy Hodgson’s first-choice goalkeeper Vicente Guaita’s future, there is one potential exit that could go unnoticed.

Indeed, Connor Wickham could be about to leave the club, as a lack of action could see him heading for the exit. The 27-year-old was given a new deal for the season but could be move on to pastures new if recent reports are to be believed.

We can’t quite understand why Palace chairman Steve Parish would sanction such an extension in the first place. The former England U21 international, once described as being “impatient” when returning from injury by Hodgson, spent the second half of last season on loan with Sheffield Wednesday, where he scored two goals in 13 games in the Championship.

However, he has only scored eleven times so far in all competitions for the Eagles, and finds himself surplus to requirements at Selhurst Park as a result.

Of course, Palace may have a hard time selling the outcast in the winter transfer window on account of his injury history, as selling a player is easier said than done. He’s injured at the moment as well, which will hardly help proceedings. However, if he is going to become a free agent in the summer then they may as well look for a fee, no matter how low a price.

Whilst we aren’t for one minute saying that Wickham, who cost £7m when he signed from Sunderland on a five-year-deal, is necessarily a bad player – he scored a goal and supplied one assist in six Premier League games last term –  it’s fair to say that unfortunately he just isn’t up to the standards that Palace urgently require right now.

The Eagles desperately need a prolific striker who is capable of finding the back of the net on regular occasions. Even double digits would be nice at this stage. Surely that isn’t too much to ask?

Getting Wickham, who currently earns wages worth £60,000-per-week, off of the wage bill would be a good step in the right direction. Who knows, it may even create space in the squad for a surprise move for Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard, with whom they were linked in the summer.

AND in other news, Crystal Palace must secure deal for Middlesbrough defender Djed Spence…

Everton: Fans flock to Calvert-Lewin tweet reflecting on England goal

Plenty of Everton fans have been flocking to a tweet from Dominic Calvert-Lewin reflecting on his goal for England against Wales.

The 23-year-old headed in from a cross by Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish after his first call-up to the senior Three Lions team by Gareth Southgate.

After sharing a highlight video of the goal on his Twitter profile, Calvert-Lewin captioned it as “the most incredible feeling” as he scored on his senior international debut.

The striker will now look to add to that goal if he is given the chance by Southgate in England’s UEFA Nations League games at home to Belgium and Denmark respectively, as he looks to maintain his excellent form in time for the Merseyside derby against Liverpool at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Nonetheless, it is a moment that Calvert-Lewin will remember forever and he will no doubt hope that there are many more goals to come both at international level and for the Toffees.

These Everton supporters flocked to the tweet from the 23-year-old to show their support, with one fan branding him as ‘class’:

Manchester United: Fans react as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer grows frustrated at transfers

Manchester United have only made one transfer so far this transfer window, and it was a very good one as highly rated Dutch midfielder Donny van de Beek joined the club from Ajax.

However there seems to be a growing frustration from a lot of supporters of the club that there have not been more signings, especially when it seems like the news on their pursuit on the possible signing of Jadon Sancho varies from positive to negative on a daily basis.

According to Rob Dawson, who works at ESPN, and tweeted out by utdreport, Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seems to now be in the same boat as supporters of the club. He has been largely accepting of the financial implications that recent events have caused but now he is starting to become annoyed and impatient that deals he thought would happen have not materialised.

With their Premier League season getting underway as they play Crystal Palace at the weekend, all associated with the club will not want any rifts because it could affect the campaign, and hopefully Ed Woodward starts to bring in some more signings to please the manager and the fan base shortly.

Arsenal: Mikel Arteta provides positive injury update on Kieran Tierney

Arsenal boosted their prospects of a European finish after yesterday’s 2-0 victory against Southampton moved them to within six points of Manchester United in fifth.

Kieran Tierney put in a great performance in during the match, receiving a 7.2 rating from SofaScore, which was the second best of any outfield player for the Gunners.

However, he did limp off late on in the game, leaving supporters to worry if he had suffered another injury.

The Scottish international was able to walk off the pitch but it would be understandable if Arsenal fans were worried as he has an abortive, injury-plagued first season for the Gunners.

However, Mikel Arteta provided some positive news as he has outlined that there is no worry for the player, telling the club’s official website: “Kieran was cramping. He hasn’t played two games together in the last seven or eight months and he was suffering. The weather is different to Scotland and he needs to adapt to it.”

This is good news for Arsenal as Tierney looked to be part of a new formation to keep the Gunners stronger in defence, and it worked. He started off as a left-back before shifting into the middle when Arteta switched to a back five from his initial four-man defence.

It is also good to have him fit so that Arsenal can have adequate squad depth, with Sead Kolasinac a good alternative to come off of the bench if needed.

Gunners fans will likely be relieved to hear that the Scotsman’s injury is not a major one, especially given his problems in that regard in recent months, ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup clash at Sheffield United.

Harvey Elliott – Profile

Name: Harvey Elliott

Club: Liverpool

Date of Birth: 4 April 2003

Position: Winger (Right/ left)

Harvey Elliott – His career so far

Harvey Elliott is one of the Liverpool prodigies that are still fairly fresh at the club, having only arrived in the summer of 2019 and still working hard to prove his worth to Jurgen Klopp and his troops at Anfield.

But that still doesn’t take anything away from the fact he is among the highest-rated rising stars within their academy as he’s currently plying his trade for their U23 squad. His professional career, however, started with Fulham and he enjoyed success with them before moving over to the Merseyside last year.

Elliott spent some time clawing through the Cottagers’ ranks, featuring both for their U18 and U23 squads – tallying five goals and four assists in 19 games for the former and one assist across six games for the latter – before making his senior debut with the team.

And that was a huge milestone for the young lad since he was only 16 years and 30 days when he came on as a substitute against Wolverhampton Wanderers, breaking a Premier League record in the process as well.

He could only muster three appearances for the seniors, however, before Liverpool swooped in and scooped up the young talent, making him one of the Reds. Since then, he’s been a regular presence in their U18 and U23 squads and is still formally registered in the latter team despite already making his mark with the seniors.

Three goals and four assists with the U23 team do suggest he’s already acclimatising to his new surroundings and a total of seven senior appearances are further proof of that as well.

He made his senior Liverpool debut by starting the League Cup tie at MK Dons on September 25 and his Premier League bow arrived not long after that as he featured as a substitute against Sheffield United at Anfield on January 2.

Transfer latest

Probably the biggest Liverpool news that’s currently out there for Elliott is the fact that he is reportedly set to sign a new, long-term contract in the following summer that should tie him down with the club until at least 2023.

Of course, this does suggest he is at Anfield for the long run and the upper hierarchy believe that his talent could blossom into something truly beautiful in the future.

And even if there were some transfer rumours around him at the moment, considering that that would not really be such a shock since he’s only 17 after all, just the fact that Klopp has given him seven chances with the senior team does suggest no such thing will happen or it at least makes it less likely.

Transfer rumours are bound to come by eventually but if his appearances and sheer talent are any indications at all, he should be pretty safe at Anfield for the time being.

Player profile

In the day and age when wingers come in different shapes and sizes, Elliott looks set to become a more traditional wide man as opposed to following the new trends. We can say that because of his tendency to stay true to his wide positioning on the right side where he likes to hug the touchline and help his team stretch the opposition backline.

This is not to say that he is limited to only that particular role but he does excel at it, which makes it much easier to perform. But he is also a highly intelligent player who can become Liverpool’s creative playmaker from the wider areas.

Of course, this is further emphasised by his excellent dribbling abilities as he can boast with 2.67 dribbles per 90 minutes with an impressive 63% success rate. The main part, however, is in the fact that he can use his dribbles in the final third and in congested and tight areas to create space for himself and his teammates.

This makes him invaluable in both isolated scenarios and when his team faces a deep and compact block in front of them. The area in which we should expect him to improve the most, however, is the shooting and finishing.

While he is already a creative spark at Liverpool, we are yet to see him rattle the inside of the net for the seniors and he only averaged 1.28 shots per 90 minutes in 2019/20 with 46.2% of them hitting the target.

Liverpool fans want Naby Keita to start against Napoli

Liverpool will face Napoli in the Champions League on Wednesday as they look to qualify for the next round of the competition.

[ad_pod ]

It will be the Reds’ fifth game in the tournament this term, and as it stands, they top the group with nine points. A win against the Serie A side would confirm their place in the knockout stages, but that will be easier said than done. Whilst Napoli are currently struggling off the pitch, they are the only team to beat Jurgen Klopp and Co so far this campaign, winning 2-0 in September in the San Paolo Stadium.

With the games coming thick and fast – the Anfield outfit will play at least 10 more games this calendar year, and that number will be 11 if they make it to the Club World Cup final – the former Borussia Dortmund manager could make some changes to his side. One of those who could be brought into the fray is £45m-valued Naby Keita – as per Transfermarkt.

The Guinea international has played just eight matches in all competitions so far this term, but Klopp will need to utilise his whole squad if he wants success at the end of the campaign.

The club’s supporters are eager for him to be included in the starting XI against the Italian team. They took to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

Gabriel Jesus talks versatility and Man City legend Sergio Aguero

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus does not mind playing on the wing so he can make room for the club’s top gun Sergio Aguero.

What did he say?

Jesus has been a fantastic goalscoring addition to City since he signed for £27m, scoring 50 goals in 112 appearances already. This season, the Brazilian has often kept Aguero out of the side and has scored five times in the 12 games he has played.

However, Jesus told The National’s Richard Jolly that he is happy to play a sidekick role for the club record goalscorer.

He said: “It is difficult to describe Sergio.

“Sergio is the top scorer of the club and every game he shows us why he is the top scorer so, of course, I have to learn from him because he is a legend. Every game he scores.

“I want to score every game but I think it is different. I am 22 years old, I have to improve and practice my finishing.

“Since the Copa America, I play right winger. I like it. I started with the position in Brazil at my old club [Palmeiras] and after I got to play as a striker but of course I like to play both positions. I think it is very important you can play more than one.

“It was my first game as a winger with five at the back for Southampton so it is difficult when you dribble past one [defender] and have another one.”

Aguero still the top dog, for now

Jesus’ start to this season has once again been positive. Five goals in 12 outings is a good return for a man who is still just 22. However, Aguero is still surpassing the ex-Palmeiras man as the club’s main goalscoring threat, with the Argentine bagging 12 goals in 12 appearances so far.

However, at 31 years old, there will not be many more years left for the legendary striker at the Etihad. Plus, with his contract ending in 2021, and his desire to return to Argentina, there is maybe just two years of his service left.

For now, Jesus can learn from Aguero as he continues to dominate up top. Also, playing on the wing will only benefit his abilities and versatility like we have seen with stars such as Thierry Henry.

Soon, however, we are likely to see the Brazilian become the main man at the Etihad.

Man City fans baffled by Laporte’s omission from the Ballon d’Or shortlist

Manchester City fans cannot understand why Aymeric Laporte has been excluded from the 30-man Ballon d’Or shortlist.

The Frenchman has been a sensational signing for City since he joined in 2018 for £57m, helping the club win a domestic treble last campaign.

In that time, Laporte bagged himself three goals and provided three assists in 35 Premier League games, proving that he can be an asset at both ends of the pitch.

Fans cannot understand how his hand in a historic domestic treble has not earned him a spot ahead of the likes Marquinhos, who won the Ligue 1 title last season.

The former Athletic Bilbao man has gone from strength to strength and has already proved his importance through his absence this season, with City losing to Norwich City and Wolverhampton Wanderers during his time on the sidelines.

On the other hand, Kevin De Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero are part of 13 Premier League stars making the cut.

However, fans are struggling to get their head around the fact their French star missed out.
