Ireland book place in semis with big win

A second consecutive big innings from opener Clare Shillington helped Ireland Women comprehensively beat Canada Women by 77 runs in a Group B match of the Women’s World Twenty20 qualifiers in Dublin. The win guaranteed Ireland a place in the semi-finals, after the hosts had trounced Japan by 117 runs on Tuesday.Ireland, electing to bat, got off to a flying start as Shillington and Isobel Joyce added 71 runs for the opening wicket. Shillington, who was again adjudged the Player of the Match, struck 12 fours during her 61-ball 81, as she helped take Ireland to a competitive total of 146 for 7 in 20 overs.Canada got off to a sedate start in their run-chase, losing opener Monali Patel in the second over and scoring just 34 runs in the first ten. The visitors never really got going, and managed to hit just five boundaries in their innings, as tight and incisive bowling from Ireland bowled out Canada for just 69 in 19.2 overs. Offspinner Eimear Richardson was the pick of the bowlers for Ireland, finishing with figures of 3-1-10-2.In the other Group B game, Japan Women produced a dismal batting display as they were bowled out for just 21 and succumbed to a ten-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka Women.Put in to bat, Japan got off to a dire start, losing opener Mariko Yamomoto off the first ball of the innings. They managed only two boundaries throughout, both coming from Ayako Nakayama, who was also the team’s top-scorer with 12. None of the other batters got more than two runs, and Japan were bundled out in 18.1 overs. In reply, opener Yasoda Mendis struck four fours during her seven-ball 18, as Sri Lanka completed the chase in just 10 deliveries. Medium-pacer Eshani Kaushalya, who took 4-0-5-2, was named as the Player of the Match. In Group A, the Player of the Match Nattakan Chantam scored an 18-ball 24 to help Thailand Women to a six-wicket win over Netherlands Women in a low-scoring encounter at The Vineyard.Electing to bat, Netherlands could only manage 84 in their 20 overs, with Denise Hannema top scoring with 25. The Thailand bowlers were economical, with offspinner Rattana Sangsoma standing out with figures of 3-0-11-2. Thailand were slow and methodical in the run-chase, as openers Pundarika Prathanmitr and Naruemol Chaiwai put up a 31-run opening-stand, before Chantam’s knock completed the win.Half-centuries from captain Sana Mir and Bismah Maroof set up Pakistan women‘s 72-run win over Zimbabwe women to put them on top of the table for Group A.After electing to bat, Pakistan were rocked early as Javeria Khan and Iram Javed were dismissed without scoring in the second and fourth overs. But an unbeaten fifth wicket partnership of 107 runs, off only 79 balls, between Mir and Maroof took Pakistan to 142 in their 20 overs. In reply, only two of Zimbabwe’s batters managed to get into double figures. Qanita Jalil struck in successive overs, removing the openers before the score had passed six. Chipo Mugeri and captain Ashley Burdett held firm until the 13th over. But Javed removed Mugeri, who was the top-scorer with 32 off 33 balls, including six fours, which triggered a collapse, with five wickets falling for 16 runs. Nida Dar produced a miserly spell of 4-1-6-2 and Sana Mir collected a wicket as well to be adjudged Player of the Match

No warm-ups for New Zealand ahead of India Tests

New Zealand tour of India 2012

August 23-27 – 1st Test, Hyderabad
August 31-September 4 – 2nd Test, Bangalore
September 8 – 1st T20, Visakhapatnam
September 11 – 2nd T20, Chennai

New Zealand will play two Test matches and two Twenty20 internationals in India as part of their preparations for the ICC World T20 in September in Sri Lanka. The BCCI has confirmed that the first Test will be played in Hyderabad from August 23, followed by the second in Bangalore from August 31. The fixtures, however, did not include an warm-up games. The teams will then head to Visakhapatnam for the first T20 international on September 8 and then to Chennai on September 11 for the second. New Zealand last toured India in 2010, losing the Test series 1-0 and the ODIs 5-0.New Zealand will be without their head coach John Wright, who said he would step down after the West Indies tour ends in early August, shortly before the India series. New Zealand is currently ranked eighth in the ICC Test rankings, while India have slumped to fourth after calamitous tours of England and Australia over the last year.

Despite loss, Lehmann impressed with bowlers

Deccan Chargers coach Darren Lehmann has said he is confident that a better batting and fielding effort can help them end their winless run in this IPL season

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Apr-2012Deccan Chargers coach Darren Lehmann has said he is confident that a better batting and fielding effort can help them end their winless run in this IPL season. He was speaking after Chargers’ five-wicket loss to Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday when they took the game to the last over despite defending 126.”I was really proud of the way we fought with the ball. The pleasing thing which I love from a young group of players is that we keep fighting, that’s four games in a row we’ve gone down to the last over,” Lehmann said. “We were about 15 short with the bat but they bowled well. We should have made about 145. I think we lost five for 40 in the last eight overs when we were two down. It was a tough wicket to play on, but we should have made 145.”Lehmann has criticised his side’s fielding in the past and did it again, after Anand Rajan dropped Debabrata Das with 17 needed off 14 deliveries. “You always like to take those catches,” he said. “We needed to take that catch and we’d have been in the game. For me it’s just about getting some facets of our game right. Ticking off the boxes in the middle order, holding our catches and bowling like we did tonight. If we do that, we’ll win games.”He was also critical of Knight Riders’ batsmen and their inability to handle the Chargers fast bowlers. “Manoj Tiwary and Das could not handle [Dale] Steyn or Veer [Pratap Singh]. He [Tiwary] won’t be playing for India much longer.”Tiwary and Steyn shared words in the 16th over, and the batsman was almost run out when he strayed from his crease during the exchange. Lehmann said, “The shorter you bowl to these players the more they struggle. Then they hit one down to long-on.”Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir said that his side did well in testing conditions. “It was a good game of cricket. You want to play such games to test yourself in such conditions. Low-scoring games are very important in the tournament. It should not always be a high-scoring game. There have to be wickets for the bowlers as well, because they also come to play a game of cricket.”He also defended allrounder Yusuf Pathan, who has struggled with the bat through the tournament. “For me he is the biggest match-winner [and] if we can win games without him then that shows the depth in our team. I’m sure he will end up winning two or three games single-handed for us,” Gambhir said. And if Lehmann voiced doubts over Tiwary’s international future, Gambhir backed Das to do well. “Das has a lot of quality. If he keeps playing like this, then he will play for India.”

India facing ordeal after Clarke's triple-century

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMichael Clarke celebrates his triple-hundred•Getty Images

Matthew Hayden, Mark Taylor, Don Bradman, Michael Clarke. That is the list of the men with the highest Test scores for Australia after a day on which Clarke not only wrote himself into the record books but also declared early enough to give his side a strong chance to push for victory over India. Clarke ended Australia’s innings with his own score on 329, choosing neither to seek the glory of chasing down Brian Lara’s world-record 400, nor even Taylor’s iconic 334, the best score by an Australian Test captain.Instead, he chose drinks in the middle session – the halfway point of the game – to declare Australia’s innings closed at 4 for 659. His partner, Michael Hussey, had just reached 150. His thinking as he and Hussey walked off to a standing ovation from the SCG crowd was clear: on a good pitch, Australia would need time to bowl India out, especially with the chance of rain on the fourth day. Personal milestones meant nothing. The team goal was all that mattered.By the close of play, Australia had two of the ten wickets they wanted. Virender Sehwag had gone in the fourth over of the innings. He flashed hard at a wide ball from Ben Hilfenhaus and was brilliantly snapped up at point by David Warner, whose split-second leap up and to his left allowed him to clasp his hands around the ball and remove India’s quickest scorer for 4.Hilfenhaus also accounted for Rahul Dravid, who was bowled for the third time in the series. On 29, Dravid moved his front foot across in line with off stump but left enough of a gap for the bowler to nip a ball in between bat and pad. The Wall is in desperate need of some mortar, but don’t expect the former bricklayer Hilfenhaus to supply it.At stumps, India were 2 for 114, still trailing by 354, and the Australians needed to find a way through the defences of Sachin Tendulkar, who was on 8. Unexpectedly, given his struggles in the first three innings of the series, it was Gautam Gambhir who was giving them the most trouble. He had reached 68 and was playing positively, having struck nine boundaries.Already he had his highest Test score in more than a year. However, Gambhir had been given a life on 66 when James Pattinson found his outside edge in the dying stages of the day. Brad Haddin dived to his left and for the second time in the series moved too far; the ball sailed between his arms while his gloves kept moving further towards first slip. The Australians knew it could be a costly let-off, for runs had flowed easily for Clarke and Hussey on the third day. In three hours of cricket, they added 177 for the loss of no wickets. In fact, from 4.43pm on the opening day of the match until 2.10pm on the third day, Australia had put on 622 runs for the loss of just one wicket, that of Ricky Ponting, who fell for 134 midway through the second afternoon. And while Hussey finished with 150 not out, the third day was all about Clarke. He not only became the sixth man to score a Test triple-century for Australia, his innings was also the best by an Australian captain in a home Test, surpassing Bradman’s 270 at the MCG in 1937. It also broke Tip Foster’s 108-year-old record for the highest score in an SCG Test; his 287 on debut was passed when Clarke drove a boundary through extra cover. That was a record that could not be overstated, especially in the SCG’s 100th Test. Over the years, 3747 times batsmen have walked out on to the Sydney Cricket Ground to commence a Test innings. In all of those performances, nobody has ever scored as many as Clarke did over the past three days. He went to lunch on 293, and it took barely ten minutes after the break for his triple-century to arrive. It came with a flick off his pads for a boundary off Ishant Sharma, an appropriate shot for Clarke had punished anything on his legs throughout the innings. In truth, there was hardly a region of the ground in which Clarke didn’t score freely: he drove through off and down the ground, cut, pulled and glanced with ease. He was slow out of the blocks on the third morning, ensuring he got himself set again, but never did his innings stagnate. He was helped by the presence of Hussey, who became the third centurion in Australia’s innings. In a 334-run partnership with Clarke, Hussey kept the scoreboard ticking over at a reasonable rate. He brought up his 16th Test hundred with a single tickled towards third man off Sehwag’s offspin shortly before lunch, and he pumped his fists with delight.Although it was Hussey’s fifth Test century since the start of the Ashes last summer, he had also fallen for three golden ducks during his past nine innings. At no did India seriously look like breaking the partnership, although R Ashwin bowled an impressive, searching spell in the opening session. The action in the middle became so predictable that in the ABC radio commentary box Harsha Bhogle and Kerry O’Keeffe entertained listeners by challenging each other to eat the world’s hottest chilli. Meanwhile, in the Channel Nine box, Ian Healy quizzed Bill Lawry on pigeon diseases. But all eyes were fixed on Clarke as he reached his triple-century, and when he declared less than an hour later. It was a captain’s innings in every way, just as he delivered in Cape Town against South Africa in November. Australia lost that Test. Clarke made sure they won’t lose this one.

Butt and Amir have appeals dismissed

The Lord Chief Justice has rejected the appeals of Salman Butt and Mohammad Amir against their sentences in the spot-fixing case

Andrew Miller at the Royal Courts of Justice23-Nov-2011The former Pakistan captain Salman Butt and the teenage fast bowler Mohammad Amir will remain in prison for their full terms of 30 months and six months respectively, after their appeals against the sentences imposed at the spot-fixing trial were dismissed by the Court of Appeal on Wednesday.Butt and Amir’s cases were heard in front of a three-man panel headed by the Lord Chief Justice, Igor Judge. Neither man attended the hearing, which was wrapped up inside two hours as Lord Judge stated that cricket would be “utterly impoverished” if the original punishments were allowed to be overturned.”This is a notorious and essentially simple case,” said Lord Judge after hearing the submissions from the players’ lawyers. “It was spot-fixing. Three no-balls were bowled, in effect, to order. It was a betting scam, and they were very well rewarded. In the original trial, Butt had pleaded not guilty on two counts, conspiracy to cheat and conspiracy to accept corrupt payments. His counsel, Ali Bajwa, admitted for the first time that his client had been implicated in the plot to bowl deliberate no-balls during the Lord’s Test in August 2010, but argued that he had only been tempted in a one-off capacity by the size of the bung, £150,000, offered by the .Bajwa presented a skeleton argument in his client’s defence, drawing parallels with the MPs expenses scandal, in that the fall from grace from a high-profile position should be taken as punishment in its own right. Butt, he added, was a “broken man” as a result of his involvement in the scandal, but 30 months was a “disproportionate” punishment.Furthermore, Butt’s defence argued that seeing as he had not actually bowled any one of the three no-balls at the centre of the plot, there was a case of “objectionable disparity” between his sentence of 30 months and the 12-month jail term received by Mohammad Asif, who has lodged a separate appeal against his conviction having brought in a new defence team. However, in a damning summary, Lord Judge described the former Pakistan captain as a “malign influence” and reiterated the opinion of Justice Cooke, who had presided over the Southwark trial, that he was the “orchestrator” of the plot. “His duty as captain was that if there was the faintest whiff of corruption, he was to step in and stop it,” Lord Judge added.”This corruption was carefully prepared,” he said. “It was not the spur of the moment or a sudden temptation to which either applicant succumbed … These three cricketers betrayed their team, the country they had the honour to represent, the sport that gave them their distinction, and all the followers of the game around the world.”What was required of them was that at all times they should give of their best. If for money or any extraneous reward, this cannot be guaranteed … then all the advantages enjoyed from those who watch cricket will eventually be destroyed.”In normal circumstances, Lord Judge added, he would have ruled Butt’s appeal “unarguable”, but he wanted to hear his submission in conjunction with that of Amir, towards whom he showed some sympathy in describing him as a “prodigious talent lost to cricket”, but whose failure to co-operate fully with the ICC hearing in Doha in January ultimately undermined his appeal.Amir’s counsel, Henry Blaxland, had called for his client to be released immediately, on the grounds that a suspended sentence would suffice in the circumstances, given the time he has already spent in jail. Blaxland argued that the age of Amir, who was just 18 at the time of the offence, should also be taken into account.Amir’s decision to plead guilty was “courageous”, added Blaxland, while the public remorse he showed in his final statement to the court at Southwark was “worthy of full and proper recognition”. However, the Lord Chief Justice, a cricket follower, remarked that he had spent a lot of time “trying to bamboozle the ICC” during the Doha hearing.”The situation for Amir was much less culpable,” said Lord Judge. “But we cannot give the view that it was extinguished. He was open to the malign influence of Butt, but he can have been in no doubt about the risks and dangers of corruption, and how they would be dealt with. It was an elementary part of his education as a Test cricketer.””This prodigious talent has been lost to cricket,” he added. “Cricket will be poorer for the loss. But in the longer term the game would be utterly impoverished if the court did not recognise that this is criminal conduct of a very serious kind that must allow for a criminal sanction. A short custodial sentence was appropriate. We see no reason for interfering in the decision of the court.”
