Tom Moody, the former Australia international and Sri Lanka coach, will venture into administration by taking up a role as director of cricket for the Caribbean Twenty20 Premier League following its successful first tournament in 2013.However, his acceptance of a position that will dovetail neatly with his coaching of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL and a range of television commitments does not mean that Moody is ruling out the England coaching role left vacant by Andy Flower.Previously approached by the ECB when they were weighing up options ahead of Flower’s appointment in early 2009, Moody declined for family reasons after only recently returning home to Perth. But five years on, with his children almost done with high school, he is more open to greater travel.”The England job is one that I think any aspiring coach would, depending on the timing of their life, want to take on, and I’m no different from that,” Moody told ESPNcricinfo. “When the opportunity came up five years ago the timing wasn’t right from a personal perspective, but I look at it from the point of view that I’m lucky to have a pretty unique balance of roles currently. So it’s not something I’ve sent emails or made phone calls enquiring about, but if it presents itself I’ll look at it seriously and see what unfolds.”When Andy got it was when I’d first come back to Australia [after coaching Sri Lanka] and the reason I got off the circuit was the timing, from a personal point of view. It was time for me to put some roots down and see my kids through senior school. I’ve got one at university now and one completing senior school. I didn’t want to miss that, so when it did present I thought, as much as it was an attractive opportunity with that group of players, it worked against everything I’d made the move back home to Perth for.”Having declined to enter the race for the job in 2009, Moody coached Western Australia until 2010, and enjoyed a successful start with Sunrisers Hyderabad, taking them to the IPL finals last year. He had been asked about a coaching role in the CPL following on from that, but has now accepted a wider remit to oversee the progress of the tournament and its recruitment of the best players, coaches and support staff available.”Basically I’ll be looking after all cricketing aspects, from trying to attract the best players to the best support staff and coaches, whether in the Caribbean or internationally,” he said. “Also in regard to the league itself, making sure it’s run as professionally as possible, so casting my cricketing eye and expertise over the running of the tournament, and being accountable to the media on all cricketing matters – it’s all encompassing really.”Once the format has been outlined you tend to have a lot of people showing interest in wanting to be involved, in a coaching capacity, or physio, trainer, players, and you get inundated with managers getting in touch. It is no different to what I’m involved in with the IPL at Sunrisers Hyderabad, but I’ll be looking at it from an umbrella point of view where we’ve got six franchises. I’ll be looking to help make sure we have the best, right across the six franchises.”Following an encouraging first edition of the event in 2013, the need for the CPL to develop into a strong source of growth for cricket in the region has been only enhanced by recent events at the ICC board table, where the “big three” of India, England and Australia have preached self-sufficiency while trying to push through a raft of fundamental changes to the game’s global structure.”Independent of what’s happening at the ICC at the moment, obviously that’s a concern for cricket, but what we saw from a distance in the first year in the CPL it has been something that has injected a huge amount of interest and enthusiasm to the game in the Caribbean,” Moody said. “It’s been a significant step towards West Indies cricket thriving.”As we’ve seen in Australia, you’ve got to have a vehicle that is performing to create interest. This summer we’ve had two vehicles in the Ashes and the BBL to generate enormous interest in the game at two different levels, for different demographics. What the CPL has done is instead of having a standard domestic competition it has created a tournament that has energised the game in the region. It is very early days, but West Indies cricket in three to five years will benefit enormously if not before then.”Carving out a clear space for the CPL in an increasingly cramped calendar may also turn out to be critical to the longevity of West Indies cricket. “Like the BBL and the IPL, people are very aware of how big a window they take in the calendar because you want the best players available for your tournament,” Moody said. “The CPL is not as well placed as the IPL for that and also doesn’t have the same salary cap, but what it does have is a shorter window, a month-long, intense tournament played at a very high level.”

Broad, Swann available for YB40 final

Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann have both been made available for Nottinghamshire in the Yorkshire Bank 40 final on September 21.

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Sep-2013Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann have both been made available for Nottinghamshire in the Yorkshire Bank 40 final on September 21.Broad and Swann were both rested from England’s ODI series against Australia but could play one final match this summer if Notts decide to select them for the Lord’s showpiece against Glamorgan. The issue of selecting England players for county duty is a contentious one. Swann has only played twice in the YB40 this season while Broad did not appear in the group stages or semi-final. But both players have been included in a 15-man squad for the final and will travel to Durham next week for Notts’ penultimate County Championship match to train alongside their team-mates.In 2007, Warwickshire declined to select Ian Bell when he was released by England for their Friends Provident semi-final with Hampshire and there is a school of thought that it is only fair in high profile matches to stick with the players who regularly appear for their county.Swann’s two appearances in the YB40 both came in victories in Group A at the start of May. He sent down seven overs for just 15 runs and also removed Steven Crook as Notts easily defended 287 against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road. Three days later he went wicketless but his eight over spell cost only 24 as Kent were restricted to 220 for 6. Notts went on to win via the Duckworth-Lewis method.Notts finished top of Group A before brushing aside Somerset in the semi-final at Trent Bridge. They are highly fancied to beat Glamorgan at Lord’s.

Burns' best too much for Durham

ScorecardJoe Burns hit a career best 81 and Anthony Ireland claimed four wickets as Leicestershire snatched a dramatic 11-run victory against Durham in the Friends Life t20 at Grace Road.Australian Burns hit four sixes and six fours in his 52-ball innings and with Greg Smith hammering 67 off 45 balls Leicestershire posted 176 for 5 after being put in to bat.A brilliant 69 from Phil Mustard put Durham in with a chance of victory until they suddenly lost four wickets in seven balls without scoring a run, and were bowled out for 165 in 19.5 oversIreland started the collapse by having Ben Stokes caught at deep midwicket by Matt Boyce for 35 off 21 balls. That ended a stand of 79 for the fourth wicket with Mustard, who was then out to Ireland’s next ball in identical fashion. It had been a typical Mustard innings, full of power hitting that brought him 50 off 39 balls. He faced 50 balls for his 69 that included eight fours and two sixes. His departure left Durham at 130 for 5 and two more wickets went at the same score in the next over from Shiv Thakor. Michael Richardson was smartly run out by the bowler and with his next ball Thakor trapped Ryan Pringle lbw.It was an astonishing turnaround and, despite some big hitting at the end from Gareth Breese, the Dynamos were left with too much to do to win. They needed 18 runs off the last three balls, and although Breese hit one six Ireland’s next delivery shattered his stumps. Breese made 29 off 12 balls and Ireland finished with a competition best return of 4 for 22.Smith, who was only in the side because Niall O’Brien was on international duty for Ireland, shared a second wicket stand of 81 in eight overs with Burns, hitting 11 fours and a six in what was only his ninth t20 game.It was Leicestershire’s first win in the competition this season, and puts them back in the mix in the battle for a place in the quarter finals.

Marsh half-century wins it for Kings XI Punjab

Shaun Marsh’s fighting half-century defied a Mumbai Indians to give Kings XI Punjab a hard-fought win

The Report by Firdose Moonda22-Apr-2012

Shaun Marsh’s fighting half-century defied a Mumbai Indians that had Sachin Tendulkar back from injury, a different mix of internationals – James Franklin and Thisara Perera instead of Richard Levi and Davy Jacobs – and a strangling spell from Kieron Pollard to give Kings XI Punjab a hard-fought win. Kings XI have extended their dominance over Mumbai to six wins from nine matches in IPL history and have got their 2012 campaign back on track, after they lost four of their opening six fixtures.A spirited and committed performance in the field allowed Kings XI to keep Mumbai to a manageable total. But, not for the first time in this IPL, they fell behind with the bat after a solid start. Marsh had to contend with Pollard’s near heroics, as he nipped out Mandeep Singh and David Hussey, who were both well settled. The required run-rate soared to over 11 runs to the over but Marsh whittled the total down, before striking two decisive blows, off Munaf Patel and Perera in the last two overs. Both shots went for six, giving Kings XI room to breathe and David Miller five deliveries to get the winning runs.Kings XI’s reply began methodically, right down to the scoring pattern. The openers scored 10 runs off the first over and six off the second, in that pattern, for six overs. As the start grew from solid to threatening, an increasingly frustrated Munaf, who was being targeted by the opening pair, was guilty of misfields and a mini-tantrum. If Mandeep and Saini were shaken by the sparks that were flying around them, they hid it well, and accumulated their runs through a series of proper cricket shots, elegant pulls and well-timed drives. The course of their innings changed when Saini was out lbw to Pragyan Ojha and Mandeep skied a Pollard slower ball to deep midwicket fielder. Pollard dried the runs up, using wily changes of pace, and ensured Kings XI’s path to victory would not be a simple one.Marsh and Hussey had to rebuild without losing sight of the required run rate, a juggling act that was tricky to balance. Hussey made the mistake of taking on Pollard and charged down, Pollard saw it coming and dropped it short, leaving Hussey to hole out to deep square leg.Apart from one Azhar Mahmood six, Marsh had to see the game to its conclusion himself. He pulled Munaf over midwicket to leave Kings XI with nine to get off the last over. Marsh all but finished it off with a one-handed six over deep point off the first ball of the last over, a low full toss, to ensure Kings XI’s efforts in the field did not go to waste.Mumbai Indians’ batting was pedestrian for the most part and it took an explosion between overs 11 and 15 to propel them to a competitive score. After choosing to bat, on a beautiful surface, they stuttered off the starting blocks. Their first run came after eight balls to and it was not until the 14th delivery that they found their first four. They reached the end of the 11th over on 65 for 2, with Sachin Tendulkar having showed glimpses of his exceptional touch in his comeback match before being run out.It was only then that Franklin decided to take his foot off the brake. He smoked left-arm spinner Bhargav Bhatt into the stands. Dinesh Karthik also took a boundary off an over that cost 19 runs and the hosts had had woken up.Karthik swept and reverse-swept Hussey, punished Mahmood’s full toss and short ball while Franklin continued to launch on the leg side, off Kumar. Their partnership looked dangerous and should have continued to flourish but Karthik was run out, against the run of play. He was looking for a second run after lofting the ball over extra cover but Franklin backed out and Karthik could not make his ground at the non-striker’s end.The run-out pegged them back considerably. No over after that had more than nine runs scored from it, even the 20th which included four wides. Mumbai managed only 34 runs in the last five overs to end the innings as they started it: too slowly.

Klinger double-ton denies Tasmania

ScorecardMichael Klinger scored his third first-class double-century as South Australia played out a draw with Tasmania at Adelaide Oval. The Redbacks batted through the fourth day for the loss of only two wickets to ensure the Tigers only took two points from the match, which means they will need at least first-innings points in their next game to have any chance of making the final.South Australia began the fourth day on 0 for 103 and they finished at 2 for 421, with Klinger unbeaten on 219. Just as importantly for a South Australia side that will almost certainly finish last this summer, there were encouraging signs from two of their young batsmen, Tom Stray and Travis Head, who each scored 90.Stray must have felt the pressure building leading in to this game, for he had played five first-class matches as a specialist batsman with a top score of 29. But he was the only man to score a half-century for the Redbacks in the first innings and followed it with an even better performance, although he missed the chance for a century when he was lbw to Jackson Bird.Head, 18, has made a promising start to his first-class career, having scored 57 in his second game and nearly reaching triple-figures in this, his third. He was caught off the bowling of Jason Krejza, who finished with 1 for 139 from 50 overs.
