Spurs move for Eberechi Eze could have shades of Dele Alli

Back in 2015, Tottenham swooped in at the last minute to complete a deadline day deal for Dele Alli, signing him for a reported fee of £5m from League One side MK Dons.

The England international has since proved himself to be an inspired signing for the Lilywhites, racking up 219 appearances across all competitions despite still only being 24.

The man signed by Mauricio Pochettino has found the back of the net 62 times and provided a further 54 assists, and is now valued at £57.6m by Transfermarkt.

As signings go, Alli has more than proved his worth for the club both on and off the pitch despite coming from a club in a lower division. And it’s exactly why Spurs should be going all out for QPR starlet Eberechi Eze this summer.

According to Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold, Spurs have scouted him during the season and are looking at him as a potential signing, and “that they also have a really good relationship with QPR and that will help with any potential negotiations”.

Eze has enjoyed a fine season with the Hoops this year in the Championship, scoring 12 times and setting up a further eight in just 37 games in the league.

And speaking back in March, former Spurs midfielder Jamie Redknapp waxed lyrical about the 21-year-old prospect, saying: “The Championship club have done a tremendous job of nurturing him, and I suspect we’ll see him in the Premier League sooner rather than later.  From what I hear, he has plenty of admirers already. Rightly so, too, because Eze clearly has that star quality.”

In a transfer window that is unlikely to see any big-money signings, bringing in Eze could be the kind of shrewd move from Jose Mourinho that has those echoes of Alli’s arrival at the club.

They are likely to command reduced fees, and have far greater room for development, and Eze has actually been doing the business in a division higher than what Alli was doing with MK Dons.

It’s the kind of under the radar signing that could pay off big time over the coming years for Spurs.

Newcastle fans react over Abderrazak Hamdallah transfer report

Newcastle United’s prospective takeover has come with plenty of transfer reports – ranging from the obscene to now the obscure.

The likes of Kalidou Koulibaly, Nabil Fekir and Philippe Coutinho have all been linked with a move to the northeast giants following a successful change in ownership.

And now it’s claimed that the new Saudi owners want to sign a player in their home country in Al-Nassr striker Abderrazak Hamdallah, as per Foot Mercato.

Some of the Magpies faithful have been reacting to the news on social media as a result.

The 29-year-old has been a bit of a goal machine in the Middle East. This season, Hamdallah has scored 26 goals in 25 appearances, which is merely following up an impressive tally of 49 goals in 35 games last season.

Foot Mercato also claim that the Moroccan forward would cost the club €18m (£15.7m) as that’s his release clause while Premier League rivals Aston Villa are also said to hold interest.

Leeds fans recognise Stuart Dallas’ importance, one likens him to James Milner

Stuart Dallas has been at Leeds for nearly four-and-a-half years but he is now beginning to establish himself as a firm favourite of the supporters. He has taken a while to prove himself but some are convinced that he has made a dramatic improvement since the end of last season, for which Marcelo Bielsa must be credited. It is not all thanks to the Argentine, however, as it is the perseverance and attitude of never giving up that has served the Northern Ireland international so well.Watch Leeds United Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

He always has a determination to help his team in whatever manner possible, and that has led him to play in a number of different positions for the club, from left-back to right-wing.

One fan has pointed out the similarity between him and James Milner in that regard, who also offers the same kind of selflessness for Liverpool, with another stating that he is the type of player “every good team needs”.

Leeds’ Eddie Nketiah given reason to be fearful

Patrick Bamford is the definition of a marmite figure. You either love him or you hate him, and in the eyes of many supporters at half time on Saturday afternoon, the feeling was one of disdain.

The 26-year-old had struck the post in the opening 45 minutes before being berated by fans over the interval.

At times this term, he’s received staunch criticism but he’s also been applauded for his work rate. However, come full-time at Kenilworth Road, there must have been a feeling of love.

Not only did Bamford open the scoring but he also slid the ball home to win his side the game on 90 minutes.

For someone who hadn’t scored in ten games prior to netting against Blackburn before the international break, his movement oozed of someone with confidence.

The former Middlesbrough man is very much a form player. He bagged four in his first five outings of the season but after a run of dreadful outings, there were calls for Eddie Nketiah to start.

[ad_pod ]

He is still yet to achieve that in the league and he’s made his feelings all too clear. It didn’t seem to matter how poorly Bamford performed, he’d always get the nod.

A recent injury halted his chances just as it looked as though he may be due a run of starts but with his competition for a place in the side now back among the goals, he should be fearful.

The above image is from Bamford’s first goal against the Hatters on Saturday. He took the ball in his stride and then fired it unerringly past James Shea in goal. It was a tidy finish and one that should strike fear into Nketiah’s body.

Coming back from injury is never easy but now it’ll be even harder given Leeds’ number nine is fit and firing.

For Nketiah, his chances of breaking into the team look at an all-time low.

Charlton fans laud Dillon Phillips after 2-2 draw with West Brom

Charlton Athletic moved into eighth in the Championship table on Saturday evening following a 2-2 draw over league leaders West Brom.

Lee Bowyer’s men went behind early on to a Matty Phillips strike, but they found themselves level just after an hour as Macauley Bonne headed home his fourth in as many games.

There was then a moment of controversy as the referee sent off Grady Diangana instead of Nathan Ferguson before he finally corrected his decision, though that didn’t stop the home side thinking they had won the match after substitute Hal Robson-Kanu curled one home nine minutes from time.

The Addicks were gifted a penalty in the 94th minute after Naby Sarr was brought down inside the area, to which Josh Cullen duly stepped up and dispatched to clinch a point at the Hawthorns.

Following the match, goalkeeper Dillon Phillips took to Twitter to share some thoughts on the performance, which has led to several of the Charlton fanbase throwing heaps of praise behind the 24-year-old.

One supporter claimed that an England call up couldn’t be too far away with another expressing similar thoughts by saying Nick Pope’s place is in jeopardy after his shot-stopping performance.

Others labelled him a ‘beast’ and ‘unbelievable’ with one more member of The Valley faithful believing his showing was worthy of the Man of the Match award.

Crystal Palace legend Mile Jedinak names his ‘worst’ moment at the club

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Crystal Palace legend Mile Jedinak has given an interesting interview to The Athletic about his time at Selhurst Park, with some intriguing snippets to say the least.

The former Australia international – who made 179 appearances for the Eagles across a five-year stay – captained the Eagles to a first FA Cup final in 26 years, and also led them to the unlikeliest of promotions back in 2013.

Jedinak, a dominant midfield presence, departed SE25 after being stripped of the captaincy by Alan Pardew and sold to Aston Villa, but he is still fondly remembered as a club icon – the club’s Twitter account even called him a ‘legend’ themselves.

While speaking to The Athletic, Jedinak named his worst Palace moment, and it is one that is hard to argue with.

What did he say?

The 35-year-old said: “You knew Crystal Palace don’t often make FA Cup finals. Why not be the first ones to lift an FA Cup? It almost was us. That’s the hardest thing to take from it all.”

Club correspondent Matt Woosnam also wrote about how Jedinak described the 2-1 defeat to Manchester United as his ‘worst’ moment at the club and the ‘only regret’ from his stay in SE25.

Hard to disagree

The south Londoners have never won a significant trophy, and were just over ten minutes from doing so after Jason Puncheon’s 78th-minute strike at Wembley back in 2016.

In truth, Pardew’s side should have seen the game out from then on and become history makers, winning the first trophy in the club’s history and becoming legends in doing so.

A win also would have seen Palace compete in Europe with a passage into the Europa League, which would have enabled Jedinak to write another beautiful chapter in his story with the Eagles.

Given how close the Aussie and his teammates were to winning the FA Cup, and the manner in which they threw it away – the Eagles conceded almost immediately after scoring the opener – it is especially hard to disagree with what Jedinak describes as his ‘worst’ moment at the club.

And considering Pardew was involved in both the final and the club’s dismissal of their ‘legend’, we don’t think the former Newcastle boss will be on Jedinak’s Christmas card list.

Tottenham boss Pochettino handing Eric Dier start can kill two birds with one stone

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino will kill two birds with one stone if he hands Eric Dier his first start – and minutes – of the season against Leicester City on Saturday.

On the chalkboard

Spurs showed their defensive vulnerabilities again during the week as Olympiacos fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 in Athens, and it has been a familiar theme for the north London outfit this season.

They did exactly the same against arch-rivals Arsenal earlier this month, while they also fell behind against Aston Villa and Newcastle United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – they rescued a win in the former but suffered a shock defeat in the latter.

It is clear that the defence needs more midfield protection and that something needs to be done about it, and Dier could be the man to fix the issue.

Defensive shield

The England international appears to often divide opinion among the Spurs faithful, but there is no doubt that he would provide that backline with the protection it sorely misses when the likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko play in central midfield.

He would also bring that positional discipline that can be missing from those players who aren’t out-and-out defensively-minded.

Yes, the 25-year-old needs to improve when in possession of the ball even if his average passing success was 84.9% in the Premier League in 2018/19 according to WhoScored, but he can also be important when it comes to making those all-important tackles and interceptions, 1.3 and 1.1 respectively per game on average last term.

More flexibility to change system in-game

As well as acting like a shield in front of the back four, the great thing about Dier is that because of his versatility, he can also drop back in-between Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen to form a three-man partnership at centre-back, with his presence allowing Danny Rose and Serge Aurier even more freedom to get forward as wing-backs.

The latter in particular was hugely effective against Crystal Palace last time out with one assist and another cross that Patrick van Aanholt put into his own net, but he may not have the same attacking freedom away from home against a side like Leicester if Winks and Sissoko were in central midfield.

It would be a different story with the deep-lying Dier though, with the counter-attack a potentially useful option for Spurs at the King Power on Saturday.

Leeds’ Tyler Roberts confirms that he’s ready to return after injury problems

The youngster captioned the photo ‘Back healthy’, and that will certainly be music to the ears of many Whites fans.

Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Roberts has been out of action since late April with a knee issue, and before his injury, he was on his way to becoming a key man in Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

He’d stepped into the attacking midfield role after Samu Saiz’s departure in January, and fans were quite impressed with how he was getting on in his new position.

Whether or not he comes back to play a key part this season remains to be seen, but even if he doesn’t, having some extra depth in a problematic position will undoubtedly aid Leeds in their promotion push.
