West Ham fans fume over Aaron Cresswell’s performance in EFL Cup win

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United booked their spot in the third round of the EFL Cup courtesy of a 2-0 victory at Newport County on Tuesday night.

It was far from a vintage performance from the Hammers, although it would probably be fair to say that their Premier League quality ultimately proved too much for the hosts.

Jack Wilshere and Pablo Fornals scored the goals for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, who were also victorious away to Watford in the Premier League at the weekend.

Aaron Cresswell has already had a tough time from the West Ham fans in the early stages of the 2019-20 campaign.

And many took to social media on Tuesday evening to slam the Englishman’s performance at Rodney Parade.

Cresswell was guilty of some lacklustre moments during his 90 minutes on the field, and the West Ham supporters were very upset with what they saw on the night.

Arsenal: Fans desperate to see German youngster sign for the club

Arsenal fans are desperate to see Kai Havertz sign for the club after he spoke to Sky in Germany, refusing to rule out a move away from Bayer Leverkusen (Sky Germany via The Metro).

The north London giants are one of a host of clubs interested in signing the star, with Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona also said to be interested.

Indeed, the Germany international enjoyed a brilliant campaign with Leverkusen last season, scoring 20 goals in all competitions. The 20-year-old has started this season in a similar vein, scoring in the opening league game against SC Paderborn and in the German cup.

It is thought the German club are confident of fetching a similar fee to the £113m Benfica collected for young star Joao Felix.

Fans seemed to be giddy with excitement at the thought of signing the playmaker, as they took to Twitter to react.

Here is a selection of tweets from the north London faithful:

Everton should not make Fabian Delph captain, despite Stan Collymore’s suggestion

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Everton recently landed their third signing of the summer when they moved to secure Fabian Delph from Manchester City, in a deal said to be worth up to £10m.

The England international was pushed further down the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium after the arrivals of Rodri and Angelino, so his decision to join the Toffees makes sense in that regard.

Delph, 29, has signed a three-year deal and is a fantastic addition for such a small fee. He brings a wealth of experience, versatility and talent to Marco Silva’s side, and Stan Collymore certainly seems to think the Toffees have made a good signing.

Check out some amazing tekkers in the video below…

What did he say?

In The Sunday People (21/07, page 55), the former Liverpool man said: “Delph could be very good for the club in the same way Phil Neville was when he joined from Manchester United in 2005. Neville demanded that standards be higher and was a force for good – and Delph will do the same.

“I’d give him the captain’s armband too and tell the rest of them to follow the leader because he will set the tone.”

A ludicrous suggestion

How many new signings go straight into the side and become captain?

It has even been argued that the former Leeds man wouldn’t even get into Silva’s preferred starting XI, so it seems far-fetched to say that Delph should be handed the armband and play a shining role as Collymore seems to think.

There are already players worthy of being captain at Goodison Park. Seamus Coleman has been there for a decade now. Michael Keane has emerged as somewhat of a leader. Coleman is even captain for his country – presumably, handing the armband to a new boy would raise a few eyebrows on Merseyside.

You can appreciate where Collymore is coming from, but to say that he should immediately be appointed captain and the others should ‘follow’ him is doing a disservice to the other key cogs at Everton.

Manchester United fans react to Harry Maguire tweet that quashed rumours

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Manchester United fans have taken to Twitter to react to Harry Maguire’s Twitter post.

The England international moved to quash rumours of a move to Old Trafford after he himself ignited them by liking an Instagram post tipping him to become a fan favourite at United if he makes the move.

Watch a Man Utd fan’s epic Ed Woodward rant in the video below…

United tried to sign the former Hull man after last summer’s World Cup, in which the 6 ft 4 colossus starred for his country on their way to making the semi-finals of the tournament.

The Leicester centre-back has been linked with a move to both the Red Devils and their rivals Manchester City, with a switch to the Etihad looking the more likely.

Maguire tweeted: “I didn’t mean to guys… we’ve all been there,” as he moved to put the rumours to bed, although all he managed to do was get the United fans talking about him even more in the comments section.

By no means has the 26-year-old done anything to help fizzle the rumours out, so let’s take a look at what some of the United fans on Twitter have been saying about his tweet…

Two reasons Liverpool are making the right decision in preparing to sell Harry Wilson

[ad_pod ]

Mirror have reported that Liverpool are set to put Harry Wilson in the shop window and cash-in on the youngster after an incredibly successful loan season over at Frank Lampard’s Derby County. The 22-year-old netted a total of 16 goals in the Championship while playing as a midfielder.

With of all that in mind, the Reds might still not have enough room for him in their star-packed squad and even though he’s talented, Wilson might end up as a spare part at Anfield. Jurgen Klopp knows what he’s doing and here are two reasons why this course of action is actually the right one for Liverpool…

Liverpool have better options

Wilson is really young and there’s no telling how good he might become in the future but with a slight glance at Liverpool’s current squad, it’s rather difficult to see him make a breakthrough and feature on a consistent basis. Sure, in time, if he is groomed and handled well, that could happen, there’s no denying that. But it’s difficult for a youngster to fight for his spot with big-name players the Reds already have at their disposal.

If the likes of Naby Keita, who was already a star in making when he joined, struggle to make an impact, which was evident in his stats, Wilson might face an even bigger mountain to climb.

On top of that, with all their success in the Championship, Derby County are no Liverpool. Scoring 16 goals will always be viewed as a massive achievement, especially for a midfielder, but a jump to the Premier League often proves to be too big of a step to take in such short notice.

Cashing in to address weaknesses

Derby County have done two things for Wilson: they’ve given him an environment to thrive and showcase his skills and have also managed to up his estimated market value. The Mirror claim that Liverpool want £21m for the youngster – an incredible figure considering he’s only ever made one senior appearance for them.

This goes hand in hand with their visions of strengthening the squad this summer with players that are more in sync with what Klopp wants to see at Anfield.

Goal report that the Reds need a new full-back and a potential multi-functional forward as the German manager seeks some relief for his star trident up front. Judging by those targets, Wilson hardly fits the brief and the money the Merseysiders are set to get from him could very well be invested in some more urgent and bigger signings in the near future.

Celtic: Filip Benkovic must be retained to keep defensive solidity

Now officially into the second Neil Lennon era, Celtic are surely set for major changes to, not only their system, but their squad as well.

With the season officially ended, all the loan players will be heading back to their parent club, but the magic of Parkhead may have tempted them to come back for more.

Indeed, the towering Filip Benkovic is one player who deserves to be recalled next season. The 21-year-old’s open (as per the Scottish Sun) to another move to Parkhead and, with their fairly shaky defensive line, Lennon could do well with the vibrant defender.

Benkovic – who hasn’t ruled out a return – had a decent season in the Scottish Premiership, helping the Hoops keep 13 clean-sheets from 19 league games. With Dedryck Boyata on his way out and little cover for Kristoffer Ajer or Jozo Simunovic, the 21-year-old’s a better option than bringing in someone entirely new.

A veteran of the green and white cause already, he knows where Celtic’s strengths lie, helping fit into their system perfectly. Frankly, he just gets it.

The towering centre-back’s size and confidence in defending help with keeping a tight rope around the opposition attack. Benkovic is extremely comfortable with Ajer and can easily be rotated with Simunovic. Now with a season’s experience under his belt, he can command over oppositions to protect Celtic’s defensive frailties.

To strengthen their backline, Celtic must try to get Benkovic back. The Hoops are certainly owed a favour (to say the least) from former boss Brendan Rodgers and should go for the 21-year-old as soon as they can.

West Ham eye Shaqiri bid, Liverpool fans react

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Liverpool fans have been reacting to a surprising transfer rumour, as West Ham want to sign Xherdan Shaqiri for £22.5m.

According to The Daily Post, the Irons are eyeing Shaqiri as they prepare themselves for a busy summer.

Under the guidance of Manuel Pellegrini and Mario Husillos, the east-London outfit signed ten new players last summer, and will look to strengthen the squad again this term.

According to the report, the Reds have set a £22.5m asking price on the Swiss international after he fell down the pecking order in the second half of the season, and the Hammers are willing to stump up the cash.

However, many Reds are taking issue with the reports, wondering why the club would cash in on a player who added some much-needed attacking depth this season.

On the one hand, the club would be nearly doubling the £13m they paid for him last summer (BBC), but there is no point building a squad if you take it apart 12 months later.

Take a look at the Twitter reactions down below, where fans are completely against a sale…

Sheffield United: Wilder must consider signing Kasey Palmer in the summer

It has been quite a year to be a Sheffield United supporter, hasn’t it?

Under the guidance of Chris Wilder and Alan Knill, the Blades have exceeded all expectations this season with last week’s victory against Ipswich Town confirming their automatic promotion to the Premier League.

With a massive summer ahead for the club, it is clear that they will need to strengthen their squad in the transfer window in order to give themselves the best chance of competing in the top-flight.

One area that Wilder will be targeting specifically is central midfield as he will need to find a sufficient replacement for Kieren Dowell whose loan deal at Bramall Lane expires at the end of the month.

According to reports in the Sun (as quoted by HITC), the former Northampton Town boss may have already found his man as he has been linked with a move for Chelsea ace Kelsey Palmer.

The 22-year-old has enjoyed a brilliant loan spell at Bristol City this season and is one of the key reasons to why Lee Johnson’s side are still in contention for a play-off place in the Championship.

An exciting, skilful young prospect, Palmer has all the ingredients needed to succeed at the highest level yet in order to fulfil his potential, he may have to leave Stamford Bridge as staying at the Blues could hamper his development.

Therefore, if the £1.35m-rated midfielder (via Transfermarkt) is made available for transfer, Wilder must go all-out to secure his signature. Although Palmer has only been directly involved in four goals this season for the Robins, he could be the perfect fit for the Blades’ 3-5-2 system and it may be worth the risk to bring him in.

What do you think United fans? Should Wilder do everything he can to bring in Palmer in the summer? If not, who do you think he should be targeting when the transfer window opens in July? Let us know below.
