Azam leads UAE to victory

A round-up of Saturday’s Group A games in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Nov-2013
ScorecardUAE’s bowlers restricted Namibia to a middling total, which their batsmen chased with an over to spare to record their second win of the competition. After winning the toss, UAE reduced to 81 for 9 before the last-wicket partnership propped up the score to 120. Opener Christi Viljoen top scored with 35, while JJ Smit made 23 at No. 9. No one between them reached double figures. Rohan Mustafa was the pick of UAE’s bowlers, taking 3 for 14 in four overs.Mohammad Azam led UAE’s chase with a half-century, making 51 off 56 balls. Though they lost wickets at regular intervals after a steady start, UAE had enough resources to fall back on. Their captain Khurram Khan contributed 23 to a victory that was sealed in 19 overs.
ScorecardIreland’s Alex Cusack held his nerve in the last over to hand Canada their second loss in the tournament. Cusack was defending 14 runs against two set batsmen and was hit for a six off the third delivery that brought down the equation to seven off three balls for Canada. But he gave away only four runs in the next three deliveries. Canada’s Ashish Bagai and Ruvindu Gunasekera both scored half-centuries and shared a 125-run partnership after they had lost two wickets off the first two balls of the innings, but ran out of steam. Ireland were put into bat and lost two early wicket, but Kevin O’Brien and Niall O’Brien resurrected the innings with a 58-run stand before Trent Johnston’s quick 39 pushed the total to 166.
ScorecardTanwir Afzal starred with both bat and ball to help Hong Kong edge past Uganda in a tight match in Abu Dhabi. Afzal smashed 26 off 12 balls from No 8 after Hong Kong had been reduced to 69 for 6 in chase of 106. He hit two sixes and two fours in the innings and shared an unbeaten 34-run stand for the seventh wicket with Nizakat Khan to help the team cross the target with 11 balls to spare. Earlier, Afzal bowled a tight spell of 4-1-12-3 to restrict Uganda to 105. His three wickets came in the space of seven deliveries early in the innings and Uganda never picked up momentum in the innings as they lost regular wickets.
ScorecardA rapid innings by Italy opener Gareth Berg laid the foundation of Italy’s solid win against USA in a Group A match in Abu Dhabi. Berg smashed 15 fours and one six in his 47-ball 90 and helped Italy race to 112 in the 13th over by the time he was dismissed. Italy were left with 49 to get from seven overs and Carl Sandri hit 27 off 16 balls to ensure they got to the target with four balls to spare. USA’s innings was symmetrical to Italy’s with Steven Taylor scoring 91 in 56 deliveries, that included five sixes, but the target proved to be just short.

Coles displays talent with bat and ball

ScorecardMatt Coles, who has refused to sign a new deal with Kent, impressed with bat and ball on day two•Getty Images

Loan signing Matt Coles showcased his talent with both bat and ball as Hampshire put pressure on Worcestershire at New Road.Coles scored a 38-ball half-century as Hampshire took maximum batting points and then dismissed Matt Pardoe with his third ball when Worcestershire reached 101 for 2. James Tomlinson had Daryl Mitchell neatly taken at second slip by Liam Dawson but Moeen Ali and Thilan Samaraweera had reduced the deficit to 327 when bad light ended play. After rejecting a new contract with Kent, Coles joined Hampshire last month with five Championship matches remaining in which to show he could fit into a revamped squad at the Ageas Rose Bowl next summer. But while his seam bowling is the priority interest for potential employers, his ability to make runs as a combative left-handed batsman has come to the fore so far.Having held up Lancashire for three hours when scoring 68 in an unsuccessful attempt to deny the divisional leaders at Southport, he showed the aggressive side of his game when Hampshire needed quick runs to take final batting point. Five fours and three sixes took him to 50 not out by the time Graeme Cessford and Jack Shantry polished off the last two wickets in successive overs. In making their sixth first innings score of 400 or more this summer, Hampshire often profited from a short boundary on the River Severn side of the ground. Yet the second day actually began well for Worcestershire as they removed the overnight pair with only one run added to the score. When James Vince edged Alan Richardson’s first ball it was parried by Mitchell and held, with some irony, by Moeen at first slip – 102 runs after dropping Hampshire’s century-maker when he had made only 4. The alert Ross Whiteley pounced from cover to run out Adam Wheater but Sean Terry, returning to the four-day team after a break of 16 months, and Michael Bates regained control in a partnership of 77 in 24 overs. When Bates was lbw for 41, it was a well-deserved success for Richardson. The 38-year-old is now on 63 Championship wickets for the season after taking four for 69 in 34 overs. But Hampshire still had a lot more to offer. Sean Terry, son of former county player and coach, Paul, made a Championship-best 58 before clipping Whiteley to midwicket and Chris Wood waded in with 10 fours until he was lbw to Moeen for 61 from 66 balls.

Copeland looks to sign off in style

Australia international Trent Copeland tore through Worcestershire’s batting to put Northamptonshire on the brink of victory after two days

Australia international Trent Copeland tore through Worcestershire’s batting to put Northamptonshire on the brink of victory after two days.Northamptonshire were bowled out for 314 during the afternoon, giving the Division Two leaders a first innings lead of 118, with Steven Crook hammering 85 off as many balls including three huge sixes. Copeland, who is playing his last match before returning home, then took three wickets for 26 as Worcestershire subsided to 97 for 6 at the close, still 21 runs behind. The hosts began the day on 100 for 4, 96 runs behind their opponents, with Rob Keogh resuming on 26 and Andrew Hall beginning his innings. But Hall was only able to make 10 before Gareth Andrew took a good low catch at third slip to give Alan Richardson his fourth wicket in the seventh over of the day.Keogh was to move on to 44 but was denied a maiden half-century in first-class cricket when he edged Andrew to Moeen Ali at first slip to leave the hosts on 134 for 6.Crook was then given a massive let-off on 6 when he launched Andrew into the air only for Aneesh Kapil to drop a straightforward catch at deep square leg. He was to make Kapil pay for that blunder by blasting a half-century off just 52 balls as he and James Middlebrook added 96 between them for the seventh wicket. The partnership was eventually broken when Middlebrook was sharply caught and bowled by Ali to depart for 39 in the third over after lunch. Crook finally perished when his middle stump was taken out by Chris Russell before Copeland smashed the same bowler to Jack Shantry at mid-on after clattering 31.Russell then ended the hosts’ innings by trapping wicketkeeper David Murphy lbw for 4, leaving David Willey unbeaten on 15 at the other end.Worcestershire lost their captain Daryl Mitchell for just 8 in the penultimate over before tea when he left Crook’s delivery only to see his off stump sent spinning. Matthew Pardoe was then dismissed for 24 when he nudged Willey to Murphy before Copeland pinned Sri Lanka batsman Thilan Samaraweera lbw for 4.Copeland then repeated the trick on Alexei Kervezee and Kapil was caught leg before by Willey before wicketkeeper Michael Johnson became yet another lbw victim to Copeland. Ali and Andrew then survived the final 10 overs and will resume tomorrow on 29 and 16 respectively with their side surely doomed.

Strong Lahore Shalimar blow away Ravi

A round-up of the Quaid-e-Azam trophy matches on February 9, 2013

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Feb-2013
ScorecardA 12-wicket match haul from left-arm fast bowler Wahab Riaz, including a hat-trick, and a strong batting performance led Lahore Shalimar to a ten-wicket victory over Lahore Ravi in the first round of the Super Eights in the Quaid-e-Azam trophy. Riaz took nine wickets in the first innings as Ravi were shot out for 153, and took three wickets in their second dig, when Ravi faced an innings defeat after a 169-run first-innings deficit. Some resolve by their batsmen, however, helped them set a target of 87, which Shalimar overhauled on the final day without the loss of a wicket.Ravi’s openers started positively when they batted first, putting on 70, before Riaz had them struggling at 124 for 9. Riaz’s performance was backed up by half-centuries from Shalimar’s opener Imran Butt, Umar Akmal and his brother Kamran, which strengthened their grip on the contest.Ravi’s openers scored half-centuries to help erase their deficit, but no other batsman scored beyond 25 as Ravi were bowled out for 255. Shalimar’s Imam-ul-Haq scored an unbeaten 52 to help seal the victory.
ScorecardCenturies from Shoaib Ahmed and Babar Naeem helped Rawalpindi gain three points against Islamabad in a drawn game. The first day being washed out stole valuable time from the game, and by the end of the third day, when Islamabad scored 123 for 3, the possibility of an outright result was virtually over. After being put in to bat, Rawalpindi lost three quick wickets to be struggling at 42 for 3, before a 177-run stand between Shoaib and Naeem helped them recover. Although wickets fell regularly thereafter, a knock of 59 from Sohail Tanvir helped them get past 350. Islamabad, in reply, stuttered throughout their innings, as besides opener Raheel Majeed, who scored 78, and Imad Wasim, no one put up much resistance. Tanvir and seamer Hammad Azam shared seven wickets between them. With the lead being secured, the rest of the match didn’t have much relevance. Umar Amin scored a half-century to lead Rawalpindi to 187 for 4, before the match was drawn.
ScorecardIn Swabi, the first two days of the Bottom Six match was washed out but an all-round effort from Saeed Anwar jnr helped Multan clinch a first-innings lead and three points against Multan. Left-arm spinner Anwar took 5 for 14 off 14 overs to help bowl Abbottabad out for 131, and scored an unbeaten century as Multan reached a strong 220 for 4 on the final day, before the match was drawn.Abbottabad struggled after they were put in to bat as their top order flopped. No.7 Khalid Usman, who scored 30, was the top scorer as Anwar and fellow spinner Aamer Yamin took eight of their wickets. In reply, Multan lost the first wicket without a run being scored, before Zeeshan Ashraf, Yasir Butt and Anwar led the recovery.
ScorecardQuetta narrowly avoided defeat in the other game of the group of the six bottom teams, against Peshawar at the Arbab Niaz Stadium. With the first day being washed out, both teams forfeited their first-innings to try chase an outright result.A century from Nawaz Ahmed and an unbeaten half-century from Mohammad Rizwan took Peshawar to 322 for 7 on the third day. Opener Bismillah Khan, who scored 58, and No.3 Ali Asad, who scored a century, led Quetta’s strong reply before a collapse had them losing four wickets for 21 runs. But lack of time prevented Peshawar to get the final two wickets.

'Not an easy pitch to bowl on' – Roach

Kemar Roach and Tino Best vindicated the decision to put New Zealand in at Sabina Park, striking early and then breaking the resistance to give West Indies the upper hand. Roach claimed 4 for 70 and Best 2 for 40 on a pitch they said got harder to bowl on as the day progressed.”I would rate today’s effort as a good performance. It was not an easy pitch to bowl on – it offered some moisture in the early stages, but then it flattened out and made batting quite easy,” Roach said after play, with New Zealand all out for 260. “I put in the work, reaped some reward and I’m pleased with four wickets. They batted pretty well early on and we had to change our plans and come back at them in the final session.”Roach made the initial breakthrough, having BJ Watling caught at slip, and his new-ball partner Best struck shortly after – making Brendon McCullum edge behind. New Zealand were 11 for 2.”His pace was ‘up’ and he troubled the batsmen,” Roach said of Best. “I would say he was the pick of the bowlers for us. The role he played was fantastic out there today. It was pretty hot as well and he maintained his energy levels. That’s how Tino plays … wholehearted every day.”New Zealand recovered from losing two early wickets through a century stand between Ross Taylor and Martin Guptill, but Best returned to break that partnership. He had Taylor caught behind for 60, cutting a promising innings short, and New Zealand did not have any substantial stands after that.”I told myself to stay focussed and try to get the ball in the right areas,” Best said. “I was happy when I got McCullum early as that gave us a good start after we won the toss and put them in. After that it got harder, but I still kept my pace up and kept running in. In the end I was pleased with my effort.”Kemar was excellent and just keeps getting better as a bowler for us. I’m pleased for him. In our team we enjoy each other’s success and I was happy to support him today. To get 10 wickets on the first day is good; anyone would take that. We will look to build on the second day and push forward.”
