Caribbean trip offers Beer a chance

Will Beer, the Sussex legspinner, will return from club cricket in Australia to join Sussex’s trip to the Caribbean T20 tournament. The 10-team competition, also featuring Canada and Netherlands, takes place in January.Having played five times for England Under-19s, Beer has been attending the Darren Lehmann cricket academy and playing grade cricket for Port Adelaide. He will fly home and join the Sussex squad with batsman Matt Machan, who has been playing for Dandenong CC in Melbourne.Beer, 23, is looking to revive his career. Anura Ranasinghe dies in his sleep

Anura Ranasinghe, who died in his sleep on Monday night was one ofthe finest all-round cricketers produced by Sri Lanka and the firstschoolboy to play in the World Cup

Sa'adi Thawfeeq18-Aug-2011Anura Ranasinghe, who died in his sleep on Monday night, was one of the finest all-round cricketers produced by Sri Lanka and the first schoolboy to play in the World Cup.Ranasinghe never had the chance to fulfil his potential to the full at the highest level, because eight months after Sri Lanka had played their inaugural Test with England in February 1982, he went to South Africa with a Sri Lanka rebel side and along with 13 other players who undertook that tour was banned for a period of 25 years. The ban virtually ended his career as a cricketer, and Ranasinghe was never the same again until six months ago, when his club Bloomfield appointed him as the coach of their Under-23 and division III teams.Ranasinghe accompanied Bloomfield to Galle for their U-23 23 fixture last weekend. He returned home on Monday and having foregone his lunch, went to sleep. He never woke up afterwards, according to his sister Rohini. He was only 42 years at the time of his untimelydeath.Ranasinghe distinguished himself as a right-hand batsman and bowled left-arm medium-pace and slow spin. As an allrounder he was renowned for his fighting qualities, where on several occasions he had rescued his school Nalanda College and club from perilous situations withboth bat and ball. Renowned radio commentator Premasara Epasinghe and Nelson Mendis were Ranasinghe’s coaches at school through whom he learnt the rudiments of the game.Ranasinghe created history in 1975 when he became the first schoolboy to play in a World Cup when he represented Sri Lanka in the inaugural tournament in England at the age of 18 years. He played in all three matches against West Indies, Australia and Pakistan. He was unlucky not to make it to the final XI of Sri Lanka’s inaugural Test against England at the Sara Stadium in February 1982 when another schoolboy from the rival school Ananda College, Arjuna Ranatunga got the vote ahead of him, and went on to score a maidenTest fifty.Ranasinghe made his Test debut the following month against Pakistan at Faisalabad. He scored six and five (being caught on both occasions by Pakistan captain Javed Miandad) and sharing the new ball with Ashantha de Mel, captured the wicket of top scorer Ashraf Ali (58)for 23 runs. He played one other Test – against India at Chepauk that year – scoring an aggressive 77, before undertaking the illegal tour to South Africa.Ranasinghe also appeared in nine one-day internationals scoring 153 runs (avg. 21.85) and taking two wickets (avg. 140.50) and toured England in 1981, when Sri Lanka were elevated to the ranks of a Test nation. He also captained the Sri Lanka Under-25 team to South Indiaand successfully regained the Gopalan trophy against Tamil Nadu and also led Sri Lanka U-19s in the series against Pakistan in 1975 and 1976.”Anura had rare qualities of being a top fielder and a dual purpose left-arm bowler,” said Bandula Warnapura, Sri Lanka’s first Test captain and formerBloomfield stalwart. “He was a fighter to the core and took up any challenge. He was a tough guy on the field and was very outspoken.””He was a fine cricketer. Bloomfield has lost a good man,” added Bloomfield president Shelley Wickramasingha.Born in Colombo on October 13, 1956, Anura Nandana Ranasinghe was the fifth in a family of three brothers and three sisters. Two of his brothers – Lakshman Ranasinghe and Aruna Ranasinghe – were notable cricketers, representing Nalanda and Bloomfield. For a short period, Anura worked at Pelawatte Sugar Corporation. He married and has a son aged 12 years old.He is the second Test cricketer produced by Sri Lanka to depart, the first being Sritharan Jeganathan who passed away last year. The Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka have undertaken the funeral arrangements. His funeral will take place at the general cemetery, Kirillapone tomorrow.

Smith returns to form with a century

Batting hasn’t been much fun at Edgbaston this year but, after several weeks of famine, it was time for a feast

George Dobell at Edgbaston24-May-2011
ScorecardBatting hasn’t been much fun at Edgbaston this year but, after several weeks of famine, it was time for a feast. The day after Warwickshire lost their appeal for producing a poor pitch in the match against Worcestershire, they produced a surface so benign that it might have been designed to nurse an ailing batsman back to health. Which is, pretty much, exactly what it did.The chief beneficiary of the conditions was Will Smith. The leap of delight the 28-year-old gave upon reaching his century spoke volumes: this was his first three-figure score since September 2009 and, after the travails of last year, his joy was understandable.Smith endured a testing 2010. Despite leading Durham to the Championship title in 2009, he was sacked just four games into the new campaign after the side suffered their first loss in 21 matches. His own form also fell away – he averaged just 16 after seven innings – and, after May 10, he didn’t appear in the Championship side for the rest of the season. His future in the game was beginning to look uncertain. Here, however, he has looked utterly secure. Not only has he not given a chance, he’s barely played and missed despite batting all day. His method was simple: he left well, scarcely played a front foot stroke until after he had passed his century and waited for the short ball which he put away ruthlessly. His pulls, cuts and back-foot drives were particularly impressive. In partnership with Dale Benkenstein, Smith has so far added 221 for the fourth-wicket – a new Durham record for any wicket against Warwickshire – and ensured the visitors have made full use of winning an overly important toss.Afterwards, Smith admitted he had feared his career might have been over last year. “[Last year] was tough for various reasons,” Smith said. “Primarily, I need to be a batsman and I need to score runs. I wasn’t doing that and that was only ever going to be my fault. Batsmen are judged on hundreds; they are our currency. Until today, I was the only one in the top seven not to have scored a hundred. I had to rectify that.”Yes, I thought about chucking it away. But you try and push those thoughts out of your mind. I took some time off up until Christmas and just thought about how much the game means to me. I re-found that this winter. I’m doing something that millions of other people would like to do and I thank my lucky stars for that.”Without meaning to detract from Smith’s efforts, those ‘lucky stars’ are probably relevant. Had Mark Stoneman not broken his hand in the first game of the season, it is quite possible that Smith might, even now, be languishing in the seconds. Now, however, he has taken his chance on a heaven-sent wicket and will surely prove hard to displace. The rest of the Durham top-order will feel they missed out. Michael Di Venuto fell to a thin edge as he tried to withdraw the bat, Gordon Muchall pushed hard at one on off stump and edged to slip, while Ben Stokes’ promising innings was curtailed when he obligingly clipped a half-volley straight to mid-wicket. It could not have been what Geoff Miller, the on-looking National Selector, was hoping to see.In Benkenstein, however, Smith found a similarly determined ally. Both men were admirably disciplined and happy to wait on the back foot and pick off the runs when the opportunity arose.Warwickshire, however, might reflect that they didn’t make them wait as long as they should have done for those run-scoring opportunities. On a slow, flat wicket, the bowlers failed to maintain a tight enough line or length to create pressure and, dropping short frequently, were punished with merciless efficiency. They also donated 22 runs from no-balls. Boyd Rankin, conceding more than five an over and overstepping seven times, was the worst offender.Perhaps Warwickshire could take some pleasure amid the pain. The last two games at Edgbaston have been played on substandard wickets, culminating in the ECB penalising Warwickshire eight points after a panel deemed the pitch for the match against Worcestershire to be poor.Part of Warwickshire’s defence – that there was nothing more they could have done to produce a good wicket – offered more questions than answers. It suggested that Warwickshire were now so at the mercy of the conditions, that pitch-production had become something of a lottery: surely not an acceptable state for a Test ground? On this occasion they have taken no chances: on the first day, at least, batting here has been easy.In truth, however, this is not a good pitch. It is horribly sluggish, soaking up all pace and allowing batsmen to sit on the back foot and wait for the ball to sit up. After several games in which conditions at Edgbaston have favoured bowlers too much, the balance has now titled too far in the other direction. Rightly or wrongly, however, no-one at the ECB seems to mind if the batsman is on top. Inevitably, Mike Denness, the ECB Pitch Liaison Officer in attendance, passed the pitch as fine.

West Ham United: Roshane Thomas reveals Keane Lewis-Potter talks

West Ham United are ‘set to open talks’ with Hull City over winger Keane Lewis-Potter ahead of a proposed summer transfer, claims The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas.

The Lowdown: Lewis-Potter’s season

The 21-year-old has enjoyed a fantastic breakout campaign in the Championship this season, having netted 11 goals in 44 league appearances.

More impressively, he has played the full 90 minutes in every single one of these games.

Unsurprisingly, a number of clubs have expressed their interest in signing the youngster. Brentford had a bid rising to £8m rejected last summer, but following the youngster’s superb form this season, the fee needed will now be much higher.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-4/” title=”West Ham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Thomas’s news

According to a report by Roshane Thomas and The Athletic, West Ham are ready to make a move for Lewis-Potter.

Taking to Twitter, Thomas claimed: “West Ham are set to open talks over Hull City winger Keane Lewis-Potter, who is valued at around £18 million.”

In the adjacent article, it is claimed that the Irons are keen to do business with Hull again, following the success they have had with the arrival of Jarrod Bowen in 2020.

The Verdict: Promising talent

Described by former Tigers boss Grant McCann as “a special talent”, it is easy to see why West Ham would be interested in signing what could be a new Bowen.

Current manager Shota Arveladze has backed up these claims, having asserted that the 21-year-old plays “like Overmars”.

Therefore, with such talent available in the Championship, David Moyes should act quickly to secure the youngster’s arrival, perhaps saving some funds compared to buying from Europe’s elite leagues this summer.

Abhinav Mukund ton drives Rest of India

On a Jaipur pitch that offered no help to the bowlers, the Rest of India batsmen made merry on the opening day of the Irani Cup tie against Mumbai

The Bulletin by Abhishek Purohit01-Oct-2010Day 1
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Abhinav Mukund struck his ninth first-class ton•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

On a Jaipur pitch that offered no help to the bowlers, the Rest of India batsmen made merry on the opening day of the Irani Cup tie against Mumbai. Abhinav Mukund dominated proceedings with an unbeaten 156 and was supported by half-centuries from opening partner Shikhar Dhawan and S Badrinath. Mumbai, the Ranji Trophy champions, toiled hard but there was also enough indiscipline on offer from their bowlers. Their fielders didn’t help matters by dropping the couple of chances that came their way.Yuvraj Singh called correctly in the morning and had no hesitation to bat on a pitch that seemed to have very little moisture; whatever little there was, evaporated soon under the harsh sun. There was hardly any movement, in the air or off the seam, for Mumbai’s new ball pair of Ajit Agarkar and Dhawal Kulkarni. It was evident in the ease with which Dhawan got going as early as the third over, driving Agarkar twice in three balls for four through the gap between extra cover and mid-off.Mumbai had a golden opportunity to get an early breakthrough in the next over bowled by Kulkarni, when Mukund edged a delivery outside off between second and third slip. Omkar Khanvilkar dived across from third slip, got both hands to the ball but failed to hold on. Mukund was on eight then. He capitalised on that lapse by driving Kulkarni to the extra cover fence in his next over.Dhawan and Mukund shut the door on Mumbai after that, defending the ones pitched on a good length and punishing deliveries bowled full or short. Mumbai missed a third seamer, someone like Aavishkar Salvi who could have hurried the batsmen, as Usman Malvi was steady at best. Spin was introduced in the 14th over in the form of Ramesh Powar, and though the veteran off-spinner flighted the ball tantalisingly, there was neither much turn nor bounce on offer to trouble the batsmen. Moreover, Powar was guilty of overstepping eight times.Jaffer juggled his bowlers around, using as many as eight during the course of the day. Abhishek Nayar got some deliveries to skid a bit off the pitch but he was far too erratic to cause any worries for the batsmen. If Powar could not get anything out of the surface, it was unlikely that Iqbal Abdulla could; he was smashed for three consecutive fours by Dhawan in his third over.Mumbai’s second and last chance came a couple of overs before lunch when Malvi, running in from long leg, failed to latch on to a top-edge from Dhawan at deep square leg off Agarkar, despite diving and getting both hands to it. Rest of India went into lunch at 128 without loss.Dhawan and Mukund unleashed a flurry of boundaries after lunch as Mumbai wilted under the hot Jaipur sun. However, Dhawan – who had looked the more fluent of the duo – tried to hit one too many and struck a Rohit Sharma full toss straight to Abdulla at midwicket to depart for 83.At 167 for 1, Mumbai ran into the broad bat of Badrinath, who hardly looked ruffled throughout his stay, and hit some pleasing drives, and the only six of the day off Powar. Mukund meanwhile reached his ninth first-class hundred with a straight-driven four past Malvi, after being stuck on 99 for 14 deliveries.Mukund’s timing only got better after tea and one shot off Kulkarni pretty much summed up the day. Mukund straight-drove a full delivery and the ball sped past the mid-on fielder before he could even react. It was that kind of day for the Ranji Trophy champions. It sped past them in a blur of runs.

Morelos, Helander, Arfield Rangers worst

Glasgow Rangers failed to build upon their excellent UEFA Europa League win after they were held to a 1-1 draw in the Scottish Premiership at lunchtime.

Joe Aribo had to rescue a point for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side in the end, after Dundee United took a shock lead in the first half with a header from Ross Graham from a corner kick.

There were some underwhelming performances from the Ibrox faithful on the day, and The Transfer Tavern have now used statistical experts SofaScore to analyse who the three worst players (to have played at least 45 minutes) were:

Scott Arfield – 6.7

Admittedly joint with Allan McGregor in terms of rating (6.7), Arfield ranks in third here as the goalkeeper could not do much to stop the goal from Graham.

Arfield lost out on four of his duels, and also failed to record a single shot on target, interception or tackle, while also losing possession nine times.

Filip Helander – 6.5

Graham was Helander’s man, and the Sweden international lost him on the corner, so it is no surprise to see him get a low rating of 6.5.

Helander was unsuccessful in two of his duels, and also never managed a clearance or tackle, while he lost the ball on seven different occasions.

Alfredo Morelos – 5.9

Morelos was given the worst Teddy Bears rating by far, a mere 5.9.

The Colombia international lost seven duels, and missed with all five of his shots on goal, while he also lost the ball nine times.

Elanga must become first choice at MUFC

Manchester United picked up another three points in their challenge to secure a top-four place in the Premier League this season, and are now four points ahead of their competitors in fourth, after going unbeaten in their last five league games.

Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes, Fred and Anthony Elanga all found the back of the net during the fiery clash with Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon, with two of the goal-scorers, Fred and Elanga, substituted on to save Manchester United from dropping points when the game was 2-2 in the 67th minute, making a huge impact to steal the three points for their side away from home.

The double substitution really paid off for Ralf Rangnick, and only further proved that 19 year old, Elanga, has a huge part to play in the future successes of the side, with his impact this season the youngster has given the German coach a new attacking threat that he can rely on.

The Swedish national joined Manchester United’s youth academy when he had just turned 14 years old in July 2015, and has since risen through the ranks with impressive performances and consistency in both the U18’s and U23’s, scoring a combined 25 goals and bagging 15 assists for the youth teams in just 66 appearances, which clearly caught the eye of the first-team coaches.

Elanga was given his Premier League debut by former Red Devils manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, in May last year in the defeat against Leicester City, and this season has been given more chances to prove his worth, with a change of management only furthering his progression in the team if his performances are anything to go by under Rangnick.

All of his nine appearances in the Premier League this season have been under the interim Manchester United boss, with the youngster scoring two goals for the first team in just 371 minutes of game time, and Rangnick will be over the moon to see Elanga capitalising on his opportunities given, especially after he scored against Leeds at the weekend.

The £3.6m-rated star has been hailed a “nightmare” by Gary Neville who also likened the diverse forward to Thierry Henry after saying his finish against Salford City back in 2020 was “Thierry Henry-esque” and clearly he is now being favoured for selection over another youth academy star.

Marcus Rashford was also on the bench for the Leeds United game, but Rangnick leaned on his 19-year-old competitor to get the job done in the game on Sunday afternoon instead.

That may set a precedent moving forward for Rashford’s future in the Manchester United team, and it will be interesting to see how Rangnick selects his attacking line in the remaining months of the season, with the side still in with the chance of competing for the Champions League and FA Cup trophies this season.
