Celtic: Hoops source shares Howe twist

Celtic are still yet to announce a deal for Eddie Howe as their next manager, despite reports claiming he verbally agreed on a move to Glasgow last week.

And now, according to a report from Football Insider, the Hoops are fearing the 43-year-old is having second thoughts over a move to Parkhead.

Howe put off by Celtic pressure?

They have been informed by a Celtic source that Howe has received a ‘wonderful’ offer from the club, however, they have concerns he may be having second thoughts about the vacant post.

One reason mentioned is the demands of winning every game in Scotland, with Howe not used to that pressure during his previous stints at Bournemouth and Burnley.

Transfer Tavern take

Even though Football Insider are sharing the club’s fears over Howe’s stance on a move, we aren’t as concerned over a proposed deal falling through.

The Sun have suggested that both parties are reluctant to rush negotiations, which, in our view, is the right decision.

A potential start date, along with certain assurances may still need to be agreed between both Howe and Celtic, so as long as the two parties are on the same page throughout, we’re confident a move will still be finalised.

Spurs eye Aurier upgrade in Emerson

Tottenham Hotspur could reignite their interest in Emerson this summer, according to reports…

What’s the word?

That’s the word from Mundo Deportivo this weekend as it’s claimed Jose Mourinho has reminded the Spurs hierarchy that he wants a new right-back like the Real Betis man.

The north Londoners pursued the 22-year-old, who is co-owned by Barcelona, back in July 2020 but could not complete a deal due to financial consequences of the global pandemic.

Instead, Spurs signed Matt Doherty from Wolves for £15m and things have not gone to plan whatsoever.

They’ll also face more competition this time around with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan all keen on securing the defender this summer.

Instant upgrade

Mourinho could well be handed an immediate upgrade in the right-back position should Daniel Levy and the club’s hierarchy manage to secure the Betis star ahead of next season.

As of right now, he’s due to become a Barcelona player in the summer and complete his pre-season under Ronald Koeman but that could change if the Catalan giants look to cash in on him, considering they already have Sergino Dest, signed in the summer from Ajax, Sergi Roberto and out-on-loan Moussa Wague in the role already.

On the other hand, all of Spurs’ right-sided options have struggled immensely.

Doherty, brought in as a supposed more stable option to Aurier, has been usurped by the Ivorian and at times, Mourinho has lost trust in the pair of them and turned to young academy graduate Japhet Tanganga.

[snack-amp-story url=https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-and-recent-gossip” title=”Read this week’s Spurs news, latest transfer rumours and more!]

ESPN believe the Irishman could be put up for sale this summer if his form does not improve, something that seems unlikely with him currently out injured, whilst French newspaper La Parisien believe PSG could seek a return for Aurier.

Spurs should absolutely sell if they do come forward with an offer, too. In their recent 3-1 defeat to Manchester United, Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane launched a scathing attack, claiming he’s a “car crash” and a “huge problem for Spurs.”

Emerson could solve this issue as he’s been one of Betis’ star performers (7.04) this campaign.

In fact, only Nabil Fekir (7.14) has managed a better average WhoScored rating and similarly, only two other players have managed to contribute more assists than the Brazilian (four).

Both Doherty and Aurier have combined for three themselves, so Emerson would certainly add a new attacking dimension to that right wing.

In addition to his creative exploits, he’s proven to be a rock-solid defensive option too, averaging a squad-high 2.8 tackles per game, and he’s not too far behind for interceptions (1.9) and clearances (2.4) either – proving to be able to read the game to a high level.

Overall, he’s made 74 tackles at a success rate of 74% which again in comparison to the Spurs duo, is mighty impressive as they have combined for 66 between them

Drawing inspiration from the likes of Dani Alves and Cafu, the 22-year-old dynamo would be the perfect signing to finally kiss goodbye to Aurier and upgrade one of Mourinho’s most troublesome positions.

Levy must pay whatever it takes to land the £26m-rated right-back this summer.

West Ham eye Lukasz Skorupski transfer

David Moyes should urge West Ham United to launch a summer swoop to sign Bologna FC 1909 goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski.

What’s the word?

According to TuttoBolognaWeb, several Premier League sides are monitoring Skorupski’s situation at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara after his impressive run of form in the Serie A.

The 29-year-old Poland international has kept four clean sheets in 18 Italian top-flight outings this season, as Sinisa Mihajlovic’s side strive to secure a mid-table finish.

Skorupski has been Mihajlovic’s number one between the sticks whenever fit this term, having only sat out seven fixtures throughout the 2020/21 campaign as a result of a fractured hand sustained in December.

West Ham are thought to be the keenest side considering pursuing a deal for the four-cap shot-stopper, likely as a result of his compatriot, Lukasz Fabianski, currently being set to leave the London Stadium as a free agent in the summer.

Crystal Palace, Brighton and Hove Albion, Wolverhampton Wanderers plus Aston Villa are also in the running, should they look to cause a shake-up in goal during the off-season.

Fabianski revealed in December that he had been in discussions with the Irons hierarchy over a new, long-term deal, but he is yet to put pen to paper despite entering the final three months of his current £65,000-per-week terms.

The Hammers have also been linked with potential replacements in Manchester United outcast Dean Henderson, who would command a £40m asking rice, and Sheffield United’s number one Aaron Ramsdale, who intends to remain at Bramall Lane regardless of what division the Blades are playing in next season.

Should West Ham sign Skorupski?

While Fabianski is still capable of pulling off remarkable and sometimes unbelievable saves, it would appear that West Ham are testing the waters to see if a suitable replacement can be found in the summer transfer market for the goalkeeper who turns 36 in April.

Skorupski would be a much more lowbrow signing than a Henderson, who earns £100k-p/w at Old Trafford, or Ramsdale, who is being eyed for a senior England call-up, but the Bologna favourite is one of the best-performing shot-stoppers in the Serie A this season.

The £3.5m-rated ‘keeper averages the second-most saves per game (4.06) in the Italian top-flight to Cagliari Calcio’s Alessio Cragno (4.08), along with the second-most from shots faced inside the penalty area (2.72) by players who have featured at least five times, per SofaScore.

Skorupski has also only been beaten by three of 26 shots faced from attempts taken outside of the box, while Fabianski averages 2.88 saves per Premier League game and has conceded from five of 34 shots struck outside the area.

Skorupski has also appeared to turn his reputation around in Italy, having been described as being “very arrogant” by Empoli FC President Fabrizio Corsi after a loan spell at the Carlo Castellani Stadium before sealing a €9m (£8m) move to Bologna from parent side AS Roma in 2018.

Now, the Poland ‘keeper leaves no stone unturned in his pursuit of helping I Rossoblu secure points and does not put himself above the team, as shown by his comments a few weeks ago.

“We are working on penalties, watching videos of our opponents and I waited to the end. Fortunately, I went the way he took it and saved the spot-kick,” Skorupski told Sky Sport Italia, via quotes by Football-Italia, after beating SS Lazio 2-0 in February.

“I made a couple of good saves in the second half too, but the whole team did really well and earned these three precious points.”

If Moyes is looking for a suitable Fabianski replacement and if he is keen to operate on a strict budget – ruling out moves for Henderson et al. – then he should urge West Ham to launch a swoop on Bologna for Skorupski.

Celtic: Lennon must axe Christie vs Motherwell

Celtic returned to form in midweek by reminding supporters of their credentials.

Neil Lennon’s side battered Kilmarnock 4-0 but there was one disappointing aspect.

On the chalkboard

Ryan Christie had a vibrant opening 15 minutes against Killie but beyond that, his impact on the game was minimal. As has been the case in his last seven matches, he failed to provide a goal or register a single assist.

It has been a torrid time for the winger who since being linked with the likes of Arsenal and Leeds, has desperately dropped off in terms of his performances.

He has netted just once in his previous 19 outings and even Lennon is beginning to grow tired of his abject displays.

He started on the bench against both Hamilton and St Mirren but returned to the starting line-up on Tuesday night.

Though, Christie was poor once more and was described as “non-existent” by Frank McAvennie in the following days.

It’s hard to argue with that point either. He completed just a solitary key pass which in a 4-0 rout, is pretty underwhelming. The Scotland international failed to attempt a single dribble and completed only 77% of his passes.

McAvennie added: “He is such an amazing player but if somebody touches him he falls down. Just take a tackle, stay on your feet. It is not going to damage you.”

If anything summed up Christie, it would be that assessment.

On his day, he has a wand of a left foot. His goal in the Scottish Cup final can testify for that. Though, when he’s poor, there is little helping him. Christie’s form has dropped off meteorically and when the Bhoys play Motherwell on Saturday, he must be back on the bench.

The man to prosper from the £8k-per-week winger’s omission could be Mo Elyounoussi. The Norwegian was among the subs in midweek but simply has to come back into the fray.

After all, he is Celtic’s second top scorer this term on 13 goals. Elyounoussi has fewer assists than Christie but the latter has only created one goal for his teammates in his last ten appearances.

Lennon certainly has his favourites at Parkhead and Christie is one of them. However, if he wants to stay in the job, he must get ruthless with his team selection.

AND in other news, Celtic could fix a big problem by hiring manager who left Rodgers “really impressed”…

Liverpool: Pearce claim has fans shook

Lots of Liverpool fans have been reacting to a post from Reds news Twitter account @AnfieldWatch which shares a claim from The Athletic’s Liverpool reporter James Pearce. He revealed a potentially ‘catastrophic’ consequence for the Merseyside club, should they finish the 2020/21 campaign outside of the UEFA Champions League qualification spots.

This comes after Liverpool suffered a 4-1 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday, which leaves them sitting in fourth place on the Premier League table, 10 points behind the league leaders, City, who have played one game less than the Reds at present, and just one point ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea.

In an article that Pearce wrote for The Athletic following that game, he stated that finishing outside of the top four would be ‘catastrophic’ for the Merseyside club, explaining that their summer transfer plans would need to be ‘drastically reassessed’ in that event.

So, how have these Liverpool fans been reacting?

After Pearce’s claim was shared by @AnfieldWatch on Twitter, lots of Reds fans replied to their post to share some concern.

Sunderland can discover Lee Johnson’s new Tammy Abraham in Everton striker Ellis Simms

Sunderland’s transfer window could make or break their promotion bid.

Down the years we’ve seen their business in this part of the season hinder more than help their chances. Thus, it’s crucial that Kristjaan Speakman gets things spot on.

What’s the word?

Just who Sunderland decide to target in January will be interesting. After all, in 2019 they signed Will Grigg for £4m, someone who has become one of their biggest flops in recent times – scoring just eight goals in nearly two years.

Furthermore, their additions in January this year were hardly very helpful. The likes of Antoine Semenyo and Kyle Lafferty barely played for instance.

This time, though, it looks as though they’ll favour the loan market in order to get around the EFL’s salary cap. Providing he completes a takeover, prospective buyer William Storey has insisted that Sunderland’s plan will be to exploit Premier League U23 sides.

As such, The Sunderland Echo have speculated that prolific Everton youngster Ellis Simms could be on the Mackems’ radar.

They explained that a loan move would be the next logical step in his progression and considering Sunderland need a player of his type, he could be someone they target.

The next Abraham

When we reflect upon Johnson’s time at Bristol City, there is one very specific player that comes to mind – Tammy Abraham.

Now a Chelsea regular and England international, it was under Johnson at the Robins that he first flourished, scoring 26 goals in only 48 games under the current Sunderland boss.

He was a loan signing for Bristol City and in Simms, Johnson could discover someone capable of making a similar impact at the Stadium of Light.

But why is that? Well, for starters, the 19-year-old is tall and furthermore, he’s a powerful striker with pace to burn.

Johnson has already admitted that he wants someone capable of stretching the play and consequently, Simms would be their perfect man.

He is natural goal scorer who according to Everton U23 assistant John Ebbrell is outstanding in one-on-one situations: “From experience, I know if you have time to think for that finish it can be difficult but Ellis is really calm and composed in those situations. He very rarely misses,” he said.

To provide further evidence of Simms’ qualities, he has scored eight goals in just 11 Premier League 2 outings this season. That follows a record of 41 strikes in 44 games for the U18s throughout his career.

Although he’s rarely had a taste of senior action, he knows where the net is and would add a great deal to Johnson’s side.

AND in other news, Sunderland can fix Johnson’s big issue with swoop for “really lively” beast compared to Andy Cole…

Rangers: Fans baffled by club-branded kilt

Glasgow Rangers fans are far from happy with the latest accessory from the club – a Gers-branded kilt.

As is the case with any club, the Ibrox outfit have released a whole host of products recently in an attempt to bring in more revenue to the club. Their partnership with Castore has seen the Liverpool-based company release a number of clothing options. One particular hoodie had a retail price of £170 – that did not go down well with the Rangers fans.

The tartan design on this latest release was decided after over 10,000 MyGers members voted, and was revealed by the club’s official account on Twitter. However, whilst many clearly liked it, there are plenty of others who were not happy – some made it clear they preferred the previous offering.

In a bid to share their discontent, the fans took to the social media platform to show their thoughts.

Let’s see what the Rangers fans had to say about the kilt below
