Opener Aftab Alam anchored Habib Bank Limited’s chase of 235 on the final day with a patient century, amid support from captain Hasan Raza and Fahad Masood, to set up their first title win since 1977-78. Pakistan International Airlines required seven wickets on the final day but Alam’s determined innings helped tilt the scales from a precarious 56 for 3 on the third day to inflict on the opposition their first defeat in the competition in a game that mattered the most.Alam and Masood, the two overnight batsmen, consolidated the advantage their team had enjoyed at stumps the previous day, working the ball around comfortably for singles and finding the occasional boundary. In the morning session, Alam collected fours through fine leg, and then drove Shoaib Malik to the deep-cover fence. Masood was less fluent, but the steady flow of ones and twos thwarted PIA’s hopes of putting HBL’s batsmen under pressure. Their only hope was to pick up wickets, and urgently given HBL were progressing smoothly. They got a lucky break when Masood, aiming for a single to mid-off, was caught short of his crease by a direct hit that made it 146 for 4. The elation, though, was short lived. The scoring rate actually picked up with the arrival of Raza to the crease, and Alam continued to be ruthless when an opportunity was on offer. Raza kicked off his innings in streaky fashion, with an edge to the third-man boundary, but got into his groove soon after, punching Anwar Ali through the covers. Alam eventually ceded floor to Raza, giving him most of the strike and reaching his fifth first-class century in the process. He had batted in the middle order in the first innings and his promotion to the top in the second proved decisive.Raza, meanwhile, stepped up by targeting the seamer Aizaz Cheema, striking him for two fours and then tore into him with victory in sight, reaching his half-century with three boundaries in four balls. Though Alam had been dismissed by then, Raza’s attack hastened PIA’s downfall. Kamran Hussain finished the game off in the 79th over, driving Kamran Sajid to score the winning runs. The day-night game was an unprecedented event in Pakistan first-class cricket and was not without controversy. The match was hotly-contested with lots of chatter between the players and even accusations of ball-tampering; the trigger for the uneasy atmosphere on the field, though, appeared to have been poor umpiring for a major part of the game.

Rangers: Lancelot Pollard targeted

Rangers, and by extension their sporting director Ross Wilson, are preparing to make a six-figure bid for Aberdeen starlet Lancelot Pollard, according to The Scottish Daily Express.

The lowdown

Pollard, a 15-year-old attacker, has worked his way up through the youth ranks with the Dons, even featuring for their under-18 side.

Having won the club’s Young Talent of Month award in October, he’s regarded as one of the leading talents in their academy.

Rangers are planning for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s first summer transfer window at the helm after he took over from Steven Gerrard in the autumn.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-3/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The latest

Reliable reporter Scott Burns, a long-serving journalist for The Scottish Express, says that Rangers are ready to submit a six-figure offer for Pollard to win the race for his signature.

They know that there’s ‘big interest’ in the player and therefore feel pressure to get the deal over the line.

Liverpool are actively pursuing Pollard, while Manchester United have been monitoring him too.

The verdict

The fact that six-figure fees are on the table for a player so young speaks to his potential, as does the interest of three heavyweights.

Pollard is seemingly levels above the other players in his age bracket, hence Aberdeen’s decision to fast-track him.

If Liverpool were to match Rangers’ offer, then it could come down to which club can offer the player the clearest long-term path to first-team football.

While he’s unlikely to be in the senior picture for a good while yet, it’s definitely a name worth remembering.

Celtic: Ange drops teasing Turnbull update

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has dropped a teasing injury update concerning the return of midfielder David Turnbull.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by the Daily Record, the 56-year-old Bhoys manager revealed that the 22-year-old, who has not featured for the Hoops since the 3-1 Scottish League Cup final victory over Hibernian back in December, is finally close to recovering from his hamstring injury – with the Scotland international expected to rejoin first-team training in the not too distant future.

Speaking about the current condition of Turnbull, Postecoglou said: “Turnbull is almost back training.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how important a part of Postecoglou’s side Turnbull had proven to be earlier this season, the news that the 22-year-old is finally close to making a return to first-team action is sure to have left the Parkhead faithful buzzing.

Indeed, over his 18 Premiership appearances in the current campaign, the £5.85m-rated attacking midfielder has been in breathtaking form for the Bhoys, scoring five goals, registering four assists and creating seven big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of 4.1 key passes – the most of any player in the league – and taking 3.7 shots – the second-most in the division – per game.

These returns have seen the £14k-per-week Scotsman average an almost unbelievable SofaScore match rating of 7.87, ranking him as the best player in the top flight of Scottish football.

As such, while Celtic have been on an incredibly impressive run of form without the former Motherwell midfield maestro – remaining undefeated in their last 21 league fixtures, only three of which have been draws – it is clear for all to see that the return of Turnbull will undoubtedly provide the Hoops’ hopes of going on to reclaim their Premiership crown with a major boost.

Gayle not discarded as captain, say Jamaica

The Jamaica Cricket Association has backed its decision to nominate Tamar Lambert as captain for the forthcoming Caribbean T20 instead of Chris Gayle, who leads West Indies. They have also denied suggestions that Gayle was discarded as captain and said that Lambert was a logical choice as he has played regularly for Jamaica over the last few seasons, as opposed to Gayle, who has been busy with international commitments.”Chris has not played a lot of games for Jamaica over the last couple of years and with Tamar being around the players for an extended period, it stands to reason they (selectors) may have wanted to keep Tamar for continuity. Tamar is more familiar with the guys,” Jamaica’s cricket operations manager, Courtney Francis, told . “[It’s best to] have Chris just come in and do what he does best, hit away the ball and win matches for us.”Lambert had the credentials to back his case, having led Jamaica to a hat-trick of titles in the four-day competitions in the last few seasons.”I cannot speak with any great authority on why the selectors found favour with Tamar,” Francis said. “I don’t know if it has to do with his record or with continuity as it speaks to the Jamaica line-up. Though Chris is here, [it may be a situation of] giving Chris a little rest from the stress of just captaining in a West Indies series.”Maybe this would just allow Chris to concentrate on his batting only and give us some mammoth performances which we know he’s capable of.”Gayle is coming off a difficult home series against South Africa, in which West Indies lost all but one match, the drawn second Test at St Kitts.

Wolves could save millions with Cundle

Wolves were fairly active behind the scenes making deals during the recent January transfer window with Chiquinho making the move from Estoril, Hwang Hee-chan having his loan deal made permanent as well as seeing Hayao Kawabe and Sang-bin Jeong join and then loaned out.

The Midlands club also saw some of their current players head out on other loan deals, most notably with Adama Traore jetting off back to Barcelona.

While journalist Tim Spiers recently claimed that he’s expecting a busy one in terms of transfer deals, with a “dynamic midfielder” apparently being on their agenda for a while, Bruno Lage could already have his ideal midfield option for next season and beyond.

On the chalkboard

As a product of Wolves’ youth system, 19-year-old midfielder Luke Cundle has racked up a total of 84 appearances across the club’s U18 and U23 sides, scoring eight goals and providing 12 assists along the way, highlighting the attacking ability he has.

Even though he’s got four first-team appearances under his belt, the teenager, who has been praised in the past for his “outstanding” football brain by James Collins, only has 16 minutes of senior action under his belt, showing that he’s on the fringes of Lage’s team but not close to being a regular player for Wolves yet.

Looking ahead to next season, with Joao Moutinho’s contract expiring at the end of the current campaign, there’s every chance that he could be leaving Molineux, as well as Ruben Neves, who has been heavily linked with a transfer away from the club in recent weeks and months.

With that in mind, if either of those two were to leave in the summer, it could pave the way for Cundle to finally take his place in the team and potentially save the club millions in potential transfer fees to sign a replacement.

Additionally, with Leander Dendoncker only starting nine league games in the Premier League this season and his contract set to expire in the summer of 2023, his future at Molineux could also come under some speculation in the coming months.

As a result, Lage should try and give the youngster as many minutes in the Premier League as possible from now until the end of the term to get him acclimatised to the speed and physicality of the division and then look to make him a more prominent figure in the team next season.

Villa fans react to Philogene-Bidace loan

A number of Aston Villa supporters have been giving their thoughts on Jaden Philogene-Bidace’s loan move to Stoke City via social media.

The 19-year-old, who can play on either wing, officially completed a temporary move to Michael O’Neill’s side on Friday and made his debut from the bench in a 3-2 defeat to Fulham 24 hours later.

Philogene-Bidace has made four Villa appearances this season, one of which came under Steven Gerrard against Manchester United in the FA Cup earlier this month. However, he will now spend the remainder of the 2021/22 campaign in the Championship, looking to gain regular first-team action in order to catch Gerrard’s eye.

The 41-year-old has already brought back defender Kaine Kesler Hayden from his impressive loan spell with Swindon Town, so Philogene-Bidace now has a chance to stake his claim with the Potters and, in the longer run, to his parent club.

Villa fans react

Villa shared the news of the loan move on their official Twitter channel. Here is what these fans had to say in reply, with one left ‘confused’ due to O’Neill’s 3-5-2 formation where wing-backs rather than conventional attacking wingers are preferred.

Everton linked with Max Aarons move

Having conceded 29 goals in 17 Premier League games so far this season, it’s safe to say that Everton could do with adding some defensive reinforcements to their squad sooner rather than later.

The upcoming January transfer window could well provide the Merseyside club with the best opportunity to do just that so they can try to improve their form in the second half of the campaign.

In a recent Everton-themed transfer mailbag report from The Athletic, Toffees journalist Greg O’Keefe was discussing the possibility of the club making a move to sign Norwich City right-back Max Aarons, with whom the Blues have been linked in the past, during the upcoming window.

He said: “With plenty of room to improve in age terms, he might be a good addition but it remains to be seen whether Everton will be able to spend another fee similar to what they’ve agreed for [Vitaliy] Mykolenko.”

Having signed Ben Godfrey from Norwich last year in a deal worth a reported £20m, with him going on to cement himself in the team by making 51 appearances across all competitions, the club now has the chance to replicate this sort of deal, this time with Aarons as a young defender from Norwich who has the capacity to make a long-term impact at Everton.

Having been praised in the past by Jon Newsome for delivering some “outstanding” performances for the Canaries, the 21-year-old could potentially one day become a long-term replacement for Everton’s 33-year-old captain Seamus Coleman at right-back given the age gap between the two players.

In terms of a potential move to Everton in January, it would be hard to see Norwich being particularly willing to let Aarons leave halfway through the season as they are trying to avoid relegation. Indeed, the £19.8m-rated youngster has played more minutes than anyone else at Carrow Road in the Premier League this season, showing how important he is to Dean Smith’s side.

Either way, Everton should definitely explore the possibility of trying to secure a deal with Norwich for Aarons in January. If the Canaries aren’t willing to let him go next month, the Toffees could wait until the summer to see if the situation would be any different.
