Spurs: Conte makes Skriniar his priority

Antonio Conte is reportedly eyeing a major defensive upgrade at Tottenham Hotspur this winter transfer window…

What’s the word?

According to Italian newspaper Corriere Dello Sport (via Sport Witness), the Spurs boss has two main priorities in January as he presses to sign Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic and Inter Milan centre-back Milan Skriniar.

The Slovakia international has long been a target for the north London outfit, even before Conte was appointed last month. In fact, a move for the 26-year-old failed to materialise back in the summer of 2020.

It remains to be seen exactly how much Skriniar would command next month, though CIES Football Observatory currently value him at €40m (£36m).

Colossal centre-back upgrade

By launching a bid for his former Inter colossus, Conte could finally axe one of Spurs’ most inconsistent performers in Davinson Sanchez.

The Colombian, who cost a one-time club-record £42m from Ajax in 2017, has struggled to cement a place in the starting XI for several seasons now and you could argue that he’s only broke in now due to Cristian Romero’s injury.

Yet still, he’s only started seven league games this term and was part of last season’s leaky and error-prone backline under Jose Mourinho, where he started 17 times.

Often dubbed a “liability” to the side, Sanchez could be shifted aside should Spurs manage to secure a move for Skriniar.

Under Conte, he ranked as Inter’s sixth-best performer and second-most used centre-back on their way to their first Scudetto in over a decade. He clearly played a major role in the side having the best defensive record in the Serie A, too.

Across the course of his career, Skriniar has averaged 3.6 clearances, 1.6 tackles and a phenomenal 91.3% passing accuracy for both club and country, via WhoScored. That would suggest that he’s not only a defensive animal but one that is equally adept with the ball at his feet. It’s no wonder he thrived under Conte.

Italian football expert David Amoyal once dubbed him an “absolute beast” and it’s easy to see why, on the above evidence.

Spurs must allow Conte his wish to sign Skriniar this winter. In doing so, they could finally get rid of Sanchez, who just isn’t consistent enough to be a regular starter.

Ronaldo considering early Man Utd exit

Manchester United have been subjected to a lot of unwanted attention this week, as it has been heavily speculated that up to 17 players want to leave the club, and there is one man in particular rumoured to want out at Old Trafford who could cause big problems for interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

What’s the word?

The Daily Star is reporting that Cristiano Ronaldo is considering his future at the club following the appointment of Rangnick and could even potentially cut short his 18-month move back to Manchester.

Ronaldo has a contract with the club until 2023, but this report suggests that the superstar could leave the club in the summer if the recruitment of a new manager after the German’s interim period this summer isn’t the right one for him.

It would reportedly put huge pressure on both Rangnick and newly-appointed chief executive officer Richard Arnold, who will need to make sure that the right decision is met regarding the identity of the next permanent manager at Old Trafford.

The £31.5m-rated forward, who was hailed a “real icon” by team-mate Jesse Lingard, was last year reunited with the club which gave him his worldwide platform after United swooped in for the player when he was rumoured to be linked with a move to Manchester City.

Fans will be fuming

Despite a glittering career which has seen the Portugal captain become the second-highest scoring player in the history of football, it’s safe to say that settling back into United is a challenge for him, especially with the high standards that he holds on himself and the team around him.

Ronaldo has scored 14 goals and bagged three assists so far this season, which isn’t bad at all. He is currently the joint-fourth highest scorer in the Premier League with eight goals and is United’s top scorer this season in all competitions by a stretch, with Bruno Fernandes and Mason Greenwood trailing well behind him in joint-second place on five goals each.

Fans will surely be furious if the rumours are true that there is going to be a potential early exit for one of their club legends, especially when he is having the most influential output in the team so far this season, and there will surely be an expectation to keep the best player in the squad happy to avoid further upset and poor performances.

The problems at United are only escalating further after a disappointing result at Old Trafford on Monday with a home defeat to Wolves and now the rumoured upset in the dressing room amongst many players. Therefore, Rangnick will surely want to send a message of resilience to the media and fans with a good performance and a result in their FA Cup game against Aston Villa on Monday night, as the current situation threatens to turn into a nightmare for him.

Antonio Conte dealt major Spurs injury blow

Antonio Conte has been dealt a further injury setback ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s clash with NS Mura in the Europa Conference League this evening…

What’s the latest?

The Italian will be without three players after delivering a fresh update to reporters during his pre-game press conference over in Slovenia.

“[Dane] Scarlett in this moment is not available. During the international break he had a problem in his ankle and is not available. He’s injured in the same way like Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso,” he revealed (via football.london).

But to make matters worse, it appears the injury to the Atalanta loanee is a lot worse than first feared, handing the 52-year-old a crushing long-term blow.

On Romero’s absence, he then added: “We are waiting for another scan. I think his injury is a bit serious and we have to wait. It’s an injury that is more serious that Lo Celso and Scarlett.”

So not only will Conte be without Romero for the foreseeable future but he is also without two players that would’ve most likely earned some minutes on the pitch in an encounter like this one in young striker Dane Scarlett and attacking midfielder. Lo Celso.

Devastating setback

This update will surely leave the Spurs boss absolutely gutted, if not slightly annoyed and frustrated by the international break because three members of his first-team squad are now on the treatment table.

And one of his key starters in Romero is now facing a serious stint out.

Indeed, the Argentina international started both of Conte’s first two games in charge, making 12 starts across all competitions this term but now the manager is going to be light on options in defence – a big worry because of his three-at-the-back system.

The fact that Conte believes it is ‘more serious’ is a huge cause for concern right now.

Meanwhile, Lo Celso has found it hard to pick up regular minutes for the club this campaign but has featured regularly in Europe, starting four times when fit. He would have certainly been in line to lessen the burden on some of the usual starters, who will be feeling the effects of Conte’s fitness work in recent weeks.

Similarly, Scarlett is really the only alternative to Harry Kane upfront, so the England talisman may no longer be able to be rested with the teenager out injured, thus for all of the reasons mentioned above, it makes it a very frustrating and significant blow to Conte ahead of kick-off.

He’ll need to be a little wary with team selection as his side face a tough trip to Burnley on Sunday afternoon but with three players missing, that task isn’t going to be an easy one.

Leeds: Agbonlahor thinks Bielsa could walk

Pundit Gabby Agbonlahor believes Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa may walk out at Elland Road, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Elland Road source

Football Insider provided an update on the 66-year-old’s future earlier this month. They were informed by an Elland Road source that there is a ‘growing expectation’ among the Leeds hierarchy that Bielsa won’t return to take charge of a fifth campaign.

Leeds have won just three of their 15 Premier League games this season and currently sit six points above the relegation zone.

Bielsa’s future is thought to be up in the air with Victor Orta compiling a shortlist of possible new managers.

The Latest: Agbonlahor’s comments

Agbonlahor, who regularly features on talkSPORT, was talking to Football Insider about that source’s claim.

He was asked if he thinks this could be the end for the Argentine, who he called ‘outstanding’, to which he said:

“That is a tough one, they will look at the end of the season.

“If Leeds finishes lower than they did last season he might think ‘I’ve taken this team as far as I can. I haven’t been given the investment that other teams have’. He may choose to walk then.

“It’s very tough to predict but if I was Leeds I would be doing everything I can to make him stay because he’s an outstanding manager.

“No other names really jump out at you for Leeds.”

The Verdict: Is the end near?

Leeds fans will, unfortunately, have to realise that Bielsa won’t be around at Elland Road forever.

Should the Whites fall way short of their 59-point tally from last season, then perhaps Bielsa will in fact feel he has taken the club as far as possible and walk out, as Agbonlahor mentions.

Hopefully, though, Bielsa can steer the Whites way clear of any relegation troubles over the coming months and go on to enjoy a solid second half of the season, which could possibly persuade him to have one more year in Yorkshire.

Joel Ward was poor against Leeds United

Crystal Palace slumped to their second consecutive defeat after Raphinha snatched all three points for Leeds United with an injury-time penalty in their Premier League clash at Elland Road.

The Eagles were looking to bounce back from their disappointing result against Aston Villa over the weekend and looked to be heading home with a point until referee Kevin Friend pointed to the spot in the 91st minute.

Summer signing Marc Guehi was adjudged to have handled the ball following an in-swinging corner, with the decision confirmed after the Video Assistant Referee advised Friend to go to the pitch-side monitor.

The result perhaps wasn’t a fair reflection of the game, though, with Palace having the better opportunities to win the closely fought encounter.

Substitute Christian Benteke had two golden opportunities to put the visitors ahead after Wilfried Zaha clipped a delightful ball to the back post before the Belgium international headed wide, and Illan Meslier just about kept out his effort after connecting with a long ball upfield.

However, the capital club’s backline looked suspect throughout the 90 minutes, not just when Guehi gifted Leeds a golden opportunity to claim their fourth top-flight victory of the campaign.

Experienced right-back Joel Ward struggled to cope with the pace of Dan James following the break, with the former Manchester United youngster playing two key passes and creating one big chance.

As per SofaScore, the 32-year-old was awarded a match rating of just 6.5 out of 10, the second-lowest total received by any of his teammates who featured from the off on Tuesday night, letting Vieira down as a result.

And when looking at his underlying numbers, it’s easy to understand why. Ward achieved a measly passing accuracy of 61%, won just 50% of his duels and had only 39 touches, one fewer than goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.

These figures highlight his underwhelming display, and Football.London reporter Mark Wyatt was equally disappointing with his sub-par showing.

“Solid outing in the first 45 minutes from Ward other than being booked, which means he’ll miss the next game against Manchester United. Less influential in the second period as Dan James got the beating of him on a couple of occasions,” wrote Wyatt after awarding him a lowly 5 out of 10.

With winnable fixtures against Everton, Southampton and Watford on the horizon for Palace, Vieira will be hoping one of his most experienced and reliable campaigners can get back to his best as soon as possible.

Rangers urged to sign Billy Gilmour

Kris Commons has made a bold Rangers transfer claim regarding a move they should make in the next window.

What’s the talk?

The former Scotland international has urged the club to pick up the phone and enquire about a potential deal to sign Billy Gilmour, who they targeted in the summer, from Chelsea in January.

Commons has claimed that the 20-year-old could be a great replacement for Steven Davis, with his loan spell at Norwich currently under scrutiny due to his last league start coming on 18 September.

He wrote in the Daily Mail, via Daily Record: “If Gilmour is still twiddling his thumbs in January, Rangers should get on the phone to Chelsea and at least ask the question.

“Some people might think it would be a backward step to return to his old club. But Rangers are a different animal now compared to when Gilmour left in 2017.

“I’m a big fan of Steven Davis and he’s been brilliant for Rangers. But I would have Gilmour ahead of him all day.”

Imagine him & Aribo

Ross Wilson could land a dream Rangers midfield by bringing Gilmour back to the club. As Commons said, he could replace Davis and start in midfield alongside Joe Aribo and Glen Kamara.

Whilst Kamara provides the metronomic passing and ability to keep the play ticking over, Aribo and Gilmour could be the sources of the real action. They could form a fantastic partnership as the Chelsea man has the energy, work-rate and tenacity to buzz around the pitch and put out fires, winning the ball back and retaining possession, whilst the former Charlton wizard can use his ability to create chances going forward.

Aribo has scored two goals and created 1.9 chances per game in the Premiership for Rangers this season, averaging an excellent SofaScore rating of 7.04. Gilmour, meanwhile, has managed 3.6 tackles and interceptions per game for Norwich in the Premier League, winning 59% of his duels and completing 87% of his passes.

Upon being linked with him last year, Gers boss Steven Gerrard made his feelings on Gilmour clear as he said: “I think he’s pretty settled at Chelsea. Fabulous little player but there’s been no contact.”

This suggests that Gerrard would love to have the Scotland international at Ibrox. Should there be an opportunity to bring him in if Chelsea cut short his loan deal with Norwich, Wilson must then pounce and allow Rangers to use him and Aribo as an exciting pairing in midfield. The mixture of defensive ballast and energy along with creativity and drive could be an exciting one for fans to watch.
