Dortmund highlight one problem Liverpool failed to address this summer

Having come onto the pitch against FC Cologne on Sunday with his side already 4-0 up, it’s no surprise that Christian Pulisic had little impact on Borussia Dortmund’s result this weekend.

The American teenager has been one of the revelations of European football in the last few seasons, having burst onto the scene and played a starring role for one of the most exciting young sides on the continent, even if his stats at the weekend were nothing to write home about: in 25 minutes of football he had just 14 touches of the ball, failing to even attempt any dribbles.

But that shouldn’t be taken as criticism – not in a game which was already wrapped up long before he was even told to warm up. Instead, this season, the American’s continued form should still be considered a kick in the teeth to a Liverpool side who have shown interest in the winger over the last few years, and who struggled to score against Burnley this weekend, succumbing to a 1-1 draw.

The Reds launched an £11million bid in summer 2016 and Pulisic even discussed reports of their interest in him during the last transfer window, with German publication Bild.

There seems to be something of an imbalance present on Merseyside. At Anfield on Saturday, Mohamed Salah showed why he was bought by Jurgen Klopp this summer, but also why the Reds could be doing with another player in the pacey winger mould. Last season, they struggled most in the absence of Sadio Mane, and the signing of Salah was obviously an attempt to redress the balance of the side by adding a similar player to the other side of the attack. But it was also a ploy to allow the team to continue to function without Mane.

This weekend, we saw that in action: the Senegalese star’s red card in the 5-0 defeat to Manchester City last weekend meant he was out of action for the Anfield game. And Salah did step up to the mark, scoring the equalising goal, taking six shots, and completing 100% of his dribbles. It’s clear that, despite the fact that Liverpool will be disappointed not to have won the game, Salah has helped a side who seemed so lost without Mane last season.

Even so, it’s hard to look past the fact that Liverpool – and this probably applies all over the pitch – lack a certain depth. With Mane out of the team, Liverpool may well have lost this game last season. But without the same creative threat on both sides, perhaps that’s also why they didn’t win. It’s because of this that Liverpool’s desire to get a player like Pulisic in their team shouldn’t be extinguished.

Highlighting the Dortmund player this weekend may seem strange and slightly out of place, but it’s got nothing to do with any thoughts that he had a good weekend or was crucial to his team’s victory. Rather it was the mere fact that he was given a rest after the midweek defeat to Tottenham at Wembley that stood out. Here is a player who, at just 19 years of age, is already of such importance to his team that his side have to think about keeping him fresh for the biggest games.

It’s clear that Liverpool are still a work in progress under Jurgen Klopp. And whilst the front three of Mane, Salah and Roberto Firmino will probably bear fruit in the long term, whenever one of the wingers are missing, replacing him with a player like Philippe Coutinho, who is more comfortable with players ahead of him, changes the dynamic up front.

Liverpool need more depth. Failing to sign a centre back is one area of concern, but only managing to bring in one pacey attacking player this summer, excluding youngster Dominic Solanke, is perhaps another. Yes there are players like Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho who can come into the side in similar roles, and maybe even Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is an option if needs must, though the England international didn’t sign on deadline day to play as a winger.

But you get the feeling that resting important players after a big European game, just like his former side Dortmund did this weekend, isn’t really an option for Jurgen Klopp. You wonder if that will be an issue for the club as the season wears on.

HYS: Which former stars should Tottenham re-sign?

They say you should never go back in football, but there are some exceptions to the rule. Paul Pogba’s second stint at Manchester United is inevitably going better than his first, whilst Didier Drogba’s cameo return to Chelsea got them over the line during the 2014/15 title race.

Tottenham Hotspur are no strangers to the re-signing game either; Robbie Keane returned to White Hart Lane and continued to produce the goods after six troubled months at Liverpool and Spurs spells acted as bookends for Teddy Sheringham’s Man United career.

With that in mind and the summer transfer window by no means as far away as it may seem, we have a curious question for Lilywhites fans; which former chargers would you like to see return to the club ahead of next season?

Let us know by taking part in the poll below, giving each player a thumbs up or a thumbs down, and we’ll publish the results later this week.

Martinez states why Everton should not sack him

Under-fire Everton manager Roberto Martinez has stated that the good work he has done at the club over the last three years should contribute to him keeping his job.

The Toffees have had a disappointing campaign in 2015-16, with inconsistency and a poor home record leaving the Merseyside club in mid-table.

The Goodison Park outfit had ambitions of finishing in the top six this season, with the young players at Martinez’s disposal better than their form has suggested of late.

Reports suggest that Martinez could be shown the door soon, with a shortlist of managers compiled to replace him at Everton.

Despite this, the former Wigan boss has been vocal on why he should be given more time by the club to prove himself.

Martinez has stated that the Toffees have progressed under this stewardship.

“I just want to believe, with the work I have done for the last three years, there are signs there that we are getting close to challenging for silverware and where Everton should be,” Martinez is quoted as saying by The Guardian.

“We developed young players, gave them big roles and they reacted, and showed character, flair and drive in the biggest football arena.

“In the first season we had a [club] record number of points in the Premier League and in the second the experience of Europe. We gave young players big roles and have not invested money but managed assets.

“We were very unfairly stopped from being in the League Cup final and that never stopped us wanting to come to Wembley.

“There are signs in the three years I could have earned the opportunity to drive the club forward and I am sure we can fulfil our expectations. I am very much attached to it.”

A late Anthony Martial goal eliminated Everton from the FA Cup semi-finals at the hands of Manchester United on Saturday.

  • Was named in squad for friendly
  • Scored early goal for Gerrard's team
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The free agent has been training at the Saudi Arabian side since September and signed a training contract.

However, he may have boosted his chances of getting a move to the Saudi Pro League club as coach Steven Gerrard named him in the team that will compete in the friendly at Ettifaq Stadium.

Lingard went on to score four minutes into Al-Ettifaq's first match in their new ground as they drew 2-2.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

If Lingard impresses enough to earn a permanent deal, he will be the third Englishman to join Steven Gerrard's team.

Jordan Henderson and Demarai Gray are already at the club, while Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum and ex-Lyon star Moussa Dembele are also among Gerrard's squad.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Lingard has been a free agent since leaving Nottingham Forest at the end of last season.

The former Manchester United star had a trial at West Ham but it was reported that coach David Moyes felt his fitness was not up to the Premier League standard.

The 30-year-old has not featured in a competitive match since he made a two-minute cameo against Manchester United in April. His previous match was against Tottenham in early March.

Arsenal player ratings vs Nottingham Forest: Mikel Arteta gets it horribly wrong as shambolic Gunners go out with a whimper

The Gunners barely laid a hand on Steve Cooper's side as their defeat officially handed the Premier League title to Manchester City

Arsenal's title challenge ended with a whimper as they slumped to a horrible 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening. It was a third defeat in five games for the Gunners, and one that saw Manchester City crowned Premier League champions for a fifth time in six seasons.

Mikel Arteta's side knew they needed a win at the City Ground to at least put some pressure on City ahead of their game against Chelsea on Sunday, but from the moment they fell behind to a Taiwo Awoniyi goal on 19 minutes, they never really looked like coming back.

Arteta bizarrely opted to start with Thomas Partey and Jakub Kiwior as his full-backs, and it was a move that backfired massively, with his side offering no threat from the wide positions and Forest packing the central areas as they comfortably shut the visitors out despite Arsenal having more than 80 percent possession.

Arsenal barely had a sight of goal all evening, with Bukayo Saka's tame effort from a tight angle which was comfortably saved the closest they came all evening to an equaliser.

GOAL rates Arsenal's players from the City Ground…

Aaron Ramsdale (5/10):

Barely had a thing to do all evening. Not at fault for the goal.

Thomas Party (3/10):

Saw a lot of the ball at right-back, but offered very little width or threat.

Ben White (3/10):

Slow in possession. Arsenal missed his overlapping runs out wide.

Gabriel Magalhaes (4/10):

Unlucky with the goal, when his clearance deflected in off Awoniyi, but looked nervy all game.

Jakub Kiwior (2/10):

Barely saw any of the ball at left-back. Should never have started there.

Jorginho (4/10):

Saw plenty of the ball but didn't do much with it. Took too many touches at times.

Granit Xhaka (3/10):

Couldn't get into the game at all, with most of Arsenal's play going down the right.

Martin Odegaard (3/10):

Gave away the ball in the build-up to Forest's goal. Couldn't get into threatening positions.

Bukayo Saka (3/10):

Had one half chance in the second half, aside from that he never really threatened.

Gabriel Jesus (3/10):

Cut a frustrated figure by the end. Looks someway off his best still.

Leandro Trossard (2/10):

Scuffed one decent effort wide before half-time. No real impact.

Eddie Nketiah (4/10):

Didn't get a sniff of a chance.

Kieran Tierney (5/10):

Should have started at left-back. Damage was done by the time he came on. Did at least show some urgency.

Fabio Vieira (3/10):

No impact having come on for the final 20 minutes.

Mikel Arteta (1/10):

Really odd team selection that simply didn't work. Should have changed things at half-time.

Alexis & the Arsenal stars who left to join bigger clubs

The Chilean has joined Manchester United, which makes him the latest in a long line of players to leave north London in search of trophies

Nicolas Anelka to Real Madrid | 1999

Nicolas Anelka followed Arsene Wenger into Arsenal in 1997, signing from Paris Saint-Germain at just 17 years of age. Wenger would use him sparingly during his first season in the Premier League, but an impressive second season and a prolific third saw him gain interest from Real Madrid in 1999.

Anelka made no effort to hide his intentions to leave Arsenal, and indeed England, admitting he had struggled to settle in London, before joining Real in a deal worth around £22 million.

Ashley Cole to Chelsea | 2006

A lot of Arsenal fans have still not forgiven Ashley Cole for the way in which he left the club. A graduate from the Arsenal academy, Cole was tipped to become the club captain having helped the Gunners to three FA Cups and two Premier League titles.

However, after nearly crashing his car in shock at being offered a new contract worth £55,000 per week, he left for London rivals Chelsea and enjoyed even more success. The left-back would win four FA Cups, a Premier League title, a League Cup, the Europa League, and in 2011-12 was part of the Blues side to lift the Champions League trophy.

Emmanuel Adebayor to Manchester City | 2009

Emmanuel Adebayor spent four seasons at Arsenal but failed to win a trophy, though he did pick up a place in the 2007-08 PFA Premier League Team of the Season, having struck 24 league goals in 36 games. Then, upon leaving for Manchester City, Gunners fans turned on the Togo international in a feud which would play out in front of those at the Etihad in 2009.

As well as being accused of stamping on Robin van Persie's face, Adebayor scored against his former club and ran the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the travelling support, much to their anger. Adebayor would also go on to play for Tottenham, Arsenal's north London rivals.

  • Kolo Toure to Manchester City | 2009

Another player to build his reputation at Arsenal, Kolo Toure signed from local club ASEC Mimosas in 2002. The defender would go on to play well over 300 games for the Gunners and was a major part of the club's 2003-04 Premier League title campaign in which the Gunners remained unbeaten.

The trophies would soon disappear at Arsenal, however, and so would Toure, as he moved to Manchester City in 2009. Toure would have to settle for a bit-part role at the Etihad, though did pick up another Premier League winners' medal in 2011-12.

Prolific Hales switches focus to T20s

Whether Alex Hales remains England’s opener for all formats will not be decided until May when the next Test team is selected, but he has given himself every chance of a second crack after his prolific one-day series against South Africa. For now, though, the focus turns to the version of the game where he first grabbed the attention at international level, with two T20s to conclude this tour ahead of the World T20 in India.Hales enters the T20s against South Africa after becoming only the third batsman in history to make five 50+ scores in a five-match ODI series. It took him a little while to crack the code in ODIs – his first half-century came in his 11th innings – but runs had flowed earlier in his T20 career. He struck an unbeaten 62 in his second match against West Indies, in 2011, which was followed by a 99 against the same opposition in 2012.Regular contributions followed – including an unbeaten 80 in Wellington and 94 against Australia in Durham – but it was in Chittagong when the world really took notice as he hammered an undefeated 116 against Sri Lanka, England’s first (and still only) T20 international hundred. His returns in 2015 were a little slim – scores of 27, 3, 8 and 11 in four matches – but he could not wish to be entering the format in better form.”I feel in good enough touch,” he said. “The pitches we play on out here should lead to some high-scoring games so if I get myself in, I hope I can go big.”And Hales believes he is part of a T20 side that has the ability to repeat England’s success at the 2010 World T20 in West Indies where they secured what remains their only piece of global silverware.”It’s definitely the best side I’ve been involved with in Twenty20, with a hell of lot of young ball-strikers and a good bowling attack as well,” he said. “I think it’s a really exciting time with the talent and firepower we have in our squad, people who can hit sixes all the way down to No. 11. I think we’ve got a good chance.”Reflecting on the one-day series which got away from England despite their 2-0 lead, Hales admitted there were some “sloppy” mistakes at times but that it should not make the team change the style of play they have produced since last year’s World Cup.”The way we’ve played in the last year, we’re going to have to take the rough with the smooth. Sometimes, we are going to make sloppy mistakes like we did but I still think we’ve done some pretty good stuff over the last year, and we’ve got to stick to our basics.”If you look at the guys you’ve got in your squad, it’s everyone’s natural game to play that way. Sometimes we are going to make mistakes and people will point fingers – but we’ve still got to stay true to ourselves.”And with T20 the next port of call, there will not be any holding back.

Bowling coach Saker to leave England role

David Saker, the England bowling coach, is to leave his role to become head coach of Melbourne Renegades. He is contracted until the end of September but could leave before the Ashes this summer.Saker, 48, has been part of the most successful era in England’s history but has increasingly come under criticism. Succeeding Otis Gibson in April 2010, Saker was part of the backroom staff that helped England win a first global one-day trophy – the World T20 in 2010 – and a first Ashes series victory in Australia for 24 years. But Saker’s failure to help bring through a new group of fast bowlers, England’s general struggle in one-day cricket, and particularly the Steven Finn fiasco have blotted his record and many anticipated his sacking after the Ashes whitewash last winter. But he remained in place as England disappointed at the 2014 World T20, lost a home Test series to Sri Lanka and last week crashed out of the World Cup.”My first three years in the job for English cricket was a bit of a fairytale,” he told the . “But like most things it’s hard to keep that form up. We lost some senior players, which made it a little bit harder.”He is now keen to return home to Victoria, potentially before the end of his contract in September, and broaden his experience beyond just the bowling brief, with ambitions to take charge of a Sheffield Shield team.”I’m very excited to join the club and come back to Melbourne – which is home – and work with everyone involved,” Saker said. “The Big Bash League is being talked about worldwide in cricket circles and it’s great to be back working in the T20 format.”Renegades’s chief executive, Stuart Coventry, added: “David is the right person to lead the club over the next two years and drive us into winning positions. David has been involved in the high-performance environment at the international level and had great success with England across all formats over the last five years. We’ll now give him time to review our list closely and work out how he wants to mould things in the months ahead.”
