Celtic: Lawwell blamed for latest Howe news

Ex-Celtic player Frank McAvennie has blamed Peter Lawwell for the hold up in hiring Eddie Howe.

Howe has already agreed a deal in principle with Celtic and he has already held a face-to-face meeting with Dermot Desmond, but he has made certain demands to the club before he takes over. There has been a hold up in the appointment and McAvennie has blamed Lawwell’s presence for it.

Lawwell could be Celtic’s ‘stumbling block’

McAvennie was recently talking to Football Insider and he talked about Howe and why the Hoops are yet to appoint the Englishman.

He said: “If Eddie Howe said he’d take the job but they wait until the end of the season to announce it, fine, he’ll be doing the talking now.

“Eddie, he’ll be like Brendan Rodgers and Martin O’Neill, he’ll want to run the club from top to bottom.

“That might be a stumbling block, especially with Peter Lawwell there at the moment because he likes to be hands-on.  It might get easier to negotiate a deal once he’s gone. It depends if a manager can accept that. I don’t think a good manager will work like that. I don’t think it’s right.”

Dominic McKay’s early arrival can help Celtic

While Lawwell is retiring at the end of the current campaign and Celtic are undergoing a transition, next CEO Dominic McKay is about to arrive at Parkhead well before his scheduled arrival.

This should be considered a good sign for Celtic and might be an indication of the fact that they are trying to act early. And if Lawwell’s presence is indeed hindering Howe’s arrival, McKay’s early move will certainly smoothen things out quicker.

Fry claims Hasenhuttl lucky to avoid sack

Peterborough Director of Football Barry Fry has exclusively told Football FanCast that Ralph Hasenhuttl is fortunate to have avoided getting the sack at Southampton.

The Austrian appeared on the verge of losing his job following Southampton’s forgettable 9-0 defeat to Leicester back in October 2019, but ended up turning things around and led the St Mary’s outfit to an impressive 11th-place finish.

Hasenhuttl’s Saints side then started this Premier League season in outstanding form, and topped the table in November after beating Newcastle.

But Southampton have endured a wretched run of form since mid-December, beating only rock-bottom Sheffield United, and although his side are in the FA Cup semi-finals, they’re just seven points above the relegation-zone and suffered another 9-0 defeat at Manchester United back in January, part of a six-match winless run.

And Fry told Football FanCast that Hasenhuttl losing his job still isn’t ruled out.

“In the present day of football I would say yeah, nobody survives that [two 9-0s]. There’s been a lot of talk about him going, but then he had a magnificent run and Southampton are playing superb football.

“He’s had one or two key injuries, but they’re a club Southampton in the Premier League that have got a good team if they pick their best XI. But they haven’t got a big squad and haven’t got strength in depth.

“Can I see them getting rid of him? Possibly.”

Gers fans love Morelos comments

Many Glasgow Rangers fans are absolutely delighted with comments from Alfredo Morelos after the Gers confirmed their status as Premiership champions.

The celebrations are in full flow in Glasgow after the Gers picked up their 55th league title over the weekend. They didn’t even need to do it themselves on Sunday as Celtic’s failure to beat Dundee United was enough to get them over the line. In truth, this has been a formality for weeks, if not months, and there are still six league matches to play this season (BBC).

After the confirmation, the Gers’ media team were working around the clock to speak to as many people associated with this triumph as possible. £10.8m-valued Colombia international Morelos rarely gives interviews, but he spoke after the title was confirmed to share his delight.

These Gers supporters were absolutely delighted to see him speak, and they took to social media to share their thoughts on the 24-year-old’s words after they were shared on the 55-time Scottish champions’ official Twitter account.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the comments from Morelos below

In other news, one talkSPORT pundit says Rangers are just a “stepping stone” for this Gers man.

Here’s why Palace should sign Amavi

According to The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, Crystal Palace target Jordan Amavi seems set for a return to the Premier League.

What’s the word?

It seems Palace are in the market for a new left-back to compete with Tyrick Mitchell after it was revealed that talks between the club and Patrick van Aanholt have stalled, meaning the experienced veteran is likely to leave Selhurst Park in the summer.

Amavi has also reportedly rejected fresh offers of a new contract which has paved the way for potential suitors to eye up a cut-price deal in the January transfer window or wait until the summer when his contract will run out.

Palace are believed to be considering a move for the French defender as they look to provide competition for Mitchell.

Ideal cover and competition

The Frenchman has spent nearly four years at the Ligue 1 outfit having left Aston Villa after initially joining on loan for the entirety of the 2017/18 season.

Amavi is into the final six months of his current deal but could already be on his way out and Palace could be the perfect destination.

The Eagles are struggling to string together a positive run of results in the Premier League at the moment. In their last three games in all competitions alone, they have conceded five goals, including a humiliating 4-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City.

Barring a 2-0 victory over Premier League strugglers Sheffield United, Palace haven’t managed to keep a clean sheet in the top flight since the 1-0 win at home to Southampton at the start of the season, which has become a bit of a concern for Hodgson.

The potential loss of Van Aanholt would leave Hodgson desperately short of options on the left-hand side of the defence. Therefore, Steve Parish needs to prioritise a new fullback this window, and he may not have to look much further than Amavi, whose form has caught the attention of a number of clubs.

In Amavi, Palace may find the perfect replacement for Van Aanholt at Selhurst Park, given the fact he has contributed to the same amount of goals as the Dutchman in Ligue 1 this season.

His attacking contributions are similar to Van Aanholt’s but he makes more tackles (1.2) per match which shows that he possesses a fine positional sense and awareness.

While the £9m-rated ace hasn’t featured prominently in France this season, he is still prepared to put the hard graft in to deny opponents as he currently averages 2.9 interceptions per match, which is more than the 30-year-old (1.2).

Once dubbed a “terrific young player” by former Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood, there’s no doubting the fact that Amavi would make a fine addition to the Palace squad.

AND in other news, Crystal Palace can’t afford to lose Tyrick Mitchell to Arsenal…

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson suffers cruel blow as Gary Cahill ruled out due to injury

Roy Hodgson has confirmed Crystal Palace will be without Gary Cahill as they play host to Premier League strugglers Sheffield United at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon.

What’s the news?

Speaking ahead of this afternoon’s game, he told reporters, via football.london: “Gary Cahill is still suffering from the slight hamstring problem he picked up 10 days or so ago, but apart from that there’s nothing else to report other than long term injuries which have been well documented by now.”

Cahill has not featured since he suffered a knock during the 7-0 drubbing at the hands of champions Liverpool. This isn’t the first time the former Chelsea defender has had to face adversity, as he has battled his fair share of injury problems over the past couple of years and was forced to miss the start of this season due to injury.

Likely impact?

As the 35-year-old centre-back has started all five of his appearances in the Premier League this season – including the 5-1 win away at West Brom – the timing couldn’t be worse for the Eagles manager with games coming thick and fast over the next few weeks and months.

Cahill’s absence plays havoc with Hodgson’s already depleted selection options, as he joins a growing list of casualties that also includes new summer recruit Nathan Ferguson, Connor Wickham, Martin Kelly and Wayne Hennessey.

Hodgson’s side have so far failed to keep a clean sheet since the 1-0 win over Southampton at the start of the season and the Palace boss will be expected to take the opportunity to rotate his squad as he seeks to stop the rot from spreading further.

It seems the centre-back pairing is certainly up for grabs as Hodgson has switched between Cahill, Cheikhou Kouyate, Scott Dann, James Tomkins and to some extent Mamadou Sakho this season so far.

Ever the consummate professional, Cahill has established himself as an integral part of Hodgson’s side during his time at Selhurst Park, making over 30 appearances for Palace across all competitions so far, via Transfermarkt. When he’s fully fit and firing on all cylinders, he should slot into place alongside any one of the aforementioned quartet at the heart of the defence.

After all, the seasoned veteran has seen it all before in the beautiful game, having experienced the highs of the Champions League with Chelsea to the lows of the Football League.

Once hailed as a “fantastic” beast by the Palace boss, in 25 top-flight appearances last season, Cahill averaged a staggering 4.4 clearances per game, via WhoScored.

Therefore, there’s no doubt it’s a bitter blow for Hodgson not to be able to call upon the services of the vice-captain as Palace prepare to take on Chris Wilder’s side this afternoon.

Christian Eriksen: West Ham plotting January move for Inter Milan midfielder

David Sullivan can finally deliver on his London Stadium promise by luring Inter Milan midfielder Christian Eriksen to West Ham United in January.

What’s the word?

According to Eurosport, the Hammers are lining up a shock mid-season move to bring Eriksen back to the Premier League just a year after he quit Tottenham Hotspur for £16.9million.

Inter Milan are expected to allow Eriksen to secure a move away from the San Siro this winter having failed to establish himself at the club and, should he fancy a reunion with the English top-flight, the Irons will put themselves forward with an official bid.

Eriksen has started just four fixtures across all competitions this season with former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte often happy to overlook the 28-year-old, who is without a goal or assist thus far this term.

The Denmark international struggled to find his feet in Italy during his maiden campaign, either, with Eriksen striking home only four times and contributing three assists after leaving north London with a hand in 158 career Tottenham goals (69 scored, 89 assisted).

Mauricio Pochettino once lauded Eriksen as a “special” talent during his time in charge at White Hart Lane, where the 103-cap wonder was nicknamed the “screamer” for being capable of scoring “unbelievable goals”.

Finally delivering on a 10-year promise

Sullivan can finally deliver on the promise he made to West Ham supporters 10-years ago if the Irons co-owner and Chairman is able to lure Eriksen to the club this winter, as he has forever described the move to the London Stadium as a decision which could lead to signings like this.

Sullivan told supporters back in January 2010 that he believed moving away from Upton Park and to the site of the London 2012 Olympics would allow West Ham to turbo-charge revenues and reach another level like Manchester City after their change of ground following the Commonwealth Games.

But Irons fans are yet to see the proof as rather than compete with Man City for European places, the east London side have often been fighting off the threat of relegation with a seventh-place finish in 2015/16 their highest result since 2001/02.

Big-name players like Dimitri Payet did not stick around for long either, as the star of the 2015/16 campaign departed just a year later after seeing the Hammers crash out of the Europa League in the qualifying stages after defeat to Romanian side Astra Giurgiu.

With West Ham currently on course to challenge for their best finish to a Premier League season since moving to the London Stadium, Eriksen – and his Champions League experience – could be the one to get them over the line and back into Europe.

AND in other news, David Sullivan can redefine David Moyes’ West Ham with a winter swoop for a £4.95m-rated maestro.
