Lining up to bowl into Wellington's wind – now that's a new one

Bowlers wanting to bowl into the teeth of Wellington’s wind

Lynn McConnell19-Mar-2002Bowlers wanting to bowl into the teeth of Wellington’s wind? Now that’s a new one. As observers caught watching firstly England, then New Zealand, practise on the wind swept Basin Reserve today, two days out from the second National Bank Series match, will tell you, there are winds, and there are Wellington winds. But England captain Nasser Hussain believes there may be no shortage of volunteers for the into-the-wind duties.”We will need an into-the-wind bowler possibly, although that might be the end to bowl with the prevailing wind. If it comes from there it might swing away.”It’s funny with the wind, at the beginning of the last Test match everyone wanted to bowl at one particular end and then people swing it into the wind a little bit more and everyone wants to bowl at that end,” he said.”A Test match varies, from day to day and which end people want to bowl.”Just what the make-up of England’s side would be on this occasion would depend on how the wicket looked closer to the match start time.”The wicket has got a lot of time before it will be ready.”It looks a bit more traditional soil where it might do a little bit to start with and it might turn a little bit at the end, that’s normal cricket,” he said.England would be looking to lift its game from its success in the first Test. They now had to do what they did in Christchurch, which was getting the greater amount of runs on the board in the first innings, pitching the ball up and swinging it, and then, when it gets a little flatter hitting the deck in the manner of Andy Caddick while also having the middle-order score more runs later on.”They’re the same basics from every Test match really.”It’s just a case now of adapting to conditions and that is what my team talk will be based around, and never taking the game for granted.”It looks like a typical New Zealand wicket. There will be times when it is flat and there will be times when it is doing a bit and you have to adapt your game accordingly.I think that was the same in the last Test and will be the same in the next Test,” he said.

Notts total too much for Surrey despite young Hollioake's efforts

Surrey’s batsmen rarely looked like settling in for a substantial innings against an attack which looked disciplined enough for most of the time to stick mainly to the basics of line and length

Andy Jalil13-May-2001Surrey’s batsmen rarely looked like settling in for a substantial innings against an attack which looked disciplined enough for most of the time to stick mainly to the basics of line and length. At no stage did the Surrey Lions, who eventually went down by 17 runs, give the impression of being well on the way to their target of 234 for victory in this clash between the two promoted teams to the first division of the Norwich Union League.Ben Hollioake, with some magnificent hitting in the latter part of his innings, did provide some hope and much entertainment for the supporters. But had this aggression come from him earlier or, indeed, from the top order batsmen, Surrey might have snatched victory.Nadeem Shahid made good use of his opportunity in the Surrey side in the absence of Alec Stewart, Graham Thorpe and Ian Ward, in scoring a chanceless 43 and Mark Ramprakash chipped in with 30. But it was left to Ben Hollioake to play the major innings. His unbeaten 70 off just 67 balls, contained a six and eight fours, four of which came in the penultimate over which, bowled by Paul Franks, went for 21. It was a great effort by the younger Hollioake brother, but there was little support for him with his side losing wickets with such regularity. Gareth Smith was the pick of the bowlers, his eight overs gave him three for 32.Earlier, in the Nottinghamshire innings, Darren Bicknell enjoyed his time at the crease against his old county. Having hit a century the last time they met in the league, in September at Trent Bridge, Bicknell, this time notched a half-century on a visit to the Oval, his home for twelve years until 1999.Having decided to make first use of a true pitch on a day which had the distinct look of summer with several shirtless spectators, the Outlaws got off to a fine start with two half-century stands. Along with Guy Welton, Bicknell put on 52 and then took the score to 110 in partnership with Greg Blewett for the second wicket. It was a fluent innings from the tall left-hander who had made his intentions clear from the first over when he picked up two boundaries. He continued to play beautiful off side strokes which brought him six boundaries in his 80-ball innings.Blewett’s highly entertaining knock of 69 from 82 balls, ended with Adam Hollioake bowling him with the next ball after being hooked for six. But by then a valuable stand, of 71 for the third-wicket, had taken Nottinghamshire to 181.The visitors went on to produce another hard-hitting innings, it came from Usman Afzaal who missed a fifty by one run having faced only 51 balls. He was caught at short cover off Adam Hollioake who went on to claim Kevin Pietersen’s wicket in the same over. It was a marvellous 19-ball spell from the Surrey captain who eventually finished with three for 56.

Paul Parker slams Van de Beek situation

Almost identical to David Beckham, former defender Paul Parker grew up in east London before going on to represent both Manchester United and England in what proved a glistening playing career.

Parker made his name at Fulham before his impressive stint with rivals Queens Park Rangers caught the attention of the Red Devils, where he went on to win four major trophies, including the first two Premier League titles under Sir Alex Ferguson.

But more than 23 years after his retirement, Parker is set to swap the pitch for the pond when he participates in a new finishing programme called Angling Outlaws, which will be aired on BT Sport next year.

We spoke exclusively to the 57-year-old about several different subjects within football…

Where do you rank both Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka in terms of Premier League full-backs?

“If you’re looking at a pairing, then you have to say they may be the best in the league at this moment in time on current form. Luke Shaw, this season, has shown the reasons why he should be a Manchester United player. He was starting to show that before and then got injured but he got no help from the previous manager.”

Are you surprised that Donny van de Beek has played so little?

“He should have got a load of time. He hasn’t been given an opportunity; I think it’s wrong. I don’t know why United play two holding midfielders at home. When you look at what United are about attacking wise, they’re playing with one attacking player.

“He does work well with Fernandes, he works well with Cavani, he works well with Mata, but he hasn’t been given the opportunity. He should be starting games with Fernandes, Pogba and Cavani. He’s played in big games; he’s played in a Champions League semi-final. I think he’s been let down in certain ways and should have been managed better.”

Is Michail Antonio good enough to be West Ham’s first-choice striker next season?

“Personally I think they’re going to have to get another striker in. Antonio has done incredible, he went through a stage in the season where he deserved fans in the stadium, because he started this run.

“He’s done wonders with them, his performance at Wolves when he did his hamstring, that’s the best his all-round game has been. He made one of the goals, made such an unselfish run for Lingard. He’s learned how to play that role.”

How do you assess your cousin Ben Johnson’s season?

“He hasn’t let himself down. He’s started in big games. He made his debut at Man City; he’s played at Old Trafford twice this season and he’s done well. He’s feeling more and more confident. He’s done himself justice, but I’m sure he will get to a certain point where he wants to become a regular.”

Would you like to see QPR sign Charlie Austin permanently?

“The easiest thing to say if you always look to have experience through the middle. I look at when he left QPR, he went to Southampton and West Brom on Premier League money. He would have to take a massive drop in money. I think they could go out and get a younger striker which would balance the books rather than put everything into one player.”

Have you ever fished before?

“As an 11/12-year-old, I did. I have been out once so far; I went out in a place in Essex and caught an oversized goldfish. It was a goldfish in steroids. It still hasn’t caught me, it’s not fast and furious, I wouldn’t say I was rushing to get back. I’m not a big fan of touching fish, it makes me want to wash my hands.”

Do you know Frank McAvennie, Ray Houghton or Tony Gale?

“I know all of them quite well. I know Frank from playing against him – I made my top-level debut playing against Frank for Rangers against West Ham and I have played a lot of ex-pro games against him. The other two I know well because we were at Fulham together. We signed Ray Houghton on a free transfer from West Ham – maybe the best free transfer of all time, his career will tell you that. Tony Gale, I have known since I was 14 as a kid to when I was an apprentice and I used to clean his boots.”

Paul Parker will be joining Ray Houghton, Tony Gale and Frank McAvennie on BT Sport’s Angling Outlaws, next summer.

With the help of Outlaw Pro, the four former pros will be trying their hand at fishing, with the quadruplet facing off at the end of the six-part series to see who knows their slide tackles from their tackle boxes.

Adkins played blinder in big Charlton call

Charlton Athletic bolstered their promotion hopes with an emphatic victory over Plymouth Argyle earlier this week, with the three points moving the side up into the playoff zone.

It also stretched their unbeaten run to ten games, which could prove to be a game-changer when the post-season swings around as they are proving to be undefeatable right now.

And Nigel Adkins deserves plenty of credit as he has continued that run of form despite taking over from Lee Bowyer last month.

On Tuesday night, he made a bold call to axe – or rest – one of his star performers, Ryan Inniss and evidently, it paid dividends as they kept a clean sheet on their way to a storming 6-0 victory.

Having signed in the summer, the 25-year-old has endured a campaign blighted by injury and after missing 27 straight league games, including Adkins’ first match in charge against AFC Wimbledon.

But he stepped in to keep a clean sheet against Doncaster Rovers, looked just as solid against promotion rivals Sunderland and Ipswich struggled to score past him, too.

Therefore to drop him in midweek was certainly a major call to make with him rounding back into form himself.

Speaking after clinching the 6 foot 5 titan in the summer, Bowyer waxed lyrical about his ability to the club’s official website, he said:

“It has been difficult as there are not many right-footed centre-halves out there but we have managed to get a very good one. Ryan is a winner, it is important when you have players like that at the back, and he’s a leader, an organiser and in that centre-half position that is what we were looking for.”

As per WhoScored ratings, the 25-year-old colossus (7.33) is only second to Jayden Stockley (7.48) and is also proving to be a huge aerial threat in this side, again ranking behind the target man striker (9.8) for aerial duels won (6.8) this term.

In his place, Adkins opted for Norwich City loanee Akin Famewo and he delivered alongside skipper Jason Pearce.

The 22-year-old gem was graded amongst the Addicks’ star performers with a 7.6 rating, better than the rest of the backline and only bettered by the goalscoring Stockley.

Famewo was a commanding presence, recording a game-high three blocks, putting his body on the line to deny Argyle a goal despite his side romping to an easy victory.

Whilst the young defender also put in four clearances and two interceptions, on top of winning 100% of his battles in the air, as per SofaScore.

The decision to rest Inniss for Famewo certainly turned out to be a blinding call from Adkins, and that’ll be good to know should the former Palace graduate pick up another injury or if further rotation is needed.

Tim Spiers reacts to Max Kilman exit report

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ young star Max Kilman has recently been linked with a move away from Molineux.

Kilman out?

Football Insider recently revealed that the Black Country club were strongly considering offloading the 23-year-old next season, whether it be a permanent transfer or loan move.

This comes after Kilman put pen to paper on a new five-year deal back in October with his contract not due to expire until 2025.

Kilman is adored by his teammates at the club, particularly by skipper Conor Coady who told the club’s official website that he was “outstanding” who is “brilliant to have around.”

Responding to a fan on Twitter, Spiers revealed that manager Nuno Espirito Santo was exploring the option of a possible season-long loan spell at the start of the season, but added it could be too late for such a move now.

Transfer Tavern Verdict

The jury is still out as far as Kilman is concerned, even though the 2020/21 campaign is the most first-team football he has played so far in one season.

The Englishman is yet to score a goal for Wolves but has provided one assist, averaged 1.3 tackles and 2.2 clearances (Whoscored).

Whether his performances will force the Wolves hierarchy to reconsider keeping him at the club, remains to be seen. Nevertheless, Kilman’s future seems to be out of his hands at this point.
