Everton make contact to sign Seferovic

This is an exciting time to be an Everton supporter even if you aren’t a keen admirer of the new manager, Rafa Benitez.

Once again, the Toffees are set to flex their financial muscles with big bids lined up for various players.

What’s the word?

Everton are battling a few Premier League teams for the signature of Ben White this summer while La Liga stars Philippe Coutinho and Isco are also on their radar.

It’s evident that the Merseyside outfit want to strengthen in a host of positions but one area they don’t necessarily need someone is up front.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin netted 21 goals last term but that hasn’t deterred Everton from eyeing a move for Haris Seferovic.

Their interest in the Swiss striker was revealed last week and according to a new report from O Jogo (via Sport Witness), they have now been in contact to sign him.

Everton are battling West Ham for his services and have collected references over Seferovic.

Benfica valued him at just €15m (£13m) before the European Championships but following some impressive performances, the Portuguese are now set to demand €25m (£21.4m) instead.

Perfect for Everton

As Calvert-Lewin demonstrated last term, playing with a target man in this Everton side works like a treat.

He scored the highest number of goals by an Everton player since Romelu Lukaku in 2016/17, reigning supreme in the air by winning 4.7 aerial duels per game.

Seven of his 21 strikes came with his head as the England international proved he was capable of beating the vast majority of centre-backs in the air.

Seferovic could bring a similar sort of threat to Goodison Park if he arrives. He won 2.1 aerial duels per game for Benfica last term on his way to scoring a breathtaking 26 times.

That took his overall tally for Benfica to 69 strikes and he has since impressed immensely for Switzerland at Euro 2020.

A huge threat in aerial situations, the forward scored twice with his head during their remarkable victory over World Champions, France, in the last 16.

Describing one of the strikes, commentator Ally McCoist said he was “superb” for the way he rose above some of the game’s elite defenders.

The Toffees have become accustomed to playing with a target man so Seferovic and the squad shouldn’t need too much adjustment time.

Providing Benitez can iron out his inconsistencies, he’d be a wise signing for the Toffees.

Leicester City linked with James Tarkowski

Leicester City have been linked with a move for Burnley defender James Tarkowski ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

What’s the story?

According to Lancs Live, the Turf Moor outfit are anticipating renewed interest in their centre-back after another impressive campaign.

Brendan Rodgers’ charges tabled a bid for Tarkowski last summer, along with West Ham United, but both offers were rejected after failing to match Burnley’s £50m asking price.

Rodgers needs him

The Foxes missed out on a top-four finish by a single point in the recently-concluded campaign after a final day defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Injuries to all of Leicester’s key centre-backs throughout the season hampered the progress of the 2016 Premier League champions, with Jonny Evans, Wesley Fofana and Caglar Soyuncu all spending significant periods on the sidelines.

Their lack of strength in depth, combined with the departure of club captain Wes Morgan, has left the Midlands outfit prioritising a new defender this summer, meaning that another move for Tarkowski is expected.

The Leicester Mercury claimed that the Rodgers’ men are favourite to secure the England international’s signature over the coming months as the Northern Irish manager looks to bolster his first team squad for next season.

Tarkowski has won many plaudits for his impressive displays since arriving at Burnley back in 2016, earing high praise from his manager after a standout performance on his debut.

“Keano (Michael Keane) often gets the story, but that’s Tarky’s first Premier League start, I think that’s outstanding, to play against someone like (Christian) Benteke, get hit by a lighter, stay focused, get the job done,” Dyche said.

“I’m not interested in talking about Keano because Tarky’s been absolutely outstanding.”

Since then, the £22.5m-rated beast has gone from strength to strength, making 182 appearances for the Lancashire side as they’ve continued to defy expectations and maintain their Premier League status.

It’s no surprise that the Burnley hierarchy are trying to convince Tarkowski to extend his current contract with the club, which is set to expire in the summer of 2022.

“We have open lines of communication with him and his agent, as we do with all the players, and as far as I’m concerned he’s a Burnley player,” Dyche recently revealed.

“Contractual situations are private and personal, or they should be, they’re often not, but he’s been fantastic. He (Tarkowski) knows my thoughts on his future here, he knows I want him here. He knows his contract is where it is, everyone knows that, but he’ll be here as far as I’m concerned, it’s simple

“If someone wants to write a cheque for an immeasurable amount then that might be different, but at the moment he’s a Burnley player, and he’s done very well again for us this season. He’s a quality player.”

It remains to be seen whether Leicester can finally land their man this time around, but with Morgan’s departure and Rodgers’ ambitious hopes, director of football Jon Rudkin must do all he can to land Tarkowski as the Foxes attempt to secure a Champions League qualification spot at the end of next season.

Merece ficar no Fla?

Lingard drops another West Ham shocker

West Ham United suffered a massive blow to their Champions League hopes as they were defeated 1-0 by Everton at the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Irons have enjoyed quite the season but this result puts a huge dent on their chances of topping it off with something special. They remain fifth for the time being, but Liverpool could leapfrog them if they win their game in hand later this week.

David Moyes won’t be too pleased by the performance, either – for all of their dominance, recording 68% possession, his side failed to register a single shot on target throughout the 90 minutes.

It seems like their star man failed to deliver once again, and if he’s not at the races, the Hammers usually aren’t either.

There is no denying that Jesse Lingard has made a phenomenal impact since joining on loan from Manchester United in January – after all, he has provided nine goals and three assists in 13 starts to become their joint-top scorer.

However, the last two matches have been underwhelming by his standards, and that culminated in a disasterclass at a time when it really counted. As per SofaScore, the 28-year-old was graded as one of West Ham’s worst performers with a 6.1 rating – that was the joint-worst of any player to feature throughout the game.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-latest-west-ham-transfer-rumours-gossip-team-injury-news-gsb-update” title= “Read the latest West Ham news, transfer rumours, gossip and more!”]

In the number 10 role once again, Lingard struggled to get going. He had two shots blocked, failed to register a single successful dribble from two attempts, and committed three fouls (SofaScore).

Considering he has averaged 1.5 shots on target and 1.2 dribbles per outing this term, it was certainly far from what the 28-year-old would expect.

Furthermore, he evidently struggled with the physical threat on offer from the Toffees, especially with Allan back in the holding role. Lingard won just two of his 12 duels (17%) and also lost possession a whopping 15 times, meaning every five of his touches saw him gift the ball back to the visitors.

Last time out, the Irons had to come from behind to snatch victory at Burnley but that was largely down to the goalscoring exploits of Michail Antonio. If you’re being honest, it was another game where the England international appeared to be largely anonymous and missing that creative edge to his game.

He lost possession 14 times in that game, won just three of eight duels (37.5%) and was one of two starters to be graded worse than 7.0, as per SofaScore.

If the Hammers are to get their European quest back on track, then they need the £13.5m-rated dynamo on top form once again. Three straight games without a goal or assist is a worrying trend when the top four appears to be slipping out of reach.

Moyes must do what he can to bring the best back out of his playmaker, otherwise it could be an anti-climactic end to what has been a phenomenal campaign in east London.

Leeds eyeing VfL Wolfsburg’s Josip Brekalo

Leeds United could land an exciting winger in VfL Wolfsburg Josip Brekalo amid a major transfer update.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days have suggested that Marcelo Bielsa’s side are interested in signing the 22-year-old in the summer transfer window, and that the Whites were among those to have watched the Croatian in action over these past few months in the Bundesliga.

Now, Italian publication TuttoMercatoWeb claim that Leeds are set to face significant competition from Jose Mourinho’s new side AS Roma, as well as French outfit Lille.

Imagine him and Raphinha

After seeing the success of Brazilian star Raphinha in his debut campaign in English football, the prospect of him being joined at Elland Road by Brekalo is exciting to say the least.

The Croatian has enjoyed a fine season in the Bundesliga this season for Wolfsburg, netting seven goals and providing another three assists in 28 games in the top-flight, including scoring a hat-trick earlier this month against Union Berlin.

Goal’s Bundesliga journalist Ronan Murphy said on Twitter: “The less said about his off-field antics the better, as he should leave his on-field performances do the talking. Able to unlock defences and strong cutting in to shoot, he will torment defenders everywhere.”

And, when you look at his key attacking numbers, it’s easy to see why he would be such a threat in the Premier League.

As per Whoscored, he averages 1.7 shots, 1.3 key passes and one dribble per game in the Bundesliga, all of which rank him in the top five for each category among his Wolfsburg teammates.

The left-winger, who can play on the opposite flank too, has got the ability to be a real dangerous player in the coming years, and at just 22, has still got plenty of time to grow and develop under someone like Bielsa.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Leeds transfer rumours and news!”]

With Raphinha on the right and Brekalo on the left, Leeds would have a pair of direct wingers who come inside onto their stronger foot and can “torment defenders everywhere” as Murphy says.

Meanwhile, this Leeds man sent Bielsa a huge message against Southampton…

Bundesliga expert tips Favre for Celtic job

Bundesliga expert Daniel Pinder has told Football FanCast in an exclusive interview that Lucien Favre would be a “decent appointment” for Celtic.

The former Borussia Dortmund manager is currently being linked with the Glasgow club as their search for a new man for the dugout goes on.

Eddie Howe quickly became the frontrunner for the vacancy following Neil Lennon’s resignation at the end of February, but Celtic appear to have hit a stumbling block in their pursuit of the ex-Bournemouth boss.

It has left the Bhoys needing to consider other options and, according to Football Insider, Favre is seen as a viable alternative to Howe.

For Pinder, the editor-in-chief at Get German Football News, Celtic could do a lot worse than Favre. Speaking exclusively to FFC about the 63-year-old, he said:

“Obviously he was at Nice in France and then he replaced Thomas Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund, so it wasn’t a big rebuild. But they lost players like Ousmane Dembele, [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang and he had to bring in those other players for, you know, less funds than they had.

“Looking at it, he has done a decent job at rebuilding. Whether he can go into a job that’s already there all set up for him, I think that’s a different matter. But if he goes into a rebuild job, I think it’d be a pretty decent appointment.”

Given how far off the pace Celtic were in the title race this season and the fact that players such as captain Scott Brown are leaving the club in the summer, a rebuild at Celtic Park looks necessary.

With that in mind, perhaps Favre could end up being a shrewd appointment for Celtic.
