Celtic: Postecoglou confirms injury doubt

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has confirmed a fresh doubt over David Turnbull ahead of the Hoops’ Scottish Cup semi-final clash this coming weekend.

The lowdown: Not so perfect

As the Bhoys completed a 7-0 annihilation of St Johnstone at Parkhead to temporarily move nine points clear at the top of the Premiership, all appeared to be positive for Postecgolou.

However, soon after the match, it emerged that Greek striker Giorgos Giakoumakis had suffered a hamstring injury before being replaced in the first half.

Now it appears that Celtic have a fresh concern regarding another key player…

The latest: Turnbull a doubt

Speaking to Celtic TV, as quoted by The Herald, Postecoglou admitted that there is also concern over Turnbull’s availability for the semi-final against Rangers on Sunday.

The 56-year-old stated: “Nothing concrete yet. Again, we’re still waiting on the final scans on it.

“Hopefully, it’s not too bad. He [Giakoumakis] feels like it’s not too bad. But until we get the information we won’t know.

“Similar with David Turnbull, he obviously got a pretty hard knock. It’s only a couple of days after so we’ll see how it all settles down.

“With both, I’m hoping it’s not too lengthy an absence.”

The verdict: Worth the risk?

So far this term, the 27-year-old Greek marksman has scored 13 times in 24 appearances, whilst Turnbull – who was hailed as a ‘class act’ by ex-Hoops boss Neil Lennon – has directly contributed to 17 goals in 37 outings across all competitions. Therefore, both are players who can make a discernible impact.

As Postecoglou prepares for what looks to be a crucial run-in on the quest for a domestic treble, it seems unlikely that the 56-year-old would take any unnecessary risk over two players of such importance.

Having won both Old Firm derbies since the turn of the year, the Hoops go into the semi-final encounter full of confidence, and with the returning Kyogo Furuhashi fit and available once again.

In the absence of Giakoumakis and Turnbull, the Japanese forward could be called upon to lead the line, whilst Tom Rogic, Callum McGregor and Reo Hatate are likely to make up the midfield trio.

Newcastle United: Dan Burn could outshine Bruno

What started out as a slow-moving transfer window for Newcastle United ended on a very positive note, and Eddie Howe will no doubt feel the signings his club made in January have addressed some of the desperate issues facing his squad.

Bruno Guimaraes’ big-money arrival from Lyon was no doubt the highlight, with reports suggesting that fellow Premier League side Arsenal were interested in his services.

But, while the Brazilian could be a big player for the future for the Magpies, it might be Dan Burn’s signature from Brighton that really makes the difference for the Tyneside club this season.

With the second-worst defensive record in the Premier League this year with 43 goals conceded, Newcastle were in bad need of a really dominant defender, and while Burn has predominantly played at left-back for the Seagulls this campaign, he would surely be much more of an influence by returning to the heart of defence.

The 6 foot 7 defender himself said: “I’ve enjoyed centre-back. When I was playing left-back or wing-back I was enjoying it. It wasn’t my natural position, there were some things I was limited on going forward. Now playing centre-half again I’ve realised how much I’ve missed playing there. I’ve always known I could play centre-half at this level. I’m proving to people that I can do it now.”

As per Whoscored, Burn’s average of 1.7 tackles and 1.8 interceptions per game in the Premier League this season is far better than that of any Newcastle centre-back, while only Jamal Lascelles has won more aerial duels than him.

Indeed, some analysis done by The Athletic revealed: “Burn’s aerial presence could be a real advantage at both ends of the pitch. When accounting for the strength of the opponent faced in an aerial battle, you can see below how he comes out a lot stronger than Diego Carlos — he is certainly used to the style of the Premier League.”

It’s no surprise then that his former boss at the Seagulls, Graham Potter, is a big fan of the defender, dubbing him as “incredible” and saying: “Anyone that criticises someone like Dan Burn doesn’t understand football, ultimately. I wouldn’t listen to them. It’s irrelevant to me. Dan just gives his best every day.

“He’s playing at the highest level. He’s a fantastic example of what a top athlete should be in terms of it’s not going to go well every day but he recovers, he fights; he fights for the team. He’s everything you’d want from a professional footballer, so just let the ‘experts’ talk.”

As well as that much-needed Premier League experience, Burn appears to be the right kind of person mentality-wise, which is exactly what Newcastle will need in a relegation scrap.

So while Bruno’s signing is the one that might have got Magpies fans very excited, it’s Burn who could make the real season-defining impact given that he’s much more likely to hit the ground running.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are now set to make this decision…

Symonds fires to deliver Surrey win

After a spluttering start to the season Andrew Symonds finally ignited for Surrey to haul them out from 35 for 4 to 150 for 7, before Kent’s top-order folded to deliver Surrey a 16-run win

After a spluttering start to the season Andrew Symonds finally ignited for Surrey to haul them up from 35 for 4 to 150 for 7, before Kent’s top-order folded to deliver Surrey a 16-run win.The match was brought forward to allow fans, players and just about everyone else involved the chance to watch England’s football World Cup match. Batting under leaden skies at The Oval, the Kent batsmen duly aided the process, donating their wickets away freely before rain came to force an early finish. It was in stark contrast to Symonds’ powerful innings which contained all the nous and ability you’d expect from the world’s only Twenty20 freelancer. Having contributed just 40 runs in five games this season Symonds owed the Oval crowd a few and after starting quietly he launched into the sort of match-turning innings he was signed for.He got his knock going by easing his enormous arms through a length ball from Simon Cook to send it careering back down the ground into the stands over long on and thereafter six more sixes came in a flash. James Tredwell dished up a full toss, which Symonds only needed one hand to swing over long on and two overs later Symonds swatted Malinga Bandara for successive sixes to bring up a fifty from 24 balls. All the while Stewart Walters was calmly impressing at the other end, working the ball around and picking off a few boundaries of his own, during a 62-ball partnership of 95 that revived Surrey’s fortunes. At one stage it had looked as though Kent were going to flatten Surrey’s inconsistent batting order. Rory Hamilton-Brown, coming off the back of an authoritative 73 against Middlesex in the previous game, was trapped in front off Darren Stevens in the third over and Stevens’ wobbling medium pace did for Steven Davies two balls later.Mark Ramprakash and Younis Khan threatened a recovery, with Ramprakash landing a classy back-foot force through the covers, but he fell the next ball, spooning a catch to Rob Key at cover trying to repeat the dose. When Younis missed an aimless hoik to be bowled by Cook, it seemed almost unthinkable that Surrey would emerge with respectability.Instead it was Kent who left embarrassed. Their chase got off to a poor start when Rob Key slipped attempting a single to end up ingloriously on his backside when the bails were taken off. Two overs later, after some testing quick bowling form Chris Tremlett, Martin van Jaarsveld became the second run out of the innings, unable to get back after setting off for a single to short midwicket. Sam Northeast was unsettled by a barrage from Tremlett first up and his frantic knock came to end when he was yorked by Tim Linley.Reduced to 61 for 5 by the halfway stage and with the skies becoming ever more murky, the game was as good as up. There was enough time for Stevens to swish 33 and for the infamous Oval fox to cheer the crowds by darting across the outfield, before the rains came to bring an early a finish.

AVFC must complete Gomez transfer deal

Now that the 2022 January transfer window has opened, this will spark a flurry of potential transfer deals across a range of clubs as they aim to strengthen their squads.

At Aston Villa, it has previously been reported that manager Steven Gerrard will be given the backing from the owners to make whatever changes to the club that he thinks will benefit them in terms of bringing new players in.

With this in mind, it could prove to be a very busy month for the Midlands club, on and off the pitch.

After making just nine Premier League appearances for Villa since joining on loan from Manchester United back in August, and with just eight minutes of league action since Gerrard’s took over from Dean Smith as Villa’s manager in November, it seems as though Axel Tuanzebe could be on his way out of the club.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently shared a post on his official Twitter account claiming that a deal has been worked out between United and Napoli that will see Tuanzebe spend the rest of the season on loan with the Italian club.

Taking this into account, it could be worth Villa bringing a new defender in to take Tuanzebe’s place in the squad so they aren’t depleted in that area.

Having been linked with a transfer move for Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez in recent weeks, this update about Tuanzebe could now pave the way for Villa and Gerrard to finally secure a deal for the defender, who is currently picking up a weekly wage of £85k-per-week according to Salary Sport, and bring him to Villa Park.

With a total of 82 appearances in the Premier League, Gomez would certainly bring a decent amount of experience with him to Villa as well as an elite winning mentality having won the Premier League and Champions League during his time at Anfield.

Labelled as a “sensational” player in the past by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, Gomez has found regular game time in the Premier League hard to come by this season with just three fairly short substitute appearances under his belt so far, which could result in a move to Villa being quite tempting for him if he’d get regular playing time under Gerrard’s guidance.

Moving forward, if Tuanzebe is set to leave Villa in the coming days, the club should be turning their attention to securing a deal for Gomez as soon as they can so the team doesn’t suffer should any of their other defenders end up with injuries or a positive virus test.

'No pressure at all' – Lehmann

The Deccan Chargers coach has said there is no pressure on him or the team to repeat last year’s success, which resulted in them lifting the IPL title in South Africa

Deccan Chargers coach Darren Lehmann has said there is no pressure on him or the team to repeat last year’s success. Deccan made a remarkable turnaround under Lehmann, emerging victors in 2009 after having finished bottom of the table in the inaugural season when Robin Singh was coach.”There is no pressure at all,” Lehmann said. “Obviously, they need to go out and enjoy themselves, that is more important for me. I like players playing an entertaining brand of cricket. We are going to have our ups and downs. That’s what happens in cricket. But we have to fight another day and see how it goes.”Deccan will not be playing their home games in Hyderabad, the venue where they have failed to win any match during the IPL’s first season and the inaugural Champions League Twenty20. The city will not be hosting any matches this season in a move perceived to be a response to the sporadic violence that has hit the region due to a separatist movement in the state. According to the revised schedule, Deccan would be playing their home games across three venues in Mumbai, Nagpur and Cuttack.”We would have loved to play at home, but we are not,” Lehmann said. “We can’t control that. We would have liked to see fans from Hyderabad and Andhra Pradesh come and watch us play. We hope some of them will travel and follow the team.”Lehmann said Herschelle Gibbs would figure in Deccan’s top order and that he was expecting big things from Andrew Symonds, another international recruit, as well. “Gibbs looked good today [during the practice game],” Lehmann said. “He is a class player, so we are very happy to have him back. He came down the batting order for South Africa in the recent one-day series [in India], but he will play at the top of the order for us.”Andrew Symonds is very popular with the public. He is a very good player. He is a leader and has been part of the team strategy.”Lehmann said player workloads would also be managed over the next month-and-a-half. “It’s been a long season for the Indians,” Lehmann said. “They have played a lot and we need to freshen them up. Traditionally, the Indian players like to hit more but we have to make sure they are fresh to give 110% when the games come along.”Deccan begin their campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders in the tournament opener on March 12 at the DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai. Though, Kolkata were the whipping boys last time around and finished last, Lehmann said his team would not take them lightly.”In Twenty20, you need to play consistent cricket,” Lehmann said. “They [Kolkata] certainly have the players and we’ll be wary of them.”

Spurs lead Dusan Vlahovic transfer race

Tottenham Hotspur are proving to be tough competition in the race for the signature of Fiorentina striker Dušan Vlahović and are considered to be ahead of other prospective suitors, as per Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Sport Witness).

The Lowdown

Over the course of the past year, the Serbian striker has been linked with a myriad of clubs. The 21-year-old prospect has received widespread attention across Europe after scoring 15 goals in 17 Serie A games this season, and former Manchester City ace Stevan Jovetić has even been quoted saying that “he will be the best striker of the next few years with Erling Haaland”.

The Serbia international’s contract in Florence is set to expire in the summer of 2023. This means that the Serie A club may be forced to sell him by next summer if they want to avoid the possibility of him leaving on a free transfer the following year.

Despite him having a current market value of £45m, Fabrizio Romano has reported that Fiorentina president Rocco Commisso will demand a fee of at least €70m (£59.5m) for Vlahović in the January transfer window.

The Latest

According to Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Tottenham are proving to be tough competition in the race for Vlahović’s signature, and they are considered to be above other contenders in their pursuit of the 21-year-old, or ‘above all’ as the report put it.

Italian duo Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici are believed to have identified the Fiorentina attacker as the perfect addition to the Spurs squad.

Tottenham face competition from Juventus, who have also targeted Vlahović in their search of a new number nine. It is reported that Spurs have a vastly superior budget to the Turin club, which could prove to be the deciding factor if the player is allowed to leave in the January transfer window.

The Verdict

With Harry Kane having scored just one Premier League goal in 13 games this season, it may be essential that Tottenham bring in a striker to bolster their attacking options in their bid for Champions League qualification.

Vlahović could be the answer to Conte’s Kane dilemma, with the Serbian netting a goal in every 101 minutes this season.

However, despite this encouraging report, it could be difficult for Spurs to secure the services of the prolific Serbian striker, as a number of European giants are set to battle it out for the player. Also, the likes of Juventus can offer him Champions League football, a selling point that Tottenham don’t have.

Barbados collapse hands Leewards pole position

A dramatic batting collapse by Barbados handed Leeward Islands first-innings points in Kingston. Chasing Leewards’ first-innings total of 236, the Barbados openers put on 103 before a spectacular capitulation to 229 all out. The spin duo of Anthony Martin (3 for 38) and Omari Banks (2 for 41) helped themselves to the spoils, bowling well especially in the afternoon session. Opener Dale Richards and top-order batsman Kirk Edwards both scored 60 but were the only ones to show any real enterprise. Edwards struck seven fours and was instrumental in keeping the Barbados innings together. The match was still going the way of Barbados, who were 146 for 3 at lunch. But with Martin accounting for Kyle Hope and Kevin Stoute off successive deliveries, and Gavin Tonge getting Shamarh Brooks caught behind in the next over for a duck, three wickets tumbled for two runs. There was even lesser joy after tea, barring a valuable 33-run ninth-wicket stand between Edwards and Nekolai Charles, as they succumbed in the 77th over of the day. Leewards then safely navigated 15 overs to take stumps at 20 for no loss.Career-best figures from Kavesh Kantasingh spun the Combined Campuses & Colleges (CCC) into a formidable position against Trinidad & Tobago in Montego Bay. The 23-year-old left-arm spinner captured 6 for 29, as T&T were dismissed for 105 just over an hour after lunch, replying to CCC’s first-innings total of 234. Jason Bennett provided the early breakthrough, when he had Justin Guillen lbw for 10. But just when T&T seemed to be making headway, Kantasingh claimed three scalps in the final half-hour before lunch toleave T&T on 65 for 4. T&T captain Daren Ganga manged the highest score of 44, before the all-spin attack of Kantasingh and Ryan Austin hastened the end. CCC were left wobbling at 97 for 4 in their second essay, but opener Omar Phillips held firm with an unbeaten 51 to carry CCC to 105, before bad light and rain conspired to prompt an early close.Wavell Hinds and Donovan Pagon put in solid batting performances to hand defending champions Jamaica a healthy first-innings lead against Windward Islands in Spanish Town. Hinds top scored with 95 and Pagon managed 56, as Jamaica were dismissed for 335. The Windwards bowlers were made to toil long and hard and sloppy fielding did not help. Pagon, who began the day on 9, kept the Jamaica innings together, in the early stages. He played the anchor role in partnerships with captain Tamar Lambert and Brendan Nash, hitting eight fours during his 115-ball stay. Jamaica had slipped to 151 for 5, when Pagon was stumped on the second attempt by wicketkeeper Lyndon James off Rawl Lewis, but Hinds and Dave Bernard jnr consolidated with a 78-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Hinds though, missed out on three figures after he was bowled by Keon Peters. Andrew Richardson then strengthened the Jamaica’s grip on the match, when he removed Devon Smith for a duck, as Windwards reached 19 for 1 at stumps.

Pietersen form not a worry – Flower

It isn’t only the crowds that Kevin Pietersen is having to battle in South Africa, but also his own form after a four-month injury lay-off following Achilles surgery. His innings during the one-day series have been unconvincing, but given the career he has already had, expectations were always going to be high as soon as he returned to the England side. His soft chip to midwicket at Port Elizabeth ended a six-ball 3 in which he had already been dropped at long leg off a top-edged hook. At Centurion Park he made 29 off 19 balls in the second Twenty20, his comeback match, but managed just 4 in the one-day international on the same ground. His top score of 45 came in Cape Town but, although there was the odd glimpse of his usual style, he looked like a player feeling his way back. The camp, though, remain unconcerned about Pietersen’s results. Before the fourth ODI, Paul Collingwood said it was only to be expected that he would struggle for a while after such a long time out and now the coach, Andy Flower, has said he it was always going to be a challenge for Pietersen.”I wouldn’t be too worried. I think he’s going to take a little while to get back in form,” Flower told reporters after England arrived in Durban. “Being out for four months – when he’s used to playing all the time – I think is a challenge he’s going to have to overcome.”He’s a high achiever, an outstanding sportsman – and he will be very impatient to get back into his dominant ways again. I think we should be patient with him, because it’s not easy just to walk back in and dominate straight away.”Given Pietersen’s record of performing best when the pressure is on, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him emerge from his early problems during the final one-day international at Durban – his old home ground for Natal and where he first encountered England during the 1999-2000 tour and made his intentions known about switching allegiance.”He tends to want to do it his way,” Flower said. “That’s part of his strength, his make-up – what makes him a different and very powerful player for us. He will score heavy runs on this tour, and maybe Friday is the day. It could be his day.”
