Rain threatened to extinguish the Heat and Scorchers at the Gabba but instead it ignited an incredible display of power hitting as Nathan Coulter-Nile and Shaun Marsh took 29 from the last six balls of the match to chase down the Duckworth-Lewis target of 51 inside five overs.Less than a week after rain helped inflict a farcical loss at the hands of the Melbourne Stars, Perth got the benefit of the Duckworth-Lewis in Brisbane.The Heat, having been sent in to bat, were moving towards a healthy total at 4 for 109 with 41 balls remaining in their innings when persistent rain intervened and ended their innings prematurely. The rain stopped just in time to allow a five-over run chase. The Heat seemed to have it in control after three overs. James Hopes had removed the dangerous Herschelle Gibbs and the Scorchers needed 28 from 10 balls.Nathan Coulter-Nile, who earlier seemed a villain for Perth with the ball, conceding 39 from his three overs, was promoted to No. 3 and it proved a master-stroke from Simon Katich. The powerful right-hand batsman edged Dan Christian fine to third man to make it 24 required from 9 deliveries. He then hit Christian inside out over the expansive cover fence for six to make it 18 from 8. The next ball from Christian was drilled through cover along the carpet for four more. Fourteen needed from 7 deliveries. Christian then delivered a half-volley in the slot and Coulter-Nile hit it 101m back over the bowler’s head. Twenty-one was taken from the over. Coulter-Nile had scored 23 from just six balls faced and the Scorchers needed only 8 from the fifth over to win.Shaun Marsh had only found the boundary once in his 11 off 9 balls to this point. He swung Thisara Perera lustily to deep-square but a brilliant diving stop from Ben Cutting saved two runs to leave 6 off 5 required. Marsh needed just one as he drove the Sri Lanka bowler powerfully straight for six and the Scorchers had won the lottery. This was the tenth successful chase in ten games so far in the tournament.The Heat would be left to wonder what might have been after Chris Lynn and Christian rescued their innings from a disastrous start. Luke Pomersbach and Hopes both fell to Alfonso Thomas in the first over of the match, Pomersbach to a sensational running catch by Hilton Cartwright on the rope.Joe Burns holed out in the fourth over from Michael Beer to leave the Heat reeling at 3 for 19. But then Lynn took charge. He clubbed 18 from Coulter-Nile’s second over, did the same to Cartwright in the ninth, before taking a second helping of 16 from Coulter-Nile in the 11th, with each over featuring a massive six. Lynn brought up the fastest fifty of the tournament before picking out Thomas on the square-leg rope to end his electric 29-ball innings.Christian’s cameo was important and threatened to become much more than that but rain halted his charge, doused the Heat, and gave the Scorchers the chance to win their second match in a row and put themselves back into tournament contention.

Defending champions Australia opened their Under-19 World Cup campaign with a comprehensive victory against England, set up by a powerful fast-bowling performance on a quick pitch in Townsville. Their top order struggled against the new ball during the chase, but that wobble was shored up by Travis Head and the captain William Bosisto, who played mature innings and shared a match-winning partnership.The tournament began in idyllic conditions. The Tony Ireland Stadium on the outskirts of town, surrounded by grass banks, trees and hills, was bathed in sunshine under a cloudless sky. A cool breeze blew through the day to take the edge off the sun. In perfect weather for cricket watching, a fair number of spectators turned up even though this tournament has had little publicity in Australia. Not many cheered when Bosisto won the toss, but that little bit of luck was important given the pace and bounce in the pitch.Australia’s opening bowlers – the left-right combination of Joel Paris and Mark Steketee – struck in their first overs. Paris, bowling with the wind, trapped Daniel Bell-Drummond, who had made 91 in the warm-up against Pakistan and is one of England’s premier batsmen, leg before for a duck with an inswinger. In this extremely professional environment, there was a reminder that the competitors are only young boys when Bell-Drummond came into the grandstand and got a consoling hug from his father, who has made the trip to watch his son play.Steketee, who ran into the stiff wind, took two balls to bowl Ben Foakes, who had made a hundred in the Pakistan warm-up but shouldered arms today to another inswinger. Paris and Steketee bowled with impressive stamina, sustaining pace and bounce through seven-over opening spells. He and Topley struck again to reduce Australia to 30 for 3 by the time it was time for lunch.Australia lost another quickly after the break – the promising Kurtis Patterson – but things were about to improve. Bosisto did what was needed, to stay at the wicket, while Head scored quickly to take the pressure off. Head had made 87 off 42 balls against Scotland and today he ensured that Australia did not stagnate in a challenging situation.Head brought up his half-century off 52 balls and, shortly after measured celebrations, he lofted Craig Overton over the long-on boundary to seal victory with the first six of the match. It was no mean effort. The boundaries at the Tony Ireland Stadium are large.

But with flood water currently covering three pitches on the square and a large portion of the outfield, the club have decided to make contingency plans.David Leatherdale, the Worcestershire chief executive, said: “The flood levels at New Road, which peaked on Wednesday, are now starting to subside, and the standing water on the outfield is receding, although slowly. With further rain forecast for early next week and in order to guarantee the best possible chance of playing the four- day match against Surrey, the match will be played at Kidderminster, along with our CB40 one-day game against Netherlands on Monday.”The game is notable not only for the appearance of Kevin Pietersen, playing in his only Championship match ahead of the Test series against West Indies, but the return of Surrey’s former Worcestershire keeper Steve Davies, who used to play club cricket for Kidderminster.Worcestershire hope to return to New Road for the Championship match against Sussex scheduled to start on Wednesday 16th May.

Talha didn’t play for Pakistan in their 10-wicket win in Dubai, but he did pick up four wickets in the warm-up game for the PCB XI prior to the Test series. Cheema said Pakistan would not be calling in a replacement.The second Test begins in Abu Dhabi on January 25.

Gautam Gambhir will not play in the upcoming Champions League Twenty20 qualifying tournament for Kolkata Knight Riders as he has not recovered sufficiently from the concussion he sustained during India’s fourth Test against England at The Oval. Jacques Kallis will lead the team in Gambhir’s absence.A Kolkata official told ESPNcricinfo that Gambhir, who is the captain of the side, may still recover in time for the main tournament, should the team make it through the qualifier, which will be played from September 19 to 21.Gambhir was sent home from the tour of England earlier this month after hitting his head on the ground while attempting to catch Kevin Pietersen on the third day of the final Test at The Oval. He was advised complete rest for ten days along with medication.Since his return, Gambhir has been consulting a leading neurologist in New Delhi, and while the doctor has been happy with the progress he has made – Gambhir can perform day-to-day tasks with no trouble – the player has been advised to start physical training gradually. Kolkata are hopeful that if they go through to the main tournament, Gambhir would then have had another week to recover and be ready for their potential first game in the main stage on September 25.Venky Mysore, Kolkata’s chief executive, said in a statement that “the decision to play was completely left to Gautam and his doctors and hoped he would make a quick return to the game”.Kolkata will also be without the services of Eoin Morgan – who is due to have shoulder surgery – and potentially, Brad Haddin, who will be playing in Australia’s third Test against Sri Lanka which begins in Colombo on September 16.

Danish Kaneria’s long battle to gain clearance from the PCB will continue, as he has now been asked by the Sindh High Court to produce a transcript of the Essex police inquiry that cleared him of criminal charges in a spot-fixing case last year. Kaneria had filed a petition in the court against his continued non-clearance by the PCB for selection for the Pakistan team.The court had summoned the Pakistan board to explain Kaneria’s exclusion, and after PCB legal advisor Taffazul Rizvi submitted a reply, the case has been adjourned to August 18, with Kaneria being asked to consult a British lawyer to obtain the transcript of the Essex police inquiry and submit it to the PCB’s integrity committee. “The PCB cannot select Kaneria in the team until and unless he gets clearance from the integrity committee,” Rizvi told . “The court has ordered Kaneria to get another opinion from his British lawyer and submit it before the integrity committee and the matter will then be decided.”Kaneria had been questioned by police in relation to an investigation believed to centre around a Pro40 Essex win against Durham and spot-betting on wides and no-balls during the match, but was not charged.Since that incident, Kaneria has been involved in a long battle with the PCB to clear his name for selection, appearing before its integrity committee, but has failed to convince it despite providing communications from the ICC, Essex police and the county that he was not found guilty of corruption.After the court’s latest order, Kaneria said he would follow the procedure though he was growing impatient. “I will obey the orders, but the delay is frustrating for me as I want to play for my country, which is my right after being cleared by the Essex police,” Kaneria told .Pakistan’s next series is a tour of Zimbabwe, which begins on August 28, leaving Kaneria in a race against time to get clearance before it begins.Kaneria was Pakistan’s first-choice Test spinner for nearly seven years from 2003, and has played 61 Tests, taking 261 wickets. Opener Aftab Alam anchored Habib Bank Limited’s chase of 235 on the final day with a patient century, amid support from captain Hasan Raza and Fahad Masood, to set up their first title win since 1977-78. Pakistan International Airlines required seven wickets on the final day but Alam’s determined innings helped tilt the scales from a precarious 56 for 3 on the third day to inflict on the opposition their first defeat in the competition in a game that mattered the most.Alam and Masood, the two overnight batsmen, consolidated the advantage their team had enjoyed at stumps the previous day, working the ball around comfortably for singles and finding the occasional boundary. In the morning session, Alam collected fours through fine leg, and then drove Shoaib Malik to the deep-cover fence. Masood was less fluent, but the steady flow of ones and twos thwarted PIA’s hopes of putting HBL’s batsmen under pressure. Their only hope was to pick up wickets, and urgently given HBL were progressing smoothly. They got a lucky break when Masood, aiming for a single to mid-off, was caught short of his crease by a direct hit that made it 146 for 4. The elation, though, was short lived.The scoring rate actually picked up with the arrival of Raza to the crease, and Alam continued to be ruthless when an opportunity was on offer. Raza kicked off his innings in streaky fashion, with an edge to the third-man boundary, but got into his groove soon after, punching Anwar Ali through the covers. Alam eventually ceded floor to Raza, giving him most of the strike and reaching his fifth first-class century in the process. He had batted in the middle order in the first innings and his promotion to the top in the second proved decisive.Raza, meanwhile, stepped up by targeting the seamer Aizaz Cheema, striking him for two fours and then tore into him with victory in sight, reaching his half-century with three boundaries in four balls. Though Alam had been dismissed by then, Raza’s attack hastened PIA’s downfall. Kamran Hussain finished the game off in the 79th over, driving Kamran Sajid to score the winning runs.The day-night game was an unprecedented event in Pakistan first-class cricket and was not without controversy. The match was hotly-contested with lots of chatter between the players and even accusations of ball-tampering; the trigger for the uneasy atmosphere on the field, though, appeared to have been poor umpiring for a major part of the game.
