SL, Pakistan look to mend batting chinks in dead rubber

Match facts

March 4, 2016
Start time 1930 local (1330 GMT)Mohammad Amir’s form in the tournament has been one of the few positives for Pakistan•AFP

Big Picture

With tails between their legs, two of the better nations in T20 history prepare to play out a dead rubber, two years after they had contested the final of this tournament. Their routes to this match were similar enough. Both teams had more trouble defeating the UAE than expected. They were each floored by a clinical Bangladesh side, and were comfortably bested by India, despite a few heartening performances in those games. They are also ailed by roughly similar concerns. The openers are a worry for Pakistan – none having hit more than 11 in the tournament. Sri Lanka have begun to fear that Tillakaratne Dilshan’s form may not recover over the next few weeks, and his partner – Dinesh Chandimal – is an improvised opener in any case. Pakistan have a few bright sparks in that top order – which features Umar Akmal, Sarfraz Ahmed and Shoaib Malik – but against the top teams, they have only come good one-by-one, rather than as a collective. In Mohammad Amir at least, this game will feature the bowler that has delivered the best spells in the tournament. In Rangana Herath, Nuwan Kulasekara and Angelo Mathews, Sri Lanka have the most experienced attack. Both teams will look to their bowlers to set the standard, as the batsmen attempt to sort themselves out.

Form guide

Pakistan: LWLLL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Sri Lanka: LLWLL

Watch out for

Nuwan Kulasekara has had an up-and-down tournament, having made key breakthroughs against India and UAE, though he proved expensive against Bangladesh. He has said goodbye to his inswing over the past year. This is like if Coke stopped making its cola. Kulasekara has found the means to make profits off his supplementary products though, finding outside edges with the ball that straightens on the deck, and bowling cheap overs at the death. If he can take early wickets again in this match, he will go into the World T20 with some confidence, inswing or not. With team-mates sinking around him, Sarfraz Ahmed tried to salvage something out of Pakistan’s innings against Bangladesh, on Wednesday. Batting unusually high in the order, Sarfraz scored 58 not out off 42 balls. Though coaches have not always been willing to let Sarfraz come in early, his limited-overs statistics do suggest he is of more use to Pakistan in the top five, than lower down. As Pakistan attempt to lock down their batting roles for the World T20, another success higher in the order might guarantee Sarfraz a place there.

Teams news

Coach Waqar Younis said Pakistan were likely to test their bench strength in this match. Allrounder Imad Wasim and bowlers Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Nawaz have a chance of playing. There is a chance Shahid Afridi could be rested.Pakistan (probable): 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Khurram Manzoor, 3 Sharjeel Khan, 4 Sarfraz Ahmed, 5 Umar Akmal, 6 Shoaib Malik, 7 Imad Wasim/ Shahid Afridi (capt.), 8 Wahab Riaz, 9 Mohammad Nawaz, 10 Mohammad Amir, 11 Mohammad IrfanSri Lanka know what they will get from Rangana Herath, so they may take the chance to give legspinner Jeffrey Vandersay a run. As this match is a dead rubber, they are unlikely to risk Lasith Malinga’s knee.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Dinesh Chandimal, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Shehan Jayasuriya, 4 Chamara Kapugedara, 5 Angelo Mathews, 6 Milinda Siriwardana, 7 Dasun Shanaka, 8 Thisara Perera, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Rangana Herath/Jeffrey Vandersay, 11 Dushmantha Chameera

Pitch and conditions

The weather is expected to be good for this match and, given the teams, another low-scoring game is on the cards.

Stats and trivia

  • Sri Lanka lost 0-2 to Pakistan in the teams’ most recent T20 series, in Sri Lanka last year.
  • Sarfraz Ahmed averages 59 when batting in the top five, from five innings there so far. His overall average is 29 after 11 innings.

Quotes

“If you are 34 for 4 after ten overs, you can’t win a match. Our bowling has bailed us out on a few occasions, but if we bat like this, we can’t win. Both our openers are making comebacks, so they are under pressure, and the pitches have been tough. If we had adapted well to these conditions, it would have been good, because the pitches in India should be better for batsmen.”

Western Australia cruised to a seven-wicket win at the No 1 Sports Ground after New South Wales were bundled out for 97 in their second innings. New South Wales, who began the day precariously placed at 5 for 65, failed to capitalise on their first-innings advantage, as they added only 32 more runs on the final day, with none of their lower-order batsmen putting up a resistance. Ashton Agar was the pick of the bowlers, collecting 4 for 22, while David Moody chipped in with 3 for 22.It meant Western Australia needed just 143 for victory, and despite losing two early wickets, a 98-run partnership between Michael Klinger (46) and Adam Voges (54*) guided the team home in 52 overs.

Big wins for Delhi, Punjab

Three-wicket hauls from Sandeep Sharma, Rajwinder Singh and Sarabjit Ladda helped Punjab bowl Haryana out for 200, setting up the team’s 120-run win in Patiala. Chasing a formidable 321 for victory, Haryana, who began the day precariously placed at 26 for 3, were dealt an early blow as their opener Avi Barot was dismissed three overs in. Sachin Rana kept the score ticking with an 134-ball 86, but Haryana’s next highest contribution was Joginder Sharma’s 36 all the way down at No.10, as Punjab kept picking up wickets at regular intervals. Sandeep was the pick of the bowlers, collecting 3 for 30, while Rajwinder and Ladda took 3 for 54 and 3 for 76, as Haryana were bundled out inside 61 overs. Yuvraj Singh was named the Man of the Match for his second-innings century.
ScorecardDelhi needed just 36 overs on day four to complete a nine-wicket win against Saurashtra at the Roshanara Club Ground. Following on in their second innings, Saurashtra began the day at 163 for 4, still 62 runs adrift. It did not get any better for them, as Divyaraj Chauhan was dismissed two overs into the day, and their top scorer Sheldon Jackson (51) followed suit six overs later. Delhi then did not take too long to clean up the tail, as Navdeep Saini (3 for 27) and Sumit Narwal (3 for 41) both collected three-fors to bowl the team out for 240, meaning that the hosts needed just 16 for victory. Delhi lost Unmukt Chand in the second over of the chase, but Gautam Gambhir, who had put his team in a dominant position with a first-innings ton, and Varun Sood helped the team breeze home in 5.3 overs.
ScorecardAn unbeaten hundred from Robin Bist helped Rajasthan defy Gujarat’s push towards victory in Jaipur. When Ishwar Chaudhary had Deepak Chahar caught behind in the 101st over of Rajasthan’s innings, Gujarat were left with two wickets to get in 2.1 overs. Bist and Pankaj Singh managed to survive those 13 balls, and Gujarat had to be satisfied with three points. Chaudhary finished with four wickets in the innings and eight in the match.Set 412 to win, Rajasthan began the final day on a sticky 34 for 3. Their situation improved thanks to an 83-run fourth-wicket stand between Bist and Ashok Menaria, who made a brisk 64-ball 41 before falling to the medium-pace of Kushang Patel. Gujarat then endured a long wait for their next wicket, as Bist and Rajesh Bishnoi batted a ball short of 50 overs to put on 115.When Bishnoi fell for a 139-ball 35, Rajasthan had only 17.3 overs to bat out with five wickets in hand. They wobbled, losing Arjit Gupta, Dishant Yagnik and Chahar in quick succession, but Bist held firm to see them through to safety. Bist finished not out on 124, having spent over six hours at the crease and faced 293 balls.
ScorecardNatraj Behera scored a patient 74 as Odisha claimed a point against Maharashtra in Pune. Having taken a 60-run first-innings lead on the third day, Maharashtra needed to bowl Odisha out cheaply if they were to force a win, but they only managed to take five wickets before the teams agreed to a draw at the start of the final hour.Resuming at 1 for 0, Odisha lost Girjia Rout in the fourth over of the morning. His partner Natraj, though, stayed at the crease till the 65th over of the day, by which time his team was well on its way to safety. Natraj received useful support from each of the middle-order batsmen, and put on 42 with Niranjan Behera for the second wicket, 47 with Anurag Sarangi for the third, and 53 with Biplab Samantray for the fourth. Left-arm spinner Akshay Darekar was Maharashtra’s most successful bowler, picking up three wickets in 22 overs.

Michael Clarke has quit the Sydney Thunder due to Australia’s hectic international summer schedule for this season

Michael Clarke has quit the Sydney Thunder due to Australia’s hectic international summer schedule for this season, declaring that he would prefer the club offer a contract to a younger player. Clarke has been part of the Thunder squad for the past two seasons but was never any more than a nominal presence useful in the club’s marketing, given that the BBL clashes with Australia’s Test and ODI season. Not only is he yet to play a game for the Thunder, he is yet to make his debut in Australian domestic T20 cricket, having not played the format for New South Wales before the BBL was introduced. Clarke said with Australia’s Test series against India and then the one-day tri-series with India and England occupying the December-January period, he was unlikely to debut this summer.”Having looked at the fixture list for the upcoming summer it became apparent that my opportunities to play for the Thunder would be extremely limited,” Clarke said.”I think it is in the best interests of the club if I make myself unavailable for selection this season and allow the Thunder the chance to offer a contract to a younger player who would really benefit from the opportunity. I will continue to support the club and monitor the situation in future seasons regarding availability.”The struggling Thunder won only one match last season but that was an improvement on the previous year, when they had lost all eight games. They will be coached this season by Paddy Upton, who was named this week as the replacement for Chandika Hathurusingha.

Verma questions ICC's silence on Srinivasan

Aditya Verma, the Cricket Association of Bihar secretary whose petition following the IPL corruption scandal has led to an upheaval in Indian cricket, has questioned the ICC’s silence over the scandal and its decision to allow BCCI’s stepped-aside president N Srinivasan to attend the ICC Executive board meeting in Dubai last month. In an email that Verma claims to have sent to all the ICC office-bearers, he has expressed his anguish at the ICC’s silence “on the issue of the IPL scam”. “Cricket is a great sport and it’s the duty of ICC and BCCI to maintain the credibility of cricket and players,” the letter stated. The letter has also questioned the decision to let Srinivasan attend the ICC Board meeting in Dubai last month despite Srinivasan in an “affidavit filed to the court had said he was stepping aside as the BCCI president till the probe concludes”.Verma had filed a petition in the Bombay High Court last July questioning the legality of a two-member panel appointed by the BCCI to inquire the allegations against Gurunath Meiyappan, Srinivasan’s son-in-law, his team Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals and one of its co-owners Raj Kundra. The matter has escalated to the Supreme Court stepping in to initiate a cleansing act in Indian cricket.During the last hearing of the case last week, CAB’s lawyers requested the court to bar Srinivasan, who is supposed to take over as the ICC chairman in July, from attending ICC meetings. Though the court didn’t entertain the plea during its last hearing, the apex court has decided to ask Justice Mukul Mudgal – whose earlier report concluded that Meiyappan was a CSK official and had recommended further recommendations against 13 personalities involved in cricket – to continue the probe into the allegations. The court is likely to issue an interim order in the coming week.
