Leeds: Farke must move Gray aside to unleash "integral" £35k-p/w battler

Leeds United return to action in the Championship this afternoon as they travel away from Elland Road to take on Norwich City in Norfolk.

The Whites have won three of their last four league matches ahead of this clash but have had a two-week break, thanks to international duty, since their last game.

Daniel Farke, who is returning to his former club and Carrow Road for the first time since his exit in 2021, oversaw a 2-1 win over Bristol City last time out but could be forced into making changes to his starting XI.

What's the latest Leeds injury news?

The German head coach has revealed that Wilfried Gnonto is in contention to feature in the squad after recovering from injury. However, Junior Firpo still needs time and Djed Spence is a couple of weeks away from being ready to return to full training.

He also suggested that Archie Gray could suffer from burnout due to the volume of games the Leeds ace has played at club and international level, after the teenage gem started three matches for England U19s during the break.

The academy graduate was limited to a recovery session instead of full first-team training on Thursday and Farke could rest him for this clash to avoid fatigue or an injury issue.

With this in mind, the ex-Norwich boss must unleash Luke Ayling from the start this afternoon in place of Gray, who lined up at right-back against the Robins.

Should Ayling start against Norwich?

The veteran defender has been a solid and reliable performer for the Whites so far this season and his form suggests that he is an excellent option to come in for the 17-year-old gem today.

Ayling has already started eight Championship games throughout the 2023/24 campaign, but was on the bench against Bristol City, and has showcased his excellent defensive capabilities.

Leeds defender Luke Ayling.

Journalist Phil Hay once hailed the former Yeovil Town prospect as "integral" for Leeds and that remains the case when you consider the defensive impact that he has had this term.

The 32-year-old battler has made 2.7 tackles per game at Championship level and Ethan Ampadu (2.3) is the only other Whites player with more than 1.9 per match.

Ayling, who has made 3.6 tackles and interceptions per clash in total, has also created 1.2 chances per outing for his teammates, which is more than any other defender within the squad.

These statistics suggest that the English enforcer has been superb when called upon this season due to his ability to both cut out opposition attacks whilst also creating chances at the other end.

The experienced ball-winner has the quality to make multiple defensive interventions per game and can pop up with moments in the final third to make things happen for his side on the ball.

Therefore, Farke must unleash the £35k-per-week stopper from the start and move Gray aside against the Canaries today. It would provide the teenage starlet with an opportunity to rest and avoid fatigue without weakening the side, as shown by Ayling's aforementioned statistics.

Joe Root will bounce back from T20 dropping – Paul Farbrace

‘Runs are the currency’, says assistant coach, as clamour for white-ball batting berths hots up

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Jul-2018Paul Farbrace, England’s interim coach, has backed Joe Root to bounce back strongly after being dropped for the series-deciding T20I against India at Bristol on Sunday, but reiterated that “runs are the currency” by which all of England’s batsmen need to be judged in the current clamour for white-ball berths.Despite being acknowledged as England’s finest multi-format batsman, Root found himself under pressure following scores of 35, 0 and 9 in his three previous T20 innings against Australia and India. He made way for the return of Ben Stokes in Bristol after Alex Hales had made his own place in the side secure with a match-winning half-century at Cardiff on Friday.Root’s omission would have seem unthinkable two years ago, when he was the glue in the England T20 line-up that came so close to victory in the World T20 in India, and prior to the series Farbrace insisted Root was a fixture in the side. However, Farbrace – who has been standing in for the head coach, Trevor Bayliss, during the T20I series – said that Root remained a shoo-in to play in the first ODI against India at Trent Bridge on Thursday.”Every player goes through a period where you either find it tough or you’re left out the side,” said Farbrace. “We all know that [Joe’s] response will be to work harder, try harder and score more runs – that’s the nature of him.”I’m sure he was bitterly disappointed to be left out because he wants to play every game for England and he wants to show he’s a high quality player in all forms of the game, but we all know Joe very well – he’ll be spurred on by that and he’ll do all he can to make sure he’s ready come Thursday’s game at Trent Bridge.”Root’s role in T20 cricket has come under inadvertent scrutiny in recent months, partly as a consequence of his huge importance to England’s fortunes in the longer formats. In the aftermath of a gruelling Ashes campaign, he was rested during England’s T20 tri-series in Australia and New Zealand in February, and also missed out on an IPL deal after being overlooked in this year’s auction. And, now in the aftermath of a T20 series decider when even a target of 200 was shown to be some 20-30 runs short, Root’s value – as a man who can keep the strike rotating and soak up the pressure moments of an innings – has been undermined by the sheer muscularity required to put a defendable total on the board, at least on the sort of flat deck that was served up at Bristol.”It is important in low-scoring games on tough wickets, you need people who can manipulate the strike, who can play spin bowling well, and can keep you in tight games,” said Farbrace. “That’s a skill that Joe has – he has the ability to hit boundaries. He might not have the raw power of a Stokes or a Bairstow but he has strong cricket shots, even in 20-over cricket, which will get you your reward.”In the game at Cardiff, a low-scoring game, the idea of him going in when he did [at No.3] was to rotate the strike, knock it around and get you close to winning the game. In the end, he got out playing the sweep shot – which is fine, because that’s a shot that he plays exceptionally well.”I still think, and I genuinely believe it, that if England are to be successful in T20 cricket over the next couple of years leading into the World Cup, Joe Root will play a magnificent and big part in that. He’s our best player – a fantastic player in all forms of the game.”Yes, he hasn’t got any runs in the last couple of games and, yes, that does make you vulnerable in any side. Runs are your currency – that’s what you’re selected on. It’s the same for bowlers – it’s about wickets and economy rates in T20 cricket.”Despite the disappointment of losing the series decider, Farbrace said that England would take confidence from their Cardiff win into next week’s ODI series, which arguably has far more significance for the two teams leading into next year’s World Cup, and which England will begin as the No.1-ranked side in the world.”It was really important that we showed that we could learn very quickly from the first game and we showed that we are capable of beating India in tough conditions,” said Farbrace. “It will be a brilliant series – they’re a magnificent side, they’ve got a lot of experience, a high level of skill, and you can see that they’re definitely here to get stuck into the challenge.”That’s the way that you’d expect all of [Virat] Kohli’s teams to play, so we’re going to have to play extremely well to win it.”

Leeds United: Farke’s "tenacious" player "would love" new Elland Road deal

Still early days in the Daniel Farke era at Leeds United, the former Norwich City boss is still getting to know his squad, and has only just guided them into form, winning three of their last five Championship games. We are now beginning to find out the manager's preferred side, and any player outside of that may just begin to worry about their future at Elland Road.

If the Whites do earn promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, some big decisions could be needed from not only the management, but the players, too, particularly those struggling for minutes. And that could include one particular youngster, who reportedly wants to sign a new contract.

Leeds United contract news

The international break came at a frustrating time for Leeds, given that they were finally showing signs of life in England's second tier and now momentum is halted. On their return, Farke's side square off against his former club Norwich City in a crucial promotion six-pointer – these are the games that Leeds should be winning if they want to mark themselves out as promotion favourites.

Meanwhile, off the pitch, a report has claimed that Jamie Shackleton wants to sign a new contract at Elland Road, but an exit hasn't been ruled out. Graham Smyth wrote in The Yorkshire Evening Post: "Shackleton would clearly love nothing more than to remain at Leeds beyond the end of his current contract next summer but if the Whites are to be promoted will he play in the Premier League?

“At some point, if Shackleton wants to be as ever-present in a team as Phillips was at Leeds prior to his exit, then following his old pal out the door might be a necessary step."

How has Shackleton performed for Leeds this season?

As things stand, Shackleton's game time is inconsistent at Elland Road. The midfielder has featured in seven of Leeds' 11 Championship fixtures this season, starting in six, and that could get worse if the Yorkshire club earn promotion back to the Premier League this season. At 24-years-old, too, he is at an important stage of his career, when minutes on the pitch matter more than anything.

When Leeds were in the top flight last season, of course, Shackleton was on loan at Millwall, where he was a consistent starter. Eventually, Farke may just fall back on his midfielder's Championship experience to help his side, especially given the fact that he previously admitted his love for the 24-year-old.

When at his best, the Leeds man has earned plenty of praise, including from Danny Mills at the start of his career, who told Football Insider: "Shackleton has done very well when he’s played for Leeds. He’s quick, tenacious, drives forward with the ball and can see a pass. He can slot into the midfield area next season, no problem. If you have him and Kalvin Phillips, you need someone creative alongside them.”

With that said, whilst it remains to be seen whether Shackleton puts pen to paper on a new deal, with his current contract expiring next summer, his focus will be on earning a consistent place in Farke's side.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Hayes is set to leave Chelsea to become USWNT coach at the end of the season but remains in a pitched battle for the WSL title, as they sit level on points with Manchester City at the top of the table and three ahead of their next opponents, Arsenal. Chelsea can still win the quadruple this season, and Cuthbert has taken the time to credit Hayes' dedication, insisting that she is an inspiration.

    WHAT CUTHBERT SAID

Cuthbert told the : “Emma works tirelessly for what she wants to achieve. “She dedicates her life to it, but she makes sure that when she celebrates, she does it big, and I'm no different. So I think that's one thing that I've certainly learned from her: never [apologise] for wearing your heart on your sleeve, because it can reward you in weird and wonderful ways. A quadruple – wow, that's mad! We really want to do it for Emma. She'll love nothing more than leaving a legacy and a culture that's built on winning, and it's up to us to do it. The main message is: less talk, more action.”

She added: “Emma has done a lot for me. I feel like I behave more like Emma, like a mini-Emma. She is quite direct in her actions, likes to get things done, won't mess around, and I think I have become more like that. I see that when I go away to the national team [Scotland], that I start having behaviours like Emma. But you are a by-product of who you surround yourself with. Her and her staff have driven the whole culture in Chelsea to be one club, and for that I am eternally grateful.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Hayes has enjoyed an almost unprecedented level of success since joining Chelsea, winning six WSL titles, as well as five Women's FA Cups and two FA Women's League Cups. So impressive has her career been, she was awarded an MBE in 2022 for her services to association football.

Newcastle can solve Tonali conundrum by signing "incredible" star who’s like Rice

Newcastle United's meteoric rise has continued into this campaign and Eddie Howe's side look well-equipped to throw down the gauntlet on the Champions League spots once more, having qualified for Europe's elite competition last term.

The Magpies are currently six points off fourth-place Liverpool and have given a solid account of themselves in the Champions League, with the highlight so far being their 4-1 demolition of Paris Saint-Germain.

While their prospects domestically and in Europe are looking prosperous, the Toon have been hit with some bad luck off the field and their £55m summer signing, Sandro Tonali, is currently awaiting a ten-month suspension after breaching betting rules in Italy.

Following this devastating news for the club, Newcastle need to use the January transfer window to bolster their midfield options and fill the void that he'll leave behind in the middle of the park.

Several names have been touted, including Scott McTominay, Kalvin Phillips and Conor Gallagher, while Ruben Neves has also been linked with a move back to England after joining Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal for £47m in the summer.

Newcastle transfer news – Ruben Neves interest

According to talkSPORT, Newcastle are considering a loan move for Ruben Neves to replace Tonali in January.

The Portuguese maestro is currently plying his trade for Al Hilal, the club owned by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), who of course, also own a controlling stake in the Magpies.

The Premier League giants could use this situation to their advantage by luring the former Wolverhampton Wanderers man back to England, both fixing their need for a world-class operator and doing it in a cost-efficient way.

Former Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves.

In many ways, targeting the 44-cap international makes sense as it plugs a temporary void in central midfield and saves them from splashing the cash on someone else.

The loan market could also be a favourable avenue for the club as the reported financial fair play (FFP) restrictions could prevent Newcastle from signing a permanent replacement for the 23-year-old in the winter window.

Indeed, it could be a wise decision from Howe to loan Neves, who displays similar attributes to the former, and then return him once Tonali's ban is up at the end of next season.

How Sandro Tonali compares to Ruben Neves

Lauded as "incredible" by former Wolves teammate Hugo Bueno, Neves would supply Newcastle with the requisite Premier League pedigree and exceptional technical attributes that could see him become a revelation at St James' Park.

For six successful years and 253 appearances at Molineux, he was the conductor in their midfield, dictating possession with his phenomenal passing range while displaying his ability to serve up the spectacular, becoming widely recognised for his outrageous technique and superb ball-striking abilities.

In the Premier League last term, the 26-year-old's performances were similar in profile to the likes of Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo, according to FBref, having also showcased his defensive nous by placing in the top 19% against his positional peers for tackles in the attacking third, top 14% for interceptions, top 4% for shots blocked and top 3% for clearances.

Tonali was signed to have an impact at the other end of the field which means his defensive attributes fall short, ranking within the bottom 16% across Europe's top five leagues in the past year for interceptions, bottom 18% for aerials won and bottom 29% for blocks.

Sandro Tonali

By contrast, the Italian's attacking attributes, including his exceptional vision, ability to drive forward and provide telling quality, have all seen Tonali rank high, placing in the top 21% for progressive passes, top 13% for assists and top 9% for key passes.

Although Neves, who is valued at £26.2m (€30m) as per Football Observatory, can't eclipse the former AC Milan midfielder for the aforementioned statistics, his quality defensive attributes paint a picture of an individual who could further solidify a Newcastle defence that ranks third for expected goals against (9.79) and fifth for goals conceded (11).

Australia A fight for survival after Bharat ton

India A add 205 for last five wickets to open up a sizable lead to give hosts chance of a series-levelling win

The Report by Varun Shetty in Alur10-Sep-2018Andhra Cricket Association

India A batted Australia A into a corner on the third day of the second unofficial Test in Alur. They lead of 159 came on the back of KS Bharat’s 106, and his various partnerships with the lower order that meant India made 205 for the last five wickets, finishing eventually with 505 in reply to Australia’s 346. Bharat’s century was India’s first of the series, and the innings was at its peak during his eight-wicket stand of 113 with Kuldeep Yadav, who batted 112 balls for his 52.The pair were in full control after they’d both been dropped off part-time legspinner Marnus Labuschagne when the lead was slim. Kuldeep then begun dominating the stand, looking calm and assured as Australia switched their bowlers around constantly. While the innings was studded with boundaries, it was an aggressive one in approach, with the footwork sorted the whole way through against pace and spin.It gave Bharat the license to play the boundary strokes at the other end and he picked up 12 fours and a six during his forage. Bharat’s most productive strokes were the hook and the cover drive, both of which were a consequence of Australia’s struggle to hold up a constant strategy. The seamers, particularly Brendan Doggett, were all over the place against Bharat and on a slow pitch, he cashed in on their offerings.Against spin, he was more content playing with a straight bat, often in defence, and rarely got out of the crease to manufacture shots. There wasn’t much need for it in any case, with Australia’s spread out fields offering many easy run-scoring avenues. This was also the case when Shubman Gill had got going in the first session. Gill, the overnight batsman alongside India A captain Shreyas Iyer, had a much easier start to the day than should have been, considering the that the same bowlers – Mitchell Marsh and Mitchell Swepson – had troubled them in the last 30 minutes on Sunday. The pair had even come out to overcast, cold conditions, which offered the Australian bowlers more than they had got on a blazing Sunday. But they were barely troubled, with Swepson struggling to land the ball from around the wicket. Many full tosses down leg side were put away, including one that was ramped by Iyer over the long leg boundary, and when he did finally start landing the ball, the umpires deemed that he was bowling a negative line and penalised him. Marsh did end up slanting one in to beat Iyer and hit his stumps, but Australia’s day would be filled with more such peculiar moments. In front of a considerably bigger home crowd than had watched during the weekend, the Australians came apart slowly, with fumbles and extras, and were even penalised for having three fielders behind the popping crease on the leg side at one point. The start of that decline began with Gill’s exquisite wrists that aided his flowing drives, but were especially impressive as he got on the back foot to manipulate the square field on the off side. Australia operated with one slip all day, and Gill used that open side of the field to full effect. But the 19-year-old batsman didn’t capitalise on his fluid start, and was bowled playing inside the line of a Chris Remain delivery with India still 46 behind and a fragile lower order exposed. K Gowtham undid the pressure though – as Bharat endured an anxious start – and his confident batting brought India five runs away from parity. By then, Bharat settled in and shepherded the lower order.Australia were given only three overs of seam bowling to play as they came out to play the last hour, and the relentless intensity of India’s spinners produced wickets off stark variety. Kurtis Patterson got into his shell and was bowled leaving an arm ball from Gowtham. At the other end, Renshaw’s attacking strategy produced a pictureesque straight six against Nadeem, but some sweeps later, he top-edged one to a diving Deepak Chahar at short fine leg.

Spurs: Levy "looking at" signing two Premier League defenders for Tottenham

Tottenham and chairman Daniel Levy by extension are "looking at" signing two Premier League defenders as they scour for new centre-backs.

Who could Spurs sign in January?

The Lilywhites, despite some late rumoured attempts, ultimately failed to bring in a second centre-back after Micky van de Ven over the summer transfer window. Ange Postecoglou, in his bid to maintain Tottenham's very impressive start to the campaign, could look to January in an attempt to reinforce his options behind both van de Ven and Cristain Romero. Indeed, Galatasaray defender Victor Nelsson, Juventus star Gleison Bremer, Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly and Bayer Leverkusen star Edmond Tapsoba have all been linked in the last month or so.

Tottenham could also look to bring in a new striker to replace Harry Kane, with rumoured interest in both Ivan Toney and Santiago Gimenez. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's potential departure may prompted a move for Chelsea star Conor Gallagher too, according to recent reports, but there is an argument to be made that the north Londoners quite simply need defensive cover.

Trevoh Chalobah transfer update

According to a report this week, Spurs and Levy are said to have their eyes on two centre-backs from the Premier League. Indeed, alongside Kelly, Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah is another name turning heads at Tottenham. The latter, who is reportedly 90% likely to leave Stamford Bridge in January (Fabrizio Romano), apparently has admirers in north London.

Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah.

That is according to TEAMtalk, who say that Tottenham are "looking at" Kelly and Chalobah for the winter window. While not much else is added beyond this, either or both would come as brilliant options. The latter, who's versatile and can also play in midfield, has been praised for his attitude by former Chelsea boss Graham Potter.

"Very professional, very determined. He’s an impressive character, very focused on his football," said Potter last year to the Chelsea website.

"He’s a bit of a soldier. He’s played in all the games, we’re having some problems in terms of availability for players, but he’s stood up, stood in and he’s performing at a really good level."

Meanwhile, ex-Bournemouth boss Scott Parker holds Kelly in very high esteem, reveling over the defender's quality during their stint in the Championship.

"I think Lloyd Kelly has got the attributes and the ability to be a top Premier League centre-half," said Parker.

"And I think we are blessed and very, very lucky to have someone of his quality, really. You take players like Lloyd probably for granted in the sense of he makes things look very effortless and easy.

"And when you're watching him on the eye, you put someone else in that position of a ball down the side of a defender or one in the channel and getting in a foot race, he makes it look very easy, that you probably never appreciate it. The standards he sets are very high as a captain of this team and he's still so young in his age that he's got a lot on him.”

Somerset defiant as Azhar Ali holds up Surrey

ScorecardSurrey were frustrated by the weather and some stiff Somerset resistance on the third day of the Specsavers County Championship match at Taunton.By the close of a day limited to 49.3 overs by rain and bad light, the hosts had reached 168 for three in their second innings and required a further 171 to avoid an innings defeat. The match looked set to end inside three days when Somerset crashed to four for two, following on, Marcus Trescothick bagging a pair when dismissed by Morne Morkel for the second time in the match. But from there the home side found a resolve that was missing from their first innings batting, James Hildreth making 60 and Azhar Ali ending the day unbeaten on 61.Overnight rain prevented play getting underway until noon and when it did Somerset’s last wicket pair of Josh Davey and Jack Leach added 24 before Davey looked to drive Morkel and was caught at point by Mark Stoneman.Somerset were all out for 146 and were soon in trouble in their second innings as Morkel bowled Trescothick in the opening over.Tom Banton hit a sweet on-drive for four off Tom Curran, but was bowled next ball and the hosts’ brittle batting in recent games looked set to repeat itself.Surrey could sense victory in the air as Hildreth walked out to the middle to join Azhar. Bu the third-wicket pair gradually grew in confidence and in the 13th over a blistering cover drive from Azhar off Conor McKerr saw the Somerset 50 up.The duo continued to prosper and Hildreth went to his half-century with a single off McKerr to square cover, his runs coming off 68 balls with eight fours. Two overs later Azhar edged McKerr to the third-man boundary to bring up 100, shortly after which the players left the field for bad light for an early tea. When play resumed only two more balls were possible before the players went off again due to more bad light. After an hour, play resumed with the loss of 16 further overs. Tom Curran switched to the Somerset Pavilion End and in his second over made the vital breakthrough when he tempted Hildreth to drive at a fuller ball and edge to wicketkeeper Ben Foakes. In his next over Curran was unlucky to have Azhar put down at second slip when he was on 30. The former Pakistan captain survived and rode his luck, taking two boundaries to deep backward square leg in the young paceman’s next over.Azhar went to his fifty with a boundary to backward square off McKerr, having faced 97 balls and hit nine fours.Somerset had moved onto 168 for three off 42.2 overs, when bad light stopped play bringing an early close to proceedings, by which time Azhar and Tom Abell (21 not out) had added 61.
