How did Melbourne Renegades pull that off?

The BBL title looked sure to be heading to the green side of Melbourne but in an extraordinary chain events it unraveled before the Stars’ eyes and here’s how…

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Feb-201912.6 Stoinis b Boyce 39 (53 needed off 42 balls)
OUT, through him! Nice flight and dip on this from Boyce. Draws Stoinis in for a heave but gets it to land at a length and skid past the inside edge and hit leg stump. Lost his shape there13.3 Handscomb c Christian b Tremain 0 (52 needed off 39 balls)
OUT, oh hello. Handscomb with his contribution to the make-this-final-close cause. Runs down the pitch, seemingly to lift this over mid-off. But he’s swishing with all the grace of a cow tied to a revolving door, because this ball’s gotten big on him from a length. Slices and mid-off runs to the left to hold on16.6 Maddinson c Finch b Gurney 6 (38 needed off 18 balls)

OUT, White takes it at point! And he has no idea what sort of a celebration to pull out. Awkwardly lobs it up. Not sure anyone can comprehend this collapse right now. Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis back in West Indies' ODI squad

Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis are back in West Indies’ squad for the first two ODIs against England.Gayle last played for West Indies during the home ODI series against Bangladesh in July 2018, and had made himself unavailable for the tours of India and Bangladesh over the 2018-19 winter in order to play the Afghanistan Premier League and the T10 League. Lewis had withdrawn from the India tour for personal reasons, and missed the ODIs in Bangladesh as well, but returned to the squad for the T20Is.Nicholas Pooran, meanwhile, has been called up to the ODI squad for the first time. The left-hand batsman has impressed with his shotmaking ability in the eight T20Is he has played so far, most notably while cracking an unbeaten 53 off 25 balls against India in November.West Indies’ 14-member squad for the first two England ODIs features a number of other changes too. Captain Jason Holder is back, as expected, having made a successful return to the Test side after missing the Bangladesh tour with a shoulder injury. The offspinner Ashley Nurse returns too, having made a comeback to domestic first-class cricket after injuring his shoulder on the India tour.Batsmen Marlon Samuels, Chandrapaul Hemraj, Kieran Powell and Sunil Ambris, and allrounders Roston Chase and Carlos Brathwaite, who were all part of the ODI squad in Bangladesh, have been left out.Samuels, according to chairman of selectors Courtney Browne, is undergoing treatment on a knee injury. He also suggested that the fast bowler Shannon Gabriel could feature in the latter part of the series.”As we continue our Cricket World Cup preparations, the upcoming series against the top ranked ODI side is a great opportunity for us to gauge where we are as a team,” Browne said. “This allows us to identify any areas that need addressing relating to selection and also helps the coaching staff to fine tune their game strategy.”We welcome the return of Chris Gayle who missed the last two series and Ashley Nurse from injury. We are pleased to introduce Nicholas Pooran to the ODI cricket for the first time. He is clearly a young player with undoubted talent and we believe he can add value to our middle order. Shannon Gabriel remains very much in our World Cup plans but with a heavy workload expected in the Test series he will be considered for selection later in the ODI series.”The ODI series against England begins on February 20 at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.West Indies squad: Jason Holder (capt), Fabian Allen, Devendra Bishoo, Darren Bravo, Chris Gayle, Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope, Evin Lewis, Ashley Nurse, Keemo Paul, Nicholas Pooran, Rovman Powell, Kemar Roach, Oshane Thomas

Journalist shares likelier Luiz alternative for Arsenal with news on Onana

Arsenal appear much more likely to sign one club's high-earning midfielder over the heavily-linked Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz, according to reports.

Edu eyeing new midfielder in January

As per widespread rumours in the English press and beyond, signing a new central midfielder in January appears a distinct possibility as sporting director Edu Gaspar makes winter transfer plans.

Arteta lining up Arsenal bid for their new Ozil in “wonderful” £34m talent

Mikel Arteta wants to add a future star to his side this January.

ByTom Lever Dec 28, 2023

Thomas Partey has been unreliable with injuries this season, and if fit by early next month, will travel to represent Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations. Meanwhile, both Jorginho and Mohamed Elneny are set to leave when their contracts expire next summer.

These factors make the need for a new man in the middle of the park all the more important next month. Villa's Luiz is reported to be a dream target for Arsenal (Fabrizio Romano), but Unai Emery's side have been on an upward trajectory this season and may not be willing to sell one of their key players.

Arsenal do have alternative options, with Monaco ace Youssouf Fofana attracting interest from Edu ahead of January. Another interesting name is Everton star Amadou Onana, who has made 15 Premier League appearances as a colossal presence in the Toffees engine room.

The Belgium international is apparently a target for Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, as he looks to provide midfield depth and strengthen his side's charge for a first league title in 20 years.

Arsenal more likely to sign Onana

According to a report by journalist Simon Collings of The Evening Standard, who detailed all of Arsenal's "possible" signings in January, Onana making a move to the Emirates is indeed plausible.

Indeed, it is believed Arsenal could have "more luck" signing Onana than Luiz next month, with Villa looking set to dig their heels in over the Brazilian.

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

Little else is added beyond that, but we believe the £100,000-per-week ace (SpotRac) would be a sure-fire fit for the Gunners. Standing at a colossal 6 foot 4, Onana has been praised by former Belgium boss Roberto Martinez, who hailed his leadership qualities and "unique" traits as a player.

“Really exciting footballer,” said Martinez to Sky Sports.

“I know that sometimes when we speak about players, it’s very difficult to measure their potential. I think we are talking about a 20-year-old boy, who is probably one of the most talented at that age in European football, and that’s how excited we are in Belgium.

“I think it would be a shame if we speak only about his technical and tactical abilities. I think this footballer is quite unique in the way he is as a character; he is a leader, even as a young man, he is affecting others in the dressing room. He has got this incredibly maturity that is not normal to have at such a young age.”

Chelsea titan who won 11 duels was Pochettino’s true hero over Gusto vs Palace

Chelsea got back to winning ways on Wednesday night as they secured a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.

The Blues took the lead through Mykhaylo Mudryk in the first half as the Ukraine international converted from close range but Michael Olise smartly equalised with a near post finish just before the break.

Mauricio Pochettino's side then sealed the win late on as a VAR review awarded them a penalty for a foul on Noni Madueke, who stepped up to convert the spot-kick.

Malo Gusto put in a fantastic display at right-back, and left-back later on in the game, but the manager's true hero on the night was central midfielder Moises Caicedo.

Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo.

Malo Gusto's performance against Palace in numbers

Lee Dixon hailed his performance as "superb" during the Amazon Prime live coverage of the match and it was a fair analysis of the talented gem's showing.

The French dynamo, who started the clash on the right back of the back four, played a pivotal role in the opening goal with a fantastic turn on the half-way line before racing forward all the way to the left wing to slot a perfect pass to Mudryk to make it 1-0.

He made two key passes in total and completed 94% (91/97) of his attempted passes throughout his 90 minutes on the pitch, on the right and the left.

It was, however, a mixed bag from Gusto on the defensive side of the game. The full-back did make three tackles and three interceptions but was also dribbled past four times and lost eight of his 13 ground duels.

Whereas, Caicedo was impressive in and out of possession throughout the match for Chelsea as he showcased his quality in the middle of the park.

Caicedo's performance against Palace in numbers

The summer signing from Brighton & Hove Albion set his stall out early with a couple of crunching challenges and kept that tempo up all night.

He won an outstanding 11 of his 15 physical contests throughout the clash, which included nine of his 13 ground duels and both of his aerial contests.

The 22-year-old battler made five tackles and one interception in total and was only dribbled past once by an opposition player in midfield.

His defensive statistics show that the Ecuador international was imperious for Pochettino to ensure that he cut out promising Palace attacks at source to win back possession for Chelsea, which then allowed them to control the game.

Caicedo also remained reliable on the ball to go along with his superb defending. The young whiz completed 94% (79/84) of his attempted passes from 102 touches of the ball and found a teammate with all five of his long passes.

This shows that the former Seagulls star was composed in possession and rarely gave the ball away cheaply to the opposition, which allowed Chelsea to constantly probe and cause problems at the top end of the pitch.

Therefore, Caicedo was Pochettino's true hero on the night, over Gusto, as he used his skills on and off the ball to produce a complete display in midfield.

Escalação do Corinthians: Mancini mantém mistério; veja provável time

As dúvidas moram no meio e no ataque.

A provável escalação do Corinthians é: Cássio; Fagner, Bruno Méndez, Gil e Fábio Santos; Xavier (Camacho, Roni ou Ramiro) e Cantillo; Gustavo Silva, Araos e Otero (Lucas Piton); Léo Natel (Jô).

Corinthians e Flamengo se enfrentam neste domingo, às 16h, no Maracanã. Atualmente o Timão está na oitava colocação do Brasileirão-2020 com 49 pontos e uma partida a menos. Serão quatro jogos até o fim do campeonato.

Siddle admits lack of cricket has been tough

His appearance for Adelaide Strikers in their heavy defeat against Sydney Sixers was just his seventh outing since the end of the November

Being part of Australia’s Test squad this season has been a double-edged sword for Peter Siddle, putting him closer to adding to his 64 caps but also limiting his time actually playing.Siddle’s appearance for Adelaide Strikers in their heavy defeat against Sydney Sixers at the SCG was just his seventh outing since the end of the November – four have come in the Big Bash and three in the ODI series against India as he ended an eight-year absence from the Australia one-day side.Siddle was not lamenting being around the international set-up again, but he admitted it was a challenge remaining in rhythm while flying back and forth for the occasional BBL appearance. He will link back up with the Test squad in Canberra on Wednesday morning and is likely to miss the Strikers’ next match as it is the day before the second Test. Then if, as expected, he isn’t required he will aim to play the final two group matches although the Strikers have all-but seen their title defence come to an end with the defeat in Sydney.”It’s been good to be around the Australian set-up, but think I’ve played my seventh game in white-ball in two months so there’s not a lot of cricket being played,” he said. “It has been hard to fly in and play games, that’s no excuse but not the greatest preparation over the last few weeks.”I’m feeling good, bowling plenty with the red ball just not in games at the moment. It’s feeling good if I get the opportunity in Canberra but it’s probably going to be the same XI so I’ll probably miss out.”Despite being around the Test squad all season, Siddle was leapfrogged by Jhye Richardson for a place in Brisbane after Josh Hazlewood was ruled out. Richardson impressed with five wickets on debut to put himself in prime position for an Ashes berth, but despite his lack of recent cricket Siddle is not concerned about it impacting his chances of going to England.”It was disappointing to miss out last week, but I’m doing all I can,” he said. “It’s not too bad, there’s still four Shield games to go then I go over and play county cricket for two or three months before the Ashes anyway. Think my record over there speaks for itself, I’m not too worried about preparation for that.”It’s just tough at the moment trying to get some game time, flying in and out, specifically for the Strikers the games haven’t lined up well with the Tests so that’s been the hardest part so it has been tough. It is always nice to come back and play these games, get a little bit of cricket under my belt.”Though Siddle talked about a two or three month pre-Ashes spell with Essex that would be significantly reduced if he were part of the World Cup squad. Australia’s final 15, which has to be named by April 23, will have a training camp in Brisbane during early May before heading to the UK for the tournament which runs until mid-July.An in-house warm-up match involving Australia A in late July will be the main Ashes preparation. Those not involved in the World Cup, and on the fringes of the Test squad, will have two other four-day matches as part of the Australia A tour. Justin Langer said they were likely to leave naming the Ashes squad until quite late to assess form in those A-team games.

Richard Pybus likely to be removed as West Indies coach

Richard Pybus is likely to be removed as head coach of West Indies, ESPNcricinfo understands, just three months after overseeing the Test series victory against England. His contract was meant to run until after India’s visit to the Caribbean in July following the World Cup, but the new Cricket West Indies (CWI) president Ricky Skerritt will host a board meeting next week as part of a review of the coaching structure.”A cricket review process is underway,” Skerritt told ESPNcricinfo. “Announcements will be made following our board meeting on Tuesday.”Pybus’ shift to the head coach position in January, filling the vacancy left by Stuart Law moving to coach Middlesex, created significant divisions in the Caribbean, but the team had shown plenty of promise against England by winning the Test series 2-1 and sharing the ODIs 2-2 to lift confidence ahead of the World Cup.Pybus originally took over as high performance director in February 2018 having previously served as West Indies’ director of cricket from 2013 to the end of 2016, when he chose not to renew his contract. The stint as director of cricket was controversial. He was responsible for the policy that made participation in West Indies’ domestic competitions mandatory for international selection across formats. This was in part responsible for a number of senior players choosing to focus solely on playing T20 leagues around the world. The position of Mushtaq Ahmed, an assistant coach since October 2018, might also be under threat, but there has been no clarity on that front yet.*West Indies cricket could be about see a significant overhaul following the end of Dave Cameron’s six years as president after he lost to former team manager Skerritt in recent elections. Skerritt immediately made clear he wanted to push home-grown coaching talent rather than looking overseas.”That [Pybus being appointed as interim coach] has been a vexatious sort of issue,” he said. “I have to tell you that we believe very strongly in localising the expertise that we put behind our teams and we believe only in bringing in non-Caribbean expertise only where it is not available across the region. We want to be sure that the team does well at all times with the possible resources but we also have to make sure that they have a Caribbean support team around them.”* 1600 GMT: The story has been updated to reflect Mushtaq Ahmed’s status

Everton must act fast in race for Blackburn midfielder Adam Wharton

Everton are interested in signing an exciting young player with "Champions League level" quality on the ball, according to a fresh transfer update, but they are falling behind in the race.

Everton transfer news

The Blues have an important month ahead of them, not only in terms of further pulling away from the Premier League relegation zone, but also when it comes to completing new signings. Sean Dyche will surely be eyeing up reinforcements between now and the end of the January transfer window, and plenty of players have been name-checked as financially viable additions.

That includes Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill, who the Everton manager worked with for a long time at Turf Moor, and a loan move has been mooted. Manchester United youngster Hannibal Mejbri has also emerged as a temporary option in the middle of the park, with the Blues battling it out with Sevilla to get their man.

Talleres winger Ramon Sosa is a more unknown player who has been linked with a switch to Goodison Park, too, so the club certainly appear to be looking at adding some youth to their ranks.

Everton fall behind Spurs in Adam Wharton race

According to a new update from Football Insider, Everton are interested in signing Blackburn Rovers youngster Adam Wharton, but Tottenham and Crystal Palace are also firmly in the mix, and Kevin Thelwell will need to act fast as the north London outfit are "stepping up" their interest.

Blackburn Rovers midfielder Adam Wharton.

"Tottenham are stepping up their interest in Blackburn midfielder Adam Wharton, sources have told Football Insider. Spurs scouts have regularly watched the 19-year-old in action – with Everton and Crystal Palace also keen on the highly-rated, top young player.

"A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Tottenham recruitment chiefs feel Wharton is a potential star in the making."

Wharton looks like a player of enormous potential, already becoming an undoubted key player for Blackburn and starting 20 Championship games for them this season. In that time, the 19-year-old has assisted three times and chipped in with one goal, and he has also averaged 2.3 tackles per game. The young Englishman has had praise heaped on him by Blackburn manager Jon Dahl Tomasson, too, who has said of his talented midfielder:

"Adam, on the ball, he has a Champions League level. I've been a Champions League player myself, I've coached in the Champions League so I know what you need."

This says so much about the long-term potential that Wharton possesses, and if Everton could beat others to his signature this month, it would represent a hugely exciting piece of business.

The Blackburn ace is still maturing as a player, so it would be unfair to expect him to come straight in as a superstar for the Blues, but the quality he is already performing with at a good standard suggests he could become a fixture in Dyche's team in a relatively short space of time.

Man Utd plot player swap deal to sign Everton star who Ten Hag loves

Erik ten Hag is believed to be a big fan of the player…

BySean Markus Clifford Jan 9, 2024

Wharton only signed a new deal at Ewood Park last month, keeping him there until the summer of 2028, so a hefty bid may be required to prise him away. He could be worth every penny, though, should he keep developing at his current rate.
