Cantwell 2.0: Clement ready to reignite Rangers move for EFL star

Glasgow Rangers continue to ramp up their pre-season preparations by playing a glamour friendly at Murrayfield Stadium this weekend against Manchester United.

With the opening Premiership fixture taking place in just two weeks, Philippe Clement will be hoping to bring at least another two or three players to Ibrox, thus bolstering his squad.

If he doesn’t, then the starting XI against Hearts could look fairly similar to the one that ended the 2023/24 campaign, featuring the likes of Cyriel Dessers and Scott Wright in some capacity at Tynecastle.

Hopefully this isn’t the case, but with every passing day of no new announcements, it could turn into a reality when the league season begins.

Despite numerous links in recent weeks, transfer activity has been laboured. Could this change in the coming days? As a fresh update has been provided.

Rangers showing interest in former Championship starlet

At the start of the year, Football Insider claimed that the Light Blues were interested in signing then Stoke City centre-forward Tyrese Campbell this summer.

He had just six months left on his deal with the Championship side and Clement was keen on a deal to bring the Englishman north of the border once the season concluded.

Campbell’s deal with Stoke expired, and he is now a free agent, which could give the Belgian coach a boost, especially as the Daily Mail state Rangers are just one of the clubs showing interest in the player.

A raft of second-tier sides, including QPR, West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United are all keen on signing Campbell, but the chance to win trophies and play in European football should be plenty of incentive for the striker as he seeks his next move.

It won't be the first time the club have signed a player who shone in the Championship, as Todd Cantwell had made his breakthrough at Norwich City in the second tier.

Could the Englishman emerge as Cantwell 2.0 for the Light Blues should he join the club this summer?

Todd Cantwell’s Rangers career in numbers

The Englishman was one of Norwich’s prized assets just a few years ago after shining in the Premier League during the 2019/20 season, scoring six goals in the top flight.

In the summer of 2021, the Canaries valued him at £40m amid interest from Aston Villa as they sought a replacement for Jack Grealish.

Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell.

In January 2023, however, his career appeared to be at a crossroads, falling out of favour at his boyhood club. Michael Beale rescued the midfielder from his purgatory and the move to Ibrox looked like a smart piece of business.

Indeed, his first six months in Glasgow saw Cantwell score six goals while grabbing five assists, not bad for someone who cost just £1.5m.

Last season saw the former Norwich starlet register 15 goal contributions – eight goals and seven assists – despite missing several games due to injury issues.

He ranked fourth in the squad for goals and assists (12) in the Premiership throughout 2023/24, along with ranking third for big chances created (seven), fourth for key passes per game (1.7) and fifth for successful dribbles per game (1.2), showing how impressive he was in the final third.

Todd Cantwell

Campbell may play in a more advanced position than Cantwell, but there is no doubt Clement can get him firing should he make the move to Ibrox this summer.

Tyrese Campbell’s season in numbers

Campbell missed six matches due to a hip injury last season, while falling out of favour upon his return to full fitness, making just 24 appearances for Stoke.

This meant he managed to score just four goals and grab two assists, hardly numbers which demonstrate his potential.

Cantwell failed to score or assist in the six months prior to his move to Rangers. Perhaps Campbell – who has been described as "always a handful" by former boss Michael O'Neill – could come to life next term in new surroundings.

The 6 foot striker still managed to average 2.1 shots per game while succeeding with 0.5 dribbles per game – a success rate of 55% – despite averaging only 52 minutes each game.

Again, not earth-shattering, but with more opportunities in the starting XI, these could have improved further, indicating there is plenty of potential there.

What Tyrese Campbell could offer Rangers

Despite a poor 2023/24 campaign, Campbell demonstrated his vast talents the season prior. Indeed, among his Stoke teammates, the striker ranked first for goals and assists (14), along with ranking first for shots per game (2), third for big chances created (six) and second for successful dribbles per game (0.8), showing how impressive he can be in the opposition third when at full fitness.

Football writer Ollie Walton dubbed the player as a “great talent” earlier this year, but it is time for him to add some consistency to his game, which could come with a move north of the border.

His statistics when compared to his positional peers over the previous 365 days are certainly impressive and prove that he is more than just an out-and-out striker.

Not only does he rank in the top 5% for progressive carries per 90 (2.79), but Campbell even ranks in the top 9% for total shots per 90 (3.69) and in the top 13% for both progressive passes (2.64) and touches in the attacking penalty area (6.03) per 90.

These figures are certainly encouraging and if interest in the centre-forward is concrete, then it could be a solid enough signing which adds some depth to Clement’s attacking department.

The reality is, Rangers will have to sell a few players in order to raise funds for future arrivals. While free transfers might not be all that glamorous, they are key to beefing out the squad, which is exactly what Campbell will do.

Hopefully, he can remain fit and healthy should he join the Gers in the coming weeks, as his skillset could be perfectly suited to Scottish football, making him a decent option to call upon.

Edu looking at signing new centre-back for Arteta

According to various reports in the last few weeks, sporting director Edu and manager Mikel Arteta have been tipped to bring in a new central defensive option ahead of a likely Premier League title challenge with Man City next season.

Arteta is looking to make it third-time-lucky in his pursuit of the title, having lost out to City in each of their two previous challenges since 2022. The Gunners pushed Pep Guardiola's side to the final day, accumulating 89 points and scoring 91 goals, but their rivals have set an incredibly high standard to beat in recent years.

To take the squad that bit further, Edu has been targeting a new striker for Arsenal, as well as a potential new midfielder to replace the exit-bound Thomas Partey. Arsenal are believed to hold an interest in Amadou Onana, among others, with Partey attracting serious interest from the Middle East and Turkey.

However, it has also been reported that Arteta wishes to acquire an alternative to star central defensive duo Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba. Arsenal conceded the fewest Premier League goals of any top-flight side last season, with Gabriel and Saliba being a factor in this.

You could make a case that there are few options to come in if either of the pair were to be absent, though, which has led to interest in a variety of central defensive options. Arsenal have been considering a bid for Marc Guehi, with the Crystal Palace ace currently impressing for England at Euro 2024.

Elsewhere, Nottingham Forest star Murillo and Barcelona star Jules Kounde are other reported targets for Edu. A highly rated defender in Serie A who has also turned heads with some excellent displays for Italy at the Euros is Bologna star Riccardo Calafiori.

The 22-year-old was even hailed by World Cup winner Gianluca Zambrotta for his "extraordinary" performance against Albania in their opening group game.

“He played an extraordinary game, like the whole team in the first 60 minutes,” said Zambrotta.

"He played with personality, without fear, perhaps the only flaw was on the long ball where we took a risk with Donnarumma’s exit. But he showed some beautiful things.”

His performances on the biggest stage will only increase his price tag, which is already rumoured to be somewhere around the £42 million mark.

Arsenal could outbid Juventus to replace Kiwior with Calafiori

According to Tutto Juve, the Gunners present a very real danger to Juventus in the race to sign Calafiori this summer.

It is believed Arsenal see Calafiori as an ideal option to replace Kiwior, who Tutto Juve states could well leave. It is also thought that they can offer more money than Juventus and potentially outbid the Old Lady, who are counting on Calafiori's preference to remain in Italy.

Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori

The centre-back was a star under Thiago Motta at Bologna last term, with the tactician now looking to prise him away to Juventus after choosing to replace Massimiliano Allegri.

Calafiori made 30 Serie A appearances for Bologna over 2023/24, managing two goals and five assists in that time.

There isn’t anything in the world today that will give you better than this. No fables, no mysteries, no fantasy worlds, no rollicking political thrillers will match up to India’s youngest members building around the oldest one, who took bruises, knocks and some amount of intimidation to take this game deep. And then, the patience – yes, the patience – of Pant. Strung along at a strike rate around 40 for the largest part, gave himself time. “Give yourself time,” they’ve been telling him forever. He did at Sydney, it was his best Test innings they said. And then he comes back, and he brings us this. Unbeaten on 89, taking India to win with three overs to spare. At the Gabba. No one does this at the Gabba. A record chase, a loss for Australia for the first time since 1988.A tied series was enough. A draw would do it. That was the talk all day. It was probably the balm that made this Indian line-up so composed today: play time, there’s little to lose. That manifested in a Shubman Gill innings of pure class up front. A 91 that kept Australia humble even as they kept breaching Pujara’s defenses to hit him, multiple times, on the body. This was the last day, this was Starc’s time. Gill tore into him for an over of 20 runs, and Starc never quite returned all day from that. Spare a thought for Pat Cummins – No. 1 in the world, possibly the fittest man in the game. He had to do it all today, carrying that bowling line-up, arguably the best in the world, that has been defied three innings in a row now. And it culminates in a series loss. This series was 0-1, India had been bowled out for 36. They were severely incapacitated. They had no business pulling off their greatest series win of all time, with ten minutes to go. Yet, here we are. What a series. Pure quality in every single session from two brilliantly competitive teams. It will take a while to forget it.

5:15pm: It is on

A hooked six, a spliced four, a ramp and a vicious sweep. Australia are utterly under the pump at the moment. There are no clouds, the cracks themselves are assisting India’s batsmen, and there isn’t a bowler in sight who seems to have an answer right now. India’s swashbuckling young left-handers are setting them up for history.

4.39pm: 69runs, 15 overs, 6 wickets

4.07pm: The countdown begins

Exactly a 100 to win off 20 overs, and the new ball has been taken as a light drizzle comes down on the Gabba. This is it, for Australia – they need to make something happen here, and they need to do it quick if they want to win this game. The final bit of advantage they can get as a bowling unit today.Successful chases at the Gabba•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

3.31pm: Rain check

2.41pm: Tea

India now showing definite signs of aggression. That should only increase the deeper this game goes and, you’d think they’d be quite comfortable doing it as long as Pujara is at the other end; he has been a rock today, been struck thrice on the helmet, oe on the knuckles, and a handful of times on the body. But, as ever, he remains the assured figure in that batting line-up.Shubman Gill fell short of a maiden hundred but he set the template at the other end, one that Ajinkya Rahane was looking to follow as well. But Pat Cummins keeps pulling things back for Australia, and he’s done exactly that again towards the end of the session. Runs against him seem a distant dream at the moment – but the others have been vulnerable, particularly Mitchell Starc so far. Onto the final session now of a superb series. India need 145 off 37 overs, Australia need 7 wickets.

1.56pm: No shot offered?

Here is Sidharth Monga on the two lbw appeals against Pujara where it was deemed he wasn’t offering a shot:”Two really interesting reviews against Pujara today when he has been adjudicated to not be playing a shot. Neither of the replays showed enough of the ball hitting the stumps or there would be a huge controversy because, quite simply, Pujara was playing both the balls. According to the lbw law, you are or not playing a shot if you have “made no genuine attempt to play the ball with the bat”.Now there are times when batsmen do jump out of the crease and pretend to play a shot, hiding the bat behind the pad, but on both these occasions Pujara’s bat was next to the pad and not behind the pad the moment the ball hit the pad. These were two really harsh calls, and seem to have set a precedent, which will cast doubts in Pujara’s mind every time he steps out of the crease. At the time of writing this, Pujara has faced 853 balls in this series. Another 25 balls, and he will have a second entry in top 10 balls faced by a visiting batsman in a series in Australia in which he has played only four Tests.”

1.30pm: Chase, on?

12.03pm: Lunch

Cheteshwar Pujara fended off a short ball barrage•AFP

There is life in this contest now! Australia have gone shorter over the last half an hour, and as was the case in the last few innings, the pitch has responded to being slammed down. It has coincided with the sun coming out and drying up the overnight moisture a little more as well, so Australia will feel a little better going into lunch. And that is because India have batted superbly in the first session. They lost Rohit early but it’s been run-scoring from one end and trademark defiance at the other from Gill and Pujara. With little assistance for the bowlers early on, Gill drove gloriously through the line for his runs, and in the face of nasty short bowling, Pujara has worn a few on his body and been hit on the helmet twice without showing any signs of losing his shape. The pair has made sure India go into the break with nine wickets in hand and 62 overs to play.

It’s been a series of superb debuts on either side. Cameron Green and Mohammed Siraj ended pretty well yesterday doing their primary skills. Today, Gill has reminded us one last time this series that he is here and ready for Test cricket. All series he has been organised, had an appetite to attack when possible, and on this last day in a steep chase, he has provided just the start you need from an opener. A solid fifty.

10.50am: Demons

Pat Cummins struck early on day five to remove Rohit Sharma•Getty Images

Are non-existent so far. Maybe one from Starc has kicked up as goes around the wicket to aim for those cracks. But in general, it’s been consistent bounce today. Perhaps that has a little to do with Australia being fuller, and maybe the moisture underneath has helped too. To a smaller extent, the roller must have had an effect. But nothing scary so far for India.

10.08am: Lengths

ESPNcricinfo Ltd

These are all the dismissals in this game filtered for bowled, lbw and caught. A little caveat that it also includes wickets off spinners. But even accounting for that, the story is clear – it’s the fuller balls that are doing most damage. We’re likely to see more purchase for the relatively shorter lengths today, given the cracks and all, but Cummins capitalising perfectly this morning already. Pin the batsmen back, have them see a few kick up at them, and you can find the nicks off a good length.

9.37am: On this day

File photo: India can’t contain their delight after sealing the deal•AFP

Thirteen years ago, Irfan Pathan was named Man of the Match as India beat Australia in Perth. Things weren’t quite on par the way they are now, but this is the kind of thing that’d satisfy the optimistic Indian fan. H/T to Gaurav Sundararaman for spotting this.

9.03am

We head into the last day of this sensational series with the opportunity for plenty of drama. India need 324 to win the series, Australia need 10 wickets. In both their paths is a glum forecast, but only one team really NEEDS to win. And that is Australia. A draw doesn’t do too much harm to India in terms of WTC prospects – considering they have a big home series coming – and they would get to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. For Australia, it’s not that simple on either of those fronts. But perhaps the one thing they have going for them is that it is a lot easier to force a result with the ball rather than with the bat on this pitch and in these conditions. This is the piece with all the WTC scenarios for the two teams. And here is some info about the weather forecast for today. We are scheduled for 98 overs on paper.

Everton struck gold on titan who’s worth more than Arthur Melo & Ndidi

Over the last couple of years, Everton have conducted excellent business in the transfer market, turning their attention to younger talents and allowing them to develop at Goodison Park rather than signing big-money players who are past their best.

Jarrad Branthwaite arrived on Merseyside a couple of years ago for just £1m from Carlisle United and has bided his time and eventually made a huge impact on the Toffees' first-team so far this campaign.

He started all but three matches in the Premier League under boss Sean Dyche last season, with his form catching the eye of Manchester United who have been constantly touted with a move to sign the youngster during the transfer window.

Jarrad Branthwaite

Whilst the club wouldn't want to lose their young talent this summer, it is a reflection of the excellent dealings in the market, with the club needing to focus more on emerging stars in the years ahead.

Their recent dealings have continued this season, signing talented youngsters Tim Iroegbunam and Iliman Ndiaye, with Dyche targeting more players to further bolster his impressive Toffees squad.

Everton transfer news

Over the last couple of weeks, Everton have been linked with various midfielders to try and provide added depth to the Toffees squad. Many names have been thrown into the mix, but one player won’t be arriving at Goodison Park – during this transfer window at least.

Journalist Santi Arouna recently claimed that the club had made an offer to sign Leicester City star Wilfred Ndidi. He was wanted by a whole host of other clubs after the Nigerian, who featured 32 times for the Foxes last season, failed to agree a new deal at the King Power Stadium, despite the Foxes' return to England’s top flight.

Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi.

However, in recent days, the 27-year-old penned a new deal with Steve Cooper’s side, ending the Toffees’ chances of securing a deal for the midfielder.

Despite the failure to secure a deal for Ndidi, the club have made contact over signing Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo, who’s free to leave the Italian giants this summer.

They face stiff competition from fellow Premier League side Newcastle United, but no offer has been made, with both sides still battling it out for the Brazilian’s signature.

However, the aforementioned duo are both valued lower than one star who has excelled on Merseyside under the guidance of boss Dyche.

James Tarkowski’s market value in 2024

After departing Burnley at the end of his contract, centre-back James Tarkowski joined the Toffees on a free transfer in the summer of 2022, under then-boss Frank Lampard.

japhet-tanganga-james-tarkowski-everton-transfer-premier-league

The “sensational” central defender, as described by journalist Joe Thomas, has been ever-present at the heart of the Toffees backline since his arrival, featuring in all but one minute of the club's battle against relegation in the last two campaigns – a staggering record.

He's been a reliable figure for Everton, maintaining his fitness for two full seasons and avoiding any injuries – a real rarity in modern football, especially given the frantic schedule the players have to endure.

As a result, Tarkowski has seen a sharp upturn in his value, with the defender now valued at £16.6m, as per Football Transfers. His subsequent market value is higher than Ndidi and Arthur Melo, with the duo only valued at £12.8m and £10.3m, respectively.

In what has been a tricky season for off-the-field reasons, Tarkowski has proved to be a shining light on the pitch, with the former Burnley man able to lead the club's push towards mid-table security this season.

His leadership skills have allowed Branthwaite to thrive in his first full campaign of Premier League football, with Dyche hoping he can still have the partnership at his disposal coming the opening game of the season in less than 6 weeks' time.

Pep could cash in on Grealish with Man City swoop for £60m PL star

Manchester City are just over a week away from their opening game of the 2024/25 campaign as they prepare to face off against Manchester United in the Community Shield.

Pep Guardiola may have been disappointed by his side's trophy haul last season as they only came away with one piece of silverware – the Premier League title.

The Spanish boss may want more success in the cup competitions, domestically and in Europe, this time around as the Cityzens go in search of another treble.

There has not been much change to the City squad during the summer transfer window, though, as they have only made one new signing so far.

Brazil international Savinho has signed on a permanent deal to bolster Guardiola's options on the right side of the attack, after spending last season on loan with Girona in LaLiga.

There is still a few weeks left to go before the summer transfer window officially slams shut, however, and this means that there is still time for the Premier League champions to make further alterations to the group, with outs and ins.

Potential attacking transfers for City

TEAMtalk recently reported that Manchester City forward Jack Grealish is a target for his former club Aston Villa ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The outlet claimed that the Villans are keeping a close eye on his situation at The Etihad and are weighing up a move for his services, after they qualified for the Champions League last term.

It stated that Unai Emery's side would like to sign the England international on a season-long loan deal, with an obligation to make it permanent next summer. However, there was no mention of how much they would be willing to pay for him.

Guardiola could sanction an exit for Grealish amid this interest from Villa by swooping to sign another attacking midfielder to take his place in the squad.

The Sun reported last month that the Cityzens are one of the teams eyeing up a potential swoop to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace this summer.

It was claimed that City and fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur are both interested in landing the England international and would be willing to pay his £60m release clause if they decide to go ahead and pursue a move before the end of the window.

The Eagles wizard could come in as a fantastic signing for Guardiola who would allow the ex-Barcelona boss to brutally ditch Grealish from the team.

Jack Grealish's struggles with Man City

Man City showed huge faith in the English attacker when they smashed their transfer record to pay a whopping £100m to sign him from Aston Villa in the summer of 2021.

Given the money spent to prise him from Villa Park, the 28-year-old winger has endured an underwhelming time on the pitch with the Cityzens so far.

He has racked up 14 goals and 18 assists in 125 matches for the club in all competitions over the last three seasons combined, and has not hit double figures for goals or assists in any of his Premier League campaigns.

As you can see in the table above, Grealish is coming off the back of a disappointing year in the top-flight with the Cityzens, having been directly involved in just four goals in 20 appearances in the division.

He ranked within the bottom 24% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the Premier League for assists per 90 (0.09), which illustrates how poor he has been at creating chances for his teammates to find the back of the net.

For £100m, the England international has not provided consistent quality as a scorer or a creator of goals from a left wing or attacking midfield position, which is why Guardiola should be open to allowing him to re-join Villa this summer.

Manchester City's Jack Grealish

His exit would leave the team light in the wide areas, particularly on the left flank, though, and that is why the club should swoop to sign Eze.

The Palace star's arrival would then allow City to brutally ditch Grealish without having to worry about being left short for depth ahead of next season.

What Eberechi Eze could bring to City

Whilst the current Cityzens forward has failed to provide enough quality in the final third in recent seasons, Eze has been in impressive form for the Eagles.

He could come in as a big upgrade on Grealish and offer more as both a scorer and a creator of goals from a left wing or attacking midfield role for Guardiola.

In the Premier League last season, Eze contributed with 11 goals, four assists, and seven 'big chances' created in 27 appearances for the London outfit.

Eberechi Eze celebrates for Crystal Palace

The 26-year-old wizard ranked within the top 13% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the division for non-penalty goals per 90 (0.44) and the top 13% for shot-creating actions per 90 (4.82), which shows that he excels at scoring goals and creating opportunities for his teammates to shoot.

As you can see in the table above, Eze has been directly involved in 29 goals in his last 65 Premier League appearances for Palace over the last two seasons.

He has hit double figures for goals in each of the last two campaigns in the top-flight – a feat Grealish has failed to achieve in any of his seasons with City.

These statistics suggest that the £60m-rated star, who was once described as a "delight to watch" by U23 scout Antonio Mango, could come in and improve Guardiola's squad.

Eze could arrive as an upgrade on Grealish, due to his superior quality in the final third, and add more firepower to the Spanish manager's forward line, which could help them to compete on all fronts.

Therefore, signing the Palace magician would then allow the Premier League champions to send the former Villans captain back to his former club this summer.

The league phase for three of the Elite Groups in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2020-21 ended on Sunday, with Gujarat, Andhra and Karnataka topping Groups A, B and C.The last round of the league phase will take place on Monday, with the teams finishing on top in Elite Groups D and E joining the other three group toppers as automatic quarterfinal entrants. The format for this year’s tournament has the top teams from each of the five Elite groups progressing to the quarterfinals. They will be joined by the two teams who finish highest on points among all the other Elite Group teams. The team that finishes third on points will play the Plate Group topper in a pre quarter-final, and the winner of that match will be the eighth quarter-finalist.Sunday’s games were marked by several teams going hard to improve their net run-rates, with a view to qualifying. Group A Gujarat came out triumphant in a top-of-table clash against Baroda, maintaining a clean slate to finish on top of the group, while Baroda finished second. Dhruv Raval (102 off 129) and Het Patel (82 off 84) were the fulcrum around which Gujarat put up 277 for 7, and Baroda could only muster 237 for 9 in response. Piyush Chawla (3 for 52), Chintan Gaja (2 for 40) and Arzan Nagwaswalla (2 for 47) were the main wicket-takers for Gujarat.Gujarat finished on 20 points from five games, while Baroda had 16, with a net run-rate of 0.399.File photo: N Jagadeesan blazed an 18-ball 48 to see Tamil Nadu through•MPCA

Group BAt the Daly College Ground in Indore, Andhra ensured their net run-rate would be the highest in Group B, romping to victory against Jharkhand in 9.5 overs after bowling them out 139. Harishankar Reddy led the way with the ball, taking 4 for 30. Andhra’s chase blasted off with an 82-run opening stand that came in just 5.5 overs, Ashwin Hebbar (44 off 18) and Ricky Bhui (57* off 27) ensuring a quick finish and a passage into the quarter-finals. Jharkhand would have been through to the quarter-finals if they had won.Elswhere in Indore at the Emerald High School Ground, Tamil Nadu completed a big win over Vidarbha. Having bowled Vidarbha out for 150 in 41 overs, Tamil Nadu got to 152 for 5 in 11.2 overs. B Aparajith opened the bowling for Tamil Nadu and took 3 for 10 in six overs, while J Kousik (3 for 22) and M Mohammed (3 for 33) also had three-wicket hauls. Mohammed completed a fine all-round day with 37 not out off 14 balls, with N Jagadeesan’s 18-ball 48 the other notable score.Madhya Pradesh overcame Punjab by 105 runs in an action-packed match at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore, but it wasn’t enough to secure qualification. MP put up 402 for 3, powered by Venkatesh Iyer’s 198 off 146, with Aditya Shrivastava blasting 88* off 56. Punjab’s chase ended at 297 all out in 42.3 overs, but they had their moments with opener Abhishek Sharma smashing a 49-ball 104, having got to his century off just 42 balls.Four teams ended up on 12 points in Group B – Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh. None of the other three can make the quarterfinals however, due to at least three other teams among the Elite Groups ending up with higher than 12 points.File photo: Robin Uthappa continued his good form in the tournament with an unbeaten 32-ball 87•BCCI

Group CThree teams ended up on 16 points – Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala. All three had a high net run-rate, having ended the league phase with comprehensive wins, but Karnataka’s was the highest at 1.834. However, UP (1.559) and Kerala (1.244) have ensured that they might still be in the running for the quarterfinals.Karnataka’s openers led the team to a ten-wicket win at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium with a mammoth stand, after Railways had made 284 for 9 built around Pratham Singh’s 129. Shreyas Gopal’s 3 for 41 were the best figures, but the real stars of the day were R Samarth (130* off 118) and Devdutt Padikkal (145* off 125), as Karnataka completed victory in 40.3 overs.Shivam Sharma, the 20-year-old left-arm spinner, took 6 for 22 as Uttar Pradesh bowled Odisha out for 148 in 40.1 overs. The UP batsmen then hauled in the target in 21.4 overs, losing four wickets. At the Alur 3 cricket ground, Kerala bowled Bihar out for 148 in 40.2 overs, and then chased down the target in just 8.5 overs. Robin Uthappa continued his good form in the tournament, smashing 87 not out off 32, while Vishnu Vinod (37 off 12) and Sanju Samson (24* off 9) were equally destructive in a nine-wicket win. Uthappa reached his half-century in 22 balls, and hit four fours and 10 sixes overall. S Sreesanth took 4 for 30 while Jalaj Saxena, who opened the bowling with Sreesanth, was among the wickets too, with 3 for 30.For the three teams in the Elite Groups already on 16 points but who haven’t qualified yet – Baroda, UP and Kerala – their chances will depend on how other results go in Groups D and E. While UP have the highest net run-rate, followed by Kerala, Baroda are some way behind with 0.399.Group DMumbai have an all-win record with 16 points in four games, and play Himachal Pradesh in their final game. Mumbai’s net run-rate is a massive 2.268 – the highest in the league phase in the Elite Groups – so they should fancy their chances of qualifying even if they lose their last game. Delhi are on 12 points, and could reach 16 if they win their last league game, against Rajasthan. Delhi’s net run-rate is 0.473 though, and they’ll be looking to boost that considerably even while needing a win.Group ESaurashtra have won all games so far and are on 16 points. They play Services in their last league match. Their net run-rate is 1.133, lower than both UP and Kerala, so they will need a win to ensure automatic progression. Chandigarh are second, with 12 points, and play Jammu & Kashmir in their final league game. Chandigarh’s net run-rate however, is -0.213 so even a massive win in their final game might not be enough to take them to the quarter-finals.Uttarakhand and Assam are both on 16 points in the Plate Group, and will play different opponents in their last league matches (Sikkim and Mizoram), but Uttarakhand’s net run-rate of 3.538 – as against Assam’s 1.382 – means they should qualify for the pre-quarterfinals from the Plate Group if points are equal.

Arsenal’s 30-cap international agrees to join new club with deal imminent

One Arsenal international player has agreed to join a new club and a move is set to happen soon, with Mikel Arteta's side closing in on agreeing another Emirates Stadium exit this summer.

Players sold or let go by Arsenal this summer

Mohamed Elneny and Cedric Soares were the first two senior players to depart north London, following the expiry of their contracts after June 30, with Nuno Tavares and Albert Sambi Lokonga soon following the duo.

Next few days key as £55 million player waits to join Arsenal this summer

He was a star for his club last season.

Tavares joined Lazio on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy set at around £7.5 million, and the left-back signed a five-year contract with Marco Baroni's side considering his transfer will become permanent next summer.

Meanwhile, Lokonga agreed to join Sevilla on loan as well, but like Tavares, his move includes an option for Sevilla to sign the Belgian midfielder for around £10 million next year. After spending the second half of last season on a temporary stint at Sturm Graz, young striker Mika Biereth completed a permanent switch to the Austrian side, ending his three-year stay at the club.

The most high-profile departure, though, has been that of Hale End academy graduate and promising midfielder Emile Smith-Rowe. The 24-year-old, who found consistent opportunities difficult to come by under Arteta last year, completed a £35 million move to Fulham last week – which is a club-record fee for the Whites.

More senior players seem set to follow the likes of Smith-Rowe out of Arsenal before deadline day on August 30. Indeed, it is believed Marseille have been in talks to sign Eddie Nketiah, while uncertainty also surrounds the future of Reiss Nelson, who West Ham showed interest in earlier this window.

Kieran Tierney has been told find a new club by Arsenal as well, with the Scotsman now far down Arteta's pecking order after the arrival of versatile centre-back Riccardo Calafiori, who can also play at left-back.

There have been suggestions that Arsenal could allow Jakub Kiwior to leave after Calafiori's arrival too, so it will be interesting to see if both Tierney and the Poland international secure moves away soon.

Karl Hein agrees to join Real Valladolid from Arsenal

However, before anybody else departs, it appears goalkeeper Karl Hein is the next player to leave. The 30-cap Estonia international, who was subject to serious interest from Charlton Athletic, is now set to make a move to La Liga instead. Hein could not turn down a loan move to Real Valladolid, and nor could Arsenal, with the keeper joining them on loan, according to Standard Sport.

The 22-year-old, who's featured just once for the Gunners' first team in the EFL Cup, still has 30 caps for his country and this move could be a real chance for him to showcase his skills on a big stage. Hein's contract expires next year as well, so this may well also be an audition for his next move in 2025.
