FIFA Club World Cup 2025: Qualified teams, format, venues & how to watch

The FIFA Club World Cup, taking place in 2025, is the newest club competition that will take place in the United States next summer.

The event highlights the ever-growing nature of FIFA, with countries represented from each of the six international confederations: AFC, CAF, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, OFC and UEFA.

In December 2022, the FIFA Council approved the expansion of the FIFA Club World Cup from its current seven-team tournament to one comprising of 32 teams. Rather than being held every December, the tournament would now be held every four years, taking place in the summer months.

Champions League 2024/25: How the new format works & current standings

UEFA has changed the Champions League format for the 2024/25 season. Here’s an overview of how things work and the current standings after Matchday 2.

1 ByAlex Caple Oct 2, 2024

In its current guise, the FIFA Club World Cup features just seven clubs, with the champions from UEFA and CONMEBOL receiving byes into the semi-finals. Manchester City won the 2023 edition after a 4-0 victory over Copa Libertadores winners Fluminense.

FIFA is expanding the tournament to increase interest and global appeal, with more teams taking part from previously neglected African and Asian confederations such as CAF and AFC, which will help to up its popularity and reach.

Club World Cup qualified teams

The qualification format is slightly more complicated compared to the previous editions of the tournament. Previously, a club secured a place in the Club World Cup if they won their federation’s continental championship.

With the expansion to 32 teams from 2025 onwards, there are several spots up for grabs in every international federation aside from OFC, with just one team making it via the ranking pathway.

Four teams from CAF, AFC and CONCACAF will qualify. If a team has won the continental championship more than once in the preceding four years, another team will qualify via the rankings.

Europe will have 12 qualifiers – four via the champions pathway and eight from the ranking pathway, with the latter taking overall performances in the Champions League into account. South America’s CONMEBOL federation has the second-highest number of entries. Six teams – four from the champions pathway and two from the rankings pathway – will qualify for the tournament.

Finally, one club from the host nation will take part, making up the 32 teams to fight it out for the title.

Club World Cup format and draw details

The format of the Club World Cup will be the same format used in the World Cup between 1998 and 2022, with the exception of a third-place play-off.

Eight groups of four teams will compete in a round-robin phase. The top two finishers in each group will secure a place in the round of 16.

From the round of 16 to the final, a direct single-match knockout stage will take place, with there being no third-place playoff. The draw for the group stage took place in December 2024.

Tournament controversy

While the event will give opportunities to teams who may never have had the chance to participate in the previous version of the tournament, the expansion has also garnered plenty of controversy.

One such complaint is the fact the event adds even more matches to the global footballing calendar than ever before. The recent expansion of the UEFA Champions League means the top teams are playing more continental fixtures compared to years gone by.

The Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) says that the expansion is placing more stress on professionals as they are being pushed too hard.

Even the players are concerned over the way the game is going. “We have too many games, and it’s putting our careers and health at risk,” said Ballon d’Or winner Rodri in September, a week before the Spaniard tore his ACL, ruling him out for the rest of the season.

The midfielder played a staggering 50 games for Manchester City last term before featuring six times for his country as they won Euro 2024. Rodri would have only taken a couple of weeks off before going again in August, heightening his chances of injury.

Not even a season-ending injury could stop Manchester City’s Rodri from claiming football’s biggest individual prize.

Another controversy surrounds the broadcast deals for the tournament. FIFA is yet to secure any media deals for the competition with less than 12 months until it begins, although the $4bn (£3.1bn) target set by the governing body appears to have put the majority of potential broadcasters off.

Apple had reportedly made a $1bn deal for the global rights, according to The Athletic. However, FIFA reverted to a traditional media rights sale.

Club World Cup 2029

The 2029 edition will be the second event to feature 32 teams, which will feature the winners of the four previous continental championships.

In terms of hosting, Australia and New Zealand are preparing a joint bid to host the 2029 tournament.

Furthermore, Spain, Portugal, and Morocco – who are all hosting the 2030 World Cup – are looking at a bid for the second edition of the FIFA Club World Cup in order to prepare for the 100th anniversary of the World Cup.

5 potential replacements for Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool

Since being handed his Liverpool debut by Jurgen Klopp back in 2016 when he was just 18 years old, Trent Alexander-Arnold has been an integral figure for the Reds.

He’s played over 300 times in total, mostly at right-back, and has wowed fans with his impressive attacking output, scoring 23 goals and producing an astonishing 92 assists.

His attacking prowess from the right flank has helped Liverpool lift nearly every major trophy possible, including the Champions League and the Premier League on two occasions.

5 potential replacements for Mohamed Salah at Liverpool

Mohamed Salah has been linked with a move away from Liverpool, but who could be in line to succeed him at Anfield?

ByBarney Lane Oct 19, 2024

“An outstanding talent and he has turned into a world-class football player,” Klopp said of Alexander-Arnold just before he left the club at the end of last season.

“He’s one people will talk about 20, 30, 40 years,” the German added.

Sadly for Liverpool fans, a future without their star right-back is now a reality. The Englishman is in the final year of his contract at Anfield and has now officially confirmed that he’ll be heading to Real Madrid.

So, with that now finally out in the open, here are five players the Reds could turn to as a replacement for their iconic academy graduate.

1 Denzel Dumfries Inter

Denzel Dumfries for Inter Milan

In the later stages of last year, it was reported that the Reds had an agreement in place to bring Inter right-back Denzel Dumfries to Anfield in the summer. Dumfries was initially out of contract at the end of the season at the time of the reports, meaning he could have been brought to Merseyside on a free transfer.

However, in November of 2024, he penned new terms at the San Siro, making this a deal that’s rather trickier to complete.

Last season, the 28-year-old Dutchman, who joined Inter in 2021 from PSV, racked up four goals and six assists in 36 appearances for Inter, helping them lift the Serie A title.

Dumfries has also been linked with Manchester United and Aston Villa, both of whom reportedly tried and failed to land him in the summer transfer window.

2 Jeremie Frimpong Bayer Leverkusen

Jeremie Frimpong

Another Dutch right-back who has been on Liverpool’s radar is Jeremie Frimpong, according to the Liverpool Echo.

In 2024, it was said that the Reds were one of a number of clubs keeping tabs on the Bayer Leverkusen star, who was a key player for Xabi Alonso’s side as they lifted the Bundesliga title for the first time in their 120-year history last term.

Like Alexander-Arnold, Frimpong is an attack-minded full-back. Last season, he hit 14 goals and produced 12 assists in all competitions.

However, Frimpong usually plays as a right wing-back, which could pose an issue for Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who typically plays with a traditional back four.

3 Vanderson Monaco

While Frimpong and Dumfries can be considered more attacking full-backs, AS Monaco’s Vanderson is quite the opposite.

Though he does nab the occasional goal or assist, the Brazilian is a truly outstanding defender. According to FBref, he ranks in the 99th percentile for tackles and the 97th for interceptions when compared to his positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues.

And according to reports in Spain, the 23-year-old, who recently made his senior debut for Brazil, is one of the names Liverpool are considering as a potential replacement for Alexander-Arnold.

Speaking about the player during the start of his second season at Monaco in September 2022, former Monaco boss Philippe Clemente described him as “very ambitious and a huge perfectionist”.

“Every day he wants to be better than the last,” Clemente said.

4 Pedro Porro Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham defender Pedro Porro

According to more recent reports elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur’s Pedro Porro is “right at the top” of Liverpool’s list of potential Alexander-Arnold replacements.

Porro, 25, has been one of the Premier League’s outstanding full-backs over the past two seasons, impressing with his defensive stability, smart wing play and eye for goal – the latter of which was best demonstrated by his thumping long-range strike against Burnley, which won Spurs’ Goal of the Season award last year.

Of Liverpool’s proposed right-back targets, Porro is arguably the most similar to Alexander-Arnold. Both players are excellent progressive passers, boast exceptional outputs in the final third and are extremely comfortable in possession.

However, what’s most interesting about Liverpool’s links with Porro is that the Spaniard and Alexander-Arnold are both thought to be wanted by Real Madrid. Indeed, Porro has not been shy about his desire to play for Los Blancos one day.

So if Madrid do move for Alexander-Arnold, do Liverpool fans really want to then bring in a player who they know will still be dreaming of a move to the Santiago Bernabeu himself? Maybe not.

5 Conor Bradley Liverpool

In life, sometimes you find that the thing you’ve been looking for has been right in front of you all along. For Liverpool, that thing could be Conor Bradley.

Like Alexander-Arnold, Bradley came through Liverpool’s academy and was handed his first-team debut by Klopp in January 2024. Since then, he’s gone from strength to strength, filling in for the England ace on a number of occasions, including in the Carabao Cup final win over Chelsea.

Bradley, while nowhere near as attack-minded as his teammate, is a tenacious tackler and a good header of the ball. He offers the sort of defensive solidity that Alexander-Arnold has often been criticised for during his Liverpool career.

Last season, for example, albeit within far fewer minutes, Bradley went the whole season without making an error – which FBref defines as a mistake leading to a shot. Alexander-Arnold made five of those, which was the most of any player in Liverpool’s squad.

Bradley’s not glamorous, but he’s already shown himself to be a solid player when called upon, and at just 21 years of age, there is still plenty of room for improvement. Plus, he wouldn’t cost the Reds a penny, which is always a bonus.

Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson thinks the Northern Ireland international is the man for the job. “I think Conor Bradley has the makings of an outstanding full-back if Trent were to leave,” he recently told SportsCasting. “He’s shown that he’s ready to start more for the first team and already has a number of good displays to point to.”

City fans unfurled a huge banner before kick off in the first leg of the play-off tie at the Etihad Stadium saying 'Stop crying your heart out', a play on an Oasis song by the same name. Rodri pipped Vinicius Jr to win the most prestigious individual prize in football back in October, causing a huge upset.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Vinicius was widely expected to win the award after helping fire Real Madrid to a La Liga and Champions League double. But he was beaten in the end by Rodri, who didn't lose a game as he helped City win a fourth consecutive Premier League title and then anchored Spain's European Championship triumph in the summer. Madrid and Vinicius did not take the defeat well. As soon as they learned Rodri was going to win, the Spanish giants boycotted the ceremony.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti weighed in on the debate over the Ballon d'Or before the game by saying Rodri should have won the award in 2023 after completing the treble with City and scoring the winning goal in the Champions League final.

    WHAT NEXT FOR RODRI?

Rodri is still recovering from tearing his cruciate knee ligament in September against Arsenal. He attended last Sunday's Super Bowl in New Orleans and vowed to "come back stronger" from the injury. The Spaniard has targeted a return in time for the FIFA Club World Cup in the USA in the summer although Pep Guardiola has warned him against trying to return to early. The coach said: "I'd love to arrive in the last stages of the Champions League and he could help, but I will not put one second of pressure on him. In my mind, next season is when Rodri will return. In my mind he’s not here. But maybe he comes back earlier and that would be good."

Everton must axe £100k-p/w ace who has scored as many goals as Keane

Everton suffered their first Premier League defeat since mid-September after Southampton scored a late winner on Saturday.

Sean Dyche’s men had shown plenty of progress in recent weeks, but they reverted to square one against the Saints.

While they have conceded 17 goals this term, it is the ability to score which has cost them dearly throughout the campaign.

Indeed, in ten matches, the Toffees have scored just ten goals. Only Southampton, Crystal Palace and Manchester United have found the back of the net on fewer occasions than Dyche’s men.

Everton’s top scorers this season

So far this season, only six players have scored for the Goodison Park side, with Dwight McNeil leading the way with four efforts across 12 matches. The former Burnley man has been one of Dyche’s key stars this term, also creating eight big chances while averaging 2.7 key passes per game in the top flight.

Dwight McNeil

Iliman Ndiaye is next on the list with three goals, enjoying a superb start for the club after only joining in the summer.

Michael Keane, Beto and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have all scored twice for Everton this term, while Abdoulaye Doucoure rounds off the list by netting once.

The most surprising aspect of this list is the fact that Calvert-Lewin has scored so few goals, despite being Dyche’s main option to lead the line.

His performances have not been great this season. Is it time to move him on sooner rather than later?

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s season in numbers

Truth be told, the £100k-per-week striker hasn’t been living up to this staggering wage for the last few seasons.

Two seasons ago, he managed just two Premier League goals, improving this to seven during the 2023/24 campaign, but these totals are why Everton find themselves languishing near the bottom of the table.

Indeed, the Englishman hasn’t scored more than ten goals since the 2020/21 season. Are his best days behind him?

He was even criticised by Jamie O’Hara following Everton’s defeat to Aston Villa in September where he missed an easy chance:

A tad harsh perhaps, but there is no questioning Calvert-Lewin is a shadow of his former self, scoring the same amount of goals as Keane this term.

When compared to positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues, the striker ranks in the bottom 5% for non-penalty goals per 90 (0.14) and outside the top 40% for total shots per 90 (2.78) over the previous 365 days.

This is yet more evidence of his diminishing qualities. The 27-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, and it remains to be seen whether or not he signs an extension in the coming weeks.

Judging by his recent form, they could certainly free up a large chunk of the wage bill by either selling him in January or releasing him at the end of the season.

Hand injury rules Devon Conway out of T20 World Cup final and India tour

New Zealand won’t bring in a replacement for the final or the India T20Is

New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Devon Conway has been ruled out of the T20 World Cup final on Sunday against Australia, and the subsequent India tour with a broken right hand. Conway sustained the injury when he struck his bat just after being dismissed in the semi-final against England in Abu Dhabi. An X-ray on Thursday confirmed “a break to his right hand fifth Metacarpal”.”He’s absolutely gutted to be ruled out like this at this time,” head coach Gary Stead said in an NZC release. “Devon is hugely passionate about playing for the BLACKCAPS and no one is more disappointed at the moment than he is – so we’re really trying to rally around him.”It looked a pretty innocuous reactionary incident on the field, but the blow obviously caught the bat between the glove padding, and while it’s not the smartest thing he’s done, there’s certainly an element of bad luck in the injury.”Devon is a great team-man and a very popular member of the side so we’re all feeling for him. Due to the timelines we won’t be bringing in a replacement player for this World Cup or next week’s T20 series against India, but are working through our options for the Test series later this month.”Conway scored a crucial 46 off 38 balls at No. 4 in New Zealand’s tense chase of 167 before he was stumped off Liam Livingstone’s bowling. He also took up the gloves midway into the tournament, when New Zealand decided to bring fast bowler Adam Milne into the XI, as Conway, a specialist batter in the XI until then, took over keeping duties from Tim Seifert.New Zealand had picked the same squad of 15 for the World Cup and the three T20Is in India starting on November 17, just three days after the final.Conway, with an experience of three Tests who has a double-hundred to his name on debut at Lord’s, was also in the squad of 15 for the two India Tests that will be played after the T20I series. He was the second keeping option in the squad after Tom Blundell.

Meanwhile, a Sprintframe 360 soleplate has been added for stability and traction, a Hybridtouch Upper provides moulded comfort at high speeds, and Lightstrike Pro Foam has been transferred over from adidas' running shoes to aid endurance.

Messi said after unveiling the new F50s this week: "Developing my latest boot with adidas has been another incredible experience and I can’t wait to wear them on-pitch. I am also very grateful that all these young talents like the boots and want to wear them, and I’m excited to see how they perform."

Liton century, Mushfiqur 82* put Bangladesh on top after Pakistan's early success

On a day in Chattogram that began with an earthquake and then had smoke from a nearby fire billowing above the stadium, Pakistan blazed through the Bangladesh top order to get the early advantage in the contest. Once Bangladesh found the ground beneath their feet, though, there were no aftershocks. Pakistan’s early morning menace melted away in the watery winter sunshine of the afternoon, and from four down for 49, Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das put on an unbroken 204-run partnership to wrest back control on the first day, the home side sitting pretty at stumps at 250 for 4. It’s just the second time Bangladesh have ever put on a partnership of 200-plus in Test matches against Pakistan.Liton’s maiden Test century decorated the day for Bangladesh, a fighting knock from a man who has been knocked down a fair bit of late. Dropped from the T20 side after Bangladesh’s torrid World Cup campaign, Liton got a vote of confidence from captain Mominul Haque, who said Liton was strong enough to recover mentally. Coming in to bat with the top and upper-middle order decimated, Liton fought off the new ball, the spinners, a niggle as he approached his hundred, and, under the fading light, a few overs with the second ball, coming out of all of that unscathed to guarantee he would be out there on the second morning to take on Pakistan’s bowlers once more.Related

His partner, Mushfiqur, has enjoyed a similarly redemptive story arc on the first day. He, too, did not play the T20I series and was involved in a spat with his board. He looked especially fresh today. He was instrumental in turning the momentum around in the early overs of the partnership, removing the sting of Shaheen Shah Afridi with the expertise of a beekeeper and setting the wheels in motion for a Bangladesh revival. By stumps, he, too, was closing in on a hundred, just 18 away from his eighth Test match three-figure score. The last two times he reached that mark, he had gone on to score double-hundreds.In the morning, Mominul Haque continued the trend Mahmudullah had started in the T20Is by besting Babar Azam at the toss, and, like Mahmudullah, opted to bat first. But it was Pakistan, who called the early shots, dominating the morning with a new ball that found a surprising amount of swing. However, with Saif Hassan willing to drive on the up and put anything too straight away to the leg-side boundary, it was the effort ball from Afridi that fetched Pakistan’s first wicket. The left-arm quick banged one in that threatened to lodge up the batter’s nostrils, and the desperate fend from Saif found Abid Ali at short leg.His opening partner Shadman Islam fell to an inswinging ball from around the wicket from Hasan Ali – who had been somewhat wayward up till then – that trapped him in front, beating the left-hander on the angle. Spinner Sajid Khan got into the act shortly after, coaxing an edge from Mominul, which the umpire somehow missed, only for the decision to be overturned on review. Pakistan threatened to run riot when Faheem Ashraf had Najmul Hossain Shanto caught sharply at point by Sajid, bringing Mushfiqur and Liton to the crease.Mushfiqur Rahim looked fresh and in the mood, and ended the first day unbeaten on a solid 82•AFP/Getty Images

The pair survived the Pakistan offensive in the first session and saw off the early post-lunch overs cautiously, before getting comfortable with Pakistan’s five-pronged attack. Nauman Ali had kept a lid on scoring early in the middle session, but Bangladesh tended to get a boundary from the other end more often than not. They were more sure of their footwork, while the bounce stayed true when it came to both spin and pace, and the batters gradually began to find their timing and confidence. Afridi was punished by Mushfiqur whenever he went full or wide, the batter finding the gaps in the off-side with trademark precision.Liton, meanwhile, wasn’t to be outdone, and used his feet to the spinners very well. A six over wide long-on after dancing down the track was the most explosive shot of the session, but it also indicated Bangladesh’s comfort with charging Pakistan’s spinners, who do not have the wrong’un in their armoury. In the period after drinks, the run-scoring against the spinners picked up markedly, and Pakistan were forced to bring back Hasan. But with the pitch offering very little to the bowlers, Bangladesh appeared to have realised this was their chance to notch up a competitive first-innings total.Pakistan might have hoped the tea break would disrupt Bangladesh’s momentum, but they only returned rejuvenated. Aside from a sharp chance Liton offered to square leg when on 67, there was nothing for Pakistan, who found themselves firmly shut out as the bowlers came back for second and third spells to try their luck. The spinners might have been more probing with their lines; Sajid, in particular, was guilty of dropping the ball too short, with Abid at short leg paying the price, but for the most part, Bangladesh didn’t need any assistance from the bowling. Liton picked up his hundred with a quick single in the 78th over, putting in a dive to get to roars of approval from the home faithful. As the sun began to set and the floodlights came alive, there was a faint glimmer of hope for Pakistan with the new ball due. Liton was struggling with cramp by now and the light was fading fast; this was as good an opportunity as ever to pick up another wicket. Bangladesh’s defences, however, were not to be breached, the duo bringing up the 200-run partnership before the day was out. It’s just the sixth time in Test history when four wickets have fallen before the fifty mark only to be followed by a double-century stand for the following wicket. The partnership broke records left, right and centre, and as the players walked off, Bangladesh may just begin to feel they have a shot of finally getting a win over Pakistan in this format.
